This farm is a private farm and residence. However, if you call them, they will schedule a private appointment for you to come and visit the farm. They also offer the chance to snuggle up with the goats and other animals.

Downs On The Farm

This is a wonderful place to visit as the main aim of the farm is for all people to get up close and personal with their animals. Downs On The Farm is a federally approved non-profit organization. It is a wonderful place where children who have special requirements are able to pet the lovely animals in peace and tranquility.

The farm also rescues a lot of its animals from abuse, so this place is close to the heart of many people. On the farm, there is also a playground for the kids and train rides.

Stearns Homestead Farm

Stearns Homestead Farm is the last working, educational farm in the Parma area. This farm is open on a seasonal basis from mid-May through to mid-October. The farm has lots of animals to see and pet as well.

This farm is great for kids and adults alike. They hold events throughout the season as well. Check on their website to see any events they are planning when you wish to visit.

Party at the Barn

This is a family-owned petting farm that arranges events as well. If you wish to hold an event at this petting farm, you need to contact them ahead of time to make a reservation. There are several different animals here that love to be petted, including kittens, goats, chicks, and pigs.

They even have a Pony who can give the smaller children a ride. This farm is open on a seasonal basis and offers various event packages, so it is best to check out their website.

The Spicy Lamb Farm

This is an intimate, small, family-run business that is very popular with visitors. The Spicy Lamb Farm has a range of animals that love to see visitors, including ducks, sheep, bees, and other farmyard animals.

Various fruits and vegetables are also grown here, so it is a really lovely setting. Classes, tours, and special events are available if you wish to visit the farm, and the farm also sells products.

The Ohio Bird Sanctuary

Now, this petting farm is a bit different! The Ohio Bird Sanctuary lets visitors enjoy our feathered friends up close and personal. Various viewing areas allow visitors to see birds, such as owls, songbirds, eagles, and hawks.

There is also a walk through the woods down to the local river. Along the walk, you can see the other birds that live here. The Ohio Bird Sanctuary is open all year round.

There are also picnic areas, a visitor’s area, and the children’s Naturescape play area. This establishment is also stroller and wheelchair friendly.

Mill Creek Metroparks Farm

This is quite a large petting farm. It is over 400 acres. There are lots of animals here for visitors to pet, and there is also a focus on education.

This farm offers tours, display areas, and programs as well. There is also a barn that is open on a seasonal basis, ponds, a sunflower field, and an archery Range. There is also a lovely trail that is named after Mindy Henning.

Lake Metroparks Farmpark

This farm is located in Kirtland and has lots of animals for visitors to pet. Some of the animals here include rabbits, horses, alpacas, chickens, sheep, pigs, and cows.

The farm also has wagons drawn by tractors, plus a playground and lots of farm machinery. The farm also hosts numerous events throughout the year, so if you are keen to see an event here, please check out their website.

Hershberger’s Farm & Bakery

Hershberger’s Farm is located in the heart of Ohio’s Amish country. In addition to the family petting area, there is also an Amish bakery, a food trailer, and a store.

The animals here are very friendly and enjoy interacting with people. There are ducks, horses, cows, rabbits, and others. You can also purchase some food to feed the animals. This is a fun day out for all the family.

Hale Farm & Village

Hale Farm and Village is open on a seasonal basis. It is located in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Of course, the farm animals are here and waiting for you to visit, but this farm also offers visitors the opportunity to observe demonstrations in crafts and trade as well.

Talks and demonstrations take place, and these activities tell people how the farm works. The people who work on the farm are in costume, so it really does feel like you are going back in time.

The Farm at Walnut Creek

This petting farm is a bit different as it is a working farm; the practices of the farm change as much as the seasons of the year change. Visitors can view the animals and even feed them as well.

Vertical Descent Snow Tubing at Snow Trails is located near the town of Mansfield, Ohio, and this resort also offers Glow Tubing. This is also the perfect place to bring the smaller ones as there are no age or height restrictions at this resort. 

It should be noted that even though there are no height or age restrictions, only one person is permitted to ride in each tube. One important thing to remember is that each weekend in the season (and on special dates), the hill is lined with LED lights, and it does make a truly spectacular experience! Polar Blast Tubing at Brandywine Ski Resort

Brandywine Ski Resort is located in Peninsula, Ohio. Skiing and snowboarding are available at this resort as well. The Snow Tubing hill here is quite large and is fun for people of all ages.

Each visitor must be able to ride their own tube, so children may not ride on an adult’s lap. ‘Link’ tubes and groups are permitted when going down the hill.

Glow Tubing at Funtimes Fun Park

This resort is a little different, snow tubing on an artificial hill, using synthetic ice; therefore, the activities here are not weather-dependent!

There are height restrictions in place, so it is best to contact them ahead of a visit to avoid disappointment. 

The glow tubing is amazing. As this is a very popular resort, it is a good idea to buy tickets in advance.

Valley’s Edge Snow Tubing

Valley’s Edge, located in New Paris, is one of the smaller resorts in Ohio; however, this does not mean that you cannot have as much fun here. 

This resort is ideal for families. Children must be over 4 and able to ride a tube alone. They do allow ‘links’ of up to three tubes.

Tubing Park at Mad River Mountain

The Bubly Tubing Park at Mad River Mountain is located about 45 minutes Northwest of Columbus in the town of Zanesfield, Ohio. Skiing and snowboarding are also available here. This fantastic resort has the largest tubing park in Ohio. 

Only one person per tube; however, ‘linked’ rides are available on request. There is a height restriction, so it is a good idea to call ahead to check snow conditions and height restrictions.

About Ski Resorts in Ohio

Northeast Ohio has four ski resorts, in Northfield, Summit County; Peninsula, Summit County; Mansfield, Richland County; and Chesterland, Geauga County. Central Ohio has one ski resort in Zanesfield, Logan County.

Brandywine Resort

Brandywine Resort has the largest lift capacity available at any ski resort in the state of Ohio. It is a newer resort than its sister resort, Boston Mills. Brandywine Resort has 8 lifts. 

This is a very popular resort, and it gets quite busy. Even though this is a busy resort, it still offers something for everyone, so whether you are a novice or a professional, you’re sure to find something to suit you! This resort also offers lessons to guests, both skiers and snowboarders. 

Night skiing is available every night of the week, and on selected Fridays, the resort will stay open until 1 am. There is also a tubing park called The Polar Blast Tubing Park, and this has 20 tubing lanes.

Boston Mills

Boston Mills is the sister resort of Brandywine, and it is a much more intimate and smaller resort. There are 7 lifts and 7 trails. Whilst this is smaller than its sister site, Boston Mills is home to the steepest slope in Ohio, known as Tiger. 

Tiger is known to be a bit of a challenge, and this is why Boston Mills draws in the crowds. It should also be noted that skiers of all abilities are welcome.

Snow Trails

Snow Trails is located between the cities of Cleveland and Columbus. This ski resort is family-owned. It was the first ski resort to open in Ohio in 1961. A lot of snow falls in this area, so skiing is available on a regular basis in the winter months. Also, when there is not as much snow as required, Snow trails have snow-making machines that help top up the snow when needed.

Snow Trails is a great place to learn how to ski if you are just starting out. There are also lessons on offer for beginners that can be tailored to their requirements. It is also important to note that a fifth of the trails at Snow Trails are for experts as well, so this ski resort is not just set up for beginners and novices.

Alpine Valley

Alpine Valley is a smaller ski resort situated in Chesterland, Ohio. On average, Alpine Valley receives the most snowfall out of all of Ohio’s ski resorts! This ski resort is based in the heart of the snowy areas. Alpine Valley can boast an average of 120 inches of snowfall over the season, and the snow is perfect for skiing as it is lake-effect snow. 

There are over 70 acres of land on this ski resort, plus it has 7 lifts and 25 trails. The resort also has a half-pipe and a tubing park. Skiers of all abilities are welcome here, and there is something for everyone.

You can rent equipment here, and lessons are also available. There is night skiing here as well, plus there is food and drink available in the lodge.

Mad River Mountain

Mad River Mountain in Zanesfield is the largest Ski resort in the state of Ohio. This ski resort has been in operation since the early 1960s and is located just 1 hour away from Columbus. This is a very popular resort that offers many different winter activities. 

There is an average snowfall of 36 inches each season; however, even though this resort does not get a lot of snow, there is an army of workers on standby with snow machines who boost the churn of snow that is on offer. 

Mad Mountain River also offers the Bubly Tube Park, and as you can imagine, this is very popular!

The Shawshank Self-Guided Driving Tour takes you to 15 locations where scenes from the film The Shawshank Redemption were shot.

Renaissance Theatre

The Renaissance Theatre in Mansfield is owned and run by the Renaissance Performing Arts Association and provides programming in education, theatre, and music.

This theater seats 1,400 and is a beautiful step back in time. The restoration has been carried out very sympathetically, and it is probably little changed from its initial opening in 1928.

BibleWalk

BibleWalk is Ohio’s only wax museum, featuring more than 300 wax figures in 100 life-size scenes. There are seven interactive tours available. Visitors can press buttons triggering sound effects and dialogue.

This museum was built entirely by the congregants of the adjacent Diamond Hill Cathedral.

The tours have a small charge. Exhibits are free and open to the public. Group rates are available, and an after-hours BibleWalk Glow for groups can be booked in advance.

Mansfield Memorial Museum

The Mansfield Memorial Museum, formerly the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall, was founded in 1889 by Edward Wilkinson, a collector for the Smithsonian Institute, Carnegie Natural History Museum, and Peabody Field Museum.

Collections at the Mansfield Memorial Museum include major wars, natural history, public documents from Richland County and the City of Mansfield, and the industrial history of Mansfield.

Westinghouse was a manufacturer of appliances between 1918 and 1990. At its height, it employed more than 8,000 people. There is a collection of over 250 small Westinghouse appliances, including the ‘singing dryer’ and the first working robot, ‘Elektro’.

Oak Hill Cottage Museum

Oak Hill Cottage is a mid-nineteenth-century house in the Gothic revival style. Built by John Riley Robinson in 1847.

Dr. Johannes Jones purchased Oak Hill Cottage in 1864 and his family lived there until 1965 when the Richland County Historical Society purchased it and opened it as a house museum.

The house has been restored and preserved, and all the Victorian furnishings and artifacts in the house belonged to the Jones family.

Tours of the house are available and last approximately one hour and a gift shop is in the basement of the building.

The Mansfield Playhouse

The Mansfield Playhouse is the second oldest continuously-producing theater in the state of Ohio.

The schedule for the season is available on their website, and the schedule is for about seven months in advance. Tickets are also available online.

The Mansfield Fire Museum

The Mansfield Fire Museum is a reproduction of an early 20th-century Fire Station. There is an antique alarm bell that alerted the firemen, horse stables, pictures, and displays of firefighting equipment from the past.

Walk down part of North Main Street and visit an old-time drugstore with an authentic marble soda fountain.

If you are visiting Mansfield with children, there are plenty of places to visit to keep them occupied and happy, as well as some fun for the grown-ups!

Buckeye Imagination Museum

The Buckeye Imagination Museum is an immersive children’s museum with over 40 interactive exhibits. The exhibits will enthrall children and also help parents and caregivers to see the world through the eyes of a child.

Interactive exhibits include a theater, a post office, a fire truck, a police station, and a grocery store.

Ohio Bird Sanctuary

Ohio Bird Sanctuary is a private non-profit organization that was originally called the Richland County Raptor Center. It was founded in 1988 and the birds were housed in a barn.

Today the Sanctuary is a haven for native birds, a nature preserve, as well as a living museum. There are four miles of trails through 90 acres of meadow and forest, a treehouse classroom, a Songbird Aviary, and live bird displays.

Richland Carrousel Park

Richland Carrousel Park was built in 1990 and is the first new hand-carved carousel to be built in the US since the 1930s.

The carousel features 30 horses and 22 menagerie figures, as well as chariots. Guarding the entrance are two bronze horses which were put in place in 2003.

Richland Carrousel Park is wheelchair accessible. The horse in front of each of the chariots swivel, and the chariot seat flips up to accommodate a wheelchair.

B&O Bike Trail

The B&O Bike Trail follows the route of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad line, Indianapolis to Springfield, Illinois. It is still a work in progress.

This bike trail in Richland County spans 18.4 miles, connecting four communities. Along this trail, you will go across 18 bridges, past open fields, and through Kingswood Center Gardens.

Take as long as you like on this trail, there are plenty of places to stop and visit. You will travel through Butler, Belville, Lexington, and Mansfield.

Note: the Bellville, Butler, and Lexington libraries offer a variety of bikes for you to ride with a valid MRCPL library card.

Kingwood Center Gardens

At Kingwood Center Gardens, Kingwood Hall has five levels, including a basement, three living levels, and a full attic. The Hall is open for scheduled guided tours.

The Gardens contain The Allee, with beautiful seasonal displays; The Display Greenhouse, individual houses with tropicals, succulents, bromeliads, and seasonal arrangements; The Perennial Garden, Mr King’s Formal Gardens, Terrace Garden, Woodland Garden, and Herb, Rose, as well as Trial Gardens where the gardeners trial new plants.

There is also the Courtyard Complex, the Duck Pond, the Nature Pond, Peacock Playhouse: The Kingwood Sensory Center, and the Storybook Trail.

Malabar Farm State Park

Malabar Farm State Park is nearly 1,000 acres and is located in the rolling foothills of Ohio. It was the home of Pulitzer Prize-winning author and conservationist Louis Bromfield.

At Malabar Farm you can have a wagon tour, house tour, cabin rental, and primitive camping is also available. 

There are four trails at Malabar Farm State Park:

Gorman Nature Center

Gorman Nature Center is owned and managed by the Richland County Park District. It features 150 acres of forest, prairies, ponds, and streams.

There are over five miles of trails as well as weekly programs for the public featuring hikes, field trips, and natural history programs.

In the winter cross country skiing is available.

Fowler Woods State Nature Preserve

This nature preserve is one of the best places in Ohio to see wildflowers in spring, as well as many nesting birds, such as Redstart, Red-Headed Woodpecker, and Ovenbird.

Fowler Woods covers an area of 187 acres and is the only state nature preserve in Richland County.

Charles Mill Lake Park

Charles Mill Lake Park is on 2,000 acres spread across Richland and Ashland Counties. Features of this park are the Charles Mill Dam which was constructed in 1935-36 on the Black Fork Creek for flood control; Charles Mill Lake covers an area of 1,350 acres and provides fishing, sailing, and boating opportunities.

There are two campgrounds with a total of 457 campsites, all of which have a picnic table as well as a fire ring. Some campsites have a 30-amp electrical service.

Three patio cabins are available, they do not have running water or restrooms, however, facilities are nearby.
