One of my place favorite places to canoe in Ohio is in Hocking Hills, but be sure to go in late spring or after a good rain, so the water level is higher. Otherwise, the canoe may bottom out.

NTR is located in Bolivar, on the Tuscarawas River. They offer canoeing, kayaking, tubing, camping, fishing, and more. There are three trips available: a 6-mile trip taking around two hours, an 8.5-mile trip taking around three hours, and a 14.5-mile trip taking around six hours.

Trip two can be taken as a two-day trip, as can trip three, where you will canoe 8.5 miles and stay at the campground on day one, then canoe back to the livery on day two.

Birch Bark Canoe Livery in Urbana is on the Mad River which is the ideal place to do some wonderful canoeing. Most of the river in this area is only 3 feet deep, so it is great for guests who may be a bit nervous or have never taken part in this activity before.

The water is incredibly clear, so guests can also see the bottom and will also be able to see any wildlife that is in the river. The current of the river is very gentle, but it has enough power behind it to carry you along. However, guests can paddle against it if they wish to.

Morgan’s Outdoor Adventures

Canoeing trips start in May of each year after the snow of winter has melted away and the river is a bit more stable. Morgan’s Canoe Livery at Fort Ancient was the first livery on the Little Miami River. This is the only livery that is based in the Fort Ancient Gorge of the Little Miami River.

Canoeing in this area is a real treat. There are amazing hillsides that are packed with lush vegetation and the peace and tranquility is one of the major draws of this area. Springtime is a great time to visit as all the flowers and trees are coming into bloom after the harshness of winter.

This area was also home to the Hopewell Indian Tribe and this tribe was known for building mounds. This is an ideal area to do some camping as well, so guests can come for the day, or have a much longer stay.

The Arts in the Alley Music and Arts Festival is held in Grove City’s historic town center in September.

At the Arts in the Alley Music and Arts Festival, you can browse around more than 100 exhibitors displaying and selling their fine art, photography, jewelry, crafts, and much more.

The Voice of Grove City is a singing competition that takes place throughout the weekend with the final being held at noon on Sunday.

There will be lots of free musical entertainment from various genres of music, including local high school bands and choirs.

The Arts in the Alley Parade takes place on Saturday.

Admission and parking are free of charge for this festival.

Festival Hours:

• Sunday: 10 am to 5 pm

About Arts in the Alley

The Grove City Area Chamber of Commerce hosts this festival. More than 100 juried exhibitors display and sell their fine art, photography, jewelry, crafts, glasswork, pottery, and more. Visitors are encouraged to visit as many exhibitors as they can, then vote for the People’s Choice in each show.

There will be a variety of musical entertainment, including local high school bands as well as choirs.

A singing competition – The Voice of Grove City – will feature vocalists performing throughout the weekend. Visitors can vote in this competition and the finalists will perform at noon on Sunday.

The theme of the Arts in the Alley Parade is “Building our Future Together,” and it begins at 9:30 am on Saturday.

Admission and parking are free of charge for this festival.

About Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park

Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park stretches along the Big and Little Darby Creeks for over 13 miles. These rivers are both State and National Scenic Rivers. Over 1,600 acres of wetlands and prairies have been restored over time.

Due to the sheer size of Battelle Darby Creek, many different activities are available here.

Free-roaming bison are a feature of Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park. The official Facebook page has regular updates on where the bison can be seen in the park.

The nature center houses a 53-foot living stream stocked with creatures found in Big Darby Creek. It also has natural and cultural exhibits, some of which are interactive.

Trails at Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park

Battelle Darby Creek has 14 trails. Some of the trails are quite easy to navigate as they are fairly short and flat. Some of the other trails are a bit more challenging and vary in distance.

Ancient Trail

• 2-miles | Easy to Moderate | Hike | Grass and Gravel

This is a loop trail passing through fields and woods. It runs alongside Big Darby Creek, passing a reconstructed Fort Ancient mound. This trail will take around 1 hour to complete.

Camp Chase Trail

• 12.5-miles | Easy to Moderate | Hike | Bike | Pets | Paved | ADA

The Camp Chase trail is only partly in Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park. It is part of the cross-state Ohio to Erie Trail and an integral part of the Central Ohio Greenways network.

The trail begins in Madison County and passes through London, passing by a lot of farmland. On to Georgesville, where the trail passes through the town and leads to Darby Creek Bridge and into the Metro Park.

If you continue the trail, it will head to Galloway, finishing at Hilltop in Columbus. This article from traillink.com has an in-depth description of this trail.

You should probably give this trail at least half a day to complete. It depends very much on your stops along the way!

Darby Creek Greenway Trail

• 5-miles | Easy | Hike | Bike | Pets | Gravel | ADA

This is a flat, one-way trail that passes through prairies and woods. It also goes between the two Bison pastures. Dogs are welcome on this trail. This trail will take around two and a half hours to complete.

Dyer Mill Trail

• 3-miles | Moderate | Hike | Cross-Country Skiing | Grass/Gravel

This loop trail passes through tall grass meadows and secluded woodland. The trail dips down to Little Darby Creek. Cross-country skiing is available on this trail. You can expect to spend 1 hour and 45 minutes hiking this trail.

Edgewood, Lake & Prairie Way Trails

• 2.5-miles | Easy | Hike | Pets | Grass

These trails are listed as one trail but are technically three connecting loop trails: Edgewood Trail is a 1-mile loop trail, Lake Trail is a 1.1-mile loop, and Prairie Way Trail is 0.4-mile. These trails pass through fields and woodlands, around a lake, and along Big Darby Creek. Dogs are welcome here. These trails will take around 1 hour and 15 minutes to complete.

Wagtail Trail

• 1.9-miles | Easy to Moderate | Hike | Pets | Grass

The Wagtail trail has various loops and some out-and-back sections. Dogs are welcome on this trail. You can expect to spend around 1 hour and 20 minutes completing this trail.

Hawthorn Trail

• 0.8-miles | Easy | Hike | Gravel

Hawthorn Trail is a loop trail in the Cedar Ridge Picnic Area. This easy trail will take around 30 minutes to complete.

Harrier Loop, Rail Way & Teal Trails

• 2.7-miles | Moderate | Hike | Grass

This is another set of three interconnected easy-hike trails: Harrier Loop Trail is a 0.8-mile loop trail; Rail Way Trail is a 0.5-mile loop trail, and Teal Trail is a 1.5-mile loop trail. These trails pass through wetlands and prairies. All three trails should take around one and a half hours to complete.

Indian Ridge Trail

• 0.6-miles | Moderate to Difficult | Hike | Gravel

This short one-way trail runs along the Big Darby Creek, through fields and woods, and connects to the Terrace and Cobshell trails. You can expect this trail to take around 20 minutes to complete.

Osprey Lake Trail

• 0.5-miles | Easy | Hike | Grass, gravel

Osprey Lake trail is a loop trail that runs around Osprey Lake – the end of the loop does not connect to the beginning, but to the parking lot. This trail will take around 15 minutes to complete.

Riffle Run Trail

• 0.2-miles | Difficult | Hike | Gravel

Although short, the Riffle Run Trail is a difficult, steep, out-and-back trail leading down to Big Darby Creek. This trail should take less than 10 minutes to complete.

Cobshell Trail

• 1.2-miles | Moderate to Difficult | Hike | Gravel

This one-way trail passes through woods, and there is a scenic deck overlooking Big Darby Creek. Most portions of this trail loop back to the parking lot, so you can choose how long this trail is. If you undertake the full trail, it should take around 40 minutes to complete.

Terrace Trail

• 2.1-miles | Moderate to Difficult | Hike | Gravel

The Terrace trail is a loop trail that goes along Big Darby Creek and then passes through a forest. This hike should take around 1 hour to complete.

Turkey Foot Trail

• 0.5-miles | Easy | Hike | Grass

Turkey Foot Trail is a loop trail that passes through prairies and grasslands. This trail will take around 15 minutes to complete.

Shagbark Shelter – Reservable

• This shelter holds up to 80 people and is equipped with electricity, a grill, a sink, and a serving counter. There are also restrooms and parking for 50 cars. This shelter can be reserved on a full-day or half-day basis.

White Oak Shelter – Reservable

• This shelter holds up to 80 people and is equipped with electricity, a grill, a sink, and a serving counter. White Oak also has a sand volleyball court (you must provide your ball), a drinking fountain, and a swing set. There is parking for 50 cars. This shelter can be reserved on a full-day or half-day basis.

Cedar Ridge Lodge – Reservable

• This lodge can hold up to 72 people, and it has restrooms, Wi-Fi, a gas fireplace, a microwave, grills, a stove, and a 30-cup coffee maker. There is parking for 30 cars, and this shelter is available for all-day bookings

Indian Ridge Picnic Area – Non-Reservable

• Drinking fountain, restrooms, picnic tables, playfields, and grills.
  • 3 Shelters: Enclosed on three sides, each shelter seats 16, with Grills
  • 1 Open Shelter: Seating 16, 1 Grill
  • 1 Open Shelter: Seating 80, 4 Grills

Gibboneys Aerostation

Gibboneys Aerostation is in Grove City, Central Ohio. Flights usually take place at sunrise or sunset, as this is when winds are lightest. Trips take approximately 2-3 hours, including both the pre-flight and post-flight operations. Passengers can take part in these operations as well.

About Scioto Grove Metro Park

The park has several miles of trail, picnic areas, shelters, grills, play areas for kids, and overlook decks.  There is fun for hikers, bikers, kayakers, and more. A sledding hill is available in the snowy winter months.

The entire park is pet-friendly. Leashed pets are welcome in all areas of the park. 

The park has about 4 miles of riverfront, which is a huge attraction for canoeists and kayakers.  The canoeing access can be found at the north and south ends of the park.

There is a fun rope bridge crossing Grant Run Creek on the REI River Trail.  Below the rope bridge are perfectly placed stones that you can hop across to get back to the other side of the creek!

Trails

This metro park has over 7 miles of trails. There are eight total trails here. All trails are rated as easy.

Backpacking

When visiting the park and starting along the trails, we immediately noticed the backpacking areas. They are labeled and provide a picnic table, a gravel-boxed area for your tent, and a grill. 

What is neat about the backpacking and camping areas of Scioto Grove Metro Park is that it is perfect for beginners and for those experts who might not want to travel far and have a quick, fun overnight stay!  This area along the REI Trail is open for reservations online from mid-April through October, weekends only. 

Staying at the backpacking camps is free. Many hikers consider this a beautiful, spacious spot to rest overnight. Others said it is a perfect place to test out your hiking gear. 

Playgrounds

The playgrounds are unique and also a big draw for families. This is not your typical playground. The modern playground is made up of climbing structures and slides. It is perfect for older, more independent kids versus toddlers. There are swings for younger children to enjoy.

Archery

Scioto Grove Metro Park offers a 3D archery course. It has 12 foam animal targets that archers can practice their skills with. There is a traditional archery range as well. When it comes to bows, all kinds can be used; however, broadhead arrows are not permitted.

Shelters at Scioto Grove Metro Park

The Grove is an indoor facility with a large meeting room and lots of windows.  It has a kitchenette, bathrooms, air conditioning, heating, and an outdoor patio. 

In addition to the reservable Grove shelter, there are two other shelter areas which are non-reservable. They are Arrowhead Picnic Area, which has three shelters with grills, and Hickory Picnic Area, which has two shelters with grills.

Sledding

During the snowy winter months, there is a sledding hill available for winter fun. This Ohio sledding hill is located by Backpacking Site #2.
