The Great Mohican Pow-Wow is held at the Mohican Reservation Campgrounds in Loudonville in September. All things Native American are celebrated here.

At this festival, visitors can see tomahawk throwing, Aztec fire dancers, fire-starting demonstrations, a storyteller, and more.

There is live music and dancing troops throughout the festival. Artisans display and sell their work, including antler works, basket weaving, feather working, knife making, pottery, silversmithing, wood & bone carving, and more.

• Sunday: 10 am – 6 pm

The Mohican Bluegrass Festival is an outdoor music extravaganza. Venture into the Mohican Valley along the Mohican River to enjoy a full line-up of Bluegrass artists.

Picnic tables and benches are available at the Grand Log stage area, but visitors are advised to bring lawn chairs for comfort.

Food and craft vendors will keep the hungry shoppers happy.

Parking is free, but there is an admission charge, payable online or at the gate. A three-day ticket is available.

• Thursday: 3 pm – 10 pm
• Friday: 2 pm – 11 pm
• Saturday: Noon – 11 pm

Although all artists will perform twice in one day, no artist will perform on more than one day.

About Amish Country

The Amish population in Ohio is around 84,000 and is second only to Pennsylvania in the US. Holmes County is home to around 39,500 of those people, making it the largest Amish community in the world. Amish Country spreads into Tuscarawas County, Trumbull County, and Geauga County, too. The cities with the most things to do are Millersburg, Berlin, and Sugarcreek. Other towns include Walnut Creek, Fredericksburg, Charm, and Winesburg.

The Ohio Amish community mainly speaks Dutch-Pennsylvanian, which derives from the German language and American English. The ‘Dutch’ comes from the English word that was used in earlier times to describe people of German and Netherlandic origins.

About the Tours

Agriculture and Farming will always be highlighted, showing how the Amish work, farm, raise animals, make money, and do many daily chores without all the modern conveniences.

Shops and Artisan stops are open year-round but are most popular in the fall after harvesting. If you love food, you’ll love this tour!

Wineries are an increasingly popular part of these tours. Look out for Wine Tours on the booking form. This is not part of the Backroads tour, but if you arrive early for your tour, you will be taken to some locations for wine tasting while you wait.

The narrative on these tours focuses on how and when the Amish settled here and why they believe and live as they do.

Backroads Tour

The Backroads tours begin at 2 pm daily, Monday to Saturday. Booking is not necessary, but preference will be given to booked groups. No two tours are the same, the tour is tailored to the people. Whatever you want to see or do will be included if possible. The Artisan stops do not usually take credit cards, so be sure to have cash with you.

Dining Tour

The Dining Tour is basically the same as the Backroads Tour with a meal at an Amish home added.

Do make a reservation to be sure of getting the tour you require when you want it.

Amish Heartland Tours

Amish Heartland Tours offers bus tours of Amish Country. They will arrange a Pizza Meal in an Amish Home, a Meal in an Amish Home, an Amish Farm or Home Tour, or Private Custom Tours. Country Acres Mini Golf

Country Acres Mini Golf has two 18-hole courses. The Barn is perfect for beginner and intermediate players looking for fun with just a little challenge thrown in. The Bridge will test the skills of the best players! It features a roaming water feature, a covered bridge, elevation changes, a waterfall, and unexpected obstacles.

Amish and Mennonite Heritage Center

The Amish and Mennonite Heritage Center is home to the Behalt Cyclorama, one of only four cycloramas in the US. Behalt is a 10-foot-tall, 265-foot-long cyclorama, or mural-in-the-round. It tells the history of the Amish people from 1525. 30-minute guided tours are available here.

In 1978, Heinz Gaugel began work on the cyclorama with the intention of relating the reasons why the Amish live the way they do. In 1988, the Mennonite Information Center (the original name of the Amish and Mennonite Heritage Center) purchased the painting with about 100 feet of it completed.

Visitors were able to watch Heinz paint until 1992 when the work was completed.

In 1993, Heinz Gaugel created ‘Immigrants’ Arrival in the New World’ in sgraffito on an external wall of the Mural Hall. Sgraffito is a technique of layering contrasting colored plaster, then the image is achieved by scratching to produce a drawing. Although this technique has been used in Germany since the 13th century, it is very rarely seen in America.

Amish Country Riding Stables

Amish Country Riding Stables offers guided horseback trail rides through Ohio’s Amish Country. Trail rides are available between May and October each year.

This site also has Guggisberg Swiss Inn and Doughty Glen Winery. This location is an all-in-one luxury getaway destination.

Yoder’s Amish Home

At Yoder’s Amish Home you can take a guided tour and learn about how the Amish live. This is a 30-40 minute tour with knowledgeable local guides. You will visit both homes on the property and the barn.

The barn is the center of an Old Order Amish homestead, housing a range of animals. If you visit in spring when there are newborns, the guides will allow you to hold some of them. Look out for the swallows that nest there too!

This is a good starting point for your Amish County discovery, as it answers a lot of questions that may arise while visiting other attractions.

Victorian House Museum

This 28-room Queen Anne-style home is the Holmes County Historical Society’s museum of Victoriana and Holmes County history. This house was built in 1901 by a Cleveland industrialist, L.H. Brightman, and it has an area of approximately 7,000 square feet. It is a beautiful building with amazing décor and exhibits.

Farmer’s Produce Auction

The Farmer’s Produce Auction is a wholesale market for local farmers to grow and sell their produce. Here you will find sales of livestock, ponies, carriage and tack, draft horses, and anything to do with farming! There are also shows such as the Amish Country Home & Garden Show. This is a very popular and lively place to visit!

Hershberger’s Farm and Bakery

Hershberger’s Farm and Bakery is a very popular destination. It features a bakery, a farm store, a large petting area, a food trailer, and more. The Hershberger’s Fry Pies are a local favorite.

The Farm at Walnut Creek

The Farm at Walnut Creek is home to over 500 animals with species from six of the seven continents. You can see exotic animals such as giraffes, camels, and zebras, along with native species such as horses, llamas, and buffalo. You can view and hand-feed the animals from your car or from a horse-drawn wagon.

The Farm at Walnut Creek is a working Amish farm where you may see planting, plowing, harvesting or other farm work being carried out. You can see canning, quilting, and baking taking place in the non-electric farmhouses.

World’s Largest Cuckoo Clock

Sugarcreek was founded by Swiss settlers, and there remains a huge Swiss influence in this town. The World’s Largest Cuckoo Clock is the most obvious! Right in the middle of the town, this clock strikes every half hour when the cuckoo pops out, then Swiss polka music plays as the band emerges, and a couple dances.

Age of Steam Roundhouse

About Ohio

NTR is located in Bolivar, on the Tuscarawas River. They offer canoeing, kayaking, tubing, camping, fishing, and more. There are three trips available: a 6-mile trip taking around two hours, an 8.5-mile trip taking around three hours, and a 14.5-mile trip taking around six hours.

Trip two can be taken as a two-day trip, as can trip three, where you will canoe 8.5 miles and stay at the campground on day one, then canoe back to the livery on day two.

Mohican Adventures offers two trips, and you can choose from canoes, kayaks, tubes, and rafts. Morgan’s Outdoor Adventures

Canoeing trips start in May of each year after the snow of winter has melted away and the river is a bit more stable. Morgan’s Canoe Livery at Fort Ancient was the first livery on the Little Miami River. This is the only livery that is based in the Fort Ancient Gorge of the Little Miami River.

Canoeing in this area is a real treat. There are amazing hillsides that are packed with lush vegetation and the peace and tranquility is one of the major draws of this area. Springtime is a great time to visit as all the flowers and trees are coming into bloom after the harshness of winter.

This area was also home to the Hopewell Indian Tribe and this tribe was known for building mounds. This is an ideal area to do some camping as well, so guests can come for the day, or have a much longer stay.

Carriage rides are seriously romantic – what a way to be proposed to! I do recommend that you take a carriage ride in any season except summer – some of these places don’t offer carriage rides in summer as it is too difficult for the horses. My opinion is that winter is the best season to take a carriage ride – wrap up in a warm blanket and enjoy the scenery, day or night!

Hemingway’s Cowboy Carriages

If you would like to see Cincinnati’s downtown skyline and lights, then there is no better way than doing it from a horse-drawn carriage. Hemingway’s Cowboy Carriages offer rides daily. These rides can last as long as an hour, or you could opt for a shorter ride that takes around 30 minutes.

The carriage ride will end in the center of Cincinnati, so once you have had your ride, you could go out and do some shopping, or have a bite to eat in a coffee shop or a bar. In the winter months, you could also tie in your carriage ride with some ice skating on the outdoor rink in Fountain Square.

Mel’s Horse Buggy Rides

Mel’s Horse Buggy Rides is a fantastic way of seeing some of Ohio’s famous Amish country. The drivers of the Buggy Rides are very informative about the area, and they are more than happy to answer any questions that you may have.

Ma & Pa’s Gift Shack

A winter trip to Ma and Pa’s gift shack is a must. Ma and Pa’s is located in Burton, Geauga County. There is a huge meadow and a really cute path that has trees on either side. The sleigh ride will take you through the grounds, and as the temperatures will be really cold, you can have a hot drink before the ride begins and again on return to the log cabin that was originally built in the 1820s and relocated to this site.

Guests can also sample some onsite baked goods to have with their warm drink. There is an opportunity to do some shopping as well for items such as food, furniture, and drinks. Ma and Pa’s offer sleigh rides throughout the winter months, weather conditions permitting.

Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center

Spiegel Grove is the 25-acre estate that belonged to President Rutherford Hayes and First Lady Lucy Hayes. The couple were big fans of sleigh rides, and this has been mentioned many times in his diary.

Horse-drawn trolley rides are available in the middle of February, provided that the weather conditions are right. These rides are on a first-come, first-served basis. This estate is really beautiful, and a sleigh ride around the grounds is a day to remember!

About Berlin Ohio

Berlin is one of the oldest villages in Holmes County, dating back to 1816 when the town was designed by John Swigert (sometimes written as Surgert). The design incorporated 108 lots along two streets. The first settler to arrive was from Berlin, Pennsylvania – and so the town was named. Coincidentally, Swigert was originally from Berlin, Germany!

The town grew, and by 1822, there was a school and a post office. There was a mix of religions: Method, Presbyterian, Baptist, and Mennonite. The Amish would arrive much later.

Berlin has more than 60 retail businesses within two miles of the heart of the town, which makes it a great destination for shoppers who can also enjoy the beautiful countryside and the many horse-drawn buggies.

Amish Country Theater

“Hold on to your hats! We’re fixin’ to have some fun” – that is what the Amish Country Theater is all about. The shows are fun for the whole family, from the youngest to the oldest members!

Featuring hilarious characters, ventriloquists, live music, parody songs, comedy magic, and much more, this is good, clean fun for everyone to enjoy.

Make sure you get to see one of these shows if you are in Berlin – you definitely won’t regret it!

The Amish and Mennonite Heritage Center

This is a very different attraction. It is home to a 10-foot by 265-foot circular mural called Behalt – which means ‘to keep, hold, remember’.

This is a unique educational experience that shows the history of the Amish, Mennonites, and Hutterites on this cyclorama – one of only four in North America.

This oil-on-canvas mural illustrates multiple stories within a vast timeline. Learn how the Amish and Mennonites were persecuted before arriving in America, the struggle to live out their beliefs peacefully, and their quest for a simple lifestyle.

A 30-minute tour of the cyclorama illustrates the history from the Amish origins to the present day.

Holmes County Open Air Museum

This museum is located on the grounds of the Inn at Honey Run. Art installations are set within the landscape of forests and hillsides. Showcasing original works from local and regional artists.

This museum trail is open to the general public with an admission fee. There are other walking trails at this location, but you have to stay overnight at the inn to use them.

Berlin Escape Room

It is a great fun activity for the whole family to enjoy. It is a real interactive game where your team has to discover clues, solve puzzles, and overcome challenges to unlock the final door.

You have a choice of rooms to conquer. Panther’s Hollow is based on the real place in Holmes County called Panther’s Hallow. The List is a Christmas-based room where you have to find Santa’s Good List and add your name to it! The Boyd Schoolhouse is an advanced difficulty-level room, and you have 75 minutes to complete it.

You will have to make a reservation to challenge yourself in the Escape Room. They operate in the evenings only and only by appointment. You will be disappointed if you just turn up!

Amish Heartland Tours

This tour company offers bus tours and much more. You can schedule a tour to your own requirements. You can take a half-day, full-day, or multi-day tour, and it can include museums, farm tours, wagon rides, buggy rides, a meal in an Amish house, shopping, theaters, and much more.

These tours are designed to help you understand the Amish way of life and answer questions such as Why don’t the Amish sport a mustache? How can you tell if the Amish are married?
