There is ample parking at the Buttermilk Falls Trailhead, and the scenic overlook is a short walk across Buttermilk Falls Parkway.

The overlook is a wooded deck providing a view of the geology of North Chagrin Reservation.

The water from Buttermilk Creek travels to the Chagrin River, which flows into Lake Erie.

Nearby attractions include the North Chagrin Nature Center, Squire’s Castle, and North Chagrin Oxbow Lagoon.

About Clear Creek Metro Park

Clear Creek Metro Park is a nature preserve and is part of the Columbus and Franklin County Metro Parks system. The 4,729-acre Allen F Beck State Nature Preserve, contained within Clear Creek Metro Park is the largest in Ohio.

In general, the park is extremely rugged and has many steep ravines and cliff faces. There is an overlap of climate zones – the prairies in the west meet the Appalachian forests in the east.

More than 1,200 species of plants have been identified in Clear Creek, and more than 150 species of birds. You should look out for wild turkey, coyote, chipmunks, and maybe even the elusive bobcat!

Some sections of the park are kept closed to the public to preserve rare and endangered species, and although future development will provide more trails, these private sections will remain in place.

This area of Ohio is one of my favorites, year-round, but in the fall it is extremely beautiful.

Trails at Clear Creek Metro Park

There are 12 trails at Clear Creek, ranging from 0.3 miles to 2.5 miles, and categorized as Easy, Easy to Moderate, Moderate, Moderate to Difficult, and Difficult.

As many of these trails intersect each other, you can follow one, or combine two or three to make a longer and/or more varied hike.

Benua Loop Trail

• 1.9-miles | Moderate to Difficult | Hike | Dirt/Gravel

This trail is great for backpacking, birding, and fishing. This hike takes you on wide roads with outstanding scenery and water features, passing Lake Emily. You can expect this trial to take 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete.

Cemetery Ridge Trail

• 2.6-miles | Moderate | Hike | Dirt/Gravel

This trail starts from the Creekside Meadow Trail, crosses Clear Creek Road and then begins a steep climb to the top of the ridge, meeting the Chestnut Trail and finishing when it meets the Fern Trail. The approximate time to complete this trail is 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Chestnut Trail

• 2.2-miles | Difficult | Hike | Dirt/Gravel

A difficult, 2.2-mile one-way trail that passes through valleys, crosses forested ridges, and passes sandstone formations. Expect this trail to take just over an hour to complete.

Fern Trail

• 1.7-miles | Moderate to Difficult | Hike | Dirt

This is a loop trail that goes along a steep ridge and through a forest with a variety of trees and plants. This trail should take around 1 hour to complete.

Creekside Meadows Trail

• 1.7-miles | Easy | Hike | Pets | Grass

This easy one-way 1.7-mile hike follows the banks of Clear Creek through open fields. This trail will take approximately 55 minutes.

Lake Trail

• 0.9-miles | Moderate | Hike | Dirt

This trail does a loop through the woods, leading to an observation deck overlooking Lake Ramona. This hike will take about 35 minutes to complete.

Hemlock Trail

• 1.5-miles | Difficult | Hike | Dirt/Gravel

This is a one-way hike that descends and ascends a steep ravine. It goes through shady hemlock groves and a carpet of ferns. You can expect to complete this trail in around 45 minutes.

Activities at Clear Creek Metro Park

There are not too many activities beyond hiking at Clear Creek Metro Park as this is primarily a nature preserve. Along the trails, you can spot rare wildflowers, a variety of animals, and a host of bird species. Different seasons bring different flowers, animals, and birds to the park.

Fishing

There are access points located along Clear Creek Road, and fishing is available along the 5-acre Lake Ramona and from the dams at Lake Emily. Clear Creek is the only trout stream in southeast Ohio.

Fishing Rules

• There is no minimum length or daily bag limit on bluegill, redear, warmouth, or other sunfish species.
• For rainbow and brown trout and their subspecies, there is no minimum length, but there is a daily bag limit of 5 trout in any combination.
• For white bass, there is a minimum length of 10 inches and a daily bag limit of 25.

Picnicking

Picnic tables and grills are available at the Fern and Creekside Meadows areas. There is a shelter, grills, and restrooms at the Barnebey Hambleton Area.

Leashed dogs and cats are welcome in picnic areas.

Trolls at Aullwood Audubon

The Trolls at Aullwood Audubon in Dayton is an exhibition of three giant trolls and a troll-sized bird nest. The trolls are: Bo (father), Bodil (mother), and Bibbi (daughter). The accompanying story by Thomas Dambo is available online and is in the lobby of the nature center and farm discovery center at Aullwood Audubon.

National Museum of the US Air Force

This is the oldest and largest military aviation museum in the world. It is located at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. It has four huge hangars that host over 150 planes, displays, and missiles. The museum covers the entire history of aviation from the Wright Brothers to the present day.

John Bryan State Park

This park has been called ‘The most scenic park in the Western Ohio area’. This park is over 750 acres and has a stunning natural gorge that has been carved out over thousands of years by the Little Miami River. The scenes are amazing, and they bring visitors back again and again.

Do you like nature and outdoor activities? Five Rivers MetroParks is the place to be, and it has many activities to choose from. Carillon Historical Park

Piatt Castle

There were originally two castles built by brothers and owned by the Piatt family until 2022, when Mac-O-Chee Castle was sold at auction. The new owners are currently converting the castle into luxury accommodation.

Mac-A-Cheek Castle has been around for over 100 years. The castle offers the chance for visitors to learn more about the Piatt family. There are Native American artifacts on show that have an abundance of history attached to them.

Young’s Jersey Dairy

Young’s Jersey Dairy is well known in the Ohio area for all the different types of fun and games on offer. There is a great activities center, golf range, batting cages, mini-golf, barrel ride, and a sack ride.

Dayton Dragons Baseball

Waterfalls In Northeast Ohio

Great Falls of Tinker’s Creek

This is one of the widest waterfalls in Ohio, measuring just over 80 feet wide. This waterfall is located in Viaduct Park. The trail is paved and is suitable for people with walking aids and strollers.

The waterfall is great all year round, but a top tip for you is to visit in the winter when this waterfall freezes over and looks spectacular.

Berea Falls

Berea Falls is a double-tiered cascade on the Rocky River. Above the falls are some historic arched bridges, and below the falls is a narrow gorge. Berea Falls is situated in the Rocky River Reservation.

This waterfall can be enjoyed from a distance, or if visitors prefer, they can follow the short trail down to the waterfall for a closer look.

Chagrin Falls Waterfall

This waterfall is in downtown Chagrin Falls, so no hiking is required! It isn’t just the waterfall that is charming, Chagrin Falls itself is a nice town that has plenty of amenities for visitors.

Paine Falls

Paine Falls is part of the Lake Metroparks, and it is stunning with two tiers and a 30-foot drop. There is a short trail to get to the waterfall. This trail is listed as Difficult, although it is less than ¼ mile long.

East Falls

East Falls is in Cascade Park, and access is stroller and wheelchair-friendly. This is a unique waterfall as the water begins on the Black River and slips its way down a manmade spillway. The water then travels further down to a second drop.

There are actually two waterfalls in this park, West Falls is the other waterfall, and they are both worth a visit. To get to West Falls, you need to take a short drive along the road, but it is worth it.

Day’s Dam Waterfall

This stunning waterfall is on the Black River at Black River Reservation. It is around 10 feet wide and over 40 feet tall. Visitors should follow the Waterfall Loop Trail to see this waterfall.

Brandywine Falls

This is the most popular waterfall in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. In fact, it can be argued that it is one of the most popular waterfalls in the entire state of Ohio. This waterfall is very easy to access, and it has a very impressive 60-foot drop. A tip is to visit this waterfall straight after heavy rain, when you hear the crashing of the water before you see it – great for anticipation!

This waterfall has two observation decks for people to take photographs or simply marvel at Mother Nature. The top deck gives a bird’s-eye view of the waterfall, and it is wheelchair friendly. The lower observation deck does have some steps to take before you reach it.

Buttermilk Falls

This is not a designated trail, and it is not maintained by the national park; however, it is hidden away and is definitely worth a visit. It is an easy path to get to the waterfall, and the walk is around 5 miles. The key is hiking to Blue Hen Falls, and there will be a signpost that says that the trail is finished. Carry on past the signpost and follow the path along the river.

You will have to cross the river a couple of times, but there are plenty of rocks to skip across, and the water is quite shallow. As you go further down the path, you will find the canyon and this gorgeous waterfall.

Waterfall at The Gorge Metro Park

This is a manmade waterfall; in fact, it is actually a dam. However, it is a really nice waterfall that is quite steep, and the water flows through here at a rapid speed. It is very easy to get to as it is a quick hike from the parking lot. The view you get from the waterfall is really nice, and longer trails are available in this area as well.

Lanterman’s Falls

This is a great waterfall to visit, as you can combine a visit to the waterfall with a visit to the mill as well. The mill is open from May through October, but please phone ahead to check the opening times. The waterfall is located right next to Lanterman’s Mill in Mill Creek MetroParks and is arguably one of the best waterfalls to photograph and paint in the area.

Waterfalls In Central Ohio

Hayden Run Falls

This waterfall is located in the Griggs Nature Reserve in Dublin. Dublin is a suburb of Columbus, so this is quite an easy place to visit by car. This waterfall is accessible to people of all skill and mobility levels, as it is just a short walk from the parking lot.

The observation platform is an easy walk; however, anyone with limited mobility may find it difficult to get to the waterfall because there are steps. This is a lovely waterfall and is well worth a visit if you’re in the area.

Rock Mill Waterfall

Rock Mill Waterfall is on the Hocking River near Rock Mill, which is more than two centuries old and has been restored. Although not large, the waterfall flows into a scenic gorge. Above the waterfall is the Rock Mill Covered Bridge. This waterfall is in Rock Mill Park in Lancaster.

Indian Run Falls

This is a beautiful hidden gem in Dublin. The site features a gorgeous stream, cascades, and a waterfall.

What makes Indian Run Falls so special is the pristine waterfalls and streams. The area used to be home to the Wyandot Tribe. The city of Dublin provided access to the area by adding trails, observation decks, a shelter house, and a walking bridge.

Waterfalls In Southeast Ohio

Ash Cave

The waterfall at Ash Cave is best in the spring after the snow of winter melts away. In fact, the best time to visit is around March and April, as this is when the waterfall is at its best. In the wintertime, when the temperatures are sub-zero, the waterfall will freeze over and turn into a large chunk of ice. This waterfall is one of the nicest in Hocking Hills, and it falls at a height of around 90 feet. The cave itself is stunning, and the waterfall really does complement it well.

Cedar Falls

This waterfall is in the stunning Hocking Hills State Park. This is the top waterfall in the park, and it is the most photographed waterfall in Ohio. It is over 50 feet tall and is the largest waterfall in Hocking Hills. The hike to the waterfall is breathtaking.

Hikers walk through a stunning forest with an array of flowers and animals that call it home. There are also the remains of an old mill that stood above the falls in the 1830s.

Conkles Hollow Waterfall

Conkles Hollow is a must-visit when you are in the Hocking Hills area. This is one of our favorite places in that area. There are two trails at Conkles Hollow. There is the rim trail and the lower trail.

As you make your way to the end of the lower trail, you will find a 20-foot waterfall.  The size of this waterfall will vary depending on recent rainfall. There is NO swimming or wading allowed near the waterfall. If it has rained recently, you should notice many waterfalls cascading down over the sandstone cliffs.

Twin Falls at Chapel Cave Trail

Chapel Cave Trail in Hocking Hills is a bridle trail, but hiking is allowed here. The trail begins at the Hocking Hills State Forest Rock Climbing and Rappelling area parking lot and follows the Long Hollow stream. After about a mile, the trail heads uphill to a rock outcropping, which is poorly marked. Turn right at the outcropping to the very large cave, also known as 21 Horse Cave.

If there has been recent rain, the twin falls can be seen toward the end of the trail. This trail can be very muddy!

Waterfalls in Southwest Ohio

Ludlow Falls

This waterfall is one of the easiest waterfalls to find as it is located by the side of the road. However, do not let it put you off that it is by the side of the road, as this is arguably one of the best waterfalls in the entire area. The falls are located under a highway bridge, and it is nearly 60 feet wide. You can also get into the creek if you go down some stairs.

Fallsville Falls

Fallsville Falls is located in a town that was actually abandoned back in the day! There is not much of the old town left as it has simply fallen into disrepair. However, whilst the locals decided to abandon the area, the waterfall that is here is stunning.

The trail to get to the waterfall is very easy, and it is only a 10-15 minute walk. It isn’t the highest of waterfalls, but it is beautiful and well worth a visit if you’re in the area.

Cedar Cliff Falls

Cedar Cliff Falls is on the east side of Indian Mound Reserve. This is a man-made dam that was constructed in 1887 for a flour mill that existed there. The dam is around 30 feet wide and 40 feet high. Hikers can enjoy a 2½ mile out-and-back trail consisting of the Gorge Trail and the Rim Trail. Use the parking area near Log House. If you would like to see the falls without the hike, use the Cedar Cliff Falls parking area.

Charleston Falls Preserve

Charleston Falls Preserve is in Tipp City and covers an area of 216 acres of prairie and forests. The waterfall is unusual, originating from underground springs to create a stream that falls 37 feet over rock strata, and towards the Great Miami River.

Englewood MetroPark

By following the green trail at Englewood MetroPark in Vandalia, visitors will pass three waterfalls: Martindale, Patty, and Oaks. If you wish to hike the complete loop, it is 3.8 miles and should take around 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Greenville Falls

Greenville Falls is a wide cascade that falls 20 feet down Greenville Creek in the Greenville Falls State Scenic River Area. In this same park is the site of an old mill, a gorge, and a natural limestone arch.

Toledo Museum Of Art

The Toledo Museum of Art is a cultural treasure trove for art enthusiasts and visitors alike. Founded in 1901, it houses an impressive and diverse collection of more than 35,000 works of art, including masterpieces by renowned artists like Rembrandt, Monet, and Van Gogh.

Toledo Mud Hens

The Toledo Mud Hens are a minor-league baseball team based in Toledo. Founded in 1896, this Triple-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers is enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. Their iconic home, Fifth Third Field, has a seating capacity of around 10,000.

Imagination Station Toledo

The Imagination Station, based in downtown Toledo, has exhibits that cater to the whole family, including exploring the science behind things such as agriculture, energy, engineering, and water.

The Canal Experience

The Canal Experience is in the heart of Toledo in the Providence Metropark. Visitors board a boat and learn about how they were used to carry goods between Toledo and Cincinnati.

There is also a gristmill and a working lock on the canal. You can learn about life in the 19th century on the canal. Enjoy a stroll along the canal with a picnic. Various picnic areas are available.

Toledo Botanical Garden

This is another free attraction in Toledo! The Botanical Garden is the only garden in this area. The grounds contain over 55 acres of gardens that visitors can stroll through. There are collections of shrubs and flowers, sculptures and ornaments that make this a charming place.

They also have the Garden Discovery Trail and Experience with interactive stations. There are areas of the garden for children to engage and play. Events also take place like small music concerts, pilates, and yoga.

Tony Packo’s Cafe

Tony Packo’s Cafe was made famous by the hit TV show M*A*S*H. It was mentioned a number of times by Corporal Maxwell Klinger, played by Jamie Farr, who is from Toledo.

The Tony Packo’s building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The cafe is a fantastic place to chill with a tasty hot dog! It is as much a museum as a cafe.

Toledo Lighthouse Tours

The Toledo Lighthouse is a wonderful piece of architecture that has attracted visitors for years. A visit to this lighthouse cannot be done by land though, so visitors must take the boat.

The boat tours to the lighthouse start at the Toledo Harbor Lighthouse Preservation Society on the marina at Maumee Bay State Park. Visitors can go inside the lighthouse; however, a level of fitness is required as visitors need to climb up a rung ladder and then take 76 steps to get to the top of the lighthouse.

Of course, visitors are not obliged to do this and may simply choose to stay outside and admire the location. The lighthouse is over 200 years old and has played an important role in keeping shipping safe.

National Museum Of The Great Lakes

The Great Lakes are the cornerstone of this entire region of not just Ohio, but all of the Northern United States. Visitors have the chance to see all the different artifacts that have been collected over the years. There is also an interactive exhibit that tells stories about the history of the Great Lakes.

The museum allows visitors to do self-guided tours, and the best exhibit is the century-old Col. James Schoonmaker ship.

Fort Meigs

Fort Meigs is a remarkable historical site that immerses visitors in the rich history of the War of 1812. Established in 1813 by General William Henry Harrison, it played a pivotal role in protecting the Northwest Territory from British and Native American forces during the conflict. Today, Fort Meigs is a meticulously reconstructed wooden-walled fort along the Maumee River.

The HandleBar

The HandleBar is a unique experience in Toledo. Get your party of at least six people and hit the town for the night on this ‘bicycle’ that looks remarkably like a streetcar! Each group is assigned a ‘bar handler’ who steers the vehicle and is there to help with everything. Stops are made at various bars. Music is available onboard, and guests can bring light alcohol, but no hard alcohol.
