Christmas Tree Festival

The Christmas Tree Festival is held at the Allen County Historical Society and Museum in Lima in early December.

The halls of the Museum will be decked with over 100 decorated trees from community organizations.

Featuring ‘Evergreen’, the talking Christmas tree and tours of the decorated MacDonell House.

There are daily demonstrations in the Log House and activities in the Children’s Discovery Center.

Festival hours:

Wednesday and Thursday: 10 am – 5 pm
Friday: 10 am – 8 pm
Saturday: 10 am – 5 pm
Sunday: Noon – 5 pm

This is a free event, however, donations are welcome.

If you are a tea lover, they have Super Fruit Tea in flavors like Pomegranate Green, Blueberry Green, and Ginger Peach.

You will find a variety of delectable, handcrafted chocolates to choose from, like the Watershed Bourbon Cherry, Sea Salt Caramel, and Pecan Bark to Cherry Cordial, Cashew Wurtle, Coconut Almond Bliss, and Buckeye Caramel Crunch. They have a sugar-free selection, too.

Winans Chocolates also has pastries, seasonal treats, candy, coffee bundles, gift boxes of chocolates, and Winans gear available to purchase.

Ohio is a wonderful state to visit, whether you are from out of state, or you want to discover your home state, this article focuses on some of the best things to do in Ohio.

About Ohio

Ohio has a population of nearly 11.8 million. Its capital and largest city is Columbus, with other large cities Cleveland, Cincinnati, Dayton, Akron, and Toledo.

The nickname of Ohio ‘The Buckeye State’ derives from the buckeye trees that grow along the Ohio River Valley. The small nuts the trees produce resemble the eye of a deer. It is considered that carrying a buckeye nut in your pocket is good luck.

The flag of Ohio was officially adopted in 1902 and is the only state flag that is not rectangular.

The 17th state of America, Ohio was founded in 1803 when the boundaries and the constitution were approved by Thomas Jefferson. However, it was not until 1953 that Ohio was granted statehood and admittance to the union by Dwight D. Eisenhower, although it was backdated.

Ohio was the birthplace of seven US presidents: Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes, James Garfield, Benjamin Harrison, William McKinley, William H. Taft, and Warren G. Harding. This fact has given the state the title of ‘Mother of Presidents’.

Facts About Ohio

Home to several indigenous civilizations, humans have been present in Ohio since as early as 10,000 BCE.
The first Ohio settlement was Marietta in the northwest. It was named after Marie Antoinette of France.
Chillicothe and Zanesville were joint capital cities of Ohio until 1816 when Columbus became the capital.
Orville and Wilbur Wright from Dayton made the first short flights in 1903.
The only state to have an official rock song, ‘Hang on Sloopy’ was designated Ohio’s official song in 1985.
Cedar Point was founded in 1870 and is the second oldest amusement park in the US. Lake Compounce in Connecticut is the oldest.
Ohio has the second largest Amish community in the US, second only to Pennsylvania. There are approximately 40,000 Amish citizens in Ohio.
Ohio gets its name from the Iroquois word Ohi-yo, meaning ‘great river’, ‘good river’, or ‘large creek’.

Famous People from Ohio

Bob Hope, actor and comedian, was born in England but moved to the US when he was four and grew up in Cleveland.
Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, was from Wapakoneta.
Thomas Edison was born in Milan, Ohio in 1847.
Some more famous people from Ohio are Doris Day (Cincinnati), Clark Gable (Cadiz), Dean Martin (Steubenville), Paul Newman (Cleveland), Jack Nicklaus (Columbus), Annie Oakley (Darke County), and Steven Spielberg (Cincinnati).

Ohio State Symbols, etc

The state bird is the Cardinal, which can be found in all 88 counties.
The state tree is the Ohio Buckeye.
The state flower is the Carnation.
The official song of Ohio is called ‘Beautiful Ohio’.
The official state motto of Ohio is ‘With God, all things are possible’.

Easton Town Center

Easton Town Center is more than just a visit to the stores, it is a shopping experience! It was named number one Retail Experience in America by Chain Store Age magazine for three years in a row. Think of a brand, and you will find it in Easton! There are also unique stores and many indoor and outdoor activities.

There are four nearby hotels and any type of dining experience you want. Near the John Glenn Columbus International Airport and only 15 minutes east of downtown Columbus, this is a must-visit destination.

North Market

North Market Farmers Market is the only public market in Columbus. In this covered market visitors will find all kinds of fresh produce, as well as crafted goods. Enjoy all things fresh and authentic at this unique, almost 150-year-old market.

Situated in the Short North Arts District, which is an area of Columbus also worth spending time in!

Ohio Stadium

When the Ohio Stadium opened, it was the first horseshoe-shaped double-deck stadium in the US. It is the fourth largest on-campus facility in the nation.

This huge stadium sits on the banks of the Olentangy River, has a capacity of 102,780, and is the home ground of the Ohio State Buckeyes. It is one of the most recognizable sports landmarks.

In June each year, the Ohio Stadium hosts the Buckeye Country Superfest, which is a two-night festival of music, with live country music bands and singers.

German Village

German Village is just south of Columbus and was initially built by German settlers hundreds of years ago. In German Village, there are brick homes and shops as well as brick-lined streets. Enjoy visiting local businesses, including bakeries offering delicious pastries and coffees.

There is the German Village Brewery District, full of entertainment and bars, and here visitors can see Shadowbox Live, the country’s largest resident theater company.

The Book Loft and Schiller Park are also located in German Village.

Inniswood Metro Gardens

Inniswood Metro Gardens is owned and managed by Columbus Metro Parks. Located in Westerville, this 123-acre park has beautifully landscaped gardens and lawns. With six very short trails, which are really short walks that all wander through the gardens. With benches everywhere, visitors can pick their spot to sit and take in the stunning surroundings.

Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park

Battelle Darby Creek covers an area of 7,000 acres and stretches along both Big and Little Darby Creeks. There are 14 trails here, and activities include biking, canoeing/kayaking, fishing, a natural play area, and a nature center.

There are both reservable and non-reservable shelters available.

Dublin

Dublin, as the name may suggest, has very strong Irish roots. Located in the northwest corner of central Ohio, Dublin is the second largest city in this region.

Things to do in Dublin include Indian Run Falls, Kiwanis Riverway Park, Abbey Theater, Field of Corn, and of course, Bridge Park with the amazing Link Bridge that is the longest span, single-tower S-shaped suspension bridge in the world. It crosses the Scioto River, connecting Bridge Park to Historic Dublin. It is a pedestrian and bicycle bridge.

Lancaster

Lancaster is in the southeast of central Ohio and is the gateway to the Hocking Hills region. It is the county seat of Fairfield County and also hosts the Fairfield County Fair each year.

Things to do in Lancaster include the Rock Mill Covered Bridge, the Ohio Glass Museum, Valley Zipline Tours, and the Olde Shoe Factory Antique Mall. For the braver visitors, there is a Ghost Hunt at Fairfield County Infirmary and the really brave can even stay overnight!

Things to Do in Northwest Ohio

Northwest Ohio has a coastline along Lake Erie. The largest city in the northwest is Toledo, with other cities such as Sandusky and Put in Bay.

Toledo

Toledo is in the north of the northwest region of Ohio, and it sits on the Maumee River and Maumee Bay area of Lake Erie.

Toledo Zoo and Aquarium

Toledo Zoo and Aquarium is a firm family favorite place to visit in the area. There is an African-themed carousel, Safari Railway Train, a zip line experience, sky bridge, and challenge course available at the zoo.

You should plan to be at the zoo for a large part of a day if you want to see everything here.

The Valentine Theatre

Put in Bay

Put in Bay is one of Ohio’s most visited vacation destinations. Situated on South Bass Island, surrounded by Lake Erie, you would not be wrong in thinking there are a lot of water activities available here. However, Put in Bay has so much more going on too!

The best way to get around Put in Bay is via golf buggy. They are available for hire from a few rental companies on the island, and you will see them everywhere here!

Put in Bay’s most famous landmark is Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial. Other great places to visit are Perry’s Cave and Family Fun Center, Lake Erie Islands Historical Society Museum, Oak Point State Park, and DeRivera Park.

Fun activities include Adventure Bay Amusement Park, Kayak the Bay, Put in Bay Parasail, and Put in Bay Jet Ski.

Things to Do in Northeast Ohio

Northeast Ohio is the most populated region of Ohio, with cities such as Cleveland, Akron, Youngstown, Canton, and Mansfield.

Cleveland

Cleveland has six script signs around the city in perfect photo-op locations. Even if you don’t know much about Cleveland, you will have seen the script signs across the internet or in movies.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is an iconic place that holds its induction ceremony every other year. All musicians long to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!

Other things to do in Cleveland include Tower City Center, Cleveland Museum of Natural History, Great Lakes Science Center, Progressive Field, A Christmas Story House, and Cleveland Botanical Garden.

For fun, there is Crocker Park Escape Room Adventures and Superelectric Pinball Parlor.

Cleveland is home to a host of breweries, and there are 18 reservations that make up Cleveland Metroparks.

Akron

Akron has the Ohio and Erie Canal running through it, separating east from west. It was once the Rubber Capital of the World, being home to Goodrich, Goodyear, Firestone, and General Tire companies.

Youngstown sits on the eastern edge of Ohio. It is the county seat of Mahoning County. Before World War II, Youngstown had a booming steel industry.

Located along the Scioto River, Chillicothe was once Ohio’s capital city. It is the only city in Ross County.

Athens

Athens is the county seat of Athens County and is located along the Hocking River in southeast Ohio.

Cincinnati

Cincinnati is Ohio’s third largest city by inner-city population, and the largest by metro population. The city crosses the Ohio River into Kentucky and crosses the county line into Indiana.

Things to do in Cincinnati include Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden, Great American Ball Park, Findlay Market, and Kings Island.

To travel around Cincy, the Bell Connector streetcar is a free service that stops at many of the great places to visit in the city.

Cincinnati is divided into areas, such as Downtown, Over The Rhine, Mount Adams, and The Banks.

Eye Protection for the Solar Eclipse

This is a quote from the NASA website about watching a solar eclipse:

When watching a partial or annular solar eclipse directly with your eyes, you must look through safe solar viewing glasses (“eclipse glasses”) or a safe handheld solar viewer at all times. Eclipse glasses are NOT regular sunglasses; regular sunglasses, no matter how dark, are not safe for viewing the Sun.

Do NOT look at the Sun through a camera lens, telescope, binoculars, or any other optical device while wearing eclipse glasses or using a handheld solar viewer — the concentrated solar rays will burn through the filter and cause serious eye injury.

Fun Facts About the 2024 Solar Eclipse

This will be the first total solar eclipse in the continental U.S. in 7 years.
A solar eclipse occurs when the Sun, the Moon, and Earth are aligned, or in syzygy.
A solar eclipse only happens at New Moon, but not at every New Moon.
Everyone in the continental U.S. will be able to see at least a partial eclipse.
This eclipse will be the most-viewed ever.
Totality is safe to look at.

The Next Total Eclipses Worldwide

If you want to chase total eclipses, the next ones that are due in the 2020s are:

August 12, 2026 – Greenland, Iceland, and Spain
August 2, 2027 – Spain, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and Somalia.
July 22, 2028 – Australia and New Zealand.

Spain has the extremely rare bonus of having a total eclipse two years running!

A total solar eclipse will not happen again in Ohio until 2099!

Wonderlight’s Christmas

Wonderlight´s Christmas is one of the best drive-through displays in the central Ohio area, and it is also the largest display. There are over 1 million lights, and they are all synchronized to Christmas music, which you can listen to via your car radio. This is a very popular display, and it can get quite lively as the season progresses.

Butch Bando’s Fantasy of Lights

This is a truly magical display that is located at the Alum Creek State Park Campgrounds. Christmas Lights Ohio

Christmas Lights is a drive of 1.5 miles, with over 2 million lights and over 40 individual displays. Tune into the radio and watch the lights move to the music.

This light show is at the Delaware County Fairgrounds, and it opens the day after Thanksgiving to the beginning of January.

Upper’s Winter Fantasy of Lights

Upper’s Winter Fantasy of Lights at Harrison Smith Park in Upper Sandusky is a magical light display covering over 33 acres, including illuminated characters and scenes, as well as a festively lit tractor and wagon.

This event is open throughout December, every evening from 6 pm. Before this drive-through is open to cars, you can walk through the lights, usually open two or three days in late November.

You can also take a horse-drawn carriage ride through the park. Tickets for this sell quickly, so be sure to make your reservation as soon as possible!

4-H Exchange Club Holiday Light Show

The Van Wert Fairgrounds Christmas Lights are a great way to support the local 4-H club. The Christmas lights display has over 100 different scenes, with Santa visits throughout the month.

Horse-drawn carriage rides are also available on selected dates, and these must be reserved in advance. There is more information available about this great light display on their Facebook page.

Bright Nights

Bright Nights is a gift from Mercy Health to the community, and what a gift it is! The Bright Nights display is in the Allen County Fairgrounds. There are over 80 LED light displays, including lit-up buildings, a light tunnel, and illuminated trees. As you drive through the display, the Lima Symphony Orchestra performs music over the radio.

Christmas Cruise Thru

This Christmas drive-through experience is located at the Defiance County Fairgrounds. This drive-through boasts over 3 million lights, and the length of the drive is 2.5 miles.

Northeast Ohio Drive Through Lights

Lights on The Lake

A free lakefront drive-thru display in Lorain’s Lakeview Park. The Lights on the Lake experience consists of thousands of lights with classic holiday scenes. Visit with Santa on selected nights in the Sunset Terrace. Enjoy some hot chocolate, cookie decorating, and crafts.

The Lights on the Lake event runs from late November to the end of December, every evening from 5.30 pm to 9 pm.

Ashtabula County’s Lights on the Lake

The Ashtabula County lights are located on the waterfront of Lake Erie. There are over 70 light displays on this drive and it covers over 50 acres of Lakeshore Park. There is a section that moves to the music and a variety of effects that add to the display.

This event is open on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from late November to the end of December from 6 pm to 9 pm.

Journey Borealis

Journey Borealis (previously Holiday Lights on the Hill) is an impressive display of lights in Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park which is over 300 acres. The Christmas Lights drive is over 2 miles long.

Holiday in Lights at Armco Park

A drive through Armco Park in Warren County is a great way to see a spectacular display in the comfort of your car.

The drive is over a mile long and there are over 250 displays on this drive, so there is lots to see. You can also purchase special glasses at the gates that let visitors see the lights from a different perspective.

Christmas Glow at Land of Illusion

Christmas Glow is the largest Christmas lights drive-through event in Southwest Ohio. There are over 4 million lights, and the length of the drive is over 2 miles.

As well as the drive-through tour, there is also a petting zoo, and guests can also visit Santa’s workshop. There is an impressive more than 40-foot-tall Christmas Tree, where guests can relax with a hot drink and keep warm at the gas fire pit.

Guernsey County Courthouse

The Guernsey County Courthouse in the Dickens Victorian Village puts on a nice Christmas lights display. The lights also run with the various Christmas music that is played. There is a large Christmas tree in the middle of the display, and there are also over 60 animated displays and over 55,000 lights. There is a free light show that goes on for 12 minutes and is great fun.

Lima is a city that has plenty for visitors to do. Whether you are simply passing through for a few hours or are staying in the local area, Lima has something for everyone. Parks, bars & restaurants are just some of the things to do in Lima Ohio!

About Lima Ohio

Lima is the county seat of Allen County in Northwest Ohio. The Joint Systems Manufacturing Center (Lima Army Tank Plant) is the sole manufacturer of the M1 Abrams tank.

Lima was named after Peru’s capital city Lima. The Ottawa River flows through the city, and Lima has a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons.

Fun Fact: Edna de Lima was an international operatic singer from Lima Ohio. Her real name was Edna Burton, and after marriage, Edna Van Dyke. The precise dates of both her birth and death are unknown, but she was born around 1875 and died in either 1959 or 1960.

In the opinion of my kids, a visit to Lima is not complete until we have visited Alter Ego Comics, they always find something of interest here! Personally, I love strolling around Schoonover Park, it’s so peaceful and quiet and is the perfect end to a busy day in Lima!

McLean Teddy Bear Park

Teddy Bear Park is a 134-acre park with three ponds and 3.5 miles of hiking trails. Activities and facilities available here include fishing (no license required), a large picnic area, two reservable shelters, a sand volleyball court, play equipment, and more.

The park is named as such because Mr. McLean would provide children in the surrounding hospitals with a teddy bear each, to help comfort them during their stay.

Lauer Historical Farm

Lauer Farm has a history dating back to the mid-1830s. Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District acquired the farm in 2006. There has been extensive work carried out to make this a historical working farm. On a visit to the farm, you can learn about past agricultural techniques, and how they are still used today.

This location is also offered as an event venue. Reservable facilities include the Historic Home, Bank Barn, Celebration Garden Venue, and the Wedding Pergola.

Hidden Creek Golf Club has an 18-hold golf course available for guests and members. There is also a driving range and practice areas.

Outdoor Pavilion and Charcoal Grill has a large charcoal grill as well as a full-service kitchen. The dinners here are served buffet-style.

Allen County Historical Society & Museum

The Allen County Historical Society & Museum is one of the most visited attractions in Lima Ohio. Allen County Historical Society & Museum is a fantastic place to visit if you would like to know more about the area. MacDonell House is an old Victorian House and it has been cared for and kept in its original style since those days.

A lot of time and effort has been put into this house and there are some very interesting artifacts on show as well. The house itself can take a whole day to look around and admire. This is a very busy attraction so check opening times in advance of your visit.

Lincoln Park Railway Exhibit

At the Lincoln Park Railway Exhibit, there are steam engines, carriages cabooses, and other artifacts on show. Some of the steam carriages are still in use today. Guests are welcome to picnic in the area and it is a great attraction to visit in the summer months.

Schoonover Park

This is one of the quietest attractions in Lima Ohio. There is a large lake here that contains various freshwater fish. Some of the fish in this lake are not native to Ohio, but still call this lake their home. There is also a swimming pool available.

This park is open all year round, so you can enjoy the park after one of Ohio’s legendary snowstorms, or admire the various plants and trees in the spring and fall as well. In the summer months, when the trees are in bloom you can sit and enjoy a picnic.

Ottawa Metro Park

Ottawa Metro Park is a 287-acre park with fishing and boating available on the 89-acre Lima Lake reservoir, and swimming at the 450-foot-long Ottawa Metro Park Beach. There is an 18-hole Frisbee golf course, a sand volleyball court, and an outdoor amphitheater. Three reservable shelters with electricity are available.
