About Apple Picking in Ohio

The apple picking season is typically from early to mid-September, to early October. The orchards announce their start dates on their website or social media pages. Some of the busier orchards require reservations, so check out their website before you head out.

The majority of orchards have different varieties of apples available to purchase year-round, as well as other fruits and vegetables. Some have bakeries, some have farm market stores with homemade products. These orchards and farms are worth a visit any time of year when they are open, not just for the apple-picking season!

Apple Picking in Central Ohio

Lynd Fruit Farm

Lynd Fruit Farm in Pataskala is a well-established farm. As well as apples, visitors can pick their own berries, pumpkins, and sunflowers. There are also a lot of activities available for the whole family to enjoy!

The Orchard & Company

Here you will find a variety of activities including you-pick apples, tractor-drawn wagon rides, a corn pit, a huge hill slide, and much more fun for the kids. There is a café serving apple cider slushies and pumpkin donuts, among many other delights.

Rittman Orchards

Rittman Orchards have apples, peaches, berries, and sunflowers available for picking. There is a bakery that sells a variety of products, they have a ‘Pie of the Month’ with fillings such as caramel apple walnut, strawberry rhubarb, fruits of the forest, and more.

Brant’s Apple Orchard

As well as apple-picking, Brant’s has a bakery and a farm market. There is a picnic area by a pond with fish that apparently love a bite of a donut! The Covered Bridge Playground is fun for the kids. Brant’s hosts many events throughout their open season (August through November), including a fall festival.

Apple Picking in Northwest Ohio

Quarry Hill Orchards

Quarry Hill Orchards in Berlin Heights offer summer and fall you-pick. Apples are usually available from August to late October. Summer fruits that you can pick are cherries, raspberries, and peaches. Quarry Hill hosts many events throughout the year, details of which are available on their website and social media pages. There is an online shop as well as a farm store.

Johnston Fruit Farms

At Johnston Fruit Farms in Swanton, you can pick your own apples and pumpkins in the fall, and strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries in the summer. You can also pick flowers at this farm. There is a free petting zoo, games, and a sandbox for the children. Johnston’s makes cider in six varieties and you can view the cider mill at work. They also make a wide variety of donuts – fresh daily.

Apple Picking in Southeast Ohio

Hidden Hills Orchard

Hidden Hills Orchard in Marietta grows a wide variety of apples. Their six U-pick varieties are Buckeye Gala, Honeycrisp, Golden Delicious, Enterprise, Cameo, and Gold Rush. Hidden Hills produces an award-winning apple cider on-site. The orchard also grows cherries and peaches that are sold locally.

Fuhrmann Orchards

Fuhrmann Orchards offered you-pick apples for the first time in 2024. Early Fuji is the first of five varieties ready for picking in early September. The others are Golden Delicious (mid to late September), RubyRush (late September), Rosalee (early October), and GoldRush (late October to early November).

The Orchards grow 31 varieties of apples, there is an online chart so you can see when each variety is ready to purchase. Check the Facebook page for the you-pick availability.

Fuhrmann’s also have a sunflower field, you-pick pumpkins, as well as a wide variety of fruit and vegetables for sale. There is also an annual Apple Fest in October.

Apple Picking in Southwest Ohio

Peifer Orchards

Peifer Orchards in Yellow Springs offer U-pick throughout the summer and fall, with apples and pumpkins in the fall and blackberries, red raspberries, and black raspberries in the summer. About Brumbaugh Fruit Farm

In the early 1960s, William and his wife Jeanie started Brumbaugh farm, just outside of Arcanum. From a small orchard, the farm is now a diverse family enterprise.

Farmer’s Daughter Bakery offers apple dumplings, apple fritters, doughnuts, pies, pastries, and much more.

The bakery is open year-round Monday to Friday, and weekends during September and October.

The Adventure Market sells goods, including home-grown peaches, apples, and pears. It is decorated with fun displays for the kids to enjoy while the parents shop.

The market is open Monday to Saturday, July and August, and includes Sundays during September and October.

Monster Mountain

You can climb to the top of this giant man-made mountain, take in the views, and then slide down the 40-foot tunnel!

Kiddie Korn Maze

This little maze is for kids who do not want to attempt the larger 5-acre corn maze! Children will work their way through the maze by identifying colors, adding, subtracting, and counting! It is fun and educational!

Kinda Kooky Korn Maze

If you love corn mazes, this 5-acre corn maze might be your favorite! If you want an extra challenge you can use the maze at dusk using a flashlight!

Holey Moley

The tunnels are a fun activity and are perfect for anybody who loves to go burrowing!

Pumpkin Express

Nothing completes a fall farm experience better than a hayride! Head over to the haywagon area and take a ride to the pumpkin patch! You can take your time picking out the perfect pumpkin.

Ole’ Fishin’ Hole

The hole is a rental area at Brumbaugh Fruit Farm. This pond and campfire area is set up perfectly for large groups to enjoy fishing, volleyball, and hot dog roasts! Call ahead for reservations.

The Crib

The corn crib area is for those dads (and moms) who want to spend time with their family, but also want to check on their favorite sports team score. The corn crib is the place to do that as well as enjoy some refreshments and snacks too!

Grandpa’s Fun Acre

If you like the chill of haunted things, you can treat yourself to a scare at the Haunted House. Be sure to visit Winne’s Cracked Corn Box and other activities in this area.

Storybook Forest

The Storybook Forest is the perfect place to enjoy your favorite storybook characters and learn some nature facts.

Billy Bee’s Flight O’Fun

Want to learn what it is like to be a bee? At Billy Bee’s Flight O’Fun you can do just that! You will also learn about the importance of honeybees and their role in Ohio orchards.

More Activities

There is also a playset with a climbing wall, cargo net, and slide, as well as a zip line through the orchard with a viewing platform that was installed in 2024.

About Rittman Orchard

The Vodraska family has been farming for the last three generations. Dale and his father previously owned two farms in Ohio, starting with a small orchard in the Seven Hills area of Cleveland, followed by a dairy farm in Ashtabula County called Sunnydale Farms.

When the boys – Chris and Matt – went away to school, Dale and his wife Peg decided to retire to the Smoky Mountains. However, this did not suit them. They purchased Rittman Orchard in 2004. Chris helped his father repair and replant the neglected orchards. After graduating from high school, Matt also joined the business.

The family has invested time and money in rebuilding the market, adding new crops and products, expanding the bakery, and opening a stand at the farmers market in Cleveland.

Pick Your Own At Rittman Orchard

Rittman Orchard also has a you-pick program.  Each fruit has its own picking season.  For example, the Strawberry picking season starts in June.  Golden Delicious Apples start to ripen for picking in late September and Granny Smith Apples are ready for picking in late October.  Be sure to check out the Facebook page to keep up to date with what is going on!

You-pick includes apples, raspberries, blueberries, cherries, strawberries, corn, asparagus, pumpkins, flowers (including Iris, Foxgloves, Celosia, Snapdragons, and Zinnias), and Sunflowers.

The Facebook page is very informative about what is going on at the farm at any time, so be sure to check it out before you visit. There is also an Apple Chart online, showing the 72 varieties that Rittman Orchards grow with their descriptions, ripening times, and uses.

The ‘What’s Ripe‘ page has information for the current you-pick or goods in the market.

Sunflower Picking At Rittman Orchard

In 2021, Rittman Orchard started offering Sunflower picking.  The field was open for different days from weeks to weeks.  You will need to check on the ‘What’s Ripe’ section of the website. 

They have a shed open where you can purchase glass jars.  Vases are also available for purchase.  Customers will receive a pair of scissors to cut the flowers.  These scissors have to be returned when the customer leaves.  Approximately 8 sunflowers fit in a jar.  This can be paid for by cash or card.  Sunflowers can also be purchased within the store.

Rittman Orchard Bakery

A variety of pies, cookies, and other items are made fresh in the bakery.  You can order online. Each month, the bakery has a ‘Pie of the Month’, such as Caramel Apple Walnut, Fruits of the Forest, Pecan, Lemon Crumb, and more.

Also available are other fresh pies such as Pumpkin and Rhubarb.

Various cookies are also made fresh onsite, including chocolate chunk, peanut butter, snickerdoodle, salted caramel, and oatmeal raisin.

Rittman Orchard Online Shop

Rittman Orchard has an online shop for placing orders which is easy to navigate. Every product has an accompanying photograph, so you can buy with confidence.  

Some of the products that are available include beverages, bread, candy, dog treats, eggs, meats, sauces, and snacks.

There is no home delivery service, you will need to collect your order.

Bent Ladder Winery At Rittman Orchard

Bent Ladder Winery is typically open Thursday to Saturday between Noon and 9 pm.  On Sunday it is open between Noon and 5 pm.  Please be sure to call 330-485-1089 or check the website and social media for exact times as the Winery may be closed for holidays.

At the Winery you will be able to buy many types of ciders and wines, some of which are available in the tasting room.  This is subject to availability.  These drinks can be served in a variety of ways.  Rittman’s offers flight boards, glasses, and pitchers on site, as well as howlers, growlers, and cans as to-go options so you can enjoy your favorite cider at home.

About the Johnny Appleseed Festival

If you have never heard of Johnny Appleseed, here is a very brief outline of his life:

Born John Chapman in Massachusetts in 1774, he became a carpenter and worked in Pittsburgh. But John Chapman had a dream, well, two dreams – he wanted to plant apple trees and teach religion. He started to travel, taking with him only apple seeds, an axe, a hoe, and a bible. Johnny was often seen wearing a burlap coffee bag and a saucepan on his head!

He ultimately became a traveler, preacher, and storyteller but checked back on his apple tree nurseries (as he called them) as often as he was in the area, and the regions he planted in were Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Illinois, West Virginia, and Ontario. While he was away, he asked neighbors to care for the trees. He died in 1845 (aged 70) in Indiana.

The Johnny Appleseed Festival in Lisbon celebrates all things apple!

There will be craftsmen such as tinsmiths, apple pressers, blacksmiths, yarn spinners, and more.

Enjoy the photography contest, quilt show, talent show, apple pie baking contest, pedal tractor races, ice cream eating contests, and a pet parade!

There are fun activities for the children, with games and a dunk tank. Additionally, plenty of vendor booths will be selling their artisan goods, and food trucks will keep you well-fed and watered!

And of course, be sure not to miss Johnny Appleseed himself – keep an eye out for him, he will be the guy with the saucepan on his head!

About Brant’s Apple Orchard

The Simmons family was the first to plant an orchard on this site in 1980, when they grew 13 apple varieties.

In the early 1990s, the property was purchased by Roy & Debbie Brant, who expanded the orchard by adding a bakery and farm market. 

In 2014, the Diehl family purchased the orchard as the Brants wanted to retire. The Diehls have worked hard to expand the orchard, now growing 22 varieties on more than 4,500 trees. They have included a playground, added walking trails, and more seating areas.

You can enjoy the pick-your-own program at Brant’s Apple Orchard. They have a huge variety of apples, Asian pears, and table grapes.

In Brant’s Apple Orchard market, you can purchase homemade chocolate and caramel apples, locally sourced honey and maple syrups, locally grown corn, and chestnuts!

Pick Your Own Apples

Pick your own apples typically starts early to mid-September each year. The varieties you can pick include Cortland, Jonathan, Empire, and Honeycrisp. Up-to-date information is always available on their Facebook page.

There is an online Apple Guide with more information about each variety. Taste samples are always available in the market, so you can try before you buy.

Asian Pears and Table Grapes

Asian Pears look like russet-colored apples. They are native to Southeast Asia, and this is the only place in northeast Ohio that grows them. There are three varieties: Chojuro – small and sweet, available throughout September. Nitaka – mild flavor, medium size, harvested mid-September. Olympic – the largest variety, mild and juicy, available mid to late September. Tasting is available in the market.

There are six varieties of Table Grapes grown here: Marquis – sweet, pale yellow. Vanessa – sweet, deep red. Himrod – sweet, golden yellow. Mars – intense flavor, blue. Glenora – sweet and spicy, dark blue. Einset – unique strawberry-like flavor, red.

The Market

When you enter the market, you will see huge bins of apple varieties for sale. You can select your own apples and mix and match the varieties. Samples of all homegrown produce are available – just ask a member of staff!

At Brant’s Apple Orchard market, you can find homegrown and locally grown produce, such as honey, jams and jellies, apple and pumpkin butters, Maple Syrup and other flavored syrups, homemade chocolates and caramel apples, and much more.

Brant’s also carries locally grown corn, peaches, pumpkins, and chestnuts.

You can also purchase items such as apple peelers, slicers, knives, cookbooks, gift baskets, and child-friendly items as gifts.

Do not forget to check out the cider, cider slushies, and hot or cold creamy caramel cider drinks. When grapes are in season, the sweet grape slushies are not to be missed!

The Bakery

The bakery at Brant’s Apple Orchard is well-known for its Apple Cider Donuts! At times, they make more than 6,000 of these popular delights in a single day! There are often other donuts available, depending on the seasonal availability and the creativity of the baker!

Their other baked goodies include Apple, Pumpkin, Grape, and Asian Pear Pies, Cookies, Scones, Apple Turnovers, Cinnamon Twists, Fresh Baked Breads, and much more.

You can also enjoy lunch from the bakery, sitting in one of the picnic areas located within the grounds. The menu includes sandwiches, soups, breads, and wrap trays. Check out the online menu for more information.

Events and Activities

You are guaranteed fantastic, fun-filled family entertainment at Brant’s Apple Orchard! Take their Hayrides, for example. Each ride lasts 20-30 minutes (weather permitting, of course!) and will be narrated by the owner or a knowledgeable member of staff. Travel through the vineyards and learn about the orchard’s history. You can even learn about how apples are grown!

About Bauman Orchards

Life started at Bauman Orchards in 1929. This farm has been a family-owned business from the beginning and is now on the fourth generation of the family. The farm has two orchard locations, Bauman Orchards in Rittman and Scenic Ridge Fruit Farm in Jeromesville. There is also a seasonal market, Bauman Orchards Corner Market located at the corner of State Routes 585 and 57, outside of Rittman.

The Rittman location is 260 acres, with over 100,000 apple trees and 15,000 peach trees. Other produce includes pears, plums, nectarines, tomatoes, strawberries, and sweetcorn. There is a Farm Market that is open year-round, every day except Sundays.

Scenic Ridge Fruit Farm in Jeromesville has been owned by Baumans Orchards since 1998. This is a smaller farm that measures around 84 acres. On this farm there are fruit trees, grapes, strawberries, sweetcorn, and other various seasonal vegetables. This farm also has various types of apples and peaches. Guests are welcome to visit and pick their own fruit and vegetables. This is a seasonal farm and is open from June through to October.

Bauman Orchards Farm Market

The Farm Market stocks all sorts of goodies. Visiting the Farm Market is an amazing experience, and the staff are on hand to help. This Market is open all year round, every day except Sundays.

At Scenic Ridge you will find:

The Gammie brothers acquired 200 acres of land in the early 1900s and grew crops such as lettuce, tomatoes, and cabbage, before deciding to grow fruit. The brothers worked together on the farm for 25 years.

In the 1980s, the third generation of the family were and still are running the orchard, with the help of their children, the fourth generation.

Produce Available

Quarry Hill Cider – The pressings begin in late-August and continue until the festive season. The Farm uses a blend of their own apples.

Local Produce – At Quarry Hill Orchards, the main crop is apples. In partnership with other local Farmers, there are other items for sale as well. Some of the items that are for sale when in season are: acorn squash, corn, melons, beans, kale, and tomatoes.

Dry goods – It isn’t just fresh produce that is available on the farm, there are also dry goods available such as candies, noodles, syrup, popcorn, honey, maple syrup, and jams and jellies.

T-Shirts and Clothing – The Farm Market at Quarry Hill has a range of clothing on offer. Shirts, hats, and wearable farm gear are available. All sizes are available for purchase.

Apple Wood – As the season evolves, older trees have to be replaced. When the older trees are cut down, the wood is cut down to size and is available for people to use as firewood. Various weights of wood are available and if you bring your own chainsaw, the farm will show you how to cut the wood, and a reduced rate is offered.

You-Pick

There is you-pick availability for berries and apples at Quarry Hill Orchards.

All ripening dates are subject to local weather conditions. Cherry picking in mid-June. This is followed by red raspberries and currants in late June and into the first week of July. Peaches are ripe for picking during late July and throughout August, and finally into apples during August through late October.

Here is a list of the 38 varieties that Quarry Hill Orchards grow. Those marked with an asterisk are offered for you-pick each year.

The Pumpkin Patch

In the patch, there is an abundance of Pumpkin varieties available:

• White pumpkins
• Warty pumpkins
• Flat pumpkins
• Birdhouse pumpkins
• Jack-O-Lantern pumpkins

The staff collect the pumpkins and you can choose the pumpkin you would like to buy.

Events

Quarry Hills Orchards host events throughout their opening season. Events such as Spring Bloom, kicking off the season in May, through Peaches and Cream, Antique Tractor Show, Apple Peak, and Rural Roots, to Merry Merry, a Christmas celebration in December.

About Lynd Fruit Farm

Lynd’s Fruit Farm is in Pataskala in Licking County, central Ohio. The farm has been open for over 100 years, having started in 1919. 

At Lynd’s Fruit Farm, you can take part in their you-pick program. They have a huge variety of apples available to pick, as well as berries and pumpkins. There is also a market where you can buy fall decor as well as hand-picked produce, including their own apples, as well as other delicious food items. 

Pick Your Own

Each apple season varies; Lynd’s Fruit Farm shares on their website and social media when apples and other produce are ready to be picked. They also provide a handy, printable apple chart, which lets you know everything about the different apple varieties, such as texture and what they are good for (eating, baking, cooking, etc).

The bags provided for apple picking are for 10 or 20 pounds of apples.

TIP: If you are heading to Lynd’s Fruit Farm to pick a popular apple such as Honeycrisp, be sure to arrive when they open or shortly after.  They only open certain sections each day to pick, and the sections easily get picked over quickly. If you arrive in the afternoon, it is possible the only apples left will be the ones on the ground (which are still good).

Apple Varieties

Lynd’s Fruit Farm grows over 30 varieties of apples. The full list is below; all except for those in the third column can be picked. Some varieties may not be available for you-pick some years, depending on the crop, and some are only available for one day. Check on the website or social media pages for up-to-date information.

Asian Pears are available to pick in late September or early October, and popcorn between late September and November.

Pumpkin picking season is typically the end of September into October. To enter the pumpkin patch, there is a 1 pumpkin purchase minimum. In past years, the pumpkin patch sells out in the first week or two, so plan ahead. 

You can also pick blackberries, red raspberries, and black raspberries when they are in season. Typically, red raspberries are in season from mid-June to early July, whereas black raspberries are in season from early to mid-July.  Blackberries come into season in late July to early August. The berries are grown on The Patch on 37 in Alexandria. This is owned by Lynd’s Fruit Farm but is in a different location. It is shown on the map below.

Farm Market at Lynd’s Fruit Farm

The farm market at Lynd’s Fruit Farm typically opens for the year in late April.  It is open daily from around 10 am to 7 pm through early November. Please check the Lynd Fruit Farm website or social media to confirm hours before heading out. 

At the Farm market, you can find homegrown produce such as sweet corn, which starts in mid-July through early September. The earliest homegrown apples usually enter the farm market in mid to late August. You can often find homegrown pears, nectarines, and plums in the market as well. 

The farm market at Lynd’s Fruit Farm offers locally grown produce as well. The produce is grown by the Amish. You can find onions, tomatoes, zucchini, cabbage, broccoli, squash, and more!  There are often local greens for salads and herbs available.

One popular item in October, besides the pumpkins, is Ohio chestnuts and homemade cider. The cider is special because it is UV-light treated and made with no preservatives. The ciders are a blend of apples, and they also have Honeycrisp cider. 

There are also own-brand items such as fruit butters, applesauce, ciders, jams, pasta sauces, BBQ sauce, salad dressings, ketchup, and more. On Friday mornings, there are special (and oh-so-delicious) homemade pies from Steven’s Orchards and Amish Fry Pies. 

If you are looking for a special gift, a souvenir, or just some fall decor, the farm market at Lynd’s Fruit Farm has that too!

Events and Activities

You can expect a lot of fun, family-friendly events at Lynd’s Fruit Farm.  For example, in the spring, they have an Earth Day celebration. At this event, you can purchase apple trees. They also have adults make and take Salsa Pots or Herb baskets, and kids make and take Finger Painted Terra Cotta Pots or Planted sunflower seeds.  There will be music all day long, as well as lots of meet and greets.  This is just one special event at Lynd’s Fruit Farm. 

Also popular is Family Fun Day, which is held in May, and the Spring Fling Arts and Crafts Show held in May. Be sure to check their website often for new events and activities. 

Corn Maze

While apple picking is probably the most notable event held at Lynd’s Fruit Farm, the corn maze takes a close second place. The corn maze has a unique design as it has color-coded paths that coordinate with the maps you are given at the start.  There are so many fun hidden dino signs throughout the corn maze. The trick is to see if you can find them all! 

If you are looking for all the dino signs it can take up to an hour in the corn maze; however, you can make your corn maze adventure as short or as long as you would like! Worried about getting lost? Lynd’s Fruit Farm takes a lot of pride in how accurate their map is, and it will help you navigate the maze with ease.

TIP: If you are lost and pass the ‘red line’, follow it as it will take you to the entrance or exit quickly. 

Does your dog love to adventure with you? You are in luck; well-behaved, leashed dogs are allowed in the corn maze. Just be sure that you bring clean-up supplies and make sure your dog minds its manners! Animals, however, are not allowed in the farm market. 

In addition to the corn maze, they have inflatables, a barrel train, and much more!

S’Miles of Sunflowers

There are S’Miles of Sunflowers as this farm boasts 35 acres of Sunflower fields. There are masses of Sunflowers in the fields, and professional photography can take place here as well.

Every purchased ticket includes a Sunflower. Please be aware that you should bring your own pruner; however, pruners are available for purchase. Additional Sunflowers can be purchased as well. Please ask the staff about prices.

Where is Lynd Fruit Farm Located?

There are three locations for Lynd’s Fruit Farm. Blue Frog Farm is a working farm and is rarely open to the public; however, there is occasional apple, pumpkin, and blackberry picking offered here. The Patch on 37 opens around mid-June for berry picking. Check the social media pages for more information. Pataskala is the location of the main Lynd Fruit Farm. Please note that the address for apple picking varies, depending on where the trees are, so do check the website and social media pages.

Please note that Lynd’s Fruit Farm is huge! The address takes you to the farm market; however, the kids’ activities and the apple picking are not at the same address, but it is very close by. You will find lots of signs directing you to the places you need to be.
