Shawnee State Park

Located in the Appalachian foothills near the Ohio River, the 1,095-acre Shawnee State Park was once the hunting grounds for Native American Shawnee tribes.

Set within the 63,000-acre Shawnee State Forest, the scenic trail system offers a variety of options for nature lovers. There are two lakes and access to the Ohio River.

The Mural Project

The Mural Project is a series of artworks on the floodwall that protects Portsmouth from the Ohio River. This wall is 20 feet high and 2,090 feet along Front Street in the Boneyfiddle District.

Painting began in 1993, and all the art has been produced by artist Robert Dafford. This ongoing project depicts the history of Portsmouth and the surrounding areas for the last two centuries.

Most of the works have a 3-dimensional effect, making viewers feel they can step right into the scene!

Candyland Children’s Museum

The Happy Pot

This is a great fun family time experience! Paint your own pottery from a selection of pottery pieces. Learn about different glazes and techniques to decorate your pot.

There are frequent special painting events hosted here, such as holiday-themed sessions (like Bunny Ears Wine and Canvas), and workshops with guest artists.

Available for individual or group visits. Booking is available online, the facility is open Thursday through Sunday.

Otway Bridge

Otway is a little northwest of Portsmouth – about 20 miles, 30 minutes by car. The bridge is the last remaining covered bridge in Scioto County.

Built in 1874, this historic covered bridge is not only a testament to the architectural styles of the past but also a beloved symbol of the area’s rich heritage. It was fully restored in 2014.

During the holiday season, Otway Bridge is adorned with lights and seasonal decorations. In December there is the ‘Light of the Bridge’ parade and drive-thru. Something everyone can take part in, decorate your vehicle to join in the parade or even pull a float!

White Gravel Mines

White Gravel Mines in Minford are just a short distance northeast of Portsmouth – about 14 miles, 20 minutes by car. This is not just a wander through crystal caves, it is a complete production!

With two annual events, The Christmas Cave and The Easter Cave, this free-to-visit destination tells stories through lights and displays. The Christmas Cave tells the story of the birth of Jesus, and the Easter Cave tells the story of the life of Jesus.

The journey through the cave is on a path of approximately ¾ of a mile and will take around 45 minutes.

Deadbolt Escape Rooms and Mysteries

With a choice of six rooms, fans of this popular pastime can have great fun here! Each room has a one-hour time limit. The location is an abandoned historic shoe factory in the Boneyfiddle District of Portsmouth.

The rooms include Murder at Boddy Mansion, Precinct 740, and Castle Dracula. Book online, where you will need to sign a waiver. Gift cards are also available online.

Southern Ohio Axe Throwing

Axe throwing is another popular pastime these days. It may sound like a dangerous day out, but it really isn’t. Your party will have guidance throughout your visit, and you will be taught how to throw an axe into the target.

Children must be over the age of 8, and no open-toed shoes should be worn. Online booking is necessary.

Lofts Coffee Company and Roastery roast their own coffees, have a full bakery, and serve food, wine, and cocktails.  They also make K-cups, which are filled with fresh roasted and fresh ground coffee.  Their coffee pods are 100% recyclable and filled to order.

River Days

River Days – held over Labor Day weekend with family fun and live music on the riverfront in Portsmouth and the surrounding area.

Winterfest

Fallen Timbers Art Festival takes place at The Shops at Fallen Timbers in Maumee. A weekend of art and entertainment in early November.

Fallen Timbers Art Festival is a free event that aims to uplift the community and bring local and fine artists into the spotlight.

There will be an opportunity to purchase art made from materials such as glass, metal, fiber, clay, and wood- Including sculpture, jewelry, paintings, photography, and more.

There will be wine tastings, indoor coffee service, and food trucks.

There is a silent auction to raise funds for the Anthony Wayne Area Arts Commission & Bittersweet Farms.

About Fallen Timbers Art Festival

Celebrating diverse local art and fine artists from both northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan, Fallen Timbers Art Festival is a free, fun event created to uplift the community.

The juried art show will highlight 38 local artists.

Collect works of fine art! You will have the opportunity to purchase works of art in clay, glass, metal, wood, fiber, sculpture, jewelry, paintings, photography, and more.

Try local wines! You can purchase a wine-tasting ticket to try premium Ohio wines from Majestic Oak Winery & Neon Groundhog, Four Fires Meadery, Funky Turtle Brewing Company, Vine2Wine – Custom Winery of Toledo, and Knotty Vines Farm & Winery.

A wine-tasting ticket includes 10 drink tickets, or you can purchase drink tickets individually. Bottle sales will also be offered.

Food trucks will include delicious treats from Lyle’s Crepes, The Leaf & Seed, The Wandering Bean Coffee Co., and Rider Coffee Co.

There will be a silent auction. All proceeds from the festival benefit the Anthony Wayne Area Arts Commission & Bittersweet Farms.

The opening hours for each day are 11am to 5pm.

About the Black Swamp Arts Festival

There are over 100 art booths with some artists selling their art, and they are all entered into the Juried Art Show, a quality-focused fine arts and craft show, and the Wood County Invitational Art Show.

Youth Arts is an area where there are activities for kids to participate in, open Saturday and Sunday 11 am – 5 pm.

There will be a professional chalk artist from 9 am to 11 am on Saturday, and the annual Chalk Walk mural creation for the youngsters to participate in to win money for their school.

Other attractions include A beer garden with an Art of Beer Tasting event.

Live music includes artists Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country, Cris Jacobs, Amy Helm, and The Sensational Barnes Brothers, just to name a few. Music is a huge part of this festival, so there will be a lot of it!

About Mason Ohio

Mason, Ohio is well known as a place that is home to one of the world’s largest Tennis Stadiums, The Lindner Family Tennis Center, and Kings Island Amusement Park. Of course, there are many other things that Mason is also known for.

The Lindner Family Tennis Center welcomes guests to visit their Center Court and Grandstand Court. You are also welcome to take photos and videos of the area. Fun for all ages, enjoy a bit of friendly competition!

The Cincinnati Masters tournament has been taking place here since 1899. It is the second most important annual tennis tournament in the US after the US Open.

Pine Hill Lakes Park

Cottell Park

Great Wolf Lodge Water Park

The Great Wolf Lodge Water Park in Mason is a fantastic place to visit if you like fun and games. Some of the activities include a build-a-bear, a water park, and mini golf. There are a variety of dining and snack options available at this resort.

Kings Island

Kings Island is a huge amusement park that has been attracting visitors and fans for many years. The park boasts over a dozen rollercoasters and a massive water park as well. As you can imagine, this is a popular attraction, and tickets should be bought in advance.

Sonder Brewing

This is a large building that has a 30-barrel house and a large taproom as well. They have been brewing beer here for over 40 years, and they have a large selection of beers available. The taproom is a jewel in the crown when visiting this establishment, and they also allow dogs to visit.

Some of the available items include merchandise and packaged beers. Food is served here as well, and you can also enjoy various drinks like cocktails, beers, wine, and spirits!

Corwin M. Nixon Park

This is a fantastic park to visit at any time of the year, but it does come into its own in the summer months. Facilities include a public swimming pool, picnic shelter, charcoal grills, a dog fountain, disability-friendly walks, and softball fields. This is a wonderful place to visit and relax or do some sporting activities.

Painting With A Twist

Painting With A Twist began after Hurricane Katrina destroyed New Orleans. The idea behind this venture is for people to get together and have fun. The idea has grown since it began in the aftermath of the hurricane, and it has been a huge success. So, if you fancy painting and want to meet new people, then this is a great place to visit, as the emphasis is on fun, fun, fun!

Schappacher Park Dog Run

The Schappacher Park Dog Run is a large park that is designed for dogs and their humans. There are some lovely shady areas and a stream as well. It should be noted that reservations are not available here, and all services on offer are on a ‘first-come, first-served’ basis. The shelters can also be unavailable at times due to events and refurbishment, so do call ahead and check their availability. So, if you want to have some time with your dog, then this is the place to visit.

Fleckenstein Park

Fleckenstein Park is a 50-acre park with facilities available like soccer fields, picnic areas, baseball diamonds, and restrooms. Shelters are available on a ‘first-come, first-served’ basis. There are also two fenced baseball fields with dugouts. The pond in the park also offers fishing but an Ohio fishing permit is required.

About Lima Ohio

Lima is the county seat of Allen County in Northwest Ohio. The Joint Systems Manufacturing Center (Lima Army Tank Plant) is the sole manufacturer of the M1 Abrams tank.

Lima was named after Peru’s capital city Lima. The Ottawa River flows through the city, and Lima has a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons.

Fun Fact: Edna de Lima was an international operatic singer from Lima Ohio. Her real name was Edna Burton, and after marriage, Edna Van Dyke. The precise dates of both her birth and death are unknown, but she was born around 1875 and died in either 1959 or 1960.

McLean Teddy Bear Park

Teddy Bear Park is a 134-acre park with three ponds and 3.5 miles of hiking trails. Activities and facilities available here include fishing (no license required), a large picnic area, two reservable shelters, a sand volleyball court, play equipment, and more.

The park is named as such because Mr. McLean would provide children in the surrounding hospitals with a teddy bear each, to help comfort them during their stay.

Lauer Historical Farm

Lauer Farm has a history dating back to the mid-1830s. Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District acquired the farm in 2006. There has been extensive work carried out to make this a historical working farm. On a visit to the farm, you can learn about past agricultural techniques, and how they are still used today.

This location is also offered as an event venue. Reservable facilities include the Historic Home, Bank Barn, Celebration Garden Venue, and the Wedding Pergola.

Hidden Creek Golf Club

Hidden Creek Golf Club has an 18-hold golf course available for guests and members. There is also a driving range and practice areas.

Nine18 is a snack and beverage bar selling freshly made sandwiches, weekly specials, and appetizers. Beer, wine, soft drinks, and mixed drinks are available.

Outdoor Pavilion and Charcoal Grill has a large charcoal grill as well as a full-service kitchen. The dinners here are served buffet-style.

Alter Ego Comics

Alter Ego Comics caters to people who like comic books, TV series, and Movies from the past and present. There are posters, games action figures, and various toys for sale. The shop has a huge collection of comics and items from some of the biggest studios such as WB and DC Comics.

Artspace-Lima is the perfect place to visit if you love art. There are many art galleries and some of the exhibits here are from some of the biggest names in the art world.

Allen County Historical Society & Museum

The Allen County Historical Society & Museum is one of the most visited attractions in Lima Ohio. Allen County Historical Society & Museum is a fantastic place to visit if you would like to know more about the area. MacDonell House is an old Victorian House and it has been cared for and kept in its original style since those days. 

A lot of time and effort has been put into this house and there are some very interesting artifacts on show as well. The house itself can take a whole day to look around and admire. This is a very busy attraction so check opening times in advance of your visit.

Lincoln Park Railway Exhibit

At the Lincoln Park Railway Exhibit, there are steam engines, carriages cabooses, and other artifacts on show. Some of the steam carriages are still in use today. Guests are welcome to picnic in the area and it is a great attraction to visit in the summer months.

Schoonover Park

This is one of the quietest attractions in Lima Ohio. There is a large lake here that contains various freshwater fish. Some of the fish in this lake are not native to Ohio, but still call this lake their home. There is also a swimming pool available. 

This park is open all year round, so you can enjoy the park after one of Ohio’s legendary snowstorms, or admire the various plants and trees in the spring and fall as well. In the summer months, when the trees are in bloom you can sit and enjoy a picnic.

Ottawa Metro Park

Ottawa Metro Park is a 287-acre park with fishing and boating available on the 89-acre Lima Lake reservoir, and swimming at the 450-foot-long Ottawa Metro Park Beach. There is an 18-hole Frisbee golf course, a sand volleyball court, and an outdoor amphitheater. Three reservable shelters with electricity are available.

About Springfield Ohio

Mother Stewart’s Brewing

Mother Stewart’s Brewing is based in downtown Springfield. This is a family-run establishment and it has a large brewery taproom.

Mad River Gorge and Nature Preserve

The Heritage Center of Clark County

Young’s Jersey Dairy Farm

Young’s Jersey Dairy Farm is one of the best places you can find for an amazing day out near Springfield! There is a nice petting zoo with goats, sheep, and cows. Clark County Fairgrounds

The Clark County Fairgrounds is a must-visit and the ideal place to finish off a break or vacation in this area.

Pennsylvania House Museum

The Pennsylvania House dates back to 1839 and in time it was modernized to host a museum. Back in the day, it was a Tavern for weary travelers heading out West. When the American Civil War was concluded, it was used as a Doctor’s clinic and boarding house. The Pennsylvania House Museum was refurbished with 24 rooms and an extensive collection of antiques.

The house is home to vintage dolls and old-style furnishings. The Museum has played such an important role in the local area that it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

Tony Packo’s Cafe was made famous by the hit TV show M*A*S*H. It was mentioned a number of times by Corporal Maxwell Klinger, played by Jamie Farr, who is from Toledo.

Toledo Lighthouse Tours

The Toledo Lighthouse is a wonderful piece of architecture that has attracted visitors for years. A visit to this lighthouse cannot be done by land though, so visitors must take the boat.

The boat tours to the lighthouse start at the Toledo Harbor Lighthouse Preservation Society on the marina at Maumee Bay State Park. Visitors can go inside the lighthouse; however, a level of fitness is required as visitors need to climb up a rung ladder and then take 76 steps to get to the top of the lighthouse.

Of course, visitors are not obliged to do this and may simply choose to stay outside and admire the location. The lighthouse is over 200 years old and has played an important role in keeping shipping safe.

National Museum Of The Great Lakes

The Great Lakes are the cornerstone of this entire region of not just Ohio, but all of the Northern United States. Renaissance Theatre

The Renaissance Theatre in Mansfield is owned and run by the Renaissance Performing Arts Association and provides programming in education, theatre, and music.

This theater seats 1,400 and is a beautiful step back in time. The restoration has been carried out very sympathetically, and it is probably little changed from its initial opening in 1928.

BibleWalk

BibleWalk is Ohio’s only wax museum, featuring more than 300 wax figures in 100 life-size scenes. There are seven interactive tours available. Visitors can press buttons triggering sound effects and dialogue.

This museum was built entirely by the congregants of the adjacent Diamond Hill Cathedral.

The tours have a small charge. Exhibits are free and open to the public. Group rates are available, and an after-hours BibleWalk Glow for groups can be booked in advance.

Mansfield Memorial Museum

The Mansfield Memorial Museum, formerly the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall, was founded in 1889 by Edward Wilkinson, a collector for the Smithsonian Institute, Carnegie Natural History Museum, and Peabody Field Museum.

Collections at the Mansfield Memorial Museum include major wars, natural history, public documents from Richland County and the City of Mansfield, and the industrial history of Mansfield.

Westinghouse was a manufacturer of appliances between 1918 and 1990. At its height, it employed more than 8,000 people. There is a collection of over 250 small Westinghouse appliances, including the ‘singing dryer’ and the first working robot, ‘Elektro’.

Oak Hill Cottage Museum

Oak Hill Cottage is a mid-nineteenth-century house in the Gothic revival style. Built by John Riley Robinson in 1847.

Dr. Johannes Jones purchased Oak Hill Cottage in 1864 and his family lived there until 1965 when the Richland County Historical Society purchased it and opened it as a house museum.

The house has been restored and preserved, and all the Victorian furnishings and artifacts in the house belonged to the Jones family.

Tours of the house are available and last approximately one hour and a gift shop is in the basement of the building.

The Mansfield Playhouse

The Mansfield Playhouse is the second oldest continuously-producing theater in the state of Ohio.

The Mansfield Fire Museum

The Mansfield Fire Museum is a reproduction of an early 20th-century Fire Station. There is an antique alarm bell that alerted the firemen, horse stables, pictures, and displays of firefighting equipment from the past.

Buckeye Imagination Museum

The Buckeye Imagination Museum is an immersive children’s museum with over 40 interactive exhibits. The exhibits will enthrall children and also help parents and caregivers to see the world through the eyes of a child.

Ohio Bird Sanctuary

Ohio Bird Sanctuary is a private non-profit organization that was originally called the Richland County Raptor Center. It was founded in 1988 and the birds were housed in a barn.

Today the Sanctuary is a haven for native birds, a nature preserve, as well as a living museum. There are four miles of trails through 90 acres of meadow and forest, a treehouse classroom, a Songbird Aviary, and live bird displays.

Richland Carrousel Park

Richland Carrousel Park was built in 1990 and is the first new hand-carved carousel to be built in the US since the 1930s.

The carousel features 30 horses and 22 menagerie figures, as well as chariots. Guarding the entrance are two bronze horses which were put in place in 2003.

Richland Carrousel Park is wheelchair accessible. The horse in front of each of the chariots swivel, and the chariot seat flips up to accommodate a wheelchair.

Battle Zone Paintball Park

This park is a safe, friendly, and fun-filled environment that provides a good time for everyone! B&O Bike Trail

The B&O Bike Trail follows the route of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad line, Indianapolis to Springfield, Illinois. It is still a work in progress.

This bike trail in Richland County spans 18.4 miles, connecting four communities. Along this trail, you will go across 18 bridges, past open fields, and through Kingswood Center Gardens.

Take as long as you like on this trail, there are plenty of places to stop and visit. You will travel through Butler, Belville, Lexington, and Mansfield.

Note: the Bellville, Butler, and Lexington libraries offer a variety of bikes for you to ride with a valid MRCPL library card.

Nature Parks and Preserves in Mansfield

There are a lot of places to enjoy nature in Mansfield. Ohio in general has a lot of nature locations, and Mansfield is no exception!

Kingwood Center Gardens

At Kingwood Center Gardens, Kingwood Hall has five levels, including a basement, three living levels, and a full attic. The Hall is open for scheduled guided tours.

The Gardens contain The Allee, with beautiful seasonal displays; The Display Greenhouse, individual houses with tropicals, succulents, bromeliads, and seasonal arrangements; The Perennial Garden, Mr King’s Formal Gardens, Terrace Garden, Woodland Garden, and Herb, Rose, as well as Trial Gardens where the gardeners trial new plants.

There is also the Courtyard Complex, the Duck Pond, the Nature Pond, Peacock Playhouse: The Kingwood Sensory Center, and the Storybook Trail.

There is an interactive Garden map, and a downloadable Garden map available.

Malabar Farm State Park

Malabar Farm State Park is nearly 1,000 acres and is located in the rolling foothills of Ohio. It was the home of Pulitzer Prize-winning author and conservationist Louis Bromfield.

At Malabar Farm you can have a wagon tour, house tour, cabin rental, and primitive camping is also available. 

There are four trails at Malabar Farm State Park:

Gorman Nature Center

Gorman Nature Center is owned and managed by the Richland County Park District. It features 150 acres of forest, prairies, ponds, and streams.

There are over five miles of trails as well as weekly programs for the public featuring hikes, field trips, and natural history programs.

In the winter cross country skiing is available.

Fowler Woods State Nature Preserve

This nature preserve is one of the best places in Ohio to see wildflowers in spring, as well as many nesting birds, such as Redstart, Red-Headed Woodpecker, and Ovenbird.

Fowler Woods covers an area of 187 acres and is the only state nature preserve in Richland County.

Charles Mill Lake Park

Charles Mill Lake Park is on 2,000 acres spread across Richland and Ashland Counties. Features of this park are the Charles Mill Dam which was constructed in 1935-36 on the Black Fork Creek for flood control; Charles Mill Lake covers an area of 1,350 acres and provides fishing, sailing, and boating opportunities.

There are two campgrounds with a total of 457 campsites, all of which have a picnic table as well as a fire ring. Some campsites have a 30-amp electrical service.

Three patio cabins are available, they do not have running water or restrooms, however, facilities are nearby.
