Sunset Ridge Lavender Farm is open for visitors from June to mid-July, but not every day, so check out their opening hours before setting off.

The large purple barn was built by the Ohio Amish in 2017 and is mortise and tenon construction. It is a work of art – a white oak frame held together with hickory pegs. The barn has a gift shop at the south end, a porch with rocking chairs for visitors to relax, and the remainder of the space is for activities.

Yoga sessions and photography sessions are popular activities.

Pick your own lavender. Each bundle should be 100-150 stems. No appointment is necessary for this activity. Scissors, rubber bands, and info on lavender picking is provided.

The gift shop offers culinary items, skin care and bath products, lavender bundles, jewelry, and more.

Cowvin’s Corny Maze is at Young’s Jersey Dairy in Yellow Springs, southwest Ohio. Cowvin is the name of one of the young cows at the farm.

This fall fun experience has a 3½ acre cornfield with over one mile of paths. At the end of the maze, kids are greeted with a play area full of activities. A wagon ride to the maze is included in the admission price.

The maze has lots of twists and turns and dead ends, making it a real adventure to find the exit! Open every day from 11 am to 6 pm (weather dependent). Children under 4 years old go free.

Tickets are available at the Young’s Farmstead Cheese Marketplace in the Dairy Store.

Carillon Historical Park in Dayton annually transforms into a family-friendly wonderland of lights and holiday cheer. The Carillon Tree of Light is a spectacle on its own!

The park is open all day every day, the lights and activities begin each evening at 5 pm. Thousands of lights adorn the historic buildings and bridges.

Children can visit with Santa at the Heritage Center until just before Christmas. Watch a puppet show, take a ride on the beautiful Carousel of Dayton Innovation, and take the Midnight Express Train ride on a one-mile journey.

There are stores open until 9 pm each evening for the adults to indulge in some holiday shopping, and local cafes will also be serving drinks and snacks.

Vino the Way is a wine and beer-tasting adventure through the corn maze at Mapleside Farms, Brunswick, Ohio. Held each Friday and Saturday from September to the end of October.

At the start of your Vino the Way adventure, you will receive a tasting box of food to accompany the drinks you will sample.

The wine-themed corn maze is a challenging labyrinth to navigate while enjoying wine, beer, and food along the way.

After the maze, visitors are given free entry to Mapleside Farm’s fall attraction, Pumpkin Village, where there are orchard tours, cow trains, a scenic hayride, and the longest slide in the US!

Entrance to the maze closes at 8.30 pm, and Pumpkin Village closes at 9 pm.

This is a rain-or-shine event and is available to over 21s only.

About Amish Country

The Amish population in Ohio is around 84,000 and is second only to Pennsylvania in the US. Holmes County is home to around 39,500 of those people, making it the largest Amish community in the world. Amish Country spreads into Tuscarawas County, Trumbull County, and Geauga County, too. The cities with the most things to do are Millersburg, Berlin, and Sugarcreek. Other towns include Walnut Creek, Fredericksburg, Charm, and Winesburg.

The Ohio Amish community mainly speaks Dutch-Pennsylvanian, which derives from the German language and American English. The ‘Dutch’ comes from the English word that was used in earlier times to describe people of German and Netherlandic origins.

Berlin Escape Room

About the Tours

Agriculture and Farming will always be highlighted, showing how the Amish work, farm, raise animals, make money, and do many daily chores without all the modern conveniences.

Shops and Artisan stops are open year-round but are most popular in the fall after harvesting. If you love food, you’ll love this tour!

Wineries are an increasingly popular part of these tours. Look out for Wine Tours on the booking form. This is not part of the Backroads tour, but if you arrive early for your tour, you will be taken to some locations for wine tasting while you wait.

The narrative on these tours focuses on how and when the Amish settled here and why they believe and live as they do.

Backroads Tour

The Backroads tours begin at 2 pm daily, Monday to Saturday. Booking is not necessary, but preference will be given to booked groups. No two tours are the same, the tour is tailored to the people. Whatever you want to see or do will be included if possible. The Artisan stops do not usually take credit cards, so be sure to have cash with you.

Dining Tour

The Dining Tour is basically the same as the Backroads Tour with a meal at an Amish home added.

Do make a reservation to be sure of getting the tour you require when you want it.

Amish Heartland Tours offers bus tours of Amish Country. They will arrange a Pizza Meal in an Amish Home, a Meal in an Amish Home, an Amish Farm or Home Tour, or Private Custom Tours. Country Acres Mini Golf

Country Acres Mini Golf has two 18-hole courses. The Barn is perfect for beginner and intermediate players looking for fun with just a little challenge thrown in. The Bridge will test the skills of the best players! It features a roaming water feature, a covered bridge, elevation changes, a waterfall, and unexpected obstacles.

Amish and Mennonite Heritage Center

The Amish and Mennonite Heritage Center is home to the Behalt Cyclorama, one of only four cycloramas in the US. Behalt is a 10-foot-tall, 265-foot-long cyclorama, or mural-in-the-round. It tells the history of the Amish people from 1525. 30-minute guided tours are available here.

In 1978, Heinz Gaugel began work on the cyclorama with the intention of relating the reasons why the Amish live the way they do. In 1988, the Mennonite Information Center (the original name of the Amish and Mennonite Heritage Center) purchased the painting with about 100 feet of it completed.

Visitors were able to watch Heinz paint until 1992 when the work was completed.

In 1993, Heinz Gaugel created ‘Immigrants’ Arrival in the New World’ in sgraffito on an external wall of the Mural Hall. Sgraffito is a technique of layering contrasting colored plaster, then the image is achieved by scratching to produce a drawing. Although this technique has been used in Germany since the 13th century, it is very rarely seen in America.

Amish Country Riding Stables offers guided horseback trail rides through Ohio’s Amish Country. Trail rides are available between May and October each year.

Yoder’s Amish Home

At Yoder’s Amish Home you can take a guided tour and learn about how the Amish live. This is a 30-40 minute tour with knowledgeable local guides. You will visit both homes on the property and the barn.

The barn is the center of an Old Order Amish homestead, housing a range of animals. If you visit in spring when there are newborns, the guides will allow you to hold some of them. Look out for the swallows that nest there too!

This is a good starting point for your Amish County discovery, as it answers a lot of questions that may arise while visiting other attractions.

Victorian House Museum

This 28-room Queen Anne-style home is the Holmes County Historical Society’s museum of Victoriana and Holmes County history. This house was built in 1901 by a Cleveland industrialist, L.H. Brightman, and it has an area of approximately 7,000 square feet. It is a beautiful building with amazing décor and exhibits.

Farmer’s Produce Auction

The Farmer’s Produce Auction is a wholesale market for local farmers to grow and sell their produce. Here you will find sales of livestock, ponies, carriage and tack, draft horses, and anything to do with farming! There are also shows such as the Amish Country Home & Garden Show. The Farm at Walnut Creek

The Farm at Walnut Creek is home to over 500 animals with species from six of the seven continents. You can see exotic animals such as giraffes, camels, and zebras, along with native species such as horses, llamas, and buffalo. You can view and hand-feed the animals from your car or from a horse-drawn wagon.

The Farm at Walnut Creek is a working Amish farm where you may see planting, plowing, harvesting or other farm work being carried out. You can see canning, quilting, and baking taking place in the non-electric farmhouses.

World’s Largest Cuckoo Clock

Sugarcreek was founded by Swiss settlers, and there remains a huge Swiss influence in this town. The World’s Largest Cuckoo Clock is the most obvious! Right in the middle of the town, this clock strikes every half hour when the cuckoo pops out, then Swiss polka music plays as the band emerges, and a couple dances.

Age of Steam Roundhouse

The Age of Steam Roundhouse Museum is a testament to the golden era of railroading. Here you can see locomotives, railroad cars, tools, and machinery of bygone days. The apple picking season is typically from early to mid-September, to early October. The orchards announce their start dates on their website or social media pages. Some of the busier orchards require reservations, so check out their website before you head out.

The majority of orchards have different varieties of apples available to purchase year-round, as well as other fruits and vegetables. Some have bakeries, some have farm market stores with homemade products. These orchards and farms are worth a visit any time of year when they are open, not just for the apple-picking season!

Apple Picking in Central Ohio

Lynd Fruit Farm

Lynd Fruit Farm in Pataskala is a well-established farm. As well as apples, visitors can pick their own berries, pumpkins, and sunflowers. There are also a lot of activities available for the whole family to enjoy!

The Orchard & Company

Here you will find a variety of activities including you-pick apples, tractor-drawn wagon rides, a corn pit, a huge hill slide, and much more fun for the kids. There is a café serving apple cider slushies and pumpkin donuts, among many other delights.

Bauman Orchards

At Bauman Orchards visitors can pick apples, peaches, strawberries, and blueberries. This orchard hosts many events throughout the year, and the farm market is open year-round. Be sure to check out their website for further information.

Rittman Orchards

Rittman Orchards have apples, peaches, berries, and sunflowers available for picking. There is a bakery that sells a variety of products, they have a ‘Pie of the Month’ with fillings such as caramel apple walnut, strawberry rhubarb, fruits of the forest, and more.

Brant’s Apple Orchard

As well as apple-picking, Brant’s has a bakery and a farm market. There is a picnic area by a pond with fish that apparently love a bite of a donut! The Covered Bridge Playground is fun for the kids. Brant’s hosts many events throughout their open season (August through November), including a fall festival.

Apple Picking in Northwest Ohio

Quarry Hill Orchards

Quarry Hill Orchards in Berlin Heights offer summer and fall you-pick. Apples are usually available from August to late October. Summer fruits that you can pick are cherries, raspberries, and peaches. Quarry Hill hosts many events throughout the year, details of which are available on their website and social media pages. There is an online shop as well as a farm store.

Johnston Fruit Farms

At Johnston Fruit Farms in Swanton, you can pick your own apples and pumpkins in the fall, and strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries in the summer. You can also pick flowers at this farm. There is a free petting zoo, games, and a sandbox for the children. Johnston’s makes cider in six varieties and you can view the cider mill at work. They also make a wide variety of donuts – fresh daily.

Apple Picking in Southeast Ohio

Hidden Hills Orchard

Hidden Hills Orchard in Marietta grows a wide variety of apples. Their six U-pick varieties are Buckeye Gala, Honeycrisp, Golden Delicious, Enterprise, Cameo, and Gold Rush. Hidden Hills produces an award-winning apple cider on-site. The orchard also grows cherries and peaches that are sold locally.

Fuhrmann Orchards

Fuhrmann Orchards offered you-pick apples for the first time in 2024. Early Fuji is the first of five varieties ready for picking in early September. The others are Golden Delicious (mid to late September), RubyRush (late September), Rosalee (early October), and GoldRush (late October to early November).

The Orchards grow 31 varieties of apples, there is an online chart so you can see when each variety is ready to purchase. Check the Facebook page for the you-pick availability.

Fuhrmann’s also have a sunflower field, you-pick pumpkins, as well as a wide variety of fruit and vegetables for sale. There is also an annual Apple Fest in October.

Apple Picking in Southwest Ohio

Peifer Orchards

Peifer Orchards in Yellow Springs offer U-pick throughout the summer and fall, with apples and pumpkins in the fall and blackberries, red raspberries, and black raspberries in the summer. Leave the stress of everyday life behind when you go onto Majestic Meadow Alpaca Farm’s 20 acres of open pastures, where you are free to roam and visit their alpacas and other animals.

Majestic Meadows has over 70 alpacas, llamas, miniature horses, miniature donkeys, miniature potbellied pigs, and highland miniature cows. But that’s not all! They also have three types of goats, three types of sheep, kangaroos and wallabies, turkeys, ducks, two types of camels, sulcatta tortoises, capybaras, and Flemish giant rabbits! You can get a close-up experience with the animals by hand-feeding them. Grain is for sale at the boutique.

They even offer special programs like Become a Jr Farmer for the Day and Alpaca & Goat Yoga.

The boutique has unique, one-of-a-kind gifts and souvenirs that you will love. They have socks, hats, scarves, clothing, and blankets made from alpaca fibers, some from right there on the farm. They also have home goods, beauty items, and toys, like Alpaca-opoly.
