Great Lakes Science Center

Great Lakes Science Center is the perfect place to visit, as loads of hands-on exhibits keep the kids entertained for hours. This is the perfect place for kids of all ages, and an example of this is the special youth exhibits. These exhibits are designed for children under the age of 7.

The NASA Glenn Visitor Center is the highlight of the trip to this amazing place, as well as the numerous exhibits. All visitors are invited to see science demonstrations and even a show in their high Dome Theater.

The science center also has a very long list of events, programs, and camps that are on offer throughout the year. If one of your kids is a big science buff, they can even have their birthday and other celebratory parties here.

Majestic Meadows Alpacas

Majestic Meadows Alpacas is a nice petting zoo that has over 20 acres of land. The animals here are super friendly, and some of the breeds that live here include tortoises, camels, goats, sheep, llamas, donkeys, potbellied pigs, and horses.

This petting zoo also holds events throughout the year, so do check their website if you would like to take the kids to an event. There is also a family-owned boutique that sells various items.

Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens

Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens in Columbus has over 88 acres of gardens and various activities.

You and your family will be able to see the conservatory in a group or, if you prefer, on your own. In the conservatory, there are over 400 species of greenhouse plants. Some of these plants are tropical and are from all around the globe.

There is also an art exhibition and a garden for children that has lots of activities going on. There is also a daily glass-blowing demonstration that shows how molten glass can be turned into art.

Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens also have a cafe on-site where you can grab some food and drinks. The botanical gift shop is also a great place to visit, and there are garden items and plants available for purchase.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is the perfect place to visit if you like good music and playing instruments. The best artists in Rock and Roll are honored in this impressive building. This museum is perfect for teens and older children, as it is not just a museum where you walk around. Visitors will be able to pick up a guitar or have a play on the drums.

The Garage also lets your family play as a group, and there are video prompts that help guide you through. There is also a lounge area that is perfect for relaxing with a guitar, and there is also a coffee area. Lakewood Park & Playground

Lakewood Park has over 31 acres of activities for the entire family. This is a lovely setting and has attracted people for years.

This great park has a large playground, and it is suitable for kids of all ages. Some of the play areas are in sections, and there is even a skywalk. As well as the play areas, the kids will also be able to play soccer, tennis, and baseball, and they can bring their skateboards and try out the skate park.

The walkways in this park are well cared for, so families are also able to have a stroll around the park. Free performances and concerts take place here in the summer months, and there is also a large public swimming pool.

Olentangy Indian Caverns

Olentangy Indian Caverns is the perfect place to visit if you would like to see underground caverns, enjoy mini golf, and visit a petting zoo.

The Olentangy Caverns were formed by an underground river over thousands of years. The Olentangy Caverns have large underground rooms and a winding trail. There is a museum where the family can look at artifacts, and you will all be able to learn about the history of the caverns. Some of the artifacts on show were left by the Wyandot Indians. The caverns have three levels, and there is an audio tour lasting about 30 minutes.

With an all-access pass, visitors can play a round of mini golf. Visitors can also enjoy a picnic in this area, and there is a playground for the kids and a large firetruck slide. If you fancy a walk, there is also a trail that is around a mile long.

Columbus Zoo and Aquarium

There are over 10,000 animals from all over the world that call Columbus Zoo their home. This zoo is the most popular zoo in the central Ohio area. A visit to this zoo is an all-day experience, so it is best to pack your lunch and wear some comfortable shoes or sneakers.

This zoo is open all year round and it hosts some special events and some unique experiences as well. There is also a chance to get up close and personal with some of the residents of the zoo. Special prices are available for some events, so do check out the website.

COSI — Center of Science and Industry

COSI is the perfect place to visit with the family, as there are lots of things to do, including over 300 exhibits that will keep the kids entertained for hours.

This is an ideal place to visit, whether you have toddlers or teens. The science center offers fun for all ages, and it has a Planetarium that has several shows at different times of the day. There is also a kid space for the youngest members of the family and a Dinosaur Gallery that has a T-Rex model.

The museum also has exhibits on show at different times of the year, and it hosts different events as well. Visitors are advised to have a look at their website to see what deals are on offer.

Fossil Park

Fossil Park in Sylvania offers families something a little different. It is only one of two geological parks in the world with fossils that date back over 365 million years.

There are also over five acres of quarry that visitors can explore, and it is made of shale sand, so it is easy to use your hands in the hunt for fossils. If you are lucky enough to find a fossil, you will need to use a brush to clean it up. There is also an area to enjoy a picnic and a playground for the kids. Admission to the Fossil Park is free of charge.

Cedar Point Amusement Park

Cedar Point Amusement Park is arguably the best amusement park in the United States. This park boasts a whopping 18 roller coasters, a huge water park, a private beach at Lake Erie, a campground, and an on-site hotel. This amusement park is known around the world for its fabulous attractions.

Whether your family wants to stay for a day or a week, boredom is never going to be an issue here. As well as the rides and attractions, there are also lots of food options.  If you also fancy quieter times, you can go out to Cedar Point Beach. You can play volleyball, build a sandcastle, parasail, or rent out a jet ski.

Sweeties Golfland Park

If you and your kids enjoy a round of mini golf, then this is the place to visit. There are two 18-hole courses. One is for beginners, and the other one is a bit more advanced. Putting on both courses can be a challenge and it is a great way to enjoy a summer’s day.

After a round or two of golf, visitors can go to the Sweeties Candy store, the largest candy store in North America. There are lots of sweets on offer, and if you like ice cream, there are different types of ice cream available.

Alien Vacation Mini Golf

Alien Vacation Mini Golf is located in Medina, and it is an amazing glow-in-the-dark golf course. There is an interactive area that offers a 3D experience that is suitable for all ages. There are 12 holes to play, and each one is different. Some examples of this are the outer space hole, the sea hole, and the carnival hole. There is also a place to relax in the middle of the course where you and your family can purchase items like slushies and donuts.

Children’s Museum Cleveland

The Children´s Museum of Cleveland is the perfect place to spend time with your kids. This museum has been designed for younger kids from the ages of a month through to the age of 8. The museum is unique as it offers different themes in different areas.

Some of the exhibits include a mini city, a farm, a doctor’s office, a shop, and a rooftop garden. There is a large 2-story play place that the kids will love to have a go at. The Wonder Science lab also teaches visitors how water works.

There is also a children’s art studio, where hands-on play is encouraged. It is also important to point out that there is an ADA-accessible room that is ideal for kids who have sensory issues and autism.

National Museum of the US Air Force

The National Museum of the US Air Force is based in the Dayton area of Ohio. This is a large museum that has four hangars with over 150 planes and aircraft-related articles. If you and your family are aviation fans, then this is an ideal place to visit.

Celebrate the end of a Cruel Summer at this Taylor Swift Fever Dream Formal dance on September 15, 2023. Grab your best dress and join fellow Columbus Swifties for an evening of Taylor Swift music and dancing.

Buffet-style snacks, dessert, and drinks will be provided with the price of admission. This is an alcohol-free event and is open to all ages.

Admission is $30 which covers entry into the event, snacks, and Taylor-themed party favors to take home. 

While there is no specific dress code for the event, everyone is encouraged to dress up to whatever degree they would like. Prom dresses, Era’s Tour outfits, casual dresses, and button-ups of all kinds are all welcome. 

This event is not an official Taylor Swift event and is not for profit. It is run for fans and by fans and all proceeds will be used to make it the best event possible.

About the Columbus Oktoberfest

As you may expect, the Columbus Oktoberfest hosts a lot of events with German names – don’t worry, they are in English too! These events include Steinstossen (Stone Throw), Keg Toss, and Steinheben (Bavarian Stone Lift).

The Craft Bier Garten features Ohio’s craft breweries and the Wine Garten offers an expanded selection of wines.

For the kids, there is also fun arts and crafts, inflatables, and face painting among many other activities.

Sunday is the Kidslinked Oktoberfest from 10am to 5pm. It is a fun-filled day for the whole family and includes Princesses and Super Heroes Breakfast, Bubble Run, and Royal and Super Parade. Contests include hula hoop, limbo, giant Jenga, and water balloon toss.

There is the Art & Craft Marktplatz with artisan vendors selling a wide selection of handmade creations, and the Merchant Market which is specifically for small business and service vendors.

A variety of food and drink is available from various vendors. Please note – all food and beverages will be sold cashless so you will need to have a card with you, or you can purchase an on-site-use Fest Card.

Although this Oktoberfest officially opens on Friday, there is a ‘Kick-Off Party’ on Thursday, September 7 from 5pm to 10pm.

About Highbanks Metro Park

Highbanks Metro Park is the most visited Metro Park in the Columbus and Franklin County Metro Parks system, attracting around one million visitors annually.

It is named for its 100-foot-high shale bluff that towers over the Olentangy State Scenic River. At Highbanks, you will find ravines, meadows, dense forests, and Indian burial mounds. The trails will take you to the top of the bluff, where you are treated to the most amazing views.

The bluffs at Highbanks are made up of limestone, Ohio black shale as well as Olentangy shale. The observation deck on top of the high bluff was used by natives to keep lookout.

Highbanks Metro Park contains a nature center, a sledding hill, a natural play area as well as the Edward F Hutchins State Nature Preserve.

Two of the earthworks – Highbanks Metropolitan Park Mounds I and II – and the Highbank Park Works are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Edward F. Hutchins Nature Preserve

This nature preserve within Highbanks Metro Park covers an area of 206 acres. It is situated on the 100-foot-high bluffs, overlooking the Olentangy State Scenic River. The woodland areas contain a mixture of older and younger trees, predominantly oak, maple, and hickory.

This preserve also offers plant lovers a huge variety, with 45 trees, 22 shrubs, and 144 herbaceous species. One of the Highbanks Metro Park’s Indian mounds is to be found here.

Natural Features in Highbanks Metro Park

Highbanks is home to a pair of Bald Eagles that have hatched eaglets since 2010. There are also two large sycamores, reportedly 500 years old, and with a circumference of 23-24 feet.

The deep ravines in Highbanks Metro Parks are thought to be 10,000 years old and have been carved by glacial meltwater.

Concretions

Concretions are one of the unique geological features at Highbanks Metro Park, they are formed by mineral cement in spaces between rocks or soil. They are usually spherical and sometimes have a fossil inside.

Basically, there has to be something inside them. This could be a leaf, a tooth, a piece of shell, etc. Whatever is inside a concretion is what encourages the concretion to form around it.

In the 1980s, an eroding concretion in Highbanks Metro Park split in half. Inside was the jawbone of a Dinichthys – a prehistoric fish. This discovery is on display at the nature center.

Wading and Paddling in the Water

When you visit Highbanks Metro Park, be sure to take your rainboots, as there are opportunities to walk or go creeking in the water. If you are near loose shale stones, you can skim them across the water – this is great fun for kids and adults alike!

Trails

There are nine trails at Highbanks Metro Park, ranging from easy to moderate/difficult. Pets and bikes are welcome on some trails, and a couple of the trails are also wheelchair and stroller-friendly.

Big Meadows Path

• 1 mile | Easy | Hike | Bike | Pets | Paved

This is an easy loop trail that is just over a mile long. It goes through meadows and playfields. Pets and bikes are both welcome on this trail. Expect this walk to take around 30 minutes.

Dripping Rock Trail

• 2½ miles | Moderate to Difficult | Hike | Gravel

The Dripping Rock trail is a loop trail that goes through a forest and passes steep ravines. Along the trail, there are two further loops that you can take – if you do, your hike will be 3.8 miles long. Pets and bikes are not permitted on this trail. You can expect your walk to take nearly two hours if you include the two extra loops.

Multi-Use Trail

• 1¼ miles | Easy | Hike | Bike | Pets | Paved

This is an easy one-way trail that is a little more than a mile long and goes through woods and fields. Pets and bikes are welcome on this trail. Expect this hike to take around 40 minutes.

Overlook Trail

• 2¼ miles | Moderate to Difficult | Hike | Gravel

The Overlook Trail is an out-and-back trail that is 2¼ miles long and goes through the Edward F. Hutchins Nature Preserve and to the observation deck on the 100-foot bluff. Pets and bikes are not permitted on this trail. You can expect this hike to take around one hour.

Sycamore Trail

• 1 mile | Easy | Hike | Jog | Gravel

This is a loop trail that starts from the parking lot at the River Bluff area and winds through a forest of sycamore, buckeye, and cottonwood. There is a stretch of this trail that runs alongside the river. This trail is also wheelchair and stroller-friendly.

Coyote Run

• 3½ miles | Moderate | Hike | Pets | Cross-Country Ski | Grass and Dirt

The Coyote Run is an out-and-back trail that is 3½ miles long and goes through woods and fields. The start point is at the Nature Center. The trail has two main loops and one small loop. Pets are welcome on this trail, but please note that the Coyote Run trail is in use for cross-country skiing in the winter months when conditions are suitable. This hike will take around 1 hour and 45 minutes.

Oak Coves Path

• ½ mile | Easy | Hike | Bike | Pets | Paved

An easy, short hike, this trail passes through meadows and playing fields. Pets and bikes are welcome on this trail. You can expect this hike to take around 15 minutes.

Scenic River Trail

• ½ mile | Easy | Hike | Pets | Gravel

As the name suggests, this short trail runs alongside the river and through some forest. Dogs are welcome, and this trail is also wheelchair and stroller-friendly.

Wetland Spur Trail

• ½ mile | Easy to Moderate | Hike | Grass and Dirt

The Wetland Spur trail is a one-way trail that is just short of half a mile long, and it goes through woodland to a wetland with an observation deck. This walk will take around 15 minutes.

There are both reservable and non-reservable shelters available:

Reservable Shelters

There are three reservable shelters here:

• Mansion holds 100 people and has one grill with an outdoor kitchenette. There is a sink, electricity, a stone fireplace, a drinking fountain, an outdoor firepit and there is also a play area.
• Northern holds 120 people and has two grills, electricity, a stone fireplace, as well as a wood-burning stove. There is a sink as well as a small counter, an outdoor fire pit, and a brick patio. Playground equipment, large playfield, volleyball posts, and net.
• Nature Center Multipurpose Room is a meeting room with a maximum capacity of 99. ADA accessible.

Non-Reservable Shelters

Two areas of the park contain 11 non-reservable shelters.

• Oak Coves Picnic Area has picnic tables, grills, large playfields, and playground equipment. There are two shelters, each seating 64 people. ADA accessible.
• Big Meadows Picnic Area offers seven small shelters seating 16 each and two open shelters seating 64 each. They have grills, large playfields, and playground equipment, and are ADA-accessible.

Nuclear Rush Coaster

Nuclear Rush roller coaster speeds forward while the cart spins! Coaster carts seat two riders at a time.

Drop Tower

A drop of 35 feet awaits anyone wanting to take up this ride! The Drop Tower seats up to 12 guests per ride.

Blacklight Mini-Golf

There are two 9-hole glow-in-the-dark miniature golf courses. You have to putt your way over, through, and around obstacles to reach the hole. You can play these two golf courses individually or combine them to make an 18-hole course.

Columbus InflataPark

A great fun attraction for the kids. Children must be under 12 years old to play on the inflatables and must be at least 42 inches tall. There is a toddler-specific soft play area in this zone for the youngest children.

Homerun Zone Batting Cage Simulator

The most realistic baseball gameplay in a batting cage! This game simulates every aspect of a real defense to hit against. Stepping to the plate activates a foot pedal, and a pitcher will be projected on the screen, entering their windup and delivering a real baseball that comes out of the screen. You will encounter fastballs, breaking balls, and change-ups.

Toxic Meltdown

An inflatable, moving Ninja Warrior course, where the kids have to try to remain standing for the full length of the ride.

The Vault & Gold Mine Laser Maze

This challenge is for true ninjas! You have to make your way through a maze of laser beams by crawling, bending, and jumping to avoid breaking the beams.

Columbus Brewing Company

The Columbus Brewing Company kicked off the start of the Brewery scene in Columbus. It was the first brewery to open its doors in the city with its large range of craft beers and other beverages.

This brewery opened in 1988 when the craft ale scene was very much in its infancy.

Of course, times have changed and as the years have passed, a lot of money has been invested back into the brewery. The brewery now offers a large range of Indian Pale Ales (IPA) in both the North American and European styles.

Hoof Hearted

Hoof Hearted is in the Italian Village in Marengo and it has been open since 2016. The opening was a great success and because all the beers they brew are of premium quality, this is what attracts people back.

The other thing that is great about this brewery is that it has a different attitude to some of the bigger breweries. The atmosphere and ambiance in this brewery are very relaxed and they also serve some terrific food. So if you are after some great food and homemade ales to wash it down with, then this is the place to visit.

Wolf’s Ridge Brewing Company

Wolf’s Ridge is a family-owned brewery that opened in 2013. This brewery has won various awards for its craft beers and ales. This brewery puts just as much time and effort into the food that it offers patrons. Known for being a great place to have an intimate meal for two, which is not something normally associated with a brewery. The ales brewed here are in the Northern American and European style.

BrewDog USA

The origins of BrewDog are in the UK. BrewDog is known for its huge range of craft beers and ales. Some of the beers that are brewed at this huge brewery include wheat ales, malt ales, IPA, and stout beer that is similar to Guinness. BrewDog has brought the European Beer market to Columbus and it is very popular.

Most of the beers brewed by BrewDog are brewed in the European style. So for example, the French style is wheat beer. The Dutch style is pilsner, Belgian style is fruit beer and the Spanish style is quite malty and bitter.

The brewery also offers food and there is even a hotel and beer museum on-site. Not only can you make a day of it here, you can even stay over for a night or two.

Elevator Brewery and Draught Haus

This style of brewery is slightly different from the other breweries as it is a micro-brewery. This lovely little brewery is located in a historic building in the heart of downtown Columbus.

The building itself was constructed in 1897. Of course, the brewery has not been around that long, but it is well-suited for this building. Elevator Brewery has been open for over 20 years and they offer some lovely beers that are brewed on-site. They also have a great food menu and offer other drinks such as soft drinks, mocktails, and cocktails.

Parsons North Brewing

Parsons North Brewing offers some great mocktails and cocktails, as well as some wonderful craft beers. Some of the ales that are brewed here are in the safety zone and closely resemble ales that you would find in Europe like lagers, bitters, stouts, and IPA.

However, some ales and craft beers also push the boundaries that you are unlikely to find elsewhere for both texture and taste. So whether you want to play it safe or try something out of the box, this is a place that caters to all tastes.

Endeavor Brewing & Spirits

Beer is not the only thing that is offered in this brewery. This place also offers a large range of spirits from around the world, including rum from the Caribbean, vodka from Russia, and whisky and gin from the UK.

Tours are available at the brewing facility situated on Cleveland Avenue in Columbus.

Seventh Son Brewing

Seventh Son has been located in the Italian Village of Columbus for over a decade. This is arguably one of the best breweries that one can find in the city of Columbus. The variety of beer that is on offer here is quite staggering and there is something for everyone.

Some of the offerings include Spanish-style beer, Irish Stout, Scottish Ale, English IPA, and Danish Pilsner. There is something for everyone here and if you have never tried a particular type of beer before and you’re in an adventurous mood, then Seventh Son will have it.

Land-Grant Brewing

The building that Land-Grant Brewing calls home used to build elevators and track systems for newspaper printers. Due to the size of the place, it is a perfect building for a brewery.

This brewery also has a great garden to relax in and they make arguably some of the best beers you can find. They do a tour here on Saturdays and a reservation is not required (it is also free of charge). If you wish to go on a tour then make yourself known at the tap room 15 minutes before the tour begins.

About Blendon Woods

Blendon Woods has seven trails, most of which are easy and quite short hikes. Along the trails you will find beech-maple and oak-hickory forests.

There is the 118-acre Walden Waterfowl Refuge with the 11-acre Thoreau Lake, providing sanctuary for hundreds of birds, ducks, and other wildlife.

When visiting Blendon Woods, you will almost certainly encounter the flock of wild turkeys wandering about looking for food!

Trails at Blendon Woods

There are seven trails at Blendon Woods, one is pet-friendly and one is reserved for cross-country skiing when the weather permits.

Brookside Trail

• 0.8 miles | Easy | Hike | Gravel

This is a one-way trail that passes through woods, crosses Ripple Rock Creek and connects with the Hickory Ridge Trail and Ripple Rock Trail. You can expect this hike to take approximately 25 minutes.

Hickory Ridge Trail

• 0.3 miles | Easy | Hike | Gravel

The Hickory Ridge Trail is an easy, short one-way trail connecting Brookside Trail, Overlook Trail, and Ripple Rock Trail. This hike will take around 10 minutes to complete.

Overlook Trail

• 0.6 miles | Easy | Hike | Gravel

This one-way trail passes through woods, crosses Ripple Rock Creek, and connects with the Hickory Ridge and Ripple Rock trails. You can expect to spend about 20 minutes completing this trail.

Sugarbush Trail

• 1.2 miles | Moderate to Difficult | Hike | Cross-Country Skiing | Grass

The Sugarbush Trail is a one-way trail passing through woods and a meadow where you will see many different species of birds. The trailhead for this trail is about 0.8 miles from the main parking lot, so if you want to hike out and back, your walk will be closer to 2 miles. This hike will take approximately 40 minutes to complete.

Goldenrod Trail

• 1.3 miles | Easy | Hike | Pets | Grass

This trail is an easy multi-loop trail passing through meadows. Dogs are welcome on this trail. You can expect this hike to take around 30 minutes.

Lake Trail

• 0.5 miles | Easy | Hike | Paved

The Lake Trail is an easy one-way hike leading to Thoreau Lake. This trail connects to the Brookside Trail, Hickory Ridge Trail, and Overlook Trail. As this is just a one-way trail, out-and-back is closer to 1 mile. This trail (one way) will take around 15 minutes to complete.

Ripple Rock Trail

• 0.4 miles | Easy | Hike | Gravel

This is a short and easy one-way trail passing through woods and connecting to the Brookside, Hickory Ridge, and Overlook trails. You can expect to spend about 15 minutes completing this trail.

Reservable Shelters

Dogwood

• An open-air shelter with a maximum capacity of 110 (80 under cover) and is ADA-accessible. A charcoal grill, prep table, serving counter, and two electrical outlets. There is lighting, a drinking fountain, restrooms, and a play area – featuring a field, swings, and a horseshoe pit with shoes. All-day and half-day reservations are available.

Hickory Grove

• An open-air shelter with one wall. This shelter has a maximum capacity of 110 (60 under cover) and is ADA-accessible. There is counter space, a serving window, three electrical outlets, and lighting. A charcoal grill and prep table, drinking fountain, flush restrooms, and a wood-burning fireplace are also provided. There is a sand volleyball court and a play area featuring a field, swings, and a horseshoe pit with shoes. There is also The Around 9 disc golf practice game, with discs. All-day reservations only.

Shadblow

• An open-air shelter. Maximum capacity is 50 (40 under cover). Counter space, one double charcoal grill, prep table, two electrical outlets, and lighting. There is also a drinking fountain, restrooms, and a wood-burning fireplace. The play area features a small field, a universal playset, swings, and a horseshoe pit with shoes. All-day and half-day reservations are available.

Sycamore

• An open-air shelter with one wall. The maximum capacity is 130 (80 under cover). A kitchenette, serving counter, electric chest cooler, sink with running water. There is a large double grill, six electrical outlets, a water fountain, and restrooms. The play area features a field, a sand volleyball court, swings, and two horseshoe pits with shoes. All-day and half-day reservations are available

Non-Reservable Shelters

There are 5 shelters that are enclosed on three sides. Each seat approximately 30. Grills included.

Two further open shelters seating approximately 80, also with grills.

Toledo Zoo and Aquarium

The Toledo Zoo and Aquarium is a popular visitor location with some hands-on experiences, like feeding the giraffes. There is a museum and activities such as a train ride and ziplining.

Akron Zoo

Akron Zoo has beautiful gardens for visitors to walk around, containing over 7,200 plants and shrubs. There is also an amphitheater for educational talks and demonstrations.

Lagoon Deer Park

Lagoon Deer Park has a petting zoo where the animals have free range in a large area, so interaction with the animals is encouraged. If you feed the animals, there is a good chance they will follow you around the park!

Fishing without a license is available on the four lagoons in the park. The ponds are stocked with rainbow trout, bullheads, channel cat, white bass, carp, largemouth, rock bass, bluegill, crappies, perch, muskies, and northern pike. There are also weekend night fishing opportunities.

Columbus Zoo and Aquarium

The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is one of the oldest establishments in Ohio. This Zoo is one of the most popular zoos in the entire United States. This is also a huge place that covers over 550 acres of land. There are over 10,000 individual animals that call this zoo their home. The Zookeepers also give talks that guests are encouraged to join.

Columbus Zoo has a Christmas lights show called ‘Wildlights‘, starting late November until early January.

Cleveland Metroparks Zoo

This is a great zoo that offers other activities such as a train, a 4D theater, and a zip line. It covers over 180 acres of land and is based in Cleveland, Ohio.

This zoo is divided into different zones. For example, in the wilderness zone, you will be able to see bears, wolves, reindeer, and other animals that live in the wilderness. In other areas of the zoo, there are animals like big cats and elephants.

Visitors can walk or drive through the Christmas light show, called ‘Winter Wild Lights‘, starting mid-November until the end of December.

Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens

Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens is one of the top wildlife places to visit in the entire United States. There are over 2,000 animals and over 3,000 plants and shrubs that call this home. Ohio’s most famous zoo resident lives here – Fiona the hippo. Born prematurely, the whole world watched her survive against all odds!

The zoo puts a lot of emphasis on exhibits. Some of the exhibits that run in this Zoo include Cat Canyon, Hippo Cove, Penguin Point, and the African Habitat.

The Reptile House has been granted National Historical Landmark status. After seeing the animals in the zoo, you can also take a walk around the grounds, and there are activities for the kids as well, such as the outdoor train ride and the carousel.

The ‘PNC Festival of Lights‘ runs from mid-November to early January at the Cincinnati Zoo.

The Village Buildings

Ohio Village gives you a first-hand view of life in Ohio during the American Civil War and back to the 1890s.  In Ohio Village, you will find several building reproductions such as a period schoolhouse, town hall, telegraphic advertiser, emporium, hotel and tavern, church, bank, blacksmith, barber shop, and more. 

The residents are a huge part of what makes Ohio Village so great. Be sure to chat with town residents, they can provide you with a “first-hand” perspective of what life was like. Who would not want a sneak peek into life back then?

All Hallow’s Eve at Ohio Village

All Hallow’s Eve is probably the most popular annual event held in the village. It is an 1860s-style celebration of Halloween that has taken place here since the mid-1980s.

At this event, you will find fortune-telling, costumed interpretations of beliefs and superstitions related to the Halloween season, and a parade for the dead. Oh and don’t forget the arrival of the Headless Horseman! 

Christmas at Ohio Village

Christmas is also another popular time here. You can experience Dickens of Christmas each December. This usually runs for 4 weekends through the holiday season. 

At this event, you will see live carolers, horse-drawn carriages (with rides available), Victorian Santa Clauses as well as Scrooge, Marley, and the Ghost of Christmas. 

As you wander through Ohio Village, you will also see period seasonal decorations, crafts, and even cooking demonstrations. Pre-registration is required for this event, there is no walk-up admission allowed for this event. Get your tickets in advance by calling 800-686-1541 or you can purchase online.

Ohio Village Muffins

Ohio Village is also home to an enthusiastic group of baseball lovers. This group takes on keeping the tradition of the sport alive as it was played during the mid-nineteenth century. 

The Ohio Village Muffins do everything as the players of 1860 did. They play by those rules, they dress in period uniforms and they are full of gentlemanly behavior. Oh, and they are pretty adamant that baseball is actually two words: base ball. 

The Ohio Village Muffins play games against other vintage teams from Ohio and across the country. They typically play about 40 matches each year. The home field for the Muffins is called Muffins Meadows. Everyone is welcome to come and cheer on all participants during these family-friendly games. 

Ohio Village Diamonds

Just like the men played on the Muffins team, there is a women’s team called the Diamonds. When women of that time period pursued higher education, they also participated in physical education outdoors which was playing base ball. 

It was played in a secluded part of campus. At first, it was not seen as “ladylike” due to the strenuous nature of play, but it soon became popular.

Have you been to Ohio Village? We would love to hear what you think. I have personally been several times. I have enjoyed Halloween with my family and loved it each time. We have visited during Christmas as well as summer. There are lots of events held at Ohio Village, it can be such a fun place to visit.

While you are there, be sure to check out the Ohio Historical Society as well! If you will be in the central Ohio area for a while and the weather is nice, we suggest you check out the Metro parks. We love heading to the metro parks like Glacier Ridge Metro Park, Scioto Grove Metro Park, Three Creeks Metro Park, Rocky Fork Metro Park, Blendon Woods, and more! The metro parks are a great place to explore the nature side of Ohio!
