About Beavers

Beavers are semiaquatic rodents and are the second largest living rodents in the world, after capybaras. They have waterproof-fur-covered bodies, hand-like front feet, and webbed back feet. Their tails are flat and scaly.

The beaver has chisel-like, large front teeth enabling them to cut through wood such as maple and oak. These teeth are constantly growing and are necessary for their survival.

Beaver Dams

Beavers make their homes in forested ponds, lakes, and rivers. They build dams to protect themselves from predators such as coyotes, wolves, and bears. The pond that the dam creates also holds their food during the winter.

Dams, which can range in size from a few meters to more than 100 meters, are mainly built during nighttime hours and the beaver carries mud in their front feet and wood in their teeth. The dam diverts the water to lessen the flow pressure. Once the water is deep enough within the pond, the beavers can build their lodge. A study has shown that beavers can rebuild a destroyed dam and restore water levels in approximately eight hours!

The effect of these modifications to the natural environment on the area is that the ecosystem builds on the change, creating wetlands used by many other creatures. Because of this aid to the ecosystem, beavers are considered to be a Keystone Species – ‘a species that has a disproportionately large effect on its natural environment relative to its abundance’.

The Beaver Lodge

The beaver’s lodge is built from sticks, mud, and rocks, and it has an underwater entrance with a ‘water lock’ to keep the lodge dry and protect it from predators.

The inside of the lodge will have several chambers for sleeping, raising young, and storing food. The thick lodge walls help keep the beavers warm during the colder months. A ventilation hole is made in the top to allow air into the lodge.

Lodges can be built on the banks of a river or stream, or completely in the water.

The following video is of a beaver lodge that was temporarily abandoned as the dam broke in a storm. The photographers could only do this because the water level had dropped enough to reveal the lodge entrances.

Diet and Reproduction

Beavers are herbivorous, eating tree bark, plants, grasses, and sedges. They are generally monogamous and breeding typically occurs during the winter season. Litter sizes range from 1 – 4 kits, born after approximately 128 days gestation.

Beavers live as a family with the parents, the kits, and sometimes yearlings may stay in the family home.

Beavers in Ohio

The beaver population in Ohio has been ‘settled to growing’ over the last 10 years, but as in all of North America, the population did get dangerously low. Protecting beavers has seen a major rise in numbers since the early 1900s, and beaver trapping is once again allowed with a valid license in Ohio. Trapping season is from late December to late February.

About Water Snakes in Ohio

Seven species of water snakes call Ohio their home. Each species of snake has its own characteristics and unique behaviors. For example, some snakes are timid, and some are aggressive if they are provoked, but all are non-venomous. Most water snakes spend time on dry land also. Below are some details about how to identify each type of water snake found in Ohio.

Queen Snake

Regina septemvittata – Characteristics:

• Adults are around 2 feet in length, and relatively thin.
• They have two lines along their sides and they are dark green or dark brown.
• Their bellies are yellow, with four very dark stripes.
• Do not usually bite, but do release a foul odor.

Information About the Queen Snake

Queen snakes are found near streams and rivers, they prefer moving water. These snakes are not too concerned about being seen by humans.

When they are not in the water, they can be found on rocks and branches that are close to the edge of the water.

Plain-Bellied Water Snake

Nerodia erythrogaster – Characteristics:

• Adults can grow to a length of 4 feet, and they have quite a stout body.
• These snakes are dark in color, normally black, brown, or gray.
• They have a bright orange, yellow, or red underbelly.
• If threatened they will bite and release a foul odor.

Information About the Plain-Bellied Water Snake

The Plain-bellied Water Snake can be found around all types of water sources, such as wetlands, ponds, streams, rivers, lakes, culverts, and floodplains. Even though this is a species of water snake, it likes to spend quite a bit of time on dry land.

When the weather is humid, it is not uncommon to find them in the woods and not very close to a water source. These snakes will eat both aquatic and terrestrial prey, such as fish, frogs, salamanders, and crayfish.

Eastern Ribbon Snake

Thamnophis saurita – Characteristics:

• The adults have a very long tail, and they can grow to over 2 feet in length.
• They are a dark brown or black color, with three bright stripes.
• They have brown and white on the throat.
• Unlikely to bite, but will leave a foul odor.

Information About the Eastern Ribbon Snake

The Eastern Ribbon Snake is almost always near a water source. They can be found in Ohio’s wetlands, floodplains, ditches, streams, rivers, ponds, and lakes. When they are not in the water, they like to relax in trees and bushes.

Eastern Garter Snake

Thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis – Characteristics:

• These snakes can grow to over two feet in length when they are adults.
• Colors can be different between individuals, usually green or black.
• All individuals have a yellow stripe down the center of their backs.
• If threatened will release an odor and will strike and bite.

Information About the Eastern Garter Snake

This species of snake likes basking in the sun. The best place to see them is close to sources of freshwater. They can also be found in parks, gardens, lawns, and farmland. They do prefer grassland that is close to ponds and marshes, but they can be found in other environments as well.

Northern Water Snake

Nerodia sipedon sipedon – Characteristics:

• The adults of this species can grow to over 4 feet in length.
• They are dark brown or grey, with black bands.
• The older these snakes get, the darker they become. The elders are usually black.
• The male of this species is smaller than the female.
• Can and will give a nasty bite!

Information About the Northern Water Snake

This is the most common species of water snake in Ohio. Northern Water Snakes prefer either slow-moving or flat-calm water, such as pools, ponds, and lakes. When they are not in the water, they can be spotted basking on logs and rocks. They eat fish, toads, frogs, and salamanders.

Common Water Snake

Nerodia sipedon – Characteristics:

• This species of snake can grow to over 3 feet in length.
• They are brown with a thick body.
• They have sandy-colored blotches.
• Can bite if provoked

Information About the Common Water Snake

The Common Water Snake can be found throughout Ohio. They are so common that they are found in all sorts of water sources like streams, rivers, swamps, ponds, lakes, and rivers.

Kirtland’s Snake

Clonophis kirtlandii – Characteristics:

• Adults are usually just over a foot in length.
• They are a reddish brown, with dark blotches.
• Their underbelly is usually pink or orange.
• They have a black head and a white throat.

Kirtland´s Snakes are always found near water. They live in swamps, prairies and wetlands. These snakes are very shy, and they are unlikely to be seen in the daytime. These snakes prefer the cover of darkness, and this is when they feed. They eat prey like grubs, fish, young crayfish, and leeches.

Unfortunately, due to loss of habitat, their numbers have shrunk, but in Ohio, there are healthy populations. These snakes also like to live in burrows near their respective water areas.

Species of Bears in Ohio

The only bear species that lives in Ohio is the Black Bear (Ursus americanus). Before the settlers arrived in Ohio, there was a very healthy population of Black bears that used to roam throughout the state. Unfortunately, when the settlers arrived, hunting of these bears started to increase so the numbers fell.

The bears that were not hunted had to contend with a change of scenery and habitat, and some of these bears were shot. In the mid-1800s, the black bear was not living in Ohio due to hunting. Thankfully, there is now a population of Black Bears that live in southern, southeastern, eastern, and northeastern areas of Ohio.

About Bears in Ohio

The black bear that is found in Ohio can be found in other parts of continental North America. Even though these bears are known as ‘Black’ bears, that is not to say that all individuals are black. Some individuals may be a brown color, a blue color, or even a copper color. These bears do have a large nose, and this is a way of identifying this species from other species of bear like the Grizzly, as they have a smaller nose.

An adult black bear can weigh 700 pounds. Whilst this is on the higher end of the scale, a lot of males will weigh between 300-400 pounds. The females weigh a fair bit less, normally between 170-180 pounds. When males are standing up, they can be as tall as six feet and the females are normally around a foot smaller.

Black Bear Reproduction

The male black bear will often mate with several female partners. The female will also (not always) mate with a couple of different partners. The mating season tends to be for 5-6 weeks during June and July. A female black bear’s egg is not fertilized straight away, they are fertilized in December and the gestation period is around 6 weeks.

When a female has her first litter, it is normally just one cub. If the female has more litters, then there may be 3 cubs in that litter. Females usually have litters every other year. The sow and her cubs will stay in their den for around 3 months before they venture out.

The young will stay with their mother for the first 18 months of their lives. Black Bear cubs do grow quite quickly in the first year and they can weigh around 80 pounds by the time they go into their dens for the winter.

Habitat of Black Bears

Black Bears enjoy living in places like dense woodlands, wetlands, and swamps. Whilst it is perfectly normal to see these bears in open areas, they do prefer woodland. These bears do have a large home range that can cover 120 square miles for males and 50 square miles for females. There has been evidence of some bears being as far as 125 miles away from where they were born.

Black Bear Behavior

Black bears are crepuscular. This means that they are active first thing in the morning and late in the evening around dusk and at night. When bears live in areas where humans also live, then the bears will only tend to come out when the sun has gone down in the evening. They prefer to come out when the humans are not around.

Bears are omnivores, so they will eat grass, twigs, berries, and meat. They also like to eat insects and some trees like beech trees and hickory.

Tips for Dealing with Problem Black Bears

Some individuals can be a nuisance, especially when they are looking for food. There are some great tips about dealing with a nuisance bear. You need to bear-proof your backyard:

• Remove bird feeders, including hummingbird and suet feeders
• Store your garbage in a garage or a secure container
• Keep pet foods inside, especially at night
• Clean out grease traps on grills after each use; store grills in a garage or shed
• Place electric fencing around beehives
• Pick fruit from berry bushes as soon as possible

Is Bear Hunting Allowed in Ohio?

No. Hunting, trapping, and hurting a black bear in Ohio is strictly prohibited. Any person caught doing these activities will face stiff penalties.

The Bobcat (Lynx rufus) is native to North America, although it ranges from southern Canada through most US states and into Mexico. Bobcats in Ohio were once non-existent but now have healthy, rising numbers.

About Bobcats in Ohio

This species is now a native of Ohio, and it is one of 7 wild cat species that can be found throughout the continent of North America. Bobcats were found throughout the state of Ohio until settlers arrived, and their numbers plummeted to zero.

Thankfully, the population of bobcats started to rise after World War II, although they were still quite elusive at that time. It is only since 2002 that their numbers have risen, and they are now seen more regularly. The bobcat is seen more in the Southern and Eastern areas of Ohio. However, they are now creeping into other parts of the state thanks to them being monitored.

Bobcats prefer to keep away from humans, and they are happy to hunt at night, so the chances of spotting them are quite slim. However, if you do come across a Bobcat, give it a lot of space. They may look cute and cuddly, but they really aren’t – they are wild cats!

Physical Appearance

Bobcats are around double the size of an average-sized domestic cat. Bobcat males tend to be larger than females, and they can weigh 40 lbs. Bobcats have thick fur that is quite dense and incredibly soft. The colors of each bobcat differ in much the same way as domesticated cats.

Some bobcats will be a gray color, whereas some are quite brown and reddish, and some have spots on them. The fur on most bobcats tends to be quite dark down their spine, and they are also normally white on their belly; however, some individuals can be quite different from that. Bobcats do have a bobbed tail, so they are quite short, whereas most species of domesticated cats have a medium-long tail.

Bobcats are one of four lynx species; the others are the Canadian lynx, the Iberian lynx, and the Eurasian lynx. Each lynx species has facial ruffs and ear tufts, and shorter tails than other cats. The other lynx species live in cold regions, but the bobcat prefers warmer climates.

Hunting and Habitat

Bobcats hunt in the same fashion as domesticated cats; they wait for their prey, and when they think they have a chance, they will pounce. Bobcats eat all sorts of food, like small mammals, rabbits, and any fresh deer carcasses. They will also eat bugs, birds, fish, and reptiles. Their main prey is the cottontail rabbit.

Bobcats will adapt to the environment in which they find themselves. A bobcat needs cover for hunting and for sleeping. If it has those two things, then it is more than happy. It is quite common to find them in a range of different environments. Some examples of this are deserts, swamps, prairies, fields, and forests. Bobcats will make use of some areas that have been used by humans, but they are quite shy, so when there is a lot of human activity, they will normally stay away.

Bobcats are solitary and territorial animals and will only meet up with other bobcats for breeding. Adults have a large range, and it is quite normal for their territories to overlap. Some bobcats can have a range of an impressive 100km, but this is extreme. For a regular individual, their range will be more likely to be 20km.

Reproduction

Whilst bobcats have been known to reproduce at any time of the year, the normal breeding season is the winter and spring months. Female bobcats are pregnant with their kittens for around 9 weeks. When a bobcat knows that she is pregnant, she will start looking for a safe place to have her kittens and raise them while they are nursing.

A kitten’s eyes will open after 10 days, and they are fully weaned after around 8 weeks.

After weaning, the juvenile bobcats will venture out and learn to live independently. When a female bobcat has a litter, it could be anything from 1 kitten to 7 kittens. The average size of a litter is 2-3 kittens.

Ohio Bobcat Management Plan

The number of bobcats in Ohio has risen quite a lot since the turn of the Century. They are now returning to places where they have not been seen previously. Research has been conducted over the past few years at Ohio University to learn more about bobcats and how they live.

Their research indicated that if harvests are more limited in the other areas of Ohio, this will encourage more bobcats to move and reproduce. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources has published a very long read about the Ohio Bobcat Management Plan.

Bobcats are protected in Ohio, and it is illegal for them to be harmed or trapped in any way. As their numbers have risen a fair bit over recent years, they were taken off the endangered or threatened species list in 2014.

About Snakes in Ohio

The range of snakes that can be found in Ohio is quite interesting. Snakes can vary quite a lot between the different species. Some examples of this are snakes that prefer to stay near the water, and there are also species of snakes that prefer dry grasslands. Ohio is a state of contrasts, and the snakes here are no exception. In this article, the snakes have been split into categories.

Venomous Snakes in Ohio

Three species of snakes live in Ohio that are venomous.

Eastern Copper Head Snake

• Agkistrodon contortrix

The adults can reach up to 37 inches in length. They have a very broad head and a muscular body. Each individual can have different colors. Some are quite dark, and some can be lighter. Please be aware that these venomous snakes can be found in mixed woodlands and areas that have plenty of rocks. These snakes like to be active in the daytime when it is not too hot, so spring and fall are good times to see them.

The Eastern Copperhead is a ‘pit viper.’ This means that they can sense their prey due to their body heat. If you do get bitten by one of these snakes, try not to panic. Their venom is not too powerful, but you should wrap the bite area with a towel and, if possible, hold the bite area above your head. Most bites from these snakes are ‘dry bites,’ so they do not release any venom.

These snakes feed on small animals like frogs and small rodents. When they bite their prey, they sit back whilst the venom gets to work. Once the venom has worked, they will then consume their catch.

Eastern Massasauga Snake

• Sistrurus catenatus

The adults can grow to around 2 feet long.  They have quite thick bodies and heart-shaped heads, and they are rattlesnakes, so check out their rattles at the end of their tails. These snakes are either gray or light brown with patches on their backs.

The best place to find these snakes is in Ohio’s wetlands. Their name is from the Native American Ojibwe language, and in English, it means “Great River Mouth.” They also like swamps, wet prairies, bogs, and marshes, as well as wetlands.

This rattlesnake is a loner and prefers to hibernate on its own. They will try to find a nice, quiet spot where they can regulate their body temperature. Some places they like to hibernate are tree roots, logs, and underground burrows. They must hibernate in a place that does not get cold, as they could freeze to death.

It is highly unlikely to get a bite from one of these snakes, as they are quite shy and don’t seem to have a lot of time for humans. If one is unfortunate enough to be bitten, these snakes have cytotoxic venom, so a trip to the Emergency Room would be required.

Timber Rattlesnake

• Crotalus horridus

The adults of these snakes can grow to a length of 60 inches. The colors of these individuals can be anything from black to yellow. These snakes have quite a heavy look to them, and they have their rattle at the end of their tails. The Timber Rattlesnake is also known as the Canebrake Rattlesnake. They can be found in the southern counties of Ohio in places like forests, farms, rivers, and floodplains.

Timber Rattlesnakes like to ambush their prey. They release venom into it, then let the prey go. When the venom has taken effect, then they will eat their catch. Whilst these snakes do not tend to bite humans often, they are still the most dangerous snakes in Ohio. They have a high venom yield, and their fangs are very long.

The one thing about these snakes is that if you do come across one and they are not happy about your presence, they give you plenty of warning that they want you to go away!

Water Snakes in Ohio

Below, we feature four species of Water Snakes that call Ohio their home.

Queen Snake

• Regina septemvittata

The Queen snake will usually grow to a length of around 24 inches. These snakes are either brown or a dark green color, and all species have two lighter stripes that run down their sides. The underside of this snake is usually a tan color, and it will have four dark stripes that run along its belly. This is the only species that has a belly like this.

These snakes like to relax around places that have water. In an ideal world, the water will be moving, so you are more likely to find them around rivers and streams. They also have highly permeable skin, so this is the main reason why they like to be near water. These snakes do enjoy going for a swim, and when the weather conditions are right, they enjoy basking on rocks as well. Queen snakes will eat young crayfish, as the young crayfish cannot use their pinchers, so they are quite easy prey.

Plain-Bellied Water Snake

• Nerodia erythrogaster

Plain-bellied water snakes can grow to a length of 40 inches. Colors can be different between individuals. The colors tend to be dark green, brown, black, or gray. They have a plain belly (naturally), and the color is usually red or, more rarely, yellow.

These snakes can be found in northwestern Ohio, and they can be found near water sources like ponds, streams, rivers, and wetlands.

Even though it is a water snake, it does enjoy spending quite a lot of time on land as well. When the weather is humid, it is not uncommon for them to be in woodlands where there is no water supply.

Plain-bellied Water Snakes have no issue taking prey from the water or the land. They enjoy eating salamanders, fish, frogs, and crayfish.

Another difference that the Plain-Bellied Water Snake has from other water snakes is that they stay still when they are hunting. All the other species of water snakes give chase.

It is advised not to capture these snakes for two reasons. The first reason is that under stress, they let off a foul stench. The second reason is that they will not think twice about biting someone.

Northern Water Snake

• Nerodia sipedon sipedon

Northern water snakes can grow to a length of 55 inches. They are a dark brown color with a reddish tinge and some lovely black bands. As they get older, the color of this snake will turn black. In this species of snake, the female is larger than the male. The Northern Water Snake is the most common water snake in Ohio.

Northern Water Snakes prefer water sources that are slow-moving. Some of the places they enjoy are marshes, lakes, ponds, and streams. They do like to bask as well, so it is quite likely that you will see them on old trees and logs.

These snakes eat prey like fish, salamanders, and frogs. They are not poisonous, so when they eat their prey, they will capture it and eat the prey whilst it is still alive! When you see these snakes, they will usually go into the water and swim away.

Do not capture these snakes as they can get quite aggressive very quickly, and they have a painful bite. They also let off a foul odor when they are distressed, so it is best not to even think about grabbing them.

Copperbelly Water Snake

• Nerodia erythrogaster neglecta

Copperbelly Water Snakes can grow to a length of 60 inches. They have a solid dark, usually black, back with a bright orange-red underside. Thin bands of black extend from the snake’s back that may meet or nearly meet at the belly.

The Copperbelly Water Snake is an endangered species – experts estimate that fewer than 100 individuals, possibly as few as 40, remain – and they are now only known to live in Williams County, northwest Ohio. Frogs and tadpoles make up the main diet of these snakes.

Copperbelly Water Snakes live by shallow wetlands, floodplain wetlands, or a combination of both. Individuals move hundreds of feet between wetlands, and during an active season, they will use multiple locations.

Although non-venomous, a bite from a Copperbelly Water Snake can be painful.

Black Snakes In Ohio

Below are the top four black snakes that live in various areas of Ohio.

Eastern Black King Snake

• Lampropeltis getula

Eastern Black King Snakes can grow to a length of 48 inches. These snakes are black, but they can have yellow or cream speckles on them. The body of this snakes is quite stocky, and you cannot really tell where the head finishes and the body begins. They have a cream underside, and in some individuals, it is checkered.

The Eastern Black King Snake is found in the southern counties of Ohio. The places where these snakes live are swamps, streams, wetlands, and suburban areas as well.

These snakes are quite shy, and they prefer to shelter in places where they will not be disturbed. They prefer to be active in the daytime, and in the warmer months, they are active in the mornings. The black King Snake is a constrictor, so when it goes after prey like lizards, birds, rodents, and other snakes, it will constrict the prey and asphyxiate it.

These snakes do not like to be disturbed, so handling them is not a good idea. They can let off a foul odor and strike.

Black Rat Snake

• Pantherophis alleghaniensis

The Black rat snake is the longest snake that you will find in Ohio. These snakes usually grow to a length of six feet, and some individuals can actually get to eight feet! As the name suggests, they are black, and they can have a light color between the scales.

The best places to find Black Rat Snakes are fields and forests. These snakes are constrictors, so they constrict their prey before consumption. These snakes are actually very useful as they eat venomous snakes. So, if you manage to find one of these snakes, then it is best to leave well alone due to their natural usefulness.

Northern Black Racer Snake

• Coluber constrictor constrictor

The Northern Black Racer can be found in Eastern Ohio. These snakes can grow to around 55 inches, and one fact that is quite unusual about these snakes is that they use their eyesight. This means that they will come up to dogs, cats, and humans.

Most snakes tend to use their smell before their eyes. Once they do realize that they have gotten up close and personal with humans, most of these guys will slither off.

The Northern Black Racer also breeds with the Blue Racers, so a lot of the offspring can be difficult to pick out. It is quite common for people to get these snakes confused with the Black Rat Snakes, as there are few differences between them.

Ribbon Snake

• Thamnophis saurita

If you like to go to one of Ohio’s great shorelines, then there is a chance that you will bump into a ribbon snake. The ribbon snake can grow to 26 inches, and they are quite sleek.

Shorelines are the places where the ribbon snake likes to chill as they are quite close to the water. These snakes eat aquatic animals like tadpoles, frogs, salamanders, and fish.

The ribbon snake looks quite similar to the garter snake; the only difference is the stripes between the two species. If you see a ribbon snake swimming, it is always very surprising to see how fast they can move in the water.

Eastern Garter Snake

• Thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis

The Eastern Garter snake can grow to a maximum of 26 inches. These snakes have a unique yellowish stripe that runs right down their back. The stripe is quite distinctive, as the snakes tend to be either black, dark green, or brown.

The Eastern garter snake is very common in all areas of Ohio, and is one of the most common snakes. These snakes are pretty good at adapting to most areas, but the most common places to see them are parks, cemeteries, prairies, and gardens.

They also prefer to be near an area that has a water supply. However, it is also quite normal to find them in dry places. These snakes like to feast on animals like frogs, salamanders, fish, toads, and earthworms. If the conditions allow, they will also eat other animals like beetles and small rodents.

Plains Garter Snake

• Thamnophis radix

Plains garter snakes are rare in most of Ohio and can grow up to 22 inches. There is a population of them in Wyandot County. These snakes need wet prairie lands to live in, and back in the day, large areas of Ohio were wet prairie land. Nowadays, this is not the case, but in Wyandot County, there are still areas of land that are suitable for this species.

Even though they are very selective about where they live, they are very similar to other species of garter snakes. These garter snakes are not fans of humans, so when humans set up in an area where the snakes live, they will simply go elsewhere.

Butler’s Garter Snakes

• Thamnophis butleri

Butler’s Garter Snakes can grow up to 20 inches in length. These snakes have three distinctive stripes that cover the body, and they tend to be either black or a very dark brown color.  They like to feast on animals such as worms and leeches. These snakes are a little different from their cousins as they do not have a diverse diet.

They can be found in the Northwestern areas of Ohio, and they exist in isolated groups, so to see one is a bit more difficult than some of the other species that live in Ohio. The best places to see Butler’s Garter Snakes are marshes, grasslands, and meadows.

Rat Snakes in Ohio

Two species of rat snake can be found in Ohio.

Gray Rat Snake

• Pantherophis spiloides

The Gray Rat Snake normally grows to around 70 inches in length, but some individuals have been recorded to grow to 100 inches in length. In different areas, these snakes have different colors; in Ohio, they are black. Some individuals may be completely black, and some individuals have a smattering of red and white dotted around their bodies.

These snakes prefer to live in trees, so do not be surprised to see one hanging out (quite literally) of trees. They can also be found in trees that are close to swamps, prairies, streams, and farms.

Another place where they can be found is in old outbuildings like barns and sheds. They like these buildings because they love to eat rodents, which can be found in places like this.

These snakes are known to be very active, especially when they are hunting, and they are constrictors as well. Whilst these snakes are quite placid, they will get angry if disturbed. They can shake the end of their tail, similar to a rattlesnake, and if they are handled, they will strike if they feel anxious.

Eastern Foxsnake

• Pantherophis vulpinus

The adults of this species can grow to around 70 inches in length. They are a light brown color with bronze and red tinges on their backs and bellies. Eastern fox snakes can be found throughout Ohio in places like farms, grasslands, and prairies.

These snakes prefer wet areas over dry locations. They also don’t have any issue climbing up into a tree as they are excellent climbers.

During the summer, they like to hunt at night, and during the day, they will relax under rocks. In the winter months, they hibernate in burrows underground. These snakes like to consume rodents, birds, frogs, toads, and eggs.

They are also a constrictor species, so they constrict their food. Eastern Foxsnakes are not fans of being disturbed, and they can produce a foul odor to try to get rid of predators.

About Coyotes in Ohio

Coyotes are known for their high intelligence, and when they know that they have to go to pastures new, they will go. The coyote is a wily animal, and they know what they need to do to survive. Thanks to Ohio’s amazing countryside and seasons, coyotes have decided that it is a great place to set up home.

Coyotes can be seen in all of Ohio’s 88 counties, and it is due to their intelligence, they have also prospered. The way their versatility can make near enough anywhere their home is to be admired.

If you think you have a coyote in your backyard, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources has produced a document with some great advice and tips. It also shows you the front and back paw prints of a coyote.

Appearance

The coyote has a wolf-like appearance with yellow eyes and a bushy tail. The coyote also has quite large ears that can have a comical appearance.  They tend to be quite slender animals and look pretty similar to a domesticated dog of medium build.

The coyote and the domesticated dog are from the same family, so sometimes it can be quite hard to tell the two apart. Most coyotes are a gray color, with some having a rusty tinge to their body, faces, and lower legs. The male of the species is larger than the female, and both genders have a bushy tail. They can weigh up to 50 pounds.

They have a wonderful coat of soft fur and longer, tougher outer hairs. The coyote sheds its hair once a year in the summer months, replacing its fur with an entirely new coat.

Habitat

Coyotes live in dens. Both parents will find an area that has ideal conditions for a den. Once they have decided on a good place, the parents will dig down to conceal the entrance to the den. The tunnel they dig out to their chamber can be anything from a few meters in depth to around 50 meters.

If a coyote is disturbed, then they will not think twice about moving to another place. If they need a new den quickly, they will pick places like hollow logs and culverts. A coyote’s den does not necessarily have to be in the countryside. Coyotes can also be found in towns and cities; they may make dens close to parking lots and houses.

Behavior

Coyotes are nocturnal animals, mostly active at night. However, when they are in places where they feel comfortable, they will not have an issue with being out during the day. The coyote will hunt during the day in large groups or pairs. It is also normal for the pair to not be related, but to work as a team and share the spoils.

Coyotes enjoy a range of food such as nuts, vegetables, mice, voles, shrews, rabbits, and rats.

They can also try to catch sheep and chickens. Most farmers have precautions in place to keep their livestock secure. As mentioned before, it is the coyote’s ability to evolve that makes it a winner. When humans move into an area, the wildlife drops off, however, this has no bearing on the coyote, which will thrive.

Reproduction

Coyotes breed from January through March. The coyote’s gestation period lasts for around 63 days, and the litters will be born in April. The size of the litter can vary; some can be as few as a solo pup, and some can be as many as 12 pups.

It is the job of the mother to decide where she will have her litter. The female will maintain the den to ensure that it is fit for her pups. If a den is quite large, 2 or 3 females have been known to share it, and if the females are related, then they will help each other when caring for their young.

Both the mother and the father will hunt for food generally, but when the pups are born, the father will get the required food for his family. At around 3 weeks of age, the pups will start to leave their den and check out the outside world.

At 2-3 months, the pups will start learning their hunting skills. These skills will be crucial for the rest of their lives. The family unit will stay together through the fall, and then they will disband.

Some of the juveniles may stay a few miles away, and some can travel over 100 miles away. Young males who have not left the unit will be run off, but it is not unusual for juvenile females to stay with their families until the following year.

The Spotted Horse Ranch

The Spotted Horse Ranch is a massive place. It has over 35 miles of trails and over 500 acres of land. Guests of all abilities are welcome here! Single riders are welcome, as well as groups. Spotted Horse Ranch is the only place in Ohio that offers a Cowboy Cookout!!!!

There is also a hall available for guests who would like to host celebrations here like parties, cookouts, christenings, and even weddings. The campgrounds are really big as well, so there is ample room for tents, trailers, and campers.

Uncle Buck’s Stable

Uncle Buck’s is a stunning scenic trail. It is located close to the Zaleski State Forest, and one of the rides goes through the forest. There are also three other trails of different lengths.

Uncle Buck’s is also unique in that it has a Saloon that delivers delicious food and beverages. At various times, they also host a BBQ and entertainment. This is a great place to visit, and you can comfortably spend hours here.

Facts About Garter Snakes

• They are named for their stripes – thought to look like the garters that men used to hold their socks up!
• They are the most widespread snake in the US
• They can have as many as 80 babies at a time!
• They give birth to live babies
• They are carnivores – although their diets can vary greatly
• They can swim and climb… as well as slithering!

Butler’s Garter Snake

• Thamnophis butleri

You have a good chance of seeing one of these garter snakes in Ohio gardens and countryside. These snakes are also at home in states such as Michigan and Indiana.

These snakes can be shy, but if an individual lets you handle it, then they tend to be quite placid. The Butler’s Garter Snake is usually found in places that are very quiet and have been abandoned by people and other species of animals. An example is fields that used to be worked and have since been left alone. The Butler’s Garter Snake enjoys feasting on leeches and earthworms.

Eastern Ribbon Garter Snake

• Thamnophis sauritus sauritus

The Eastern Ribbons Garter Snake can be found throughout the southeastern United States. The Eastern Ribbon Snake is semi-aquatic. These snakes do enjoy being in places that have humidity. Some examples of habitats are damp wood, swamps, lakes, rivers, meadows, and wet prairies.

While they do enjoy a lot of time in damp environments, they do spend the majority of their time out of water. While most garter snakes consume land-dwelling animals, the Eastern Ribbon Snake stands as an exception; they prefer to eat tadpoles, toads, frogs, small fish, and salamanders.

This garter snake has a very slender tail, so it does stand out from other species of garter snakes.

Plains Garter Snake

• Thamnophis radix

The Plains Garter Snake is a garter snake that can be found around the Wyandot County area of Ohio.

Their capacity to endure cold environments has earned these snakes renown, and this is one factor that keeps them visible even throughout the winter months. In the winter months, they will come out of their homes and sunbathe on rocks and slate. These snakes have got a lovely color to them, and they stand out a lot more than their cousins.

Eastern Garter Snake

• Thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis

The Eastern Garter Snake is the most common type of garter snake that can be found in Ohio. This is a subspecies of the common garter snake.

This species of snake is not only present in Ohio but also extends along the eastern region of the United States. The most common places to find this species of snake are in places like ponds, rivers, streams, prairies, and grasslands.

This snake can have different colors on its sides. Some individuals may be brown, green, or blue, and some may be yellow. A lot of the common garter snakes found west of Lake Erie are black.

Shorthead Garter Snake

• Thamnophis brachystoma

The Shorthead garter snake exists in Ohio; however, it is much less common than the other featured garter snakes. Pockets of individuals have been found around the Youngstown area.

These snakes prefer quieter environments, places like abandoned buildings and fields. They also prefer to stay in close proximity to water sources, which leads them to inhabit areas near lakes and rivers. The Shorthead garter snake is quite small, growing to a maximum length of 18 inches. Their heads are also very small and look quite compacted into the rest of the body.

About Stink Bugs In Ohio

Whilst some Stink Bugs do indeed stink, some of them do not stink at all. Stink Bugs tend to only spray when they are nervous or feel threatened as a defense mechanism.

All of them will stink if you do decide to squash them! Some stink bugs can have a nibble as well. If they do, it feels like a nip and only lasts a few seconds.

Stink Bugs in Ohio

There are quite a few species of stink bugs in Ohio, we have taken a look into the habits of nine of them.

Rough Stink Bugs

• Brochymena Quadripustulata

Rough Stink Bugs are a brown-gray color with orange spots. This species is one of the most common that can be found in Ohio. They also like to eat 18 different types of plants. The issue with this stink bug is that some of the crops that they like to eat include cereals like corn. They also like to eat fruit such as peaches and apples.

Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs

• Halyomorpha Halys

The Brown Marmorated Stink Bug is brown on top and has a whitish area at the bottom of the body. Colors have been known to vary with this species, so don’t be surprised to see some individuals who may be copper, red, or grey. All individuals have a blunt head and pale ring on each leg.

Black-and-Red Stink Bugs

• Cosmopepla Lintneriana

The Black-and-Red Stink Bug has a very black body and two spots of red on the body. In some individuals, this color can also be orange. At the top of the abdomen, there is a band that is normally red, but just as with the spots, some individuals will have an orange band.

Spined Soldier Stink Bugs

• Podisus Maculiventris

The Spined Soldier Bug is brown and has yellow legs. The Spined Soldier Bug is one of the stink bugs that is beneficial, as they like to eat different bugs. Their name is also a clue to their behavior, as they behave like soldiers as they protect their surroundings.

Two-Spotted Stink Bugs

• Perillu Bioculatus

The Two-Spotted Stink Bug can vary in color. Some individuals will have a white body, some will have a yellow body, and some even have a black and red body. To the untrained eye, they can be difficult to spot, but one thing that all of these individuals do have in common is that their beak is twice as thick as their antennae.

Rice Stink Bugs

• Oebalus Pugnax

The Rice Stink Bug is of a pale color, and it has a yellow mark on its back that looks similar to a triangle. A couple of Stink Bugs above in this article are helpful to gardeners and farmers. Unfortunately, the Rice Stink Bug is not one of them.

Anchor Stink Bugs

• Stiretrus Anchorago

The Anchor Stink Bug can be quite difficult to identify as its color and patterns vary among its individuals. Some of them can be black, some can be orange, and some can be bright pink. One thing they do have that can help identify them is that they all have a U-shaped pattern on the abdomen.

Black Stink Bugs

• Proxys Punctulatus

The Black Stink Bug can have quite easy characteristics to spot. They are black with black and cream legs. They have one white spot in the center of their shield, and they have quite pointy shoulders. Investigations into these stink bugs indicate they do not harm crops, and they can be found throughout Ohio.

Blue Shield Stink Bugs

• Zicrona Caerulea

The Blue Shieldbug has a very attractive blue shield with a green tinge. When they are at the nymph stage, they look very similar to ladybugs. These stink bugs are very pretty, but a lot of people who do not have experience in the field of stink bugs think they look like beetles.

Downs On The Farm

This is a wonderful place to visit as the main aim of the farm is for all people to get up close and personal with their animals. Downs On The Farm is a federally approved non-profit organization. It is a wonderful place where children who have special requirements are able to pet the lovely animals in peace and tranquility.

The farm also rescues a lot of its animals from abuse, so this place is close to the heart of many people. On the farm, there is also a playground for the kids and train rides.

Stearns Homestead Farm

Stearns Homestead Farm is the last working, educational farm in the Parma area. This farm is open on a seasonal basis from mid-May through to mid-October. The farm has lots of animals to see and pet as well.

Party at the Barn

This is a family-owned petting farm that arranges events as well. If you wish to hold an event at this petting farm, you need to contact them ahead of time to make a reservation. There are several different animals here that love to be petted, including kittens, goats, chicks, and pigs.

They even have a Pony who can give the smaller children a ride. This farm is open on a seasonal basis and offers various event packages, so it is best to check out their website.

The Spicy Lamb Farm

This is an intimate, small, family-run business that is very popular with visitors. The Spicy Lamb Farm has a range of animals that love to see visitors, including ducks, sheep, bees, and other farmyard animals.

Various fruits and vegetables are also grown here, so it is a really lovely setting. Classes, tours, and special events are available if you wish to visit the farm, and the farm also sells products.

The Ohio Bird Sanctuary

Now, this petting farm is a bit different! The Ohio Bird Sanctuary lets visitors enjoy our feathered friends up close and personal. Various viewing areas allow visitors to see birds, such as owls, songbirds, eagles, and hawks.

There is also a walk through the woods down to the local river. Along the walk, you can see the other birds that live here. The Ohio Bird Sanctuary is open all year round.

This is quite a large petting farm. It is over 400 acres. There are lots of animals here for visitors to pet, and there is also a focus on education.

Lake Metroparks Farmpark

This farm is located in Kirtland and has lots of animals for visitors to pet. Some of the animals here include rabbits, horses, alpacas, chickens, sheep, pigs, and cows.

Hershberger’s Farm & Bakery

Hershberger’s Farm is located in the heart of Ohio’s Amish country. In addition to the family petting area, there is also an Amish bakery, a food trailer, and a store.

The animals here are very friendly and enjoy interacting with people. There are ducks, horses, cows, rabbits, and others. You can also purchase some food to feed the animals. This is a fun day out for all the family.

Hale Farm & Village

Hale Farm and Village is open on a seasonal basis. It is located in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Of course, the farm animals are here and waiting for you to visit, but this farm also offers visitors the opportunity to observe demonstrations in crafts and trade as well.

Talks and demonstrations take place, and these activities tell people how the farm works. The people who work on the farm are in costume, so it really does feel like you are going back in time.

The Farm at Walnut Creek

This petting farm is a bit different as it is a working farm; the practices of the farm change as much as the seasons of the year change. Visitors can view the animals and even feed them as well.
