Holden Arboretum

Holden Arboretum is a 3,500-acre ecological museum with forests, cultivated gardens, seasonal activities, and attractions. Situated in Kirtland, northeast Ohio.

Holden Arboretum has 10 hiking trails, totaling 25 miles. Three trails are combinations of the six shorter trails.

Individual Trails

Pierson Valley Trails

4½ miles | Moderate | 3 hours

This trail consists of stairs up and down, steep hills, uneven natural terrain, and creek crossings. Although rated ‘moderate’, it is quite challenging! The trail branches into three smaller trails.

Conifer Trail

½ mile | Easy | 30 minutes

This loop trail is through conifers, including white and Nordmann fir trees, and pines. Look out for unique pinecones along this trail!

Blueberry Pond Trail

0.33 miles | Moderate | 30 minutes

This loop trail is a must for nature lovers. Spot dragonflies and frogs along the water’s edge, and the water lilies on the pond. It’s all surrounded by mature trees.

Woodland Trail

¾ mile | Easy | 45 minutes

This trail has a meditation point along the route with a beautiful outlook. You can access a guided meditation through your mobile. See turtles, frogs, and spring peepers at Buttonbush Bog.

Bole Woods Loop

0.84 miles | Moderate | 45 minutes

This loop trail winds through mature forest of beech, sugar maple, western red cedar, and more. Look out for deer and wild turkeys along this trail.

Corning Lake Trail

0.66 miles | Easy | 40 minutes

Explore the shoreline of Corning Lake and Fordham Island on this loop trail. There is a great birding spot along the way, look out for warblers, duck, blue heron, coots and buffleheads.

Combination Trails

The Woodsy Hike

1½ miles | Moderate | 45 minutes
A combination of the Woodland Trail and the Blueberry Pond Trail.

The Birders’ Delight Hike

1¾ miles | Easy | 1 hour
A combination of the Corning Lake Trail and the Conifer Trail.

The Wildlife Hike

2 miles | Moderate | 1½ hours
A combination of the Bole Woods Loop and the Blueberry Pond Trail.

Things to do at Holden Arboretum include the Corning Visitor Center, the Murch Canopy Walk, Rhododendron Gardens, an observation tower, a wildflower garden, a butterfly garden, the display garden, an art gallery, and a library.

For the youngsters, there is Buckeye Bud’s Adventure Woods, where there are numerous activities for kids to get involved in nature at its best!

During the fall, there is a Leaf Trail. Collect a brochure at the Arboretum and follow the trail trying to find one of each of the 27 varieties of leaves. There are rules to this trail that will be in the brochure, or you can check them out online before you visit.
