The Wine and Walleye Festival is held on Bridge Street, in the heart of Historic Ashtabula Harbor, in late July.

This festival celebrates the two things that Ashtabula County is most famous for: wine and fishing.

A fishing tournament with amateur and pro divisions starts on Saturday for the early bird fishermen at 5.30 am.

For the duration of the festival, the Lettie G. Howard schooner will be docked in the harbor, and visitors will be able to sail on her.

The wine tent will be open throughout the festival with wineries such as Hundley Cellars, CLE Urban Winery, and Laurello Vineyards.

Unique vendors, food trucks, and more will be at the street fair.

A lighted boat parade on Saturday evening is followed by a fireworks display.

About Apple Picking in Ohio

The apple picking season is typically from early to mid-September, to early October. The orchards announce their start dates on their website or social media pages. Some of the busier orchards require reservations, so check out their website before you head out.

The majority of orchards have different varieties of apples available to purchase year-round, as well as other fruits and vegetables. Some have bakeries, some have farm market stores with homemade products. These orchards and farms are worth a visit any time of year when they are open, not just for the apple-picking season!

Rittman Orchards

Brant’s Apple Orchard

As well as apple-picking, Brant’s has a bakery and a farm market. There is a picnic area by a pond with fish that apparently love a bite of a donut! The Covered Bridge Playground is fun for the kids. Apple Picking in Northwest Ohio

Quarry Hill Orchards

Quarry Hill Orchards in Berlin Heights offer summer and fall you-pick. Apples are usually available from August to late October. Summer fruits that you can pick are cherries, raspberries, and peaches. Quarry Hill hosts many events throughout the year, details of which are available on their website and social media pages. There is an online shop as well as a farm store.

Johnston Fruit Farms

At Johnston Fruit Farms in Swanton, you can pick your own apples and pumpkins in the fall, and strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries in the summer. You can also pick flowers at this farm. There is a free petting zoo, games, and a sandbox for the children. Johnston’s makes cider in six varieties and you can view the cider mill at work. They also make a wide variety of donuts – fresh daily.

Apple Picking in Southeast Ohio

Hidden Hills Orchard

Hidden Hills Orchard in Marietta grows a wide variety of apples. Their six U-pick varieties are Buckeye Gala, Honeycrisp, Golden Delicious, Enterprise, Cameo, and Gold Rush. Hidden Hills produces an award-winning apple cider on-site. The orchard also grows cherries and peaches that are sold locally.

Fuhrmann Orchards

Fuhrmann Orchards offered you-pick apples for the first time in 2024. Early Fuji is the first of five varieties ready for picking in early September. The others are Golden Delicious (mid to late September), RubyRush (late September), Rosalee (early October), and GoldRush (late October to early November).

The Orchards grow 31 varieties of apples, there is an online chart so you can see when each variety is ready to purchase. Check the Facebook page for the you-pick availability.

Fuhrmann’s also have a sunflower field, you-pick pumpkins, as well as a wide variety of fruit and vegetables for sale. There is also an annual Apple Fest in October.

Peifer Orchards

Peifer Orchards in Yellow Springs offer U-pick throughout the summer and fall, with apples and pumpkins in the fall and blackberries, red raspberries, and black raspberries in the summer. When is the Total Eclipse in Ohio?

Ohio will see the total eclipse on April 8, 2024, between the hours of approximately 3:08 pm and 3:15 pm. The duration will usually be around 2 to 4 minutes. The moon will start to cover the sun at around 1:50 pm and the sun will be completely uncovered by about 4:30 pm.

The last total eclipse seen in Ohio was in 1806, and the next one will be in 2099.

Which Ohio Cities are on the Path of Totality?

The Path of Totality is expected to be about 124 miles wide and will stretch across 13 states, including a line through Ohio from the southwest to the northeast regions.

Cities and regions just outside of this path will experience a partial eclipse, which is still an amazing spectacle!

The list below shows the cities that are on the path of totality, the expected time of total eclipse (EDT) all times are PM, and the expected duration of total eclipse (in minutes and seconds). This list is broken into regions of Ohio, so is not strictly in time order – although each region is.

Eye Protection for the Solar Eclipse

This is a quote from the NASA website about watching a solar eclipse:

When watching a partial or annular solar eclipse directly with your eyes, you must look through safe solar viewing glasses (“eclipse glasses”) or a safe handheld solar viewer at all times. Eclipse glasses are NOT regular sunglasses; regular sunglasses, no matter how dark, are not safe for viewing the Sun.

Do NOT look at the Sun through a camera lens, telescope, binoculars, or any other optical device while wearing eclipse glasses or using a handheld solar viewer — the concentrated solar rays will burn through the filter and cause serious eye injury.

Fun Facts About the 2024 Solar Eclipse

• This will be the first total solar eclipse in the continental U.S. in 7 years.
• A solar eclipse occurs when the Sun, the Moon, and Earth are aligned, or in syzygy.
• A solar eclipse only happens at New Moon, but not at every New Moon.
• Everyone in the continental U.S. will be able to see at least a partial eclipse.
• This eclipse will be the most-viewed ever.
• Totality is safe to look at.

The Next Total Eclipses Worldwide

If you want to chase total eclipses, the next ones that are due in the 2020s are:

• August 12, 2026 – Greenland, Iceland, and Spain
• August 2, 2027 – Spain, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and Somalia.
• July 22, 2028 – Australia and New Zealand.

Spain has the extremely rare bonus of having a total eclipse two years running!

A total solar eclipse will not happen again in Ohio until 2099!

Wonderlight’s Christmas

Wonderlight´s Christmas is one of the best drive-through displays in the central Ohio area, and it is also the largest display. There are over 1 million lights, and they are all synchronized to Christmas music, which you can listen to via your car radio. This is a very popular display, and it can get quite lively as the season progresses.

Butch Bando’s Fantasy of Lights

This is a truly magical display that is located at the Alum Creek State Park Campgrounds. There are many LED displays, and it is not just Christmas displays on show either, there are also displays of sporting events and displays that have an Ohio theme. This is very popular with both locals and people from out of state as well.

Christmas Lights Ohio

Christmas Lights is a drive of 1.5 miles, with over 2 million lights and over 40 individual displays. Tune into the radio and watch the lights move to the music.

This light show is at the Delaware County Fairgrounds, and it opens the day after Thanksgiving to the beginning of January.

Northwest Ohio Drive Through Lights

Upper’s Winter Fantasy of Lights

Upper’s Winter Fantasy of Lights at Harrison Smith Park in Upper Sandusky is a magical light display covering over 33 acres, including illuminated characters and scenes, as well as a festively lit tractor and wagon.

This event is open throughout December, every evening from 6 pm. Before this drive-through is open to cars, you can walk through the lights, usually open two or three days in late November.

You can also take a horse-drawn carriage ride through the park. Tickets for this sell quickly, so be sure to make your reservation as soon as possible!

4-H Exchange Club Holiday Light Show

The Van Wert Fairgrounds Christmas Lights are a great way to support the local 4-H club. The Christmas lights display has over 100 different scenes, with Santa visits throughout the month.

Horse-drawn carriage rides are also available on selected dates, and these must be reserved in advance. There is more information available about this great light display on their Facebook page.

Bright Nights

Bright Nights is a gift from Mercy Health to the community, and what a gift it is! The Bright Nights display is in the Allen County Fairgrounds. There are over 80 LED light displays, including lit-up buildings, a light tunnel, and illuminated trees. As you drive through the display, the Lima Symphony Orchestra performs music over the radio.

Christmas Cruise Thru

This Christmas drive-through experience is located at the Defiance County Fairgrounds. This drive-through boasts over 3 million lights, and the length of the drive is 2.5 miles.

On selected weekends, there is also a mini village, reindeer, a visit from Santa, and other seasonal vendors.

Lights on The Lake

A free lakefront drive-thru display in Lorain’s Lakeview Park. The Lights on the Lake experience consists of thousands of lights with classic holiday scenes. Visit with Santa on selected nights in the Sunset Terrace. Enjoy some hot chocolate, cookie decorating, and crafts.

The Lights on the Lake event runs from late November to the end of December, every evening from 5.30 pm to 9 pm.

Ashtabula County’s Lights on the Lake

The Ashtabula County lights are located on the waterfront of Lake Erie. There are over 70 light displays on this drive and it covers over 50 acres of Lakeshore Park. There is a section that moves to the music and a variety of effects that add to the display.

This event is open on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from late November to the end of December from 6 pm to 9 pm.

Journey Borealis

Journey Borealis (previously Holiday Lights on the Hill) is an impressive display of lights in Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park which is over 300 acres. The Christmas Lights drive is over 2 miles long.

Light up Middletown

This is a fabulous driving tour that will take guests through different types of lights and displays. There is also a festive tunnel of twinkling lights, and this is a favorite with younger children. This is a great display, and it does not get too busy, so it is an ideal place to visit.

Holiday in Lights at Armco Park

A drive through Armco Park in Warren County is a great way to see a spectacular display in the comfort of your car.

The drive is over a mile long and there are over 250 displays on this drive, so there is lots to see. You can also purchase special glasses at the gates that let visitors see the lights from a different perspective.

Christmas Glow at Land of Illusion

Christmas Glow is the largest Christmas lights drive-through event in Southwest Ohio. There are over 4 million lights, and the length of the drive is over 2 miles.

As well as the drive-through tour, there is also a petting zoo, and guests can also visit Santa’s workshop. There is an impressive more than 40-foot-tall Christmas Tree, where guests can relax with a hot drink and keep warm at the gas fire pit.

Holiday Lights at Lost Creek Reserve

Lost Creek Reserve is a driving tour that is over a mile long. It has over 60 light displays that are very charming. Visitors will not only drive down a road, but they will also drive through the woods, and the historic Knoop Homestead is also adorned with festive lights.

Parklights at Caesar Ford Park

A drive through Caesar Ford Park’s Winter Wonderland is a treat for all the family. The whole drive is full of lights, and there is a chance to go through the North Pole and wave to Santa.

There is also a Winter Farm, Festive Festival, Winter Wonderland, and North Pole Car Show.

The Christmas Ranch

The Christmas Ranch is a great place to visit as the driving tour is amazing. This is a drive through over a mile of Christmas wonderland, with over 1 million twinkling lights that are synchronized to music.

Guernsey County Courthouse

The Guernsey County Courthouse in the Dickens Victorian Village puts on a nice Christmas lights display. The lights also run with the various Christmas music that is played. There is a large Christmas tree in the middle of the display, and there are also over 60 animated displays and over 55,000 lights. There is a free light show that goes on for 12 minutes and is great fun.

About Brant’s Apple Orchard

The Simmons family was the first to plant an orchard on this site in 1980, when they grew 13 apple varieties.

In the early 1990s, the property was purchased by Roy & Debbie Brant, who expanded the orchard by adding a bakery and farm market. 

In 2014, the Diehl family purchased the orchard as the Brants wanted to retire. The Diehls have worked hard to expand the orchard, now growing 22 varieties on more than 4,500 trees. They have included a playground, added walking trails, and more seating areas.

You can enjoy the pick-your-own program at Brant’s Apple Orchard. They have a huge variety of apples, Asian pears, and table grapes.

In Brant’s Apple Orchard market, you can purchase homemade chocolate and caramel apples, locally sourced honey and maple syrups, locally grown corn, and chestnuts!

Pick Your Own Apples

Pick your own apples typically starts early to mid-September each year. The varieties you can pick include Cortland, Jonathan, Empire, and Honeycrisp. Up-to-date information is always available on their Facebook page.

There is an online Apple Guide with more information about each variety. Taste samples are always available in the market, so you can try before you buy.

Asian Pears and Table Grapes

Asian Pears look like russet-colored apples. They are native to Southeast Asia, and this is the only place in northeast Ohio that grows them. There are three varieties: Chojuro – small and sweet, available throughout September. Nitaka – mild flavor, medium size, harvested mid-September. Olympic – the largest variety, mild and juicy, available mid to late September. Tasting is available in the market.

There are six varieties of Table Grapes grown here: Marquis – sweet, pale yellow. Vanessa – sweet, deep red. Himrod – sweet, golden yellow. Mars – intense flavor, blue. Glenora – sweet and spicy, dark blue. Einset – unique strawberry-like flavor, red.

The Market

When you enter the market, you will see huge bins of apple varieties for sale. You can select your own apples and mix and match the varieties. Samples of all homegrown produce are available – just ask a member of staff!

At Brant’s Apple Orchard market, you can find homegrown and locally grown produce, such as honey, jams and jellies, apple and pumpkin butters, Maple Syrup and other flavored syrups, homemade chocolates and caramel apples, and much more.

Brant’s also carries locally grown corn, peaches, pumpkins, and chestnuts.

You can also purchase items such as apple peelers, slicers, knives, cookbooks, gift baskets, and child-friendly items as gifts.

Do not forget to check out the cider, cider slushies, and hot or cold creamy caramel cider drinks. When grapes are in season, the sweet grape slushies are not to be missed!

The Bakery

The bakery at Brant’s Apple Orchard is well-known for its Apple Cider Donuts! At times, they make more than 6,000 of these popular delights in a single day! There are often other donuts available, depending on the seasonal availability and the creativity of the baker!

Their other baked goodies include Apple, Pumpkin, Grape, and Asian Pear Pies, Cookies, Scones, Apple Turnovers, Cinnamon Twists, Fresh Baked Breads, and much more.

You can also enjoy lunch from the bakery, sitting in one of the picnic areas located within the grounds. The menu includes sandwiches, soups, breads, and wrap trays. Check out the online menu for more information.

Events and Activities

You are guaranteed fantastic, fun-filled family entertainment at Brant’s Apple Orchard! Take their Hayrides, for example. Each ride lasts 20-30 minutes (weather permitting, of course!) and will be narrated by the owner or a knowledgeable member of staff. Travel through the vineyards and learn about the orchard’s history. You can even learn about how apples are grown!

There are over 125 covered bridges remaining in Ohio, there were once 3,500 of them! The idea of covering bridges was to protect the woodwork of the bridge against the weather.

Many of the original bridges have been destroyed, or neglected so badly that renovation was impossible. However, some of these badly neglected bridges have been faithfully reconstructed – usually in the same place, but sometimes they are moved.

Half of the counties of Ohio have at least one bridge, and Ashtabula County has the most covered bridges, with 17.

Smolen Gulf Bridge

Smolen Gulf Bridge is the longest covered bridge not just in Ohio, but in the entire United States. This impressive bridge has a span of 613 feet. It is over 90 ft above the gulf area of the Ashtabula River, so it has an impressive drop as well. Visitors can drive across this bridge, but it is best to see it when parked.

State Road Covered Bridge

If you want to visit a covered bridge surrounded by natural beauty, this is the bridge for you. The State Road Covered Bridge is situated in the middle of a gorgeous park with lots of beautiful trees and wildlife. You can drive over this bridge, and there is parking available also. Visitors also have access to the creek below the bridge.

Newton Falls Bridge

This is the second oldest covered bridge in Ohio and the last surviving covered bridge in Trumbull County. It was built in 1831, and the design of this bridge is the lattice style. This design and construction method was extremely popular in the Victorian era.

Benetka Road Covered Bridge

The Benetka Road Covered Bridge is a stunning structure, constructed over 120 years ago in the 1890s. This bridge has been a local favorite with visitors for years and was last renovated in the mid-1980s. The span of this bridge is over 135 feet, so it is a gentle walk, or you can drive over it.

Windsor Mills Covered Bridge

Windsor Mills Bridge is a historic landmark. This bridge spans Phelps Creek. It is a nice bridge, painted a yellow color that fits in with its surroundings.

Windsor Mills Covered Bridge, built in 1867, has two center supports, one of locally quarried sandstone and the other of creek stone.

Pottersburg Covered Bridge

The Pottersburg Bridge also goes by the name of the Upper Darby Bridge. This bright red bridge was used to cross the Big Darby Creek when it was first built in the 1930s. It was moved to its current location in 2006 and was renovated at the same time. This is a very pretty bridge that is easy to park by. Visitors often stop here to go on walks, picnic, and also take photos.

Netcher Road Covered Bridge

This is a nice bridge that is based on the old Neo-Victorian design. This bridge is 110 feet long and over 22 feet wide, and you can drive over it. The bridge goes over Mill Creek in Jefferson Township. It features a timber arch with inverted Haupt walls

Eldean Covered Bridge

This historic bridge, built in 1860, is in Troy, Ohio, and spans the Great Miami River. This is quite a long bridge at over 220 feet. The bridge has a bike path, and there is parking, a port-a-potty, and a picnic shelter. Hiking is also available, as there is beautiful countryside around this bridge.

Lanterman’s Mill Covered Bridge

Lanterman´s Mill Bridge was built in 1989. Lanterman’s Mill is a beautiful place. The current bridge crosses Mill Creek near the mill and has a span of 96 feet.

There has been a bridge here since the 1800s, used by the locals when they were bringing their grain to the mill.

Spain Creek Covered Bridge

This is one of the shorter covered bridges that can be found in Ohio as it is only 64 feet long. This bridge is a historical bridge, built in the 1870s. It crosses Spain Creek, which gives it its name.

It is a pretty bridge and it is quiet as well, so it is a perfectly peaceful location for a visit.

Everett Covered Bridge

The original Everett Bridge was destroyed in 1975. This current bridge was completed in 1986. It is a bright red color, so you will certainly not miss it. There are facilities available such as restrooms, guided trails, and a parking lot. This is the only remaining covered bridge in Summit County

Harpersfield Covered Bridge

The Harpersfield Bridge, constructed in 1868, is one of the longest covered bridges in Ohio. It has a span of 228 feet and spans the Grand River. The bridge is next door to the Harpersfield Covered Bridge Metropark, where there are facilities available such as restrooms and places to have picnics. Harpersfield also has a nice Winery.

Parker Bridge

Parker Bridge is a Howe truss covered bridge built by J.C. Davis in 1873. The bridge is in Upper Sandusky, northwest Ohio. The 182-foot-long bridge continued to transport people and vehicles across the Sandusky River for 118 years, until it suffered a fire in 1991. The ‘Cross the Bridge Again’ Committee restored the bridge in 1993, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

Visitors can still walk or drive across the wooden bridge, enjoying its stunning rural surroundings.

About Lake Erie Lighthouses

The lighthouses on Lake Erie are a bit of a mixture. For example, some of these lighthouses can be visited both inside and outside. A few are not for visiting inside, however, they can provide breathtaking photographic opportunities. Ohio’s lighthouses have been keeping people safe and secure on the lake for many years.

All of the lighthouses are on Lake Erie, one of the Great Lakes! Not only can you see the lighthouses by land but you can also see them from the lake! Ashtabula Lighthouse

This beautiful lighthouse was the last manned lighthouse on any of the Great Lakes. This lighthouse was manned by the US Coastguard until 1973. The lighthouse is located on the northern end of Ashtabula Harbor’s west breakwater. Different types of lighthouses have stood in this area since the 1830s. The current lighthouse was built in 1905 and it was also expanded and moved in 1916. Visitors can explore the local area in more detail and visit the Ashtabula Maritime And Surface Transportation Museum. The museum was originally the house of the lighthouse keeper.

The lighthouse is only accessible by boat.

Cleveland Harbor West Pierhead Lighthouse

The Cleveland Harbor West Pierhead Lighthouse is located just north of the Cuyahoga River. This lighthouse has been in operation since 1911, however, there has been a signal station in this area since the early 1830s. This is a unique lighthouse as it has a peculiar spark-plug style design. As this lighthouse is based right on the shores of Lake Erie, it is common to see the icy waves blast against the lighthouse and freeze in the winter months. Photographers from miles around come to visit this lighthouse and take some fantastic snaps. The West Pierhead lighthouse initially stood alone, but as time went on, a fog signal building was also constructed next to it in 1916.

Conneaut West Breakwater Lighthouse

This lighthouse is a black and white steel lighthouse constructed in 1936. This current structure has replaced a series of structures built in this location. This lighthouse was bought by a private owner in 2011 and has remained privately owned ever since. As this is a private lighthouse, it is not open for visits or tours.

Fairport Harbor West Breakwater Lighthouse

This lighthouse has a 42-foot tower and is located at the mouth of the Grand River. It was built in 1925 to replace another historic lighthouse that is still standing today, however, it has long since been decommissioned. Visitors can walk on the breakwaters and take in some lovely views.

Fairport Harbor Marine Museum and Lighthouse

This lighthouse and Museum is a 40-minute drive East of Cleveland. The 60-foot-tall lighthouse was built in 1871, replacing the original structure that had stood in this place. Visitors can climb to the top of this lighthouse to enjoy some amazing views. There are over 70 stairs to the top.

There is also a museum founded at the end of WWII in 1945 and was at the time of its founding, the only Museum on the Great Lakes.  The Museum has Native Indian artifacts on show found in this area in the early 1900s. Of course, there are also nautical artifacts in the museum. Outside the Museum is the main mast of the USS Michigan, the US Navy’s first iron-hulled ship.

South Bass Island Lighthouse

This lighthouse was built in 1897 in the southwest area of South Bass Island, also not much has changed with this lighthouse since its construction. Visitors can tour the grounds in daylight hours all year round. The lighthouse itself is used by Ohio State University and tours are only offered periodically. When tours do take place, visitors can learn about the history of the island and climb the tower stairs for a view of Put-in-Bay and the surrounding waters of Lake Erie.

Huron Harbor Lighthouse

The Huron Harbor Lighthouse is at the end of North Main Street in Huron Park and it was built in 1939. It stands alongside a stunning pier and this offers some of the best views of Lake Erie. The pier is a mile long and is open to the general public. This pier is a popular fishing location and is also an ideal photography spot, as well as a good birdwatching outlook.

Toledo Harbor Lighthouse

The Toledo Harbor lighthouse is situated 5 miles north of Maumee Bay State Park. The lighthouse sits on a 20-foot-deep stone crib in Lake Erie. This lighthouse was opened in 1904 and it was manned by the US Coast Guard until the mid-1960s. The ownership of the site was transferred from the Federal Government to the Toledo Lighthouse Preservation Society in the early 2000s. This organization has been raising money since it acquired the lighthouse for renovation. Visitors who want a close-up view of the lighthouse will need to rent a boat as this lighthouse is based offshore.

Lorain Harbor Lighthouse

Lorain Harbor Lighthouse is known as the “Jewel of the Port” as it is a gorgeous focal point. This lighthouse was completed in 1919. The lighthouse is unusual, as it is lit at the base of the lighthouse and not at the top like most other lighthouses. This lighthouse was decommissioned in the late 1970s and was threatened with demolition. A local organization bought the deeds to the lighthouse and it was saved. It has taken the organization a lot of time and effort to renovate this lighthouse. The lighthouse hosts some events and in the summer months, visitors can take a boat across to the lighthouse.

Port Clinton Lighthouse

This is a pepperpot light and is only 20-foot tall. This Pepperpot lighthouse stands on the shore next to Port Clinton waterworks. This lighthouse was built towards the end of Victorian times in 1896. In the 1950s, a second lighthouse was built and the US Coastguard wanted to demolish it. A local Marina owner bought the structure and decided to relocate it to his property and it was there for over 50 years. In 2012, the Port Clinton Lighthouse Conservancy moved the structure to storage. It has since been restored and moved to the Waterworks parks.

Marblehead Lighthouse

The Marblehead Lighthouse has been helping sailors on Lake Erie since 1822. This 200-year-old lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse on the Great Lakes. This is also one of the very few lighthouses in Ohio that allow visitors to ascend to the top. Those who take the guided tour can climb the 77 stairs to the top. The views at the top are delightful and it is possible to see Cedar Point and South Bass Island.

There are two museums at this lighthouse. The Keeper’s House offers visitors a chance to learn about local history, and the Marblehead Room talks about local life. Visitors can also observe the replica of the 1876 US lifesaving station. The museum also has a restored lifesaving boat. Outside the museum is also a small grassy area where people can take food and drinks.

Vermilion Lighthouse

The city of Vermilion was once known as the “Village of Lake Captains”. This area has historic homes that were used by the boating community which are still standing today. The Vermilion lighthouse pays tribute to the area. The current structure is a replica of the original lighthouse that stood in this area. The original was built in 1877 and it was removed in 1929. The city was then without any form of lighthouse for a long time. The local community raised enough money to build a replica in 1991. This replica is fully operational and it is a tribute to the local area, as well as used as a navigational tool.

About Beaches in Ohio

Ohio is a long way from the ocean, but there are some beautiful beaches in Ohio. Some of these beaches are set next to Lake Erie, and some others are set on one of Ohio’s many other lakes. Some of these lakes allow boating.  Below we are going to talk about a few of the many beaches that are in Ohio. So get your towel, head to the Beach, and have fun!

Alum Creek State Park

Alum Creek State Park is in Delaware. This beach is one of the largest inland beaches in Ohio at over 3,000 feet long. There are plenty of amenities available for visitors, including restrooms, shower facilities, changing areas, sports facilities, and vendors. The beach can only be visited during daylight hours. Pets are not allowed on the swimming beaches, but pets are allowed at the dog park. There is a beach provided just for dogs too, and admission is free!

Atwood Lake Beach Park

Atwood Lake is a privately owned park. Visitors can relax and swim on this beach. This is a sandy, safe beach. Amenities include a concession stand, changing rooms with wash facilities, and vending machines. The price of admission includes access to the beach, trails, picnic areas, and various activities.

Catawba Island State Park

Catawba Island State Park is one of 5 Lake Erie Island parks.  This is one of the smaller beaches, but it is also a fantastic place to quietly relax and indulge in some fishing. You can also boat here and enjoy the views. This park offers a cobblestone beach, and visitors have the opportunity to launch canoes and kayaks here.

The amenities include picnic areas, a fishing pier, and four launch ramps.  Admission to this park is free.

Conneaut Township Park

Conneaut Township Park is a large 60-acre park on the shores of Lake Erie. The beach is a quarter of a mile long and has a wonderfully long boardwalk. This boardwalk connects the beach to the parking areas and outdoor activity areas. This is ideal for people who have limited mobility and for strollers. 

This park also hosts events. A popular event that takes place here is the D-Day re-enactment in September. Admission is free.

Euclid Beach Park

Euclid Beach Park is part of the Cleveland Metroparks Euclid Creek Reservation. This park offers 650 feet of swimming beach. There are different facilities open within this park as well, including picnic areas, and during the summer months, there is a lifeguard on duty.

Visitors also have the opportunity to take in the beautiful views from the park’s observation pier. The park also offers hiking, fishing, biking, and other outdoor activities. Admission to this park is free.

Fairport Harbor Lakefront Park

Fairport Harbor Beach was once featured in Coastal Living Magazine as it was voted Ohio’s best and grooviest beach. This Lake Erie beach offers gorgeous views and an array of activities.

This is a sandy beach that has a gentle slope to the waterfront. Facilities on offer include a playground, restrooms, a boardwalk, and trails.

Headlands Beach State Park

Headlands Beach is the largest sand beach in Ohio. This beach is 35 acres and offers stunning views of the local area. The beach also offers a concession stand, a wheelchair and stroller-friendly boardwalk, and restrooms. Lifeguards are also on duty in the summer months. Visitors can also enjoy biking, hiking, fishing, and beach glass hunting. The park is open from sunrise until sunset. Admission to this park is free.

Kelleys Island State Park Beach

This wonderful 150-foot beach is situated on the North Bay of Kelleys Island. This is a sandy beach and is perfect for families to swim, relax, and enjoy access to the lake whilst visiting the Island. As well as swimming, camping, walking, and hiking trails are available. Fishing is also permitted, and there is a boat ramp and kayak launch. Rentals are available in the summer months. Admission to this park is free.

Maumee Bay State Park

This fantastic park is in Toledo and consists of over 1,300 acres. This park has two beaches. One of the beaches is on Lake Erie, and the other is on a large, calm, inland lake. Activities available here include kayaking, sailing, biking, and walking. Modern restrooms are also available.

The beach and park also have a concession stand. The park has a golf course, lodge stays, camping, and over 2 miles of boardwalks. Admission to the park is free.

Nickel Plate Beach

This beach is located just under 10 miles from Cedar Point Amusement Park. This is a large, sandy beach and it is host to a large range of outdoor activities. There are plenty of amenities including picnic areas, restrooms, changing rooms, and a playground.  Items available to rent include paddleboards, kayaks, and beach gear. There is a daily parking fee. A season parking pass is available.

Tappan Lake Beach Park

This lovely beach is located on the banks of Tappan Lake. There are several marked areas that advise where swimming is allowed. There are plenty of amenities available, including changing rooms, a pavilion, restrooms, and concession stands.

As well as swimming, there are boat rentals, trails, a playground, and outdoor activities available.

Wallace Lake Park Beach

Wallace Lake Beach is a pleasant, tidy sand beach that is located on the large 17-acre park lake. Amenities are available, including picnic areas, concession stands, and restrooms.  Lifeguards are available during the summer season. Wallace Lake Beach is part of the Cleveland Metroparks Mill Stream Reservation. There are also additional facilities available for visitors, including boat rentals, fishing, hiking, and more. Admission to this park is free.

West Branch State Park Beach

West Branch State Park offers a 700-foot sand beach. On the beach, there is a beach house, outdoor showers, picnic tables with grills, and vending facilities. There is also a dog park with a pet-friendly swimming pool, perfect for your furry companions. Admission to this park is free.
