You have a good chance of seeing one of these garter snakes in Ohio gardens and countryside. These snakes are also at home in states such as Michigan and Indiana.

These snakes can be shy, but if an individual lets you handle it, then they tend to be quite placid. The Butler’s Garter Snake is usually found in places that are very quiet and have been abandoned by people and other species of animals. An example is fields that used to be worked and have since been left alone. The Butler’s Garter Snake enjoys feasting on leeches and earthworms.

The Eastern Ribbons Garter Snake can be found throughout the southeastern United States. The Eastern Ribbon Snake is semi-aquatic. These snakes do enjoy being in places that have humidity. Some examples of habitats are damp wood, swamps, lakes, rivers, meadows, and wet prairies.

While they do enjoy a lot of time in damp environments, they do spend the majority of their time out of water. While most garter snakes consume land-dwelling animals, the Eastern Ribbon Snake stands as an exception; they prefer to eat tadpoles, toads, frogs, small fish, and salamanders.

This garter snake has a very slender tail, so it does stand out from other species of garter snakes.

The Eastern Garter Snake is the most common type of garter snake that can be found in Ohio. This is a subspecies of the common garter snake.

This species of snake is not only present in Ohio but also extends along the eastern region of the United States. The most common places to find this species of snake are in places like ponds, rivers, streams, prairies, and grasslands.

This snake can have different colors on its sides. Some individuals may be brown, green, or blue, and some may be yellow. A lot of the common garter snakes found west of Lake Erie are black.

The Shorthead garter snake exists in Ohio; however, it is much less common than the other featured garter snakes. Pockets of individuals have been found around the Youngstown area.

These snakes prefer quieter environments, places like abandoned buildings and fields. They also prefer to stay in close proximity to water sources, which leads them to inhabit areas near lakes and rivers. The Shorthead garter snake is quite small, growing to a maximum length of 18 inches. Their heads are also very small and look quite compacted into the rest of the body.

Kiser Lake State Park is a favorite for people who like to spend the day fishing or paddling. There are several boat ramps along the lake’s 5 miles of shoreline. This park has 531 acres of woodland and wetlands as well as the 396-acre lake, which is nearly 2.5 miles long with 5.3 miles of shoreline.

History

The Kiser Lake region was home to Tecumseh, the great Shawnee warrior. He lived and hunted on Black Creek, near present-day Urbana. Simon Kenton, a legendary frontiersman, was held captive here by the Shawnee. Kenton admired the area and remembered it and returned to it later in his life. Kenton settled in Urbana for several years and his remains lie in Oakdale Cemetery under an impressive monument.

Kiser Lake was the dream of John W. Kiser and his family. They wanted to create a lake in Mosquito Valley that was low, swampy, and had numerous springs. In 1932, several hundred acres of Mosquito Creek Valley were offered by the Kiser family to the state of Ohio. A dam was constructed, and the new lake was named Kiser Lake, becoming part of Kiser Lake State Park.

Natural Features

Two natural phenomena caused by the glaciers of the Ice Age helped shape the area of Kiser Lake State Park into its present landscape. The wooded hills were caused by glacial deposits left when the glacier stops advancing (called an end- or terminal-moraine) either completely or for a time. This creates a linear ridge along the front of the ice. A moraine occurred on three sides around the lake area, creating an elevation with boulders called erratics – a familiar sight at Kiser Lake State Park – across the area.

The other feature is a kame field at the southeastern end of the lake. Kames are mounds of sand and gravel formed by meltwater flowing across glacial ice.

Indian Mound Reserve is essentially three parks rolled into one. On the west side, there is Peterson Park, Williamson Mound is at the north point, and Cedar Cliff Falls is on the east side, just outside Cedarville. Each park has its own individual charm, yet it is all interconnected to give visitors a unique experience.

Indian Mound Reserve has had an interesting past. The park is over 165 acres in size and it has some amazing areas where visitors can take in the natural beauty and history of the park. The park has a stunning waterfall, walking trails, and a restored pre-victorian log house.

The two forks of Massies Creek flow through Cedarville from the east. This is where the creek flows in a westward direction towards the Little Miami River.

For the first two miles, the creek utilizes a sheer canyon that reaches up to 12 meters below the surface of the terrain.

By the end of the Victorian era, the area known as the ‘cliffs’ became a great place for people to have picnics and lunches. As time went on, more and more people were visiting this magnificent area and there were demands to turn it into a park.

In 1929, Williamson Mound was donated to the Ohio Historical Society and today Indian Mound Reserve is operated as a unit of Greene County Parks.

The Williamson Mound is a large mound in a field close to Massies Creek. This mound is perfectly oval. Trees on the mound’s surface with hundreds of years of growth prove the mound is very old.

From the top of the mound, you can see far into the distance. It was said to be constructed so that the people using it were able to see any enemies who were on the attack.

It is believed that residents decided to dig around the mound in the early twentieth century. Fortunately, from this act, there does not seem to have been any damage to the mound.

Recent archaeological studies of the site have concluded that the Adena people constructed the mound before the birth of Christ. The studies showed that the construction of the mound took a long time.

The Pollock Works is situated on the Southern side of Massies Creek. The northern and southern sides are steep limestone walls and they have an average height of 7.6 meters and are now known as ‘the cliffs’.

Excavations carried out by a Wright State University archaeologist and team have proved that the Hopewell Culture built the Pollock Works. They were built in a five-stage process.

Although it appears that this site was also used as a hill fort, it seems to be more important as a religious site and it is one of numerous Hopewell hilltop ceremonial sites.

Cedar Cliff Falls was constructed in 1887 as a stone dam for the flour mill that was located behind the falls. The Falls replaced an old dam that had been destroyed in a flood. The dam is approximately 30 feet wide and 40 feet high.

Catholic worship on this site dates back to 1749. In the 1830s, a priest administered rights for Catholics in Marietta. The priest would conduct mass in ‘the little brick house of one Felix McGuire’ at the corner of South Fifth and Hart Streets. By 1838, the catholic population was large enough that the Bishop of Cincinnati appointed a full-time priest in Washington County.

There are over 300,000 known species of beetles in the world, and it is anyone’s guess how many others are waiting to be discovered!

Beetles are valuable insects in many ways. They are decomposers, especially in woodlands and forests. Beetles are predators of other, nuisance insects, such as aphids and caterpillars. For this reason, ladybugs are available to purchase for agriculturalists to keep their crops free from harmful insects.

However, beetles can also be destructive, especially to trees, and some species are detrimental to farmers and their crops and stored goods. With so many varieties, it is no wonder they are both good and bad!

Some interesting facts are: most beetles only live for one year; beetles cannot see very well, so they communicate using sounds and vibrations; not all beetles are pests, ladybugs, for instance, are considered to be good luck in some cultures; there are 12,000 varieties of beetles in the US and over 300,000 known species in the world.

The Asian Multicolored Lady Beetles is an invasive beetle that landed on our shores in the 1970s. Asian Multicolored Lady Beetles are known to mimic Ohio’s native Lady Beetles. Also known as the Asian Ladybug.

It is a highly adaptable species that has spread across the entire North American continent since its introduction in the 1970s.

This species is not uniform in color. Some individuals can be red, some can be brown and some can be orange. They also have different numbers of dots between individuals. One useful marker that they do have is white coloring around the neck area. This is a way to distinguish them from the native species.

Measures can be taken to stop them from damaging plants. Praying Mantis eggs can be purchased and the Praying Mantis can be used as a predator. Soapy sprays are also a way of controlling them. As previously stated, they also like to congregate and come indoors before the winter. They can go to places like lofts, so it is important that places like this are sealed correctly. They do not damage property, but they can create a bad smell if there is a large number of them.

Slate Run Metro Park is a 1,705+ acre park that features a variety of things to see and visit. You can find open areas of grasslands, wetlands, and meadows, as well as forested areas.

Beech, Oak, Hickory, and Sugar Maple are some of the trees in this park. There is a 156-acre wetland which is home to Sandhill cranes.

Although this park is close to the hustle and bustle of a big city, it is far enough away from the noise pollution that you can truly enjoy the quiet!

A bit of history, the park isn’t actually sitting on top of slate rock, settlers from long ago mistook the dark soil for slate. The soft rock is actually shale!
