About State Parks in Central Ohio

All state parks in Ohio are maintained by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). They are also all free to enter, with no parking fees. Across the state, parks vary greatly in their landscape, facilities, and activities. The state parks in central Ohio are often found in urban areas.

Blacklick Woods Metro Park is owned and managed by Columbus & Franklin County Metro Parks.

At Blacklick Woods, visitors can enjoy woods, fields, seasonal swamp ponds, a small prairie, and a golf course.

Activities and Facilities

With plenty of activities for the whole family to enjoy, Blacklick Woods is an ideal day out for all seasons.

Canopy Walk

The canopy walk is 40 feet high and loops for an eighth of a mile through the tree canopy. From the canopy, visitors will get amazing views of the surrounding beech-maple forest and parkland, and it is great for birding.

An elevator makes this boarded canopy walk ideal for wheelchairs and strollers.

Golfing

There are two challenging courses at Blacklick Woods: The Championship Course has a traditional layout with tree-lined fairways and quality putting surfaces. The Learning Course is perfect for beginners and families.

There is a state-of-the-art practice area and a full-service driving range. A 30,000 square foot practice green has three bunkers and a 3-hole practice course.

There are five reservable and two non-reservable shelters at Blacklick Woods.

Reservable Shelters:

• Butternut: Holds 100 people, with a kitchen, electricity, charcoal grills, play area, and restrooms
• Buttonbush: Holds 100 people, with a kitchen, electricity, charcoal grills, a play area, and restrooms
• Sassafras: Holds 64 people, with grills, electricity, a water fountain, a playfield, and restrooms
• Walnut: Holds 80 people, with grills, electricity, a water fountain, a playfield, and restrooms
• Beech-Maple Lodge: Holds 72 people with heating and air conditioning, a full kitchen, a gas fireplace, a large meeting room, WiFi, and restrooms.

Non-Reservable Shelters:

• Ash Grove Picnic Area has three shelters, grills, picnic tables, a playground, a playfield, and restrooms.
• Meadows Picnic Area has eight shelters with grills, picnic tables, playground equipment, a playfield, and restrooms.

More Activities

The Nature Center features exhibits of local and natural history. There are observation windows to view the wildlife.

A 54-acre swamp preserve features wetlands and a wide variety of trees and shrubs.

A sledding hill at the golf course is available when the weather permits.

Octagon Earthworks is comprised of two geometric enclosures featuring a circle enclosing 20 acres and an octagon enclosing 50 acres. The walls of each enclosure reach eye level.

The Hopewell culture was responsible for creating the Newark Earthworks.

Octagon Earthworks is part of the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks, which is Ohio’s first UNESCO World Heritage site.

As there has been little investigative archaeological work carried out at Octagon Earthworks, historians and researchers have their beliefs about these mounds. Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks are looking forward to having archaeological digs carried out in the future.

About Morel Mushrooms

Morel mushrooms are not to everyone’s taste, they have an earthy, nutty flavor. But this variety is a premium find if you are a keen mushroom hunter!

The season is between four and six weeks, typically between March and May. There are four types of Morel mushrooms, the black Morel, the gray Morel, the yellow Morel, and the Bigfoots. Bigfoots are very rare and are up to 10 times the size of the other Morels. They appear late in the season.

Morel mushroom season starts in the south of Ohio and works its way north, so if you want to ‘chase Morels’, start in the south and move northward each week.

The best places to find Morels are at the base of dead trees, particularly ash and elm, under or beside fallen trees, under bark, and where there has been fire or flood.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources has produced a series of four videos about Morel Mushrooms, from finding them to cooking them. Each one is shown below with the main points listed after the video.

Where to Find Morels and Identification

Main Points

• Normally associated with ash trees and elm trees, particularly dead ones. Also look at the bases of apple trees and Tulip Poplars.
• Beware of False Morels – they are poisonous! When you get your morels home, be sure to cut them lengthwise and make sure they are hollow in the middle.

Mushroom Hunting Tips

Main Points

• The date for Morel hunting is less important than what is in flower. When Redbuds, Violets, and Trilliums are in bloom, the mushrooms will be in peak season.
• It’s a good idea to wear long pants as you may encounter poison ivy, bugs, and/or snakes.
• Carry two bags with you. One is for morels you are sure of, and the other is for those that you’re not certain about, to keep them separate. The bags should be made of mesh (like onion bags) so the spores can fall through to the forest floor.

Finding and Picking Morels

Main Points

• Scan the area you are hunting in. If you spot a fallen tree, take a look. If nothing is immediately obvious, use a walking stick to gently move the leaves around to see if there are any mushrooms. If you find one, there will almost certainly be more.
• To pick the mushroom, pinch the base so that you don’t disturb the root and everything that is underground.
• Never ask another mushroom hunter where they found their hoard – they won’t tell you and it’s considered poor etiquette!

Preparing and Cooking Morels

Main Points

• Check your mushrooms are real and not false Morels. The cap should be attached to the stem all around, it doesn’t hang like a bell on the stem. Cut the mushroom lengthwise and make sure it is hollow. False Morels have white fibers along the center. ‘If it’s not hollow, don’t swallow!’
• To clean the mushrooms, use a spray bottle and spray over a bowl. You can then take the bowl of water that now has spores in it and pour it at the base of a tree in your yard, or a nearby tree if possible – you never know, you may have your own crop next year!
• There are many recipes out there for cooking Morels, such as this air fryer method. The mushrooms in this recipe are stuffed and breaded.

Morel Mushroom Hunting in State Parks

Many of Ohio’s State Parks, State Forests, and State Wildlife Areas allow mushroom hunting, but there are rules so you will need to contact the park office. One rule that applies to all parks is that you must stay on the trail, off-trail collecting is prohibited.

Many National Parks do not permit mushroom hunting. It is important to check with the park office if you wish to look for Morels in any of these parks.

Inn at Cedar Falls

Located in Blacklick Woods Metro Park in Reynoldsburg, central Ohio, the canopy walk is constructed with more than 250 telephone poles supporting the structure for its one-eighth of a mile length.

There are 72 steps on a zigzag staircase to get to the boardwalk, but there is also a tower with an elevator, making it ADA accessible. Another 27 steps will take visitors to an observation deck 55 feet above ground level.

Blacklick Woods Canopy Walk affords amazing views of beech-maple forest and parkland. Get up close to the birds, including Blue-Headed Vireo, Blackburnian Warbler, and Red-Bellied Woodpecker. Special bird feeders keep the birds interested in the area.

Let the kids play, or simply relax on the hammock-style giant cargo net that can host up to five people at a time.

There are three rope bridges for adventurous kids and adults, a fireman’s pole, and a fun treehouse to play in.

The canopy walk is open every day of the year with occasional closures for maintenance and cleaning. It is completely free to use.

About Apple Picking in Ohio

The apple picking season is typically from early to mid-September, to early October. The orchards announce their start dates on their website or social media pages. Some of the busier orchards require reservations, so check out their website before you head out.

The majority of orchards have different varieties of apples available to purchase year-round, as well as other fruits and vegetables. Some have bakeries, some have farm market stores with homemade products. These orchards and farms are worth a visit any time of year when they are open, not just for the apple-picking season!

Quarry Hill Orchards

Quarry Hill Orchards in Berlin Heights offer summer and fall you-pick. Apples are usually available from August to late October. Summer fruits that you can pick are cherries, raspberries, and peaches. Quarry Hill hosts many events throughout the year, details of which are available on their website and social media pages. Johnston Fruit Farms

At Johnston Fruit Farms in Swanton, you can pick your own apples and pumpkins in the fall, and strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries in the summer. You can also pick flowers at this farm. Hidden Hills Orchard

Hidden Hills Orchard in Marietta grows a wide variety of apples. Their six U-pick varieties are Buckeye Gala, Honeycrisp, Golden Delicious, Enterprise, Cameo, and Gold Rush. Hidden Hills produces an award-winning apple cider on-site. The orchard also grows cherries and peaches that are sold locally.

Fuhrmann Orchards

Fuhrmann Orchards offered you-pick apples for the first time in 2024. Early Fuji is the first of five varieties ready for picking in early September. The others are Golden Delicious (mid to late September), RubyRush (late September), Rosalee (early October), and GoldRush (late October to early November).

The Orchards grow 31 varieties of apples, there is an online chart so you can see when each variety is ready to purchase. Check the Facebook page for the you-pick availability.

Fuhrmann’s also have a sunflower field, you-pick pumpkins, as well as a wide variety of fruit and vegetables for sale. There is also an annual Apple Fest in October.
