About Amish Country

The Amish population in Ohio is around 84,000 and is second only to Pennsylvania in the US. Holmes County is home to around 39,500 of those people, making it the largest Amish community in the world. Amish Country spreads into Tuscarawas County, Trumbull County, and Geauga County, too. The cities with the most things to do are Millersburg, Berlin, and Sugarcreek. Other towns include Walnut Creek, Fredericksburg, Charm, and Winesburg.

The Ohio Amish community mainly speaks Dutch-Pennsylvanian, which derives from the German language and American English. The ‘Dutch’ comes from the English word that was used in earlier times to describe people of German and Netherlandic origins.

Berlin Escape Room

Berlin Escape Room has three rooms for you to try to escape from: Panthers Hollow, The List, and The Boyd Schoolhouse. There is a free online Scavenger Hunt that is a driving hunt for clues. About the Tours

Agriculture and Farming will always be highlighted, showing how the Amish work, farm, raise animals, make money, and do many daily chores without all the modern conveniences.

Shops and Artisan stops are open year-round but are most popular in the fall after harvesting. If you love food, you’ll love this tour!

Wineries are an increasingly popular part of these tours. Look out for Wine Tours on the booking form. This is not part of the Backroads tour, but if you arrive early for your tour, you will be taken to some locations for wine tasting while you wait.

The narrative on these tours focuses on how and when the Amish settled here and why they believe and live as they do.

Backroads Tour

The Backroads tours begin at 2 pm daily, Monday to Saturday. Booking is not necessary, but preference will be given to booked groups. No two tours are the same, the tour is tailored to the people. Whatever you want to see or do will be included if possible. The Artisan stops do not usually take credit cards, so be sure to have cash with you.

Dining Tour

The Dining Tour is basically the same as the Backroads Tour with a meal at an Amish home added.

Amish Heartland Tours offers bus tours of Amish Country. They will arrange a Pizza Meal in an Amish Home, a Meal in an Amish Home, an Amish Farm or Home Tour, or Private Custom Tours. Country Acres Mini Golf

Country Acres Mini Golf has two 18-hole courses. The Barn is perfect for beginner and intermediate players looking for fun with just a little challenge thrown in. The Bridge will test the skills of the best players! It features a roaming water feature, a covered bridge, elevation changes, a waterfall, and unexpected obstacles.

When the golf is over, indulge in hand-dipped ice cream, homestyle pretzels, or frozen fruit bars and Philadelphia frozen ice.

Amish and Mennonite Heritage Center

The Amish and Mennonite Heritage Center is home to the Behalt Cyclorama, one of only four cycloramas in the US. Behalt is a 10-foot-tall, 265-foot-long cyclorama, or mural-in-the-round. It tells the history of the Amish people from 1525. 30-minute guided tours are available here.

In 1978, Heinz Gaugel began work on the cyclorama with the intention of relating the reasons why the Amish live the way they do. In 1988, the Mennonite Information Center (the original name of the Amish and Mennonite Heritage Center) purchased the painting with about 100 feet of it completed.

Visitors were able to watch Heinz paint until 1992 when the work was completed.

In 1993, Heinz Gaugel created ‘Immigrants’ Arrival in the New World’ in sgraffito on an external wall of the Mural Hall. Sgraffito is a technique of layering contrasting colored plaster, then the image is achieved by scratching to produce a drawing. Although this technique has been used in Germany since the 13th century, it is very rarely seen in America.

Amish Country Riding Stables

Amish Country Riding Stables offers guided horseback trail rides through Ohio’s Amish Country. Trail rides are available between May and October each year.

This site also has Guggisberg Swiss Inn and Doughty Glen Winery. This location is an all-in-one luxury getaway destination.

Yoder’s Amish Home

At Yoder’s Amish Home you can take a guided tour and learn about how the Amish live. This is a 30-40 minute tour with knowledgeable local guides. You will visit both homes on the property and the barn.

The barn is the center of an Old Order Amish homestead, housing a range of animals. If you visit in spring when there are newborns, the guides will allow you to hold some of them. Look out for the swallows that nest there too!

This is a good starting point for your Amish County discovery, as it answers a lot of questions that may arise while visiting other attractions.

Victorian House Museum

This 28-room Queen Anne-style home is the Holmes County Historical Society’s museum of Victoriana and Holmes County history. This house was built in 1901 by a Cleveland industrialist, L.H. Brightman, and it has an area of approximately 7,000 square feet. It is a beautiful building with amazing décor and exhibits.

Farmer’s Produce Auction

The Farmer’s Produce Auction is a wholesale market for local farmers to grow and sell their produce. Here you will find sales of livestock, ponies, carriage and tack, draft horses, and anything to do with farming! There are also shows such as the Amish Country Home & Garden Show. This is a very popular and lively place to visit!

Hershberger’s Farm and Bakery

Hershberger’s Farm and Bakery is a very popular destination. It features a bakery, a farm store, a large petting area, a food trailer, and more. The Hershberger’s Fry Pies are a local favorite.

The Farm at Walnut Creek

The Farm at Walnut Creek is home to over 500 animals with species from six of the seven continents. You can see exotic animals such as giraffes, camels, and zebras, along with native species such as horses, llamas, and buffalo. You can view and hand-feed the animals from your car or from a horse-drawn wagon.

The Farm at Walnut Creek is a working Amish farm where you may see planting, plowing, harvesting or other farm work being carried out. You can see canning, quilting, and baking taking place in the non-electric farmhouses.

You are free to take photos everywhere at this farm.

World’s Largest Cuckoo Clock

Sugarcreek was founded by Swiss settlers, and there remains a huge Swiss influence in this town. The World’s Largest Cuckoo Clock is the most obvious! Right in the middle of the town, this clock strikes every half hour when the cuckoo pops out, then Swiss polka music plays as the band emerges, and a couple dances.

Age of Steam Roundhouse

The Age of Steam Roundhouse Museum is a testament to the golden era of railroading. Here you can see locomotives, railroad cars, tools, and machinery of bygone days. The Warther Museum Christmas Tree Festival takes place in November, with over 100 decorated trees, wreaths, and home décor!

The Warther Museum Christmas Tree Festival has a host of decorated trees and items, none of which have the same theme, so you surely won’t get bored seeing them all!

The display is open until 7 pm each night of the festival, except the final night when the event closes at 5 pm.

There is a small admission charge for adults; children under the age of 12 go free. Proceeds go to the Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital Auxiliary.

About the Warther Museum Christmas Tree Festival

The festival is returning for its 30th annual fundraising event, with over 100 decorated trees, wreaths, and other holiday home decor that will fill the museum with festive cheer.

The Christmas Tree Festival is a holiday tradition for many families. You can place a vote on your favorite large and small tree and enjoy the evenings with live music from local entertainment.

Don’t forget to check out the museum’s famous train carvings while you’re there!

The decorated trees and other items will be available for purchase. Proceeds go to the Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital Auxiliary to provide patient care equipment and facility improvements, which benefit the local community.

A preview party will be held on November 10. Tickets go on sale on October 10. Tickets are available online or at the door.

Technology at Columbia Woodlands

All of the cabins (but not the tents) use a form of smart technology, which we love! You can control the lights, temperature, music etc from a touchscreen. One of our favorite things was the music, you could control where it was being played: fire pit area, hot tub area, porch, inside, etc. It had ample music genre selections available! 

Of course, there is WiFi, in case you need to connect to check on work or simply upload some pictures of your fabulous stay to social media! There is a 40-inch flat TV that boosts lots of channels from Dish TV, but to be truthful, we were so busy we never turned it on!  There is also a TV in each bedroom, upstairs! 

Fire Pit Areas

You can access the fire-pit area from a paved walking path that is neatly landscaped on each side. The walking path curves out into the fire pit area where you can find a paved seating area with 6 comfortable seats waiting for you. 

Don’t know how to start a fire? That’s okay! Each and every fire pit is already set up for you. Complete with wood, fire starter sticks, and paper! There is a HUGE supply of firewood ready to go for you. It is in a 3 sided shelter to help keep it dry. You will not have the problem of running out of firewood, guaranteed. But if you do, (you guessed it) just text the concierge! 

ALL of the fire-pit areas whether at cabins or chalets are set up for you, along with an ample supply of paper, fire sticks, firewood, and fire starter. If you need sticks to roast your marshmallows or hotdogs, just let the concierge know! They can help you!

Special Touches

One thing I have noticed is that Columbia Woodlands offers so much more than you can find on its website or social media. This place is a hidden gem, so if you think they whetted your appetite with their website, you will be even more amazed by it in person! I’ve found that in many of my favorite places that I stay, this is the case.

So let me share some of the little things that are special touches at Columbia Woodlands. Prior to your arrival, you fill out a preference sheet. You are asked what size robe you would like, what temperature you would like your cabin/tent, what type of music you’d like playing, and if you’d like white wine, red wine, or non-alcoholic options. 

Columbia Woodlands has started to provide breakfast and lunch with each cabin and tent rental. It is included in the nightly rental. You do not get to choose what you get and the menu rotates seasonally. We had two cabins rented during this visit and we got the same food each day during our 3 night stay. You can learn more about that below in the food section. 

Upon arrival, you’ll find your complimentary wine and charcuterie board. On previous occasions, we’ve had a vegetarian gluten-free board to fit our needs, this time around it was all fresh fruit and was SO delicious! If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special occasion let them know! They’ll help you celebrate with something special!

Bedside, you’ll find a bottle of Fiji water and a chocolate. We love the little touches that make this palace even more special! In the bathroom, you will find extras of the toiletries you may have forgotten at home!

Animals at Columbia Woodlands

One of my favorite things (okay I have a lot with this place) is the wildlife! There are so many deer on site! It is common to see deer most times of the day when you ride the golf cart trails. Towards the back of the property, the staff feed the deer which makes for easy viewing. 

There are some wild turkeys onsite as well. If you are lucky enough to be there at the right time of the year, you may spot some baby turkeys! There was a set of 6 baby turkeys that we kept seeing around the property during our June visit.

Turtles! You can see at least two kinds of Ohio turtles at Columbia Woodlands. We spotted some Eastern Box Turtles on the golf cart path up to Ceremony Hill and also the grassy area below Ceremony Hill. We also spotted some turtles sunning themselves on a log at Bullfrog Pond but they moved so quickly that we couldn’t get close enough to identify them! 

Golf Carts at Columbia Woodlands

The golf carts at Columbia Woodlands are one of the unique offerings that add to the fun of this property! Each cabin and tent gets an electric golf cart! The cart has the name of your cabin/tent so you can easily tell them apart. Use the carts to move around the property to different areas such as Bluegill Pond, Bullfrog Pond, Ceremony Hill, and more. We love to take the carts out to see the wildlife! 

The carts have basic rules: no off-roading, drive on gravel or paved paths, turn off when not in use (helps the battery life), charge overnight, etc. The golf carts get a lot of use, so if you feel that yours is not quite driving correctly, let the concierge know. We had one that was very squeaky and was scaring the deer when we drove it, but they quickly gave us a replacement. 

Concierge at Columbia Woodlands

The Concierge at Columbia Woodlands goes above and beyond. The Concierge is available via text or call from 7 AM to 10 PM. Of course, if there is an emergency, you can reach out, outside of those hours.

The Concierge is there to help you with anything you need. Drink orders, food orders, problems, suggestions, information, you name it, they can help! Want to change your food delivery from your cabin to Ceremony Hill? Just send them a text!

Food at Columbia Woodlands

Columbus Woodlands has started to provide breakfast and lunch with each cabin and tent rental. It is included in the nightly rental. You do not get to choose what you get and the menu rotates seasonally. We had two cabins rented during this visit and we got the same food each day during our 3 night stay.

• Breakfast at Non Food Allergy Cabin: muffins yogurt, granola, mixed fruit bowl (seemed to have been possibly thawed fruit) 
• Breakfast at Food Allergy Cabin: This cabin was vegetarian, dairy-free, gluten-free, and almond-free – dairy-free yogurt, granola, and a bowl of fruit. We did get some fried tofu the first day only.

• Lunch at Non-Food Allergy Cabin:  Wraps, Pasta Salad, Chips, and Cookies
• Lunch at Food Allergy Cabin: This cabin was vegetarian, dairy-free, gluten-free, and almond-free – this cabin got only salads each day.

The non-food allergy cabin did get more food, though it was mostly the same thing each day, so if you want variety just be sure to pack some extra munchies! 

The chef did come in on his day off to meet us after we checked in, which was a nice touch. (However, we are not sure if this is common practice). He said he wanted to speak with us directly to make sure he understood our needs. He asked us what we wanted to eat, he asked us ideas of what to feed us, etc. I had previously filled out paperwork, confirmed with email and phone about our needs, so this was nice to see he was checking again and taking it seriously. The chef was extremely conscientious about getting our requests correct and making us feel comfortable!

Activities

Columbia Woodlands offers a variety of activities for guests to enjoy on over 400 acres of property. Fishing is a very popular activity with guests. There are three ponds and these are fully stocked. There are also over 8 miles of trails that guests can also explore. Guests can do as little or as much as they wish. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, just ask! Other activities at Columbia Woodlands include:

• Wine tasting: Needs to be scheduled prior to your visit. Please discuss this with Guest Services when booking.
• Yoga: Whether you are looking for Meditative Yoga, Couples Yoga, or even Wine and Yoga, there is something to please all! 
• Canoeing: Canoes and paddle-boards are offered for all ages to enjoy the glorious Many Springs Lake!
• Mountain biking: Bring your trusty mountain bike, and explore the 10 different cycling trails!
• Leisure: Each Chalet has a comfortable, seated fire-pit area. Enjoy a glass of wine in the beautiful surroundings, and be on the lookout for any deer or turkeys that may be out human-spotting!
• Games: Croquet, Board Games & Corn Hole are provided at many locations in the 400-acre property!
• Dining: The chef will prepare you a private dinner and serve at any of the various dining locations! Whether it is a fireside feast or a patio picnic – there are lots of options!

Hiking

Whether you would like a guided hide or prefer to hike alone, there is something to please everyone!

• Jacob’s Creek Trail: This beautiful walk leads to a gorgeous waterfall and picnic area. 
• Appalachian Plateau Trail: This is a steep hike up, with amazing views of nature!
• Salamander Trail: A lovely open trail with lots of woodland and wildlife tracks.
• Ron’s Way Trail: A relaxing & peaceful stroll leading you through plenty of hillsides and wildlife.
• Miner’s Moonlight Trail: A lovely scenic hike with glorious views of a ravine.
• Raspberry Trail: Surround yourself with beautiful pine trees and raspberry bushes in abundance on this trail!

Be on the lookout for nosey (nature) neighbors out human-spotting, while you are out hiking! We have seen deer, turtles, foxes, lots of birds, and even some baby turkeys! There is bound to be even more lurking around, depending on the time of day and time of year!

The Meadows Pavilion

The Meadows Pavilion is nestled amongst the beautiful wildflowers and pine trees. This luxurious pavilion offers something for everyone, whether a guest prefers to stay indoors or prefers to enjoy the outdoors. It is a wonderful place to wind down and relax with a glass of wine. Whilst enjoying a drink, guests are able to relax by the fireside on the leather sofas that are available. Guests may also choose to dine here and listen to all the wonderful nature that Columbia Woodlands offers.

The Spring House

The Spring House at Columbia Woodlands is blessed to be located within a beautiful 400-acre estate in the heart of Ohio. This is a very exclusive luxury property and wedding venue. This venue can accommodate up to 150 guests when a wedding is taking place in the winter and up to 175 guests when a wedding is taking place in the summer. This is a unique wedding venue that offers the married couple and guests an experience that they will never forget.

The venue has a rustic edge. A few examples of this are the furnishings like the pine walls and the iron chandeliers that look like they have come straight from The Titanic. 

In the private woodland is where the Wedding Pavilion Venue is situated. The ceilings of the venue are stained wood and an ascending stone staircase that is a perfect scene for wedding photographs and videos. The venue is a perfect place for a sunny day and also in fall as the tree leaves start to change color. There are also views of the Dover Mountains from the Wedding Pavilion and this is also the perfect backdrop for photographs.

The Bridal Suite

The Bridal Suite has a stunning stone floor, a wood-burning fireplace, a bar, and its own catering kitchen. A string in the bow is that guests are able to relax outside with a drink. There is a fire pit for guests as well. A 4-tier fountain is also on hand to wow your guests and there is also plenty of easy parking.

Columbia Woodlands is a 400-acre luxury property located in Dover Ohio. Columbia Woodlands offers Luxury Tent Camping, aka Glamping as well as upscale cabin rentals. The property is located down a private drive behind a gate. Today, we are going to specifically be sharing about the Dreamcatcher Cabin at Columbia Woodlands!

The Dreamcatcher Cabin

As you enter the beautifully inviting paved driveway to get to the Dreamcatcher Cabin you will be instantly drawn to this stunning cabin. It is truly a statement piece!

Exterior

You will be welcomed by the amazing 10-foot wide wrap-around porch that has ample seating on each side! The porch and steps are decorated with lanterns and battery-operated candles, flowers, and plants. There are two high-top tables, each with 4 chairs that make it easy to enjoy your meals outdoors!

There is a corn hole, a grill, a hot tub, and three separate seating areas on this covered porch, in addition to the tables. The porch can be used in all types of weather! We were thankful to have it on a rainy day! 

You’ll spot some tree lights on each side of the cabin that add just the perfect amount of relaxation to the atmosphere. When we say that this cabin is inviting, we mean it! 

Interior

Once inside, you enter into the open kitchen and living room floor plan. The full kitchen is equipped with all the appliances and kitchen tools that you need. There is a large rectangular table that seats 6 people. There is a Keurig coffee machine and they provide the pods. Run out? Just text the concierge for more!

The living room has two comfortable chairs and a couch that are positioned in front of the wood-burning fireplace.  Also located on the first floor is a laundry closet complete with a stacked washer and dryer as well as a half bath.

You can walk straight through the first floor to the back porch. Out that door of Columbia Woodland’s Dreamcatcher, you will find the hot tub and the firepit area. The hot tub can seat 7 and each seat has different jets. We had fun finding our favorite seat for the best jet position. We also liked that the hot tub offered 3 seats that were a touch higher and 4 deeper seats. This was especially great for the shorter folks in our party!

Head up the wide gentle staircase to find the master bedroom complete with two closets and a balcony that faces the front of the cabin. This is perfect for animal watching and coffee drinking in the morning. There is a second bedroom upstairs. Both bedrooms have king-sized beds with the most comfortable bedding! There is a full luxury marble bathroom.

Technology at Dreamcatcher Cabin

All of the cabins use a form of smart technology, which we love! You can control the lights, temperature, music etc from a touchscreen. One of our favorite things was the music, you could control where it was being played: fire pit area, hot tub area, porch, inside, etc. It had ample music genre selections available! 

Of course, there is wifi, in case you need to connect to check on work or simply upload some pictures of your fabulous stay to social media! There is a 40-inch flat TV that boosts lots of channels from Dish TV, but to be truthful, we were so busy we never turned it on!  There is also a TV in each bedroom, upstairs! 

Dreamcatcher Fire Pit Area

You can access the firepit area from a paved walking path that is neatly landscaped on each side. The walking path curves out into the fire pit area where you can find a paved seating area with 6 comfortable seats waiting for you. 

Don’t know how to start a fire? That’s okay! Each and every firepit is already set up for you. Complete with wood, fire starter sticks, and paper! There is a HUGE supply of firewood ready to go for you. It is in a 3 sided shelter to help keep it dry. You will not have the problem of running out of firewood, guaranteed. But if you do, (you guessed it) just text the concierge! 

ALL of the firepit areas whether at cabins or chalets are set up for you, along with an ample supply of paper, fire sticks, firewood, and firestarter. If you need sticks to roast your marshmallows or hotdogs, just let the concierge know! They can help you!

Behind the firepit area, at Dreamcatcher, is a grassy meadow that provides the most beautiful scenery while you are enjoying the fire. While we didn’t see any deer in this specific area, we did see some on both sides of the house. The deer liked to wander past the house in the early morning (6-8 am) and in the evening around (5-7 pm). One morning, there was a beautiful fawn about 5 feet from the porch. I enjoyed his company while I sipped my morning coffee! 

Special Touches at Columbia Woodlands

One thing I have noticed is that Columbia Woodlands offers so much more than you can find on its website or social media. This place is a hidden gem, so if you think you’d like it based on their website, you will absolutely love it because there is so much more! I’ve found that in many of my favorite places that I stay, this is the case.

So let me share some of the little things that are special touches at Columbia Woodlands. Prior to your arrival, you fill out a preference sheet. You are asked what size robe you would like, what temperature you would like your cabin/tent, what type of music you’d like playing, and if you’d like white wine, red wine, or a non-alcoholic option.

Upon arrival, you’ll find your complimentary wine and charcuterie board. On previous occasions, we’ve had a vegetarian gluten-free board to fit our needs, this time around it was all fresh fruit and was SO delicious! If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special occasion let them know! They’ll help you celebrate with something special!

Bedside, you’ll find a bottle of Fiji water and a chocolate. We love the little touches that make this palace even more special! In the bathroom, you will find extras of the toiletries you may have forgotten at home!

Animals at Columbia Woodlands

One of my favorite things (okay I have a lot with this place) is the wildlife! There are so many deer on site! It is common to see deer most times of the day when you ride the golf cart trails. Towards the back of the property, the staff feed the deer which makes for easy viewing. 

There are some wild turkeys onsite as well. If you are lucky enough to be there at the right time of the year, you may spot some baby turkeys! There was a set of 6 baby turkeys that we kept seeing around the property during our June visit.

Turtles! You can see at least two kinds of Ohio turtles at Columbia Woodlands. We spotted some Eastern Box Turtles on the golf cart path up to Ceremony Hill and also the grassy area below Ceremony Hill. We also spotted some turtles sunning themselves on a log at Bullfrog Pond but they moved so quickly that we couldn’t get close enough to identify them! 

Golf Carts at Columbia Woodlands

The golf carts at Columbia Woodlands are one of the unique offerings that add to the fun of this property! Each cabin and tent gets an electric golf cart! The cart has the name of your cabin/tent so you can easily tell them apart. Use the carts to move around the property to different areas such as Bluegill Pond, Bullfrog Pond, Ceremony Hill, and more. We love to take the carts out to see the wildlife! 

The carts have basic rules: no off-roading, drive on gravel or paved paths, turn off when not in use (helps the battery life), charge overnight, etc The golf carts get a lot of use, so if you feel that yours is not quite driving correctly, let the concierge know. We had one that was very squeaky and was scaring the deer when we drove it, but they quickly gave us a replacement. 

Concierge at Columbia Woodlands

The Concierge at Columbia Woodlands goes above and beyond. The Concierge is available via text or call from 7 AM to 10 PM. Of course, if there is an emergency, you can reach out, outside of those hours.

The Concierge is there to help you with anything you need. Drink orders, food orders, problems, suggestions, information, you name it, they can help! Want to change your food delivery from your cabin to Ceremony Hill? Just send them a text!

More Attention to Details

The chef did come in on his day off to meet us after we checked in, which was a nice touch. He said he wanted to speak with us directly to make sure he understood our needs. He asked us what we wanted to eat, he asked us ideas of what to feed us, etc. I had previously filled out paperwork and confirmed by email and phone about our needs, so this was nice to see he was checking again and taking it seriously. He had some great ideas for breakfast including breakfast burritos and doing some veggie wraps for lunch, but we did not see any of that. But that’s okay, we brought a lot of food because I didn’t know what to expect. 

One day our lunch order was shorted by half. We got two salads instead of four salads. I say this not to complain, (actually the opposite) I am sharing because that evening the concierge showed up with some “gluten-free, dairy-free, almond-free” peach cobbler for the four of us! I hadn’t said a word about the situation, but they realized the error and made us a sweet treat. My point is that they go above and beyond to exceed your expectations.
