Hi Christopher,

Thank you so much for your kind words! Sorry for the delay this was in spam, I apologize. I love that you’re looking for road trip adventures in Southeastern Ohio—there’s so much history, natural beauty, and hidden gems in this part of the state. Based on your interests, here are some great places to explore that are accessible and full of adventure:

Indian Mounds & Historical Sites:
Wolf Plains Earthworks (Athens County): A fascinating set of Hopewell culture mounds right in your region.
Serpent Mound (Adams County): One of the most famous effigy mounds in the world, with an accessible viewing area.

Caves & Rock Formations:
Ash Cave (Hocking Hills): A must-visit! It has a wheelchair-accessible paved trail leading to Ohio’s largest recessed cave.
Old Man’s Cave (Hocking Hills): While the main trails have stairs, the area near the visitor center offers some accessible overlooks.
Rock Bridge Nature Preserve (Hocking County): Features Ohio’s largest natural rock bridge, with some easier trails.

Waterfalls:
Cedar Falls (Hocking Hills): A beautiful waterfall with some easier access points.
And several others in Hocking Hills areas.

Abandoned Coal Mines & Mining Areas:
The Little Cities of Black Diamonds Region: Includes Shawnee, New Straitsville, and surrounding areas, rich in coal mining history.
Miners’ Memorial Park (Jesse Owens State Park): Features remnants of Ohio’s coal mining past.

Train Tunnels & Rail History:
Moonville Tunnel (Vinton County): A must-see! This historic, allegedly haunted tunnel is in Zaleski State Forest and has a flat trail leading to it.
King’s Hollow Tunnel (Athens County): Another abandoned train tunnel not far from you.

State Parks & Lakes:
Lake Hope State Park: Gorgeous scenery, history, and accessible picnic spots.
Strouds Run State Park: Just outside Athens, offering peaceful lake views and trails.
Burr Oak State Park: A quiet, beautiful area with accessible lodges and trails.

I also suggest checking the Portsmouth area. The state lodge is a great place to stay (beautiful views) and they have a state park too! Thanks again for your message, and I hope you find some fantastic adventures in Southeastern Ohio.

Greetings Cindy,
This is a wonderful, informative site. I live in North/East Athens County and I’m looking for Road Trip Adventures to experience year round.
Although I’m disabled, I can still get around well enough to still visit interesting areas in Southeastern Ohio area.
Thank you for the information of potential adventures and the information on Ohio Wildlife.
I’m interested in suggestions on: Indian Mounds, Caves, Waterfalls, Abandoned Coal Mines, Mining Areas,Train Tunnels, State Parks, Lakes and the like.
Thank you for your time.
Blessings,
Christopher.
