All state parks in Ohio are maintained by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). They are also all free to enter, with no parking fees. Across the state, parks vary greatly in their landscape, facilities, and activities. The state parks in southwest Ohio offer a diversity of landscapes.

Great Council State Park

This is a different kind of state park from any of the others in Ohio. Featuring a 12,000-square-foot interpretive center modeled after a historic Shawnee longhouse, this center focuses on the Shawnee culture and their way of life.

• Gallery Space: exhibits of artistry and heritage of the region’s cultures.
• Theater Space: watch a short film where modern Shawnee voices illuminate the history of Great Council.

Little Miami State Park

Little Miami State Park is a trail corridor. Visitors can traverse the 50-mile linear park by water from the Little Miami State and Natural Scenic River, or on land via the paved Little Miami Scenic Bikeway.

The trail goes from Terrace Park in Hamilton County to Hedges Road in Greene County. The remainder of the trail to Springfield is also paved and operated by Greene County Parks and Trails.

About Apple Picking in Ohio

The apple picking season is typically from early to mid-September, to early October. The orchards announce their start dates on their website or social media pages. Some of the busier orchards require reservations, so check out their website before you head out.

The majority of orchards have different varieties of apples available to purchase year-round, as well as other fruits and vegetables. Some have bakeries, some have farm market stores with homemade products. These orchards and farms are worth a visit any time of year when they are open, not just for the apple-picking season!

Lynd Fruit Farm

Lynd Fruit Farm in Pataskala is a well-established farm. As well as apples, visitors can pick their own berries, pumpkins, and sunflowers. There are also a lot of activities available for the whole family to enjoy!

The Orchard & Company

Rittman Orchards

Rittman Orchards have apples, peaches, berries, and sunflowers available for picking. There is a bakery that sells a variety of products, they have a ‘Pie of the Month’ with fillings such as caramel apple walnut, strawberry rhubarb, fruits of the forest, and more.

Brant’s Apple Orchard

As well as apple-picking, Brant’s has a bakery and a farm market. There is a picnic area by a pond with fish that apparently love a bite of a donut! The Covered Bridge Playground is fun for the kids. Brant’s hosts many events throughout their open season (August through November), including a fall festival.

Apple Picking in Northwest Ohio

Quarry Hill Orchards

Quarry Hill Orchards in Berlin Heights offer summer and fall you-pick. Apples are usually available from August to late October. Summer fruits that you can pick are cherries, raspberries, and peaches. Quarry Hill hosts many events throughout the year, details of which are available on their website and social media pages. There is an online shop as well as a farm store.

Johnston Fruit Farms

At Johnston Fruit Farms in Swanton, you can pick your own apples and pumpkins in the fall, and strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries in the summer. You can also pick flowers at this farm. There is a free petting zoo, games, and a sandbox for the children. Johnston’s makes cider in six varieties and you can view the cider mill at work. They also make a wide variety of donuts – fresh daily.

Apple Picking in Southeast Ohio

Hidden Hills Orchard

Hidden Hills Orchard in Marietta grows a wide variety of apples. Their six U-pick varieties are Buckeye Gala, Honeycrisp, Golden Delicious, Enterprise, Cameo, and Gold Rush. Hidden Hills produces an award-winning apple cider on-site. The orchard also grows cherries and peaches that are sold locally.

Fuhrmann Orchards

Fuhrmann Orchards offered you-pick apples for the first time in 2024. Early Fuji is the first of five varieties ready for picking in early September. The others are Golden Delicious (mid to late September), RubyRush (late September), Rosalee (early October), and GoldRush (late October to early November).

The Orchards grow 31 varieties of apples, there is an online chart so you can see when each variety is ready to purchase. Check the Facebook page for the you-pick availability.

Fuhrmann’s also have a sunflower field, you-pick pumpkins, as well as a wide variety of fruit and vegetables for sale. There is also an annual Apple Fest in October.

Peifer Orchards

Peifer Orchards in Yellow Springs offer U-pick throughout the summer and fall, with apples and pumpkins in the fall and blackberries, red raspberries, and black raspberries in the summer. Tips for Visiting Lavender Farms

Here are some simple tips for visiting a lavender farm in Ohio:

• Call ahead to see if you need to make a reservation.
• Wear a hat or sunscreen. Lavender is a sun-loving plant.
• Check the forecast. Activities at lavender farms are typically weather-dependent.
• Don’t forget your camera! You will have great photo ops!
• Bring cash with you in case you want to purchase something at the shop. They may only accept cash.
• If cutting is allowed, consider bringing your own clippers, as supplies may be limited. You may also want to bring a bucket of water with you to keep your lavender fresh on the drive home.
• Bees are attracted to lavender but typically will not bother you unless they feel threatened. Consider whether this is a good activity if you have a bee allergy.
• Never visit after hours or when the farm is closed.

Located on the Rockside Winery and Vineyards grounds, the Rockside Lavender Farm offers lavender u-pick times in mid-June.

They also cut, bundle, and dry their lavender. You can purchase it at Rockside Winery and Vineyard as well as Wyandotte Winery. Other lavender products are available too, like essential oil and hydrosol, or lavender water, which is distilled from their lavender crop.

Attend a showcase of premier bluegrass and American roots music at the Greene County Expo Center.

The Industrial Strength Bluegrass Festival is a smoke- and alcohol-free event where you can enjoy nationally recognized acoustic music groups, from a mix of bluegrass, country, and roots to old-time and gospel music—an educational and family-friendly experience. 

Hosted by Joe Mullins & The Radio Ramblers, the festival spans three days, with diverse lineups and featuring festival merchandise, arts and crafts, instruments, and concessions, including a buffet dinner on Friday and Saturday from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

About the Industrial Strength Bluegrass Festival

At Industrial Strength Bluegrass Festival, you will hear nationally recognized acoustic music groups in a smoke- and alcohol-free environment. A combination of bluegrass, country, roots, old-time, and gospel music will be educational and fun for the entire family.

High Fidelity and Michael Cleveland will play on March 21. The lineup for March 22 includes Authentic Unlimited, Donna Ulisse, Darin & Brooke Aldridge, as well as Carson Peters and Iron Mountain.

Jerry Salley, Denison University Bluegrass Band, Po Ramblin’ Boys, Lorraine Jordan & Carolina Road, and Dailey & Vincent will all play on March 23. 

Joe Mullins & The Radio Ramblers will host the festival and play all three days.

Seating is handicap accessible.

There will be an 11,000-square-foot showroom that features festival merchandise like music, t-shirts, and posters. You will also find a variety of arts and crafts, instruments, music accessories, jewelry, and more. 

Concessions are available throughout the entire event. A Fan Feast Charity Breakfast starts at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday. A buffet dinner will be offered on Friday and Saturday from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. 

Doors open at 4 p.m. on Thursday and 10 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.

The Clinton County Corn Festival is an annual three-day event that takes place during the first weekend following Labor Day and is organized by The Antique Power Club of Clinton County.

The festival emphasizes the agricultural heritage of the area.

The Clinton County Corn Festival offers lots of family fun and entertainment, with a variety of activities and events.

The Corn Olympics are the highlight of the festival. Held on Friday night, you can gather a team and enter this fun-filled event. The festival’s website provides information on how to participate.

More than 20 local non-profit food vendors will offer dishes including chicken and noodles, corn on the cob, pork and steak sandwiches, ice cream, and various other delights.

About the Clinton County Corn Festival

With a strong nod to all things agricultural, the Clinton County Corn Festival is a weekend full of fun activities and events.

Activities include:

• Kid Train
• Expo Center
• Quilt Barn
• Craft, Antique, Swap Meet, and Flea Market barns
• Tractors, Engines, and Car shows
• Petting Zoo

Some of the events held here are skillet and rolling pin tosses, cross-cut saw competitions, and live music almost continuously.

If you want to be a bit more involved, you can get a team together and enter the highlight of the Festival – The Corn Olympics on Friday night! This event challenges the teams to construct a themed outhouse, then there is the Outhouse Parade, followed by the Outhouse Race.

The teams then participate in a Log Walk, a Tricycle Race, a Toilet Seat Toss and Hog Call, and a two-part obstacle race.

The website has a lot of information about the Corn Olympics and how to participate.

There will be over 20 local non-profit food vendors on site – chicken and noodles, corn on the cob, pork and steak sandwiches, ice cream, and many other delights!

There is a small charge for admission and a weekend pass is available. Parking is free.
