Buttermilk Falls

Buttermilk Falls is in the North Chagrin Reservation of Cleveland Metroparks. There is a scenic overlook to take in all the surrounding beauty.

There is ample parking at the Buttermilk Falls Trailhead, and the scenic overlook is a short walk across Buttermilk Falls Parkway.

The overlook is a wooded deck providing a view of the geology of North Chagrin Reservation.

The water from Buttermilk Creek travels to the Chagrin River, which flows into Lake Erie.

Nearby attractions include the North Chagrin Nature Center, Squire’s Castle, and North Chagrin Oxbow Lagoon.

“Listening to the cadence of water running down the rocks brings peace and comfort to many.

It took millions of years for this fleeting moment to occur. The rocks in the waterfall are made up of compressed organic matter from over 365 million years ago. Organic matter includes the bodies of plants and animals, which is how we can find fossils preserved in these rocks.

Over time, water slowly eroded away the stone and soil to create this magnificent gorge. The rocks of Cleveland shale are made up of thin layers which can easily break and crumble. The power of water breaks these fragile rock layers apart over time. This fracturing in the rock formation creates waterfalls.

Buttermilk Falls is a park of the Chagrin River Watershed, which means the water will continue to flow from here, to the Chagrin River, and eventually Lake Erie.”
