Shawnee State Park

Located in the Appalachian foothills near the Ohio River, the 1,095-acre Shawnee State Park was once the hunting grounds for Native American Shawnee tribes.

Set within the 63,000-acre Shawnee State Forest, the scenic trail system offers a variety of options for nature lovers. There are two lakes and access to the Ohio River.

The Mural Project

The Mural Project is a series of artworks on the floodwall that protects Portsmouth from the Ohio River. This wall is 20 feet high and 2,090 feet along Front Street in the Boneyfiddle District.

Painting began in 1993, and all the art has been produced by artist Robert Dafford. This ongoing project depicts the history of Portsmouth and the surrounding areas for the last two centuries.

Most of the works have a 3-dimensional effect, making viewers feel they can step right into the scene!

Candyland Children’s Museum

The Happy Pot

This is a great fun family time experience! Paint your own pottery from a selection of pottery pieces. Learn about different glazes and techniques to decorate your pot.

There are frequent special painting events hosted here, such as holiday-themed sessions (like Bunny Ears Wine and Canvas), and workshops with guest artists.

Available for individual or group visits. Booking is available online, the facility is open Thursday through Sunday.

Otway Bridge

Otway is a little northwest of Portsmouth – about 20 miles, 30 minutes by car. The bridge is the last remaining covered bridge in Scioto County.

Built in 1874, this historic covered bridge is not only a testament to the architectural styles of the past but also a beloved symbol of the area’s rich heritage. It was fully restored in 2014.

During the holiday season, Otway Bridge is adorned with lights and seasonal decorations. In December there is the ‘Light of the Bridge’ parade and drive-thru. Something everyone can take part in, decorate your vehicle to join in the parade or even pull a float!

White Gravel Mines

White Gravel Mines in Minford are just a short distance northeast of Portsmouth – about 14 miles, 20 minutes by car. This is not just a wander through crystal caves, it is a complete production!

With two annual events, The Christmas Cave and The Easter Cave, this free-to-visit destination tells stories through lights and displays. The Christmas Cave tells the story of the birth of Jesus, and the Easter Cave tells the story of the life of Jesus.

The journey through the cave is on a path of approximately ¾ of a mile and will take around 45 minutes.

Deadbolt Escape Rooms and Mysteries

With a choice of six rooms, fans of this popular pastime can have great fun here! Each room has a one-hour time limit. The location is an abandoned historic shoe factory in the Boneyfiddle District of Portsmouth.

The rooms include Murder at Boddy Mansion, Precinct 740, and Castle Dracula. Book online, where you will need to sign a waiver. Gift cards are also available online.

Southern Ohio Axe Throwing

Axe throwing is another popular pastime these days. It may sound like a dangerous day out, but it really isn’t. Your party will have guidance throughout your visit, and you will be taught how to throw an axe into the target.

Children must be over the age of 8, and no open-toed shoes should be worn. Online booking is necessary.

Oddfellows is an eatery with a difference – sure, the food is great, but there are also four duckpin bowling lanes and ten arcade games. River Days – held over Labor Day weekend with family fun and live music on the riverfront in Portsmouth and the surrounding area.

White Gravel Mines Production is a non-profit that offers free, dramatic educational events to spread the Word of Jesus. White Gravel Mines of Minford, Ohio, began as a white quartz gravel mine under south central Ohio’s hills in the early 1900s.

In 2016, the non-profit started the Christmas Cave in the gravel mines, and it has become the most visited event of the year. Tens of thousands of visitors have made this an annual tradition.

The Christmas Cave tells the story of the birth of Jesus, and the Easter Cave in the Spring tells the rest of the story.

All ages are welcome! Enjoy the beautiful lights, see the story of Jesus, and try some delicious barbecue. No pets allowed. RSVP for bus groups.

It is a self-guided tour that involves a lot of walking. The path is clearly marked, and you can visit at your own pace. Benches are available throughout the display. Limited mobility assistance is available.

Have your picture taken inside the enchanting caves by a professional photographer. Christmas Cave merchandise is available, too!

About Ohio Caverns

The Ohio Caverns were discovered in 1897 by a farmhand who was plowing a field. Since then, they have become a popular attraction for tourists and locals alike.

There are over two miles of passageways that range in depth from 30 feet to 103 feet.

The caverns are open year-round, seven days a week, from 9 am to 5 pm. Visitors can take guided tours to explore the incredible natural wonders hidden beneath the Earth’s surface.

Tours at Ohio Caverns

The guided tours at Ohio Caverns are the best way to explore the stunning underground world of the caverns. There are five tours available. All except one of the tours are led by knowledgeable and experienced guides who provide insights into the geological formations, history, and significance of the caverns.

The tours are designed to be family-friendly and accessible to visitors of all ages and abilities. However, it’s important to note that the tours do involve walking on uneven terrain and stairs, so comfortable shoes are a must.

NOTES: Guided tours can start as frequently as every 10 to 15 minutes at busy times, and there is a limit of 20 people. A discounted combo ticket for both the Natural Wonder Tour and the Historic Tour is available.

Natural Wonder Tour

This summer tour follows a winding path and enters the cavern through a sinkhole entrance. The area this tour covers was discovered in the 1920s. This tour takes approximately 50 minutes.

Historic Tour

The summer Historic Tour begins on a shuttle bus to the original entrance of the caverns, and then this tour takes in parts of the caverns that were opened between 1897 and 1925. This tour takes approximately 50 minutes.

Limestone Tour

• Wheelchair and stroller-friendly

This summer tour caters to visitors with limited mobility. It follows a winding path to the top of the sinkhole entrance and then takes a short loop inside the cavern. This tour takes 25 minutes.

Winter Tour

This tour includes highlights of the Natural Wonder and Historic Tours, as well as an extra section that does not feature in any summer tours. This tour takes approximately 50 minutes.

Tree Tour

• Wheelchair and stroller-friendly

This is a year-round, self-guided tour of the grounds around the Ohio Caverns. Tree tour maps are available at the ticket counter. Each tree in the park has a sign with a fact about that tree. Some of the trees you will see in the park are Eastern Red Cedar, Sassafras, Pawpaw, Norway Spruce, Ohio Buckeye, and London Planetree.

Crystal King at Ohio Caverns

One of the most impressive features of the Ohio Caverns is the Crystal King. A massive column of sparkling crystals that stands over 5 feet tall. Other notable formations include stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstones, which form over millions of years as water seeps through the limestone rock and leaves behind mineral deposits.

Activities and Facilities

In addition to the guided tours of the caverns, there are several other activities that visitors can enjoy at Ohio Caverns. Here are some of the most popular ones:

Gem Mining

At the sluice, visitors can purchase bags of dirt containing rough gemstones and fossils, which they can sift through to find treasures to take home.

Gift Shop

The Caverns’ gift shop offers a wide variety of unique souvenirs. Including jewelry made from gemstones found in the caverns, books about Ohio’s geology, and other memorabilia.

Picnic Area

There is a designated picnic area where visitors can enjoy a meal or snack before or after their tour. The area has picnic tables, grills, as well as a playground for children.

Educational Programs

Ohio Caverns also offers educational programs for school groups, scouts, and other organizations. These programs teach visitors about geology, conservation, and environmental science in a fun and engaging way.

You can pick up a ‘passport’ at any of the four caves involved, which will be stamped at each cave you visit. If you visit them all you will receive an ‘Ohio Cave Trail’ T-Shirt. The four caves are:

If you’re planning a trip to Ohio Caverns, here are some tips to help you make the most of your visit:

• Book your tickets in advance: To ensure that you get the tour time and date that you prefer, it’s a good idea to book your tickets in advance, especially during peak season.
• Wear comfortable shoes: The tours of the caverns involve walking on uneven terrain and stairs, so be sure to wear comfortable and sturdy shoes.
• Dress appropriately: The temperature in the caverns is a constant 54 degrees Fahrenheit, so it’s a good idea to bring a light jacket or sweater.

About Old Man’s Cave

Old Man’s Cave is one of 7 trails in Hocking Hills State Park. Comprised of the Upper Falls, Upper Gorge, Middle Falls, and Lower Gorge, it travels along the magnificent gorge cut through the entire 150-foot thickness of the Blackhand sandstone. The name is derived from the hermit Richard Rowe who lived in the cave for a good part of his life.

This is a large recess cave. The cliff is vertical and reaches 75 feet above the creek. The cave is around 250 feet long, with a height of around 50 feet.

Hiking at Old Man’s Cave

Old Man’s Cave is a one-way trail system around 1.5 miles long. This entire loop takes you through the Lower Falls, Lower Gorge, Middle Falls, Upper Falls, and Upper Gorge.

Along this trail, you will go over bridges and through tunnels. Discover the stunning rock formations, waterfalls, and the large recess cave.

This hike is rated ‘moderate’, although there are a lot of steps and it is steep in places. You can head back to the parking lot before the Lower Falls if you want to. This cuts the hike down to one mile.

Devil’s Bathtub

The Devil’s Bathtub is a unique waterfall that is tiered between the Upper Falls and Old Man’s Cave. The upper part of the falls drops into a basin making a whirlpool before the water drops into the large pool.

Facilities at Old Man’s Cave

A visitor center and a campground are very close to Old Man’s Cave. The refurbished Hocking Hills Lodge is also nearby.

Visitor Center

This visitor center is worth a visit before your hike. In this center, some displays go through the history of the cave. It also discusses the geography of the area as well. Snack items are available to purchase and visitors also have the opportunity to browse and buy items from the gift shop. Restrooms are also provided.

Campground

The Hocking Hills State Park campground is next to the Old Man’s Cave trail entrance. This campground is very popular so it is recommended that bookings are made well in advance.

Caves in Northwest Ohio

Seneca Caverns

Seneca Caverns are Ohio’s largest caverns and are the only safe and passable earthquake crack beneath ground level. Walk and climb natural stone steps and pathways to reach Ole Mist’ry River at the lowest level of 110 feet below the surface. The crystal-clear flowing stream is part of the groundwater system beneath the surrounding area.

Perry’s Cave and Family Fun Center

Perry’s Cave, a natural limestone cave and an Ohio Natural Landmark, is the main draw of Perry’s Cave and Family Fun Center at Put-in-Bay. The cave is 52 feet underground and was discovered by Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry in 1813.

Crystal Cave

Crystal Cave is the world’s largest geode. Crystals line the walls and ceiling of this cave, which is 40 feet below ground. Heineman Winery owns and operates the cave, and it saved the family-run business from bankruptcy during Prohibition.

Old Maid’s Kitchen

Old Maid’s Kitchen, formerly Mary Campbell Cave, is a rock shelter in Gorge Metro Park, which straddles Cuyahoga Falls and Akron. The cavity is approximately 130 feet wide, and up to 50 feet deep in places.

Zane Shawnee Caverns and South Wind Park

Zane Shawnee Caverns is an amazing experience with fantastic shapes within the caverns. The owners of this park are the Remnant Band of the Shawnee Nation. There is the Shawnee Woodland Native American Museum and Pioneer Village on the same site.

Caves in Southeast Ohio

Rock House in Hocking Hills State Park

Rock House is unique within the Hocking Hills region; it is one of 7 hiking trails in the area. It is the only true cave in the park. It has a tunnel-like corridor and is up a 15-foot cliff.

This House of Rock has a 25-foot ceiling, and the main corridor is 200 feet long and around 20-30 feet wide. It is formed from Black Hand Sandstone.

Rockbridge State Nature Preserve

This is a stunning place to visit if you are in the area. Rockbridge is a true highlight of this area’s beauty. It gets its name from the rock formation that spans across the area and is used as a bridge.

This is a wonderful place to go hiking and to also explore the local flowers, trees, and wildlife. There is also a rock in the formation of an overhang cave, the “Rock Shelter.”

Ash Cave

Ash Cave is in the stunning Hocking Hills State Park. It is the largest recess cave located east of the Mississippi River! Ash Cave is open all year round, and is a must-see for visitors to the Hocking Hills area! Even in the cold of winter, it truly is a sight to behold!

Old Man’s Cave

The actual cave located at Old Man’s Cave is not what you could consider as grand as others we’ve mentioned, but it is still definitely worth a visit! The small cave is located on-site and was once lived in by brothers Pat & Nathaniel Rayon, who arrived in the area in 1795.

Old Man’s Cave

Old Man’s Cave is one of the 7 major hiking trail parks in Hocking Hills. The most popular trail at Old Man’s Cave is a one-way trail loop that is approximately 1.5 miles long.

Ash Cave

Ash Cave is located in the southernmost part of Hocking Hills. The path back to the massive horseshoe cave is paved. When walking this path, we have seen wheelchairs and motorized carts navigating the paved path well. Beautiful hemlocks and beech trees surround the area and provide an amazing backdrop.

Cedar Falls

Cedar Falls is a 0.5-mile-long hike that is considered moderate and strenuous with steps. It is a one-way trail with a waterfall, unique rock formations, and bridges. It takes about 40 minutes to walk this trail. Leashed pets are welcome, but there is no wading or swimming allowed in the waterfall or creek areas.

Hocking Hills Canoe Livery

If you are looking for adventure, the Hocking Hills Canoe Livery is perfect for you. This livery rents out kayaks, canoes, tubes, and rafts. There are cabin rentals and tent camping options on-site. Two tours are available.

Hocking Hills Adventures

The Hocking Hills Adventures facility is over 200 acres and is within minutes of Hocking Hills State Park. This livery rents out canoes, kayaks, tandem kayaks, tubes, and rafts. Four tours are available.

The Fun Center offers camping, luxury treehouse rentals, cabin rentals, an inflatable park, mini golf, and more.

Hocking Hills Escape Games

The escape room here is booked with 6 people at a time. The Hocking Hills escape room usually takes about an hour, unless you are exceptionally good at it! The game is designed as a challenge; therefore, not everybody wins.

Columbus Washboard Co

The Columbus Washboard Co started in Grandview, near Columbus. It moved to Logan in 1999. This is the only washboard manufacturer still operating in the United States.  The washboard factory continues to assemble the products by hand with teams of skilled craftsmen. Tours of the factory are available.

Pencil Sharpener Museum
