About Mt Gilead State Park

Mt Gilead State Park is located between Columbus and Mansfield. Covering an area of just 191 acres, this park combines the charm of a small, secluded park with the amenities of larger parks. Wildflowers and wildlife are in abundance at Mt Gilead, providing year-round interest for nature lovers and hikers.

There are two dams on the lake, an upper and a lower dam. Their redesign between 2015 and 2018 gave the water a more natural flow.

Look out for wildflowers including bloodroot, hepatica, trillium, and wild geranium in the spring. Animals you may encounter include raccoons, skunks, and deer. Bird watchers will be delighted to spot the Carolina Wren, the White Breasted Nuthatch, the Wood Thrush, and many more.

A picturesque gazebo offers the perfect setting for a summer wedding or other events.

Activities and Facilities

Boating and Fishing

Paddle craft, sailboats, and boats with electric motors are welcome on the 13½-acre lake.

Fishing (with a valid Ohio fishing license) is also available. The lake contains bass and bluegill.

Trails

There are six multi-use trails. All are available to hikers and runners, one is a bridle trail.

• Big Oak Trail —  0.4 mile
• Bridle Trail — 1.5 miles
• Lake View Trail —  1.7 miles
• Spring Trail —  0.3 mile
• Whetstone Loop —  0.8 mile
• Whetstone Trail —  0.8 mile

Picnicking

There are five picnic areas in the park. Four are on the south side and one is at the entrance off Route 42. View the online map to find out exactly where they are located.

Camping

The Mt Gilead State Park Campground has 22 full hookup sites and 37 electric (50/30-amp) sites. Each site has a fire ring and picnic table. There is a shower house, flush toilets, and wastewater drains. A playground is available for the children. Pets are welcome. Reservations are required – Phone: 866-644-6727.

There is a camp store for supplies, food, convenience items, and souvenirs.

Winter Activities

Winter activities include cross-country skiing, ice fishing, and ice skating.

Columbus Aeronauts, in Dublin, operate year-round but only when weather conditions are optimal. These balloon rides take guests over scenic areas of central Ohio.

Gibboneys Aerostation is in Grove City, Central Ohio. Flights usually take place at sunrise or sunset, as this is when winds are lightest. Trips take approximately 2-3 hours, including both the pre-flight and post-flight operations. Passengers can take part in these operations as well.
