Ghostly Manor Thrill Center is open year-round with fun and games for all ages, including XD 4D theater, laser maze, escape room, VR gaming, bounce houses, and an open play area.

Kalahari Resort

Kalahari Resort is the largest indoor water park in the country and is based in Sandusky. Facilities include a spa for adults only, a lazy river, a toddler play area, a surf simulator, and a swim-up bar. There is also an arcade, an escape room, and a 7-D theater.

The train’s vintage coaches are decorated for the season, and storytellers read the story aloud.

The journey staff are all volunteers who dress in costume, sing, dance, lead limbo contests, and more.

Elves entertain guests with games and activities, and a beverage and cookies are served, made by Mrs. Claus.

When the train arrives at the North Pole, guests will see Santa in his workshop through the train window. Once onboard, Santa will visit the children and also gift them all a jingle bell from the reindeer harnesses.

If you can hear the bell ring, you are a true believer!

Almost everybody comes in matching Christmas pyjamas!

We definitely recommend that guests watch the movie before their journey. Songs and dances will then be recognizable.

Times and Seating on the Polar Express

Polar Express train rides run from early December for two weeks on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Tickets sell out quickly and are normally available from late September.

Available seating is: Coach, Deluxe, First Class, and First Class Compartment.

We enjoyed the compartment, which was our own little room on the train. We had our own volunteer who read the story, we had a couch, two chairs, and a private visit from Santa. There were two windows in the compartment to view the Christmas village from the train. This is a great option for children/adults who do not like crowds or get overwhelmed or overstimulated easily. We took a family member with special needs, and this was perfect. 

If you want to stay overnight, the Pullman Bed & Breakfast is a restored vintage sleeper car.

There is usually a sales shop open across from the depot, which has some limited food and specialty items to purchase to remember your experience.

The Dennison Railroad Depot has events and attractions throughout the year. Visitors can call into the Depot Museum and Panhandle Theater, explore unique train cars, and buy a souvenir at the Whistle Stop Railroad gift shop.

The Dayton Air Force Museum collects, researches, conserves, interprets, and presents the history, heritage, and traditions of the US Air Force through exhibits, education, and special programs.

Located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, admission and parking are free, and the museum features more than 350 aerospace vehicles and missiles. There are thousands of artifacts in more than 19 acres of indoor exhibit space.

Attractions include the screening of military-related movies, interactive flight simulators, and VR Transporter – Apollo 11 & Beyond. There is a small charge for each attraction.

The Museum Store has items such as baseball caps, mugs, die-cast toys and collectibles, coins, and model kits.

Food and beverages are available from the Valkyrie Café and the Launchpad Shop ‘n Snack.

The museum hosts events throughout the year, including the Antique Automobile Club of America Grand Nationals (July), Rocket Day (September), and Holidays in the Hangars (November/December).

The museum is open from 9 am to 5 pm, seven days a week. Closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day.

Opened in 2001, Poland Library was designed by Robert A. Mastriana of the 4M company to be a place where the community could gather. It includes both a cafe and a bookstore.

The village of Poland was in mind when the 35,619-square-foot building was planned. Poland’s Greek Revival heritage inspired the library. The magnificent size of the structure was purposely downplayed by creating the appearance of four smaller, gabled houses. This design mimics the architecture and scale seen throughout the community.

You will find the Historic Poland Union Seminary dormitory on the far left of the building. It was originally built in 1846 and has been incorporated into the library, achieving a green architectural goal.

They also met another green architectural goal by reusing the previous library’s old stone window surrounds. Also, note the large number of windows, especially at the back of the building. They let in an enormous amount of natural light. Poland Library has won several awards and has been featured in many national publications.

Day 1: Exploring Portsmouth, Otway Bridge, and Christmas Caves

Morning:

• Start your day with a hearty breakfast at a local diner in Portsmouth. A popular option is Market Street Café.
• After breakfast, head to the Portsmouth Floodwall Murals located along Front Street. These massive outdoor murals depict the history of the area and are a great way to learn about the town’s past.

About Ohio Caverns

The Ohio Caverns were discovered in 1897 by a farmhand who was plowing a field. Since then, they have become a popular attraction for tourists and locals alike.

There are over two miles of passageways that range in depth from 30 feet to 103 feet.

The caverns are open year-round, seven days a week, from 9 am to 5 pm. Visitors can take guided tours to explore the incredible natural wonders hidden beneath the Earth’s surface.

Tours at Ohio Caverns

The guided tours at Ohio Caverns are the best way to explore the stunning underground world of the caverns. There are five tours available. All except one of the tours are led by knowledgeable and experienced guides who provide insights into the geological formations, history, and significance of the caverns.

The tours are designed to be family-friendly and accessible to visitors of all ages and abilities. However, it’s important to note that the tours do involve walking on uneven terrain and stairs, so comfortable shoes are a must.

NOTES: Guided tours can start as frequently as every 10 to 15 minutes at busy times, and there is a limit of 20 people. A discounted combo ticket for both the Natural Wonder Tour and the Historic Tour is available.

Natural Wonder Tour

This summer tour follows a winding path and enters the cavern through a sinkhole entrance. The area this tour covers was discovered in the 1920s. This tour takes approximately 50 minutes.

Historic Tour

The summer Historic Tour begins on a shuttle bus to the original entrance of the caverns, and then this tour takes in parts of the caverns that were opened between 1897 and 1925. This tour takes approximately 50 minutes.

Limestone Tour

• Wheelchair and stroller-friendly

This summer tour caters to visitors with limited mobility. It follows a winding path to the top of the sinkhole entrance and then takes a short loop inside the cavern. This tour takes 25 minutes.

Winter Tour

This tour includes highlights of the Natural Wonder and Historic Tours, as well as an extra section that does not feature in any summer tours. This tour takes approximately 50 minutes.

Tree Tour

• Wheelchair and stroller-friendly

This is a year-round, self-guided tour of the grounds around the Ohio Caverns. Tree tour maps are available at the ticket counter. Each tree in the park has a sign with a fact about that tree. Some of the trees you will see in the park are Eastern Red Cedar, Sassafras, Pawpaw, Norway Spruce, Ohio Buckeye, and London Planetree.

Crystal King at Ohio Caverns

One of the most impressive features of the Ohio Caverns is the Crystal King. A massive column of sparkling crystals that stands over 5 feet tall. Other notable formations include stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstones, which form over millions of years as water seeps through the limestone rock and leaves behind mineral deposits.

Activities and Facilities

In addition to the guided tours of the caverns, there are several other activities that visitors can enjoy at Ohio Caverns. Here are some of the most popular ones:

Gem Mining

At the sluice, visitors can purchase bags of dirt containing rough gemstones and fossils, which they can sift through to find treasures to take home.

Gift Shop

The Caverns’ gift shop offers a wide variety of unique souvenirs. Including jewelry made from gemstones found in the caverns, books about Ohio’s geology, and other memorabilia.

Picnic Area

There is a designated picnic area where visitors can enjoy a meal or snack before or after their tour. The area has picnic tables, grills, as well as a playground for children.

Educational Programs

Ohio Caverns also offers educational programs for school groups, scouts, and other organizations. These programs teach visitors about geology, conservation, and environmental science in a fun and engaging way.

You can pick up a ‘passport’ at any of the four caves involved, which will be stamped at each cave you visit. If you visit them all you will receive an ‘Ohio Cave Trail’ T-Shirt. The four caves are:
