Kalahari Resort

Kalahari Resort is the largest indoor water park in the country and is based in Sandusky. Facilities include a spa for adults only, a lazy river, a toddler play area, a surf simulator, and a swim-up bar. There is also an arcade, an escape room, and a 7-D theater.

Experience panning for gold or finding gemstones from around the world at the Hocking Hills Gem Mine & Gold Rush.

There are three different gem buckets and two gold buckets to choose from at varying prices:

• Lil Prospect – rough gemstones
• Rock Hound – rough and tumbled gemstones
• Motherlode – the largest selection of rough gemstones
• Gold Rush – gold
• Lucky Strike – gold

Take-home gem mining kits are available, including a bag of gem rough, a mining screen, a suede bag, and a gemstone ID card.

When you are done mining, you can pay a visit to the Rock Shop, where you will discover a great variety of unique gemstone items for sale.

The mining sluice is open to the public from 10 am to 6 pm daily.

About Idyll Reserve

Sustainability is at the heart of the Idyll Reserve ethos. There are two electric car charging stations on the property. The cabins use Birch mattresses, which are made from natural, non-toxic materials. The bedding used at Idyll Reserve is organic.

The furniture inside the Idyll Reserve cabins is FSC-certified furniture from places like West Elm. You will see upcycled or vintage pieces throughout the property. There are organic or locally sourced products at Idyll Reserve, such as coffee, tea, and other items.

Whether you are interested in sustainability or not, Idyll Reserve shows you how to easily incorporate it into your life. The way sustainability is intertwined with the entire property is amazing. They make sustainability sexy and luxurious!

What is Included with the Cabins?

All five cabins have the same facilities and amenities.

A fully stocked kitchen: we are talking about every single item you need…utensils, dishes, wine glasses, champagne flutes, coffee mugs, coffee maker (2 kinds), an espresso machine, pots, pans, stovetop, microwave, fridge, freezer, dishwasher, and more!

Each cabin at Idyll Reserve has an outdoor area with a fireplace, a fire pit, or a fire table. They provide the firewood and fire starters!

There is also an eco-friendly hot tub at each cabin.  I spent time in this every single day!

If you have young children, you will be happy to hear that there is a high chair and a pack-n-play with bedding in each cabin. 

There is WiFi, TV with Netflix, HBO Max, and Disney Plus. A great sound system is connected to Spotify.

A washboard once featured in almost every house; of course, that was before electricity and automatic washers were invented. The washboard was invented around the mid-1830s and made life so much easier than the laborious process of hand washing!

The Columbus Washboard Company has been producing washboards since 1895 and still uses some of the vintage tools and machinery to create its products.

Washboards these days can still be used for scrubbing clothes. They can be purely decorative or used as a musical instrument, mainly for bluegrass music.

Guided tours of the factory are available three times per day. There is an admission fee.

There is a wide range of sizes and designs of washboards available to purchase, as well as handmade soaps and salves, vintage laundry items, Fostoria glassware, and more.

The Mural Project

The Mural Project is a series of artworks on the floodwall that protects Portsmouth from the Ohio River. This wall is 20 feet high and 2,090 feet along Front Street in the Boneyfiddle District.

Painting began in 1993, and all the art has been produced by artist Robert Dafford. This ongoing project depicts the history of Portsmouth and the surrounding areas for the last two centuries.

Most of the works have a 3-dimensional effect, making viewers feel they can step right into the scene!

Candyland Children’s Museum

The Happy Pot

This is a great fun family time experience! Paint your own pottery from a selection of pottery pieces. Learn about different glazes and techniques to decorate your pot.

There are frequent special painting events hosted here, such as holiday-themed sessions (like Bunny Ears Wine and Canvas), and workshops with guest artists.

Available for individual or group visits. Booking is available online, the facility is open Thursday through Sunday.

Otway Bridge

Otway is a little northwest of Portsmouth – about 20 miles, 30 minutes by car. The bridge is the last remaining covered bridge in Scioto County.

Built in 1874, this historic covered bridge is not only a testament to the architectural styles of the past but also a beloved symbol of the area’s rich heritage. It was fully restored in 2014.

During the holiday season, Otway Bridge is adorned with lights and seasonal decorations. In December there is the ‘Light of the Bridge’ parade and drive-thru. Something everyone can take part in, decorate your vehicle to join in the parade or even pull a float!

White Gravel Mines

White Gravel Mines in Minford are just a short distance northeast of Portsmouth – about 14 miles, 20 minutes by car. This is not just a wander through crystal caves, it is a complete production!

With two annual events, The Christmas Cave and The Easter Cave, this free-to-visit destination tells stories through lights and displays. The Christmas Cave tells the story of the birth of Jesus, and the Easter Cave tells the story of the life of Jesus.

The journey through the cave is on a path of approximately ¾ of a mile and will take around 45 minutes.

Deadbolt Escape Rooms and Mysteries

With a choice of six rooms, fans of this popular pastime can have great fun here! Each room has a one-hour time limit. The location is an abandoned historic shoe factory in the Boneyfiddle District of Portsmouth.

Southern Ohio Axe Throwing

Axe throwing is another popular pastime these days. It may sound like a dangerous day out, but it really isn’t. Your party will have guidance throughout your visit, and you will be taught how to throw an axe into the target.

Children must be over the age of 8, and no open-toed shoes should be worn. Online booking is necessary.

Lofts Coffee Company and Roastery roast their own coffees, have a full bakery, and serve food, wine, and cocktails.  They also make K-cups, which are filled with fresh roasted and fresh ground coffee.  Their coffee pods are 100% recyclable and filled to order.

You can also purchase coffee from Lofts online, from a pack of 12 pods to a 5lb whole bean bag, and you can even create your own blend by choosing the percentage of Dark Roast, Medium Roast, and Light Roast beans.

The season is between four and six weeks, typically between March and May. There are four types of Morel mushrooms, the black Morel, the gray Morel, the yellow Morel, and the Bigfoots. Bigfoots are very rare and are up to 10 times the size of the other Morels. They appear late in the season.

Morel mushroom season starts in the south of Ohio and works its way north, so if you want to ‘chase Morels’, start in the south and move northward each week.

The best places to find Morels are at the base of dead trees, particularly ash and elm, under or beside fallen trees, under bark, and where there has been fire or flood.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources has produced a series of four videos about Morel Mushrooms, from finding them to cooking them. Each one is shown below with the main points listed after the video.

Where to Find Morels and Identification

Main Points

• Normally associated with ash trees and elm trees, particularly dead ones. Also look at the bases of apple trees and Tulip Poplars.
• Beware of False Morels – they are poisonous! When you get your morels home, be sure to cut them lengthwise and make sure they are hollow in the middle.

Mushroom Hunting Tips

Main Points

• The date for Morel hunting is less important than what is in flower. When Redbuds, Violets, and Trilliums are in bloom, the mushrooms will be in peak season.
• It’s a good idea to wear long pants as you may encounter poison ivy, bugs, and/or snakes.
• Carry two bags with you. One is for morels you are sure of, and the other is for those that you’re not certain about, to keep them separate. The bags should be made of mesh (like onion bags) so the spores can fall through to the forest floor.

Finding and Picking Morels

Main Points

• Scan the area you are hunting in. If you spot a fallen tree, take a look. If nothing is immediately obvious, use a walking stick to gently move the leaves around to see if there are any mushrooms. If you find one, there will almost certainly be more.
• To pick the mushroom, pinch the base so that you don’t disturb the root and everything that is underground.
• Never ask another mushroom hunter where they found their hoard – they won’t tell you and it’s considered poor etiquette!

Preparing and Cooking Morels

Main Points

• Check your mushrooms are real and not false Morels. The cap should be attached to the stem all around, it doesn’t hang like a bell on the stem. Cut the mushroom lengthwise and make sure it is hollow. False Morels have white fibers along the center. ‘If it’s not hollow, don’t swallow!’
• To clean the mushrooms, use a spray bottle and spray over a bowl. You can then take the bowl of water that now has spores in it and pour it at the base of a tree in your yard, or a nearby tree if possible – you never know, you may have your own crop next year!
• There are many recipes out there for cooking Morels, such as this air fryer method. The mushrooms in this recipe are stuffed and breaded.

Morel Mushroom Hunting in State Parks

Many of Ohio’s State Parks, State Forests, and State Wildlife Areas allow mushroom hunting, but there are rules so you will need to contact the park office. One rule that applies to all parks is that you must stay on the trail, off-trail collecting is prohibited.

Many National Parks do not permit mushroom hunting. It is important to check with the park office if you wish to look for Morels in any of these parks.

About Lake Hope State Park

Lake Hope State Park covers an area of 2,983 acres and is a heavily forested region. The park surrounds the 120-acre lake.

Most of the region’s forest was cut to fuel the industry in the area, but the land recovered and is now a second-growth forest. Oak and hickory trees dominate.

Wildlife such as deer and wild turkey are in this park, and beavers are also in numbers here. Look out for them near the quiet inlets of the lake!

Activities and Facilities

Boating

The lake has one boat ramp along State Route 278. Hand-powered crafts and electric motor boats are permitted. The Boathouse has canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, and paddle boats for rent in spring, summer, and fall.

Swimming

There is a 600-foot beach where visitors can swim. There is a beach house with restrooms and a sun deck and patio, a boathouse with shelter, and concessions.

Fishing and Hunting

Fish in Lake Hope include bluegill, catfish, crappie, and largemouth bass. Anglers will need a valid Ohio fishing license, and Ohio fishing regulations apply. A downloadable fishing map is available.

Hunting is not available in the park but is permitted in the adjacent Zaleski State Forest.

Trails

There are eight hiking trails and eight mountain biking trails in this park.

Camping and Cabins

Lake Hope State Park Campground has 46 electric sites and 143 non-electric sites. Two camper cabins have some furnishings. There are heated showerhouses, flush toilets, pit latrines, waste disposal, and laundry facilities.

With the widest variety of cabins of any of the Ohio state parks, Lake Hope has Standard and Legacy cabins. All of these cabins are well-equipped with kitchen, bathroom with shower, living room with cable TV. A few of each type of cabin are pet-friendly.

Laurel Lodge is a fully furnished rustic lodge that can accommodate up to 24 guests. Featuring a stone woodburning fireplace, large patio with picnic tables and charcoal pit, and a fire ring with bench swings surrounding it.
