About State Parks in Southeast Ohio

All state parks in Ohio are maintained by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). They are also all free to enter, with no parking fees. Across the state, parks vary greatly in their landscape, facilities, and activities. The state parks in southeast Ohio are mostly rambling, rocky, and hilly with many trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding.

The Fall Festival of Leaves is held in Bainbridge, Ohio. It takes place over three days in October. A fun-filled event for the whole family to enjoy!

Activities and events at the Fall Festival of Leaves include parades, the queen’s pageant, arts, crafts, flea market, midways, and more.

There will be participation events such as a log sawing contest, a 5K run, and the Opportunity Knocks talent contest.

Four Skyline Drive routes are available to visitors to this festival (and at any other time). They are The Pike Lake Loop, The Buckskin Hills Loop, The Paint Vista Loop, and the Red Bush Loop. Find out more information on the website.

There will be shows and plenty of food vendors and live entertainment.

• Saturday: 9 am – 10 pm
• Sunday: 10 am – 6 pm

About the Fall Festival of Leaves

At the Fall Festival of Leaves, the festivities include parades, the queen’s pageant, arts, crafts, flea market, and more.

There will be a log sawing contest and a 5K run. You can drive the four self-guided Skyline Drives – The Pike Lake Loop, The Buckskin Hills Loop, The Paint Vista Loop, and the Red Bush Loop.

Enter the Opportunity Knocks talent contest, where you will get to perform on the Paxton Theatre stage and have a chance of winning a cash prize! You will need to request participation online where you will fill out a registration form and submit a video for consideration.

There will be midways with lots of fun, games, and entertainment for the whole family, but especially the kids!

An antique tractor show and an antique and classic car show will line the streets.

With lots of live entertainment and food vendors, this will not be a boring event!

Downtown Sugarcreek the last weekend in September is the place to be if you want to enjoy a super fall festival. This annual festival has been in place since 1953 and attracts thousands of visitors each year. Sugarcreek has deep Swiss roots, so it is only natural that this festival has a strong Swiss theme. Ohio Heritage Days

Richland County, Northeast Ohio

Ohio Heritage Days are located in the lovely Malabar Farm State Park. This fall festival is a little different as it is focused more on education and it is a bit like a museum tour. Historical reenactments and demonstrations take place, so it is quite a fun festival to visit.

Ashtabula County Covered Bridge Festival

Ashtabula County, Northeast Ohio

This fall festival is also a bit different as the focus is on covered bridges. There are many free activities for people to participate in. The kids will also be entertained as there is live entertainment, food, drink, crafts, and games. Not forgetting adults, there are different contests, and one of the contests that is great fun is the troll costume contest.

Fall Festival of Leaves

Ross County, Southeast Ohio

The Fall Festival of Leaves is based in Bainbridge and this is known as Leaf Country for the beautiful fall leaf colors. On the third weekend of October, a family-friendly festival takes place.

The Circleville Pumpkin Show

Pickaway County, Central Ohio

This is a great festival, particularly if you are a pumpkin fan! Some of the world’s biggest pumpkins come to town and some of them are huge. An example of this was the pumpkin that was on display in 2021. It came in at a whopping 1,850 pounds.

Black Walnut Festival

Preble County, Southwest Ohio

Camden has been playing host to this fall festival for over 30 years. This festival takes place in mid-October and has lots of activities and events going on. A highlight of this festival is the food vendors. Some of the food on offer here is amazing. There is an emphasis on fall food like pumpkins and corn, but there are also favorites like ice cream and baked goods.

Apple Butter Fest

Wood County, Northwest Ohio

This annual festival has been held here since 1977. It is very busy and boasts over 40,000 visitors each year. Thousands of ‘a half-pint of apple butter‘ are crafted each year for the visitors. Some of the activities include the classic car show, crafts, arts, live music, and reenactments from historical events.

Bob Evans Farm Festival

Gallia County, Southeast Ohio

The Bob Evans Farm Festival is in mid-October. Food and drink on offer includes soup, cheeses, cider, and apple dumplings. There is live country music, Reno Family Horseshoe Pitching, Great Lakes Timber Show, and the Taps in Motion Cloggers.

Ohio Sauerkraut Festival

Warren County, Southwest Ohio

The Ohio Sauerkraut Festival takes place during the second weekend of October. The entire downtown area of Waynesville is tuned into a large sauerkraut area. Over 7 tons of sauerkraut is served up at this festival. This is a very popular festival and it attracts over 350,000 visitors each year.

Cross-Country Skiing in Northeast Ohio

Cleveland Metroparks

Cleveland Metroparks offers cross-country skiing on hiking, bridle, and all-purpose trails, as well as the fairways and rough areas of six golf courses. Cross-country skiing can take place when there is a four-inch snow base. Ski rentals are available at Big Met Golf Course in Rocky River. Guided instruction is typically available in January and February. There are three programs available: Introduction to Cross-Country Skiing, Try-It, and Learn-It.

Geauga Park District

In Geauga County, skiing is permitted at 23 of the parks that are located in this district. On the website, there are different classes and programs available for visitors to take part in.

Lake Metroparks

In Lake County, Skiing is available at the Chapin Forest Reservation and Girdled Road Reservation. Ski equipment can be rented at the Pine Lodge Ski Center. It should also be noted that Chapin Forest Trails are floodlit at night. There are trail maps for both the Chapin Forest Reservation and Girdled Road Reservation.

Lorain County Parks

In Lorain County, skiing is permitted in all of the parks. Skiing is also permitted at Forest Hills Golf Course and Schoepfle Garden provided there is at least 3 inches of snow on the ground. Skiers must bring their own equipment.

Mill Creek MetroParks

In Mahoning County, skiing is permitted on 6 trails within the Metropark. Skiing is also available on the Mill Creek Golf Course and the Par 3 Golf Course. Skiing equipment must be provided by visitors.

Portage Park District

In Portage County, skiing is permitted on 8 of the trails that are within the park district. These trails are varied in length, from 1.9 miles to over 7 miles long. Visitors must bring their own ski equipment.

Quail Hollow Park

Stark Parks offers cross-country skiing at Quail Hollow Park. A condition of this use is that the paths are covered with 3 to 4 inches of snow. In this location, equipment is available for rent. Classes are available in January and February.

Summit MetroParks

In Summit County, skiing is permitted in 8 of the Metroparks. Skiing is also permitted at The Bike and Hike Trail, Freedom Trail, and Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail. For these trails to be open, there must be a minimum of two inches of snow on the ground. There is no equipment hire available.

Medina County Park District

In Medina County, Skiing is available at 14 different locations, provided there is enough snow on the ground. Visitors need to bring their own ski equipment.

Cross-Country Skiing in Northwest Ohio

Toledo Metroparks

Toledo Metroparks tries to keep all trails clear for walkers, runners, and cyclists; however, all the trails are available for cross-country skiing when there is sufficient snow cover. Skiers are asked not to use natural areas such as meadows. There are two maintained cross-country skiing trails, one at Oak Openings Preserve Metropark, and one at Secor Metropark.

Oak Openings Ski Trails

At Oak Openings Preserve Metropark there is a one-way loop cross-country ski trail that is a little over 3 miles long. Skiers can take the full loop or a shorter loop. A trail map is available online. Parking is at the Evergreen Lake area.

Secor Ski Trail

The ski trail here is 4.8 miles and goes through woodlands and along meadow edges. Skiers may spot wildlife such as rabbits, coyotes, squirrels, and deer. Parking is at the Secor Center parking lot.
