About Hocking Hills Moonshine

Hocking Hills Moonshine opened in 2015 and is a family-owned and operated distillery. The St. Clair family took on the challenge to turn back the clock to the time of prohibition and produce corn liquor. 

Hocking Hills Moonshine offers 45-proof flavors. If that is not strong enough, you can get their 120-proof. 

A little history, the term moonshine has been around since the 15th century. It wasn’t until the 18th century in England that it was referred to as a liquor. As for the United States, moonshine is thought to have started in Pennsylvania. 

Tour Hocking Hills Moonshine

This is the perfect place to go for a taste of moonshine and a taste of history too! Here, you can not only taste the product, but you can also take a tour. 

This distillery is a museum of sorts. It has several original copper pot stills and many other era-specific items that you can view. 

Be sure to keep an eye out for the wall between the retail room and the work area. It is a salvaged grain bin that the St. Clair children used as their clubhouse growing up. 

During the tour, you can view the creation of moonshine from start to finish. It is definitely an art! The moonshine is made with local corn and Hocking Hills Spring Water.  If you have tried this water, you know it has a sweet mineral taste, and it helps to give the Hocking Hills Moonshine a distinct and smooth flavor. 

Moonshine Tasting

During your visit, you can taste before you buy full-sized products.  Flavors include:

New to the distillery is the release of Hocking Hills Bourbon, aged in white oak barrels for two years. 

After you have tasted and identified your favorite, be sure to grab some product to take home! Can’t make it to Hocking Hills Moonshine to make your purchase? Head to one of the many state liquor stores in Ohio and you can grab the product there!

About Red Eagle Distillery

Red Eagle Distillery is located on South River Road between South River Winery and M Cellars. The owners also own South River Winery. This is the first bourbon and whiskey to be made legally in Ohio since the prohibition. There is ample seating outdoors and indoors. No matter the time of year you visit, Red Eagle Distillery is busy! As you can see our most recent visit was during a beautiful snowfall!

The bar and seating inside have a modern yet inviting atmosphere with beautiful wood floors and bars.  It is different from other distilleries because they personally know all the farmers who supply the grains for their products, as well as the grapes for the vodka.  Sourcing local ingredients is important to Red Eagle Distillery. They realize that sourcing local ingredients may not be the quickest way, but they know and appreciate the hands that tended the crops. 

Pro Tip: Need to use the restroom? It is located in the red building behind the barn! You can also walk across the street to M Cellars. We have seen people walking through the vineyard rows to South River Winery as well; however, it is best to ask first if that route is okay to take. 

Red Eagle Distillery Spirits

There are five spirits distilled here.

Bourbon

This Ohio Bourbon is 90.2 proof and distilled with the Red Eagle proprietary blend of northeast Ohio corn, wheat, and barley. The bourbon is aged for up to six years.

Rye

Rye is the spicier cousin of Bourbon. The Rye is 90-proof and made from a blend of Ohio rye, malted barley, and corn. It is aged for at least two years.

Vodka

The vodka is made from grapes from South River Winery, which is right next door. The vodka is aged in a barrel, which gives it a unique taste compared to grain or potato vodkas.

Brandy

Red Eagle describes their brandy as an “enticing blend of smoothness of grape spirit and the complexity added by the aging process.” The brandy is aged for at least two years.

Red Maple

This Red Maple is unique, distilled from Ohio maple syrup, and aged for 2 years in barrels. The Red Maple is a great substitute for whiskey or rum in cocktails. I can personally attest to this!
