Mary Jane Thurston State Park is a small park covering 105 acres. Situated along the Maumee State Scenic River, there are many activities to enjoy in this park.
About Mary Jane Thurston State Park
In 1928, a school teacher, Mary Jane Thurston, bequeathed 14 acres of land to be used as a park. The park was dedicated in 1968.
Mary Jane Thurston State Park in Grand Rapids, northwest Ohio, offers a variety of both day and overnight activities. The Maumee River provides some of the best stream fishing in the state. There are remnants of the old canal to be explored, a campground, and more nature and fun activities.

When I explore Mary Jane Thurston State Park, I find that despite its size (105 acres), there’s no shortage of activities. The trails may be short, but they offer good hiking, and the Storybook trail is a delightful experience. If you’re looking for a compact park with enjoyable activities, this is a hidden gem worth checking out!
Activities and Facilities
Boating and Fishing
There is a launch ramp with access to the Maumee River. Perfect for motor boats, paddle boats, and sailboats. Kayaks are available to rent. For information about the dock and marina and the weather conditions, call the park office 419-832-7662.
Fishing on the Maumee River is available for those with a valid Ohio fishing license (Ohio fishing regulations apply). Catches include Walleye, white bass, smallmouth and largemouth bass, channel and flathead catfish, bullhead, and crappie.
Archery and Hunting
The archery range is on the east side of the day-use area. The range includes both static and 3-D targets. Targets are 10, 20, 30, and 40 yards. You will need to bring your own equipment.
A designated section of shoreline is open to waterfowl hunting and trapping. A section is open to archery hunting only. A valid Ohio hunting license is required. Ohio hunting and trapping regulations apply.
Day Lodge and Camping
The day lodge can be reserved all year round and it can hold up to 50 people. The lodge has heat/air conditioning, a covered porch, electricity, tables, two grills, a wood fireplace, and two picnic tables.
The Mary Jane Thurston Campground has 16 sites for tent camping and 23 electric sites. Facilities available for campers are:
- Latrines and restrooms are located nearby
- Potable fill station and dump station near the park office
- An outdoor shower is located in the campground.
- Saturday night movies at the amphitheater
- Playground
Trails
There are four short hiking trails and a Storybook Trail.
- Blue Trail | 1.2 miles | Easy
- Orange Trail | 0.5 mile | Easy
- Tow Path | 0.3 miles | Easy (continues into the village of Grand Rapids)
- Yellow Trail | 0.5 mile | Easy
Storybook Trail – 0.45 mile – Easy
- The Storybook Trail presents a story in segments along the short, mowed path. See and hear frogs, turtles, bald eagles, and fish jumping in the water. The storybook changes throughout the year.
