There are many services available at the Emerald Necklace Marina. The Marina Store and Courtesy Dock has live bait, fishing tackle, boating necessities, bagged ice, cold beverages, gifts, and much more.

There is a dry rack for boats from 18 to 23 feet long. The dry rack includes winter storage.

A gated boatyard for winter and summer storage is available, with access to the boatyard during operating hours. A trailer yard for summer storage is also available.

The Emerald Necklace Marina Café gives visitors the chance to recharge with snacks, including nachos, pretzels, Mozzarella sticks, and buffalo cauliflower. Mains include chicken tenders, summer salad, black bean burger, and cheeseburger. Gluten-free buns are available.

There is a selection of soft drinks, tea, and coffee available too.

The Ice Cream Bar sells a variety of Honey Hut ice cream as well as a good selection of beers, wines, and cocktails.

Kayaks and paddleboards are available for rental at 41 North Coastal Adventures. Reservations are recommended.

The Worden’s Ledges trail is an easy hike with beautiful rock formations. Nobel Stuart, who married Nettie Worden in 1951, sadly, Nettie passed away within a year of the marriage, leaving everything to Nobel, who went on to spend his time creating the rock carvings and sculptures that hikers will come across.

Look out for the trail markers that depict a raccoon’s face along the trail. A short way into the trail, hikers will come to a well-marked junction. Turning left will lead in a clockwise direction, passing the carvings and sculptures.

For horseback riders, there is an adjacent bridle path, but it does not go past the carvings. Hikers can add to their walk by taking the bridle path before or after the hiking trail.

Hinckley Reservation has many activities and amenities if you want to make a day of it or are staying in the area.

Constructed in 1887, the stone dam provided water power for the Harbison Flour Mill, which was just behind it. Cedar Cliff Falls replaced a previous dam that was destroyed in a flood. Work was halted at the flour mill in 1917.

This manmade waterfall usually has plentiful falling water. It rivals the beauty of any natural waterfall! At around 30 feet wide and 40 feet high, the stone wall is 2 to 2½ feet thick. The stone wall’s downstream face is vertical, and the upstream face has a 2:1 slope. The stone wall is curved to absorb the water pressure behind it.

Visitors can park at Cedar Cliff Falls if they don’t wish to hike. Hikers can park near the Log House and take the 2.5-mile out-and-back trail via the Gorge Trail and Rim Trail. This is an easy trail and should take around 50 minutes to complete. Dogs on a leash are welcome here.

Located in Blacklick Woods Metro Park in Reynoldsburg, central Ohio, the canopy walk is constructed with more than 250 telephone poles supporting the structure for its one-eighth of a mile length.

There are 72 steps on a zigzag staircase to get to the boardwalk, but there is also a tower with an elevator, making it ADA accessible. Another 27 steps will take visitors to an observation deck 55 feet above ground level.

Blacklick Woods Canopy Walk affords amazing views of beech-maple forest and parkland. Get up close to the birds, including Blue-Headed Vireo, Blackburnian Warbler, and Red-Bellied Woodpecker. Special bird feeders keep the birds interested in the area.

Let the kids play, or simply relax on the hammock-style giant cargo net that can host up to five people at a time.

There are three rope bridges for adventurous kids and adults, a fireman’s pole, and a fun treehouse to play in.

The canopy walk is open every day of the year with occasional closures for maintenance and cleaning. It is completely free to use.

About Hocking Hills

Hocking Hills is an area of the Allegheny Plateau in Appalachian Ohio. It is situated primarily in Hocking County and features gorges, cliffs, rock shelters, and waterfalls. The topography of the region is dominated by Blackhand Sandstone that forms high cliffs and narrow, deep gorges.

The region has mild weather, averaging around 40 inches of rain and 175 sunny days per year. Hocking Hills is a stunningly amazing region that is home to parks, caves, nature preserves, a host of retail shops, and plenty of places to eat and stay.

In this article we will be taking a glimpse into many of the places to visit, things to do, activities, shopping, eateries, and places to stay.

State Parks and Preserves in Hocking Hills

The main park in the region is Hocking Hills State Park. Within this park are Ash Cave, Cantwell Cliffs, Cedar Falls, Conkles Hollow, Old Man’s Cave, Rock House, and Hemlock Bridge Trail to Whispering Cave.

Old Man’s Cave

Old Man’s Cave is the most popular of all the Hocking areas. The Upper Falls is the start of the Grandma Gatewood Trail which is a 6-mile trail connecting three popular areas: Old Man’s Cave to Cedar Falls to Ash Cave. This trail is also part of the Buckeye Trail as well as part of two national systems.

Ash Cave

Ash Cave is the most spectacular feature of Hocking Hills State Park. Additionally, it is the largest and most impressive recess cave in Ohio.

Cedar Falls

Cedar Falls is the greatest waterfall in the Hocking Hills region in terms of volume of water. Specifically, it is Queer Creek that falls over the rocks here. The staircase that descends from the parking lot to Cedar Falls, named Democracy Steps, was designed by Japanese artist and architect Akio Hizume.

Conkles Hollow

Conkles Hollow is a rugged, rocky gorge – one of the deepest in Ohio. The valley floor is covered with ferns and wildflowers.

Cantwell Cliffs

Cantwell Cliffs is not such a well-visited part of Hocking Hills as it is quite remote. However, many consider Cantwell Cliffs to be one of the most picturesque areas in the region.

Rock House

Rock House is the only true cave in Hocking Hills State Park. It is situated midway up a 150-foot cliff. As it remains cool during the summer, it is a popular destination.

Rock Bridge

There are three such formations in Ohio, and Rock Bridge is the largest of them. The 100-foot-long Blackhand sandstone bridge formation rises 45 feet above the bottom of the gorge.

Clear Creek Metro Park

Clear Creek Metro Park covers over 5,300 acres of woodlands and cliffs, ravines, and creeks. There are more than 2,200 species of plants and animals. Most of Clear Creek is in the Hocking Hills region; however, a portion of it runs into Lancaster in Fairfield County.

Lake Logan and Lake Logan Marina

Lake Logan covers 400 acres and has a 530-foot beach for sunbathers and swimmers. Activities include canoeing, kayaking, fishing, and boating. The Lake Logan Marina is part of Lake Logan Park.

Lake Hope State Park

Lake Hope is in the Hocking-Vinton area of the state. Here visitors can enjoy camping, swimming, and canoeing.

Tar Hollow State Park

Tar Hollow has a 15-acre lake called Pine Lake. Activities at the lake include fishing, swimming, beach, and paddle boat rentals. In this park are some of the best shelter houses in the region for large family or group outings.

Hocking State Forest

In the Hocking State Forest, plant species that are commonly found further north mix with the typically southern species providing an unusual variety of plant life and associated wildlife.

Wayne National Forest

Wayne National Forest is the only National Forest in Ohio and it covers three areas – Athens, Hocking, and Perry Counties. There are large areas of reforestation here as large parts of the area were strip-mined in the late 1800s. There is a huge variety of plants and wildlife in this forest.

Visit Caesar Creek State Park

You will find some of the oldest rocks in Ohio at Caesar Creek State Park. Sedimentary limestone and shale are evidence of the shallow ocean that once covered Ohio hundreds of millions of years ago.

The forests here have over 65 species of plants. Oak-hickory and beech maples cover the ridges and hillsides, and a northern floodplain forest can be found in the valley.

Caesar Creek is home to many animals, including white-tail deer, raccoons, red-tail hawks, red foxes, and box turtles.

In 1773, a man named Caesar was using the creek to hunt beaver. He gained popularity and became the official namesake.

Caesar Creek State Park was dedicated in 1978 after the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers took it over to assist with flood control in the Little Miami River watershed.

Activities and Facilities at Caesar Creek State Park

There are many outdoor activities available at Caesar Creek State Park, especially on the 2,830-acre lake.

Boating and Kayaking

There are five launch ramps at the lake. All boat ramps have restrooms and parking lots close by. It is an unlimited horsepower lake.

The leased and transient docks are available from April 1 to October 15. There are 105 seasonal slips. Boat dock leasing includes showers.

The marina has a retail area, a concession stand serving ice cream, pizza, and drinks, as well as restrooms and an outdoor seating area.

There are multiple places to launch your kayak around the park.

Two boat camping and swim areas are available. One is located just south of the campground, and the other is near the 50 Springs area in the cove.

Beach and Swimming

There is a 1,300-foot public beach, and swimming is allowed in designated areas. Pet are also permitted in designated areas.

Fishing and Hunting

Most fishing at Caesar Creek must be done from a boat. It is one of the top lakes for large-mouth bass in Ohio. You will also find small-mouth bass, bluegill, crappie, white and spotted bass, saugeye, and flathead catfish here.

Ohio fishing regulations are enforced. 16 years and older must have a valid Ohio fishing license.

Hunting is only allowed in designated areas. Hunters must have a valid hunting license and must follow all Ohio Hunting & Trapping regulations.

Trails

There are 14 hiking trails, four mountain biking trails, and four bridle trails. Hikers may use all of these trails.

Camping and Picnicking

There are 252 electric sites, and 35 full hook-up sites. The sites are mostly or partially shaded. There is access to showers, flush toilets, dump stations, a camper’s beach, a boat ramp, playgrounds, and a basketball court. The camp store has supplies, firewood, ice, concessions, and kayak rentals.

Pets are welcome. No backpacking or primitive campsites are available.

There are 25 non-electric horse campsites available on a first-come, first-serve basis. They include tie rails and picket posts. You will have access to a shelter house, latrine, and well with non-potable water.

Several picnic areas are available throughout the park. You will find tables, grills, and drinking water.

Lodge Day Rental

Hopewell Day Lodge can be rented for the day for reunions or other celebrations. It holds up to 40 guests and contains a full kitchen, restrooms, a room with tables and chairs, and an outdoor area as well. It can be reserved from 10 am to 10 pm. Reserve online.

More Activities

• Pioneer Village: This area of 15 historic buildings depicts life in the early 1800s. There is seasonal programming.
• Nature Center: The Nature Center has displays of the cultural and natural history of the area. Programs are available year-round.
• Events: Caesar Creek State Park hosts various events. Check the website for information.
• Ice fishing and cross-country skiing are available in the snowy winter season.

Split Rocks Trail is a genuine hidden gem in Hocking Hills where you will find an outstanding geological feature called Split Rocks. Thought to be the result of an earthquake, the Black Hand Sandstone has split into vertical slabs, creating a maze-like feature.

Access to the Split Rocks Trail is through Camp Oty’Okwa. There are some designated parking spots at the trailhead.

This trail takes you along a tree-lined ridge and ends at Split Rocks. The hiking path is easy to follow as the trees form the trail wall.

Split Rocks Trail Hocking Hills is a moderate hike of around 2.5 miles. The surface is forest trail, and you can expect this trail to take approximately 3 hours, there and back.

Big Brothers Big Sisters is a charitable organization that offers direct, one-to-one mentoring for children from 5 years old through young adulthood. Their mission statement is: “Create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth.”

About Highbanks Metro Park

Highbanks Metro Park is the most visited Metro Park in the Columbus and Franklin County Metro Parks system, attracting around one million visitors annually.

It is named for its 100-foot-high shale bluff that towers over the Olentangy State Scenic River. At Highbanks, you will find ravines, meadows, dense forests, and Indian burial mounds. The trails will take you to the top of the bluff, where you are treated to the most amazing views.

The bluffs at Highbanks are made up of limestone, Ohio black shale as well as Olentangy shale. The observation deck on top of the high bluff was used by natives to keep lookout.

Highbanks Metro Park contains a nature center, a sledding hill, a natural play area as well as the Edward F Hutchins State Nature Preserve.

Two of the earthworks – Highbanks Metropolitan Park Mounds I and II – and the Highbank Park Works are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Edward F. Hutchins Nature Preserve

This nature preserve within Highbanks Metro Park covers an area of 206 acres. It is situated on the 100-foot-high bluffs, overlooking the Olentangy State Scenic River. The woodland areas contain a mixture of older and younger trees, predominantly oak, maple, and hickory.

This preserve also offers plant lovers a huge variety, with 45 trees, 22 shrubs, and 144 herbaceous species. One of the Highbanks Metro Park’s Indian mounds is to be found here.

Natural Features in Highbanks Metro Park

Highbanks is home to a pair of Bald Eagles that have hatched eaglets since 2010. There are also two large sycamores, reportedly 500 years old, and with a circumference of 23-24 feet.

The deep ravines in Highbanks Metro Parks are thought to be 10,000 years old and have been carved by glacial meltwater.

Concretions are one of the unique geological features at Highbanks Metro Park, they are formed by mineral cement in spaces between rocks or soil. They are usually spherical and sometimes have a fossil inside.

Basically, there has to be something inside them. This could be a leaf, a tooth, a piece of shell, etc. Whatever is inside a concretion is what encourages the concretion to form around it.

In the 1980s, an eroding concretion in Highbanks Metro Park split in half. Inside was the jawbone of a Dinichthys – a prehistoric fish. This discovery is on display at the nature center.

Wading and Paddling in the Water

When you visit Highbanks Metro Park, be sure to take your rainboots, as there are opportunities to walk or go creeking in the water. If you are near loose shale stones, you can skim them across the water – this is great fun for kids and adults alike!

Trails

There are nine trails at Highbanks Metro Park, ranging from easy to moderate/difficult. Pets and bikes are welcome on some trails, and a couple of the trails are also wheelchair and stroller-friendly.

Big Meadows Path

• 1 mile | Easy | Hike | Bike | Pets | Paved

This is an easy loop trail that is just over a mile long. It goes through meadows and playfields. Pets and bikes are both welcome on this trail. Expect this walk to take around 30 minutes.

Dripping Rock Trail

• 2½ miles | Moderate to Difficult | Hike | Gravel

The Dripping Rock trail is a loop trail that goes through a forest and passes steep ravines. Along the trail, there are two further loops that you can take – if you do, your hike will be 3.8 miles long. Pets and bikes are not permitted on this trail. You can expect your walk to take nearly two hours if you include the two extra loops.

Multi-Use Trail

• 1¼ miles | Easy | Hike | Bike | Pets | Paved

This is an easy one-way trail that is a little more than a mile long and goes through woods and fields. Pets and bikes are welcome on this trail. Expect this hike to take around 40 minutes.

Overlook Trail

• 2¼ miles | Moderate to Difficult | Hike | Gravel

The Overlook Trail is an out-and-back trail that is 2¼ miles long and goes through the Edward F. Hutchins Nature Preserve and to the observation deck on the 100-foot bluff. Pets and bikes are not permitted on this trail. You can expect this hike to take around one hour.

Sycamore Trail

• 1 mile | Easy | Hike | Jog | Gravel

This is a loop trail that starts from the parking lot at the River Bluff area and winds through a forest of sycamore, buckeye, and cottonwood. There is a stretch of this trail that runs alongside the river. This trail is also wheelchair and stroller-friendly.

Coyote Run

• 3½ miles | Moderate | Hike | Pets | Cross-Country Ski | Grass and Dirt

The Coyote Run is an out-and-back trail that is 3½ miles long and goes through woods and fields. The start point is at the Nature Center. The trail has two main loops and one small loop. Pets are welcome on this trail, but please note that the Coyote Run trail is in use for cross-country skiing in the winter months when conditions are suitable. This hike will take around 1 hour and 45 minutes.

Oak Coves Path

• ½ mile | Easy | Hike | Bike | Pets | Paved

An easy, short hike, this trail passes through meadows and playing fields. Pets and bikes are welcome on this trail. You can expect this hike to take around 15 minutes.

Scenic River Trail

• ½ mile | Easy | Hike | Pets | Gravel

As the name suggests, this short trail runs alongside the river and through some forest. Dogs are welcome, and this trail is also wheelchair and stroller-friendly.

Wetland Spur Trail

• ½ mile | Easy to Moderate | Hike | Grass and Dirt

The Wetland Spur trail is a one-way trail that is just short of half a mile long, and it goes through woodland to a wetland with an observation deck. This walk will take around 15 minutes.

Facilities

There are both reservable and non-reservable shelters available:

Reservable Shelters

There are three reservable shelters here:

• Mansion holds 100 people and has one grill with an outdoor kitchenette. There is a sink, electricity, a stone fireplace, a drinking fountain, an outdoor firepit and there is also a play area.
• Northern holds 120 people and has two grills, electricity, a stone fireplace, as well as a wood-burning stove. There is a sink as well as a small counter, an outdoor fire pit, and a brick patio. Playground equipment, large playfield, volleyball posts, and net.
• Nature Center Multipurpose Room is a meeting room with a maximum capacity of 99. ADA accessible.

Non-Reservable Shelters

Two areas of the park contain 11 non-reservable shelters.

• Oak Coves Picnic Area has picnic tables, grills, large playfields, and playground equipment. There are two shelters, each seating 64 people. ADA accessible.
• Big Meadows Picnic Area offers seven small shelters seating 16 each and two open shelters seating 64 each. They have grills, large playfields, and playground equipment, and are ADA-accessible.

About Devil’s Bathtub

The Devil’s Bathtub is along the Old Man’s Cave hiking trail. It is a natural phenomenon of a series of pools along a narrow stream. The pools are of different depths, but the deepest one is just 2 meters.

This a unique waterfall due to its formation, thanks to the other nearby waterfalls that have been falling for thousands of years, the water has created a bowl in the sandstone. The Devil’s Bathtub is also a level waterfall, and the water not only moves quickly, but it creates a whirlpool as it moves.

It should be noted that it can be dangerous to jump into the Devil’s Bathtub.

Visiting Devil’s Bathtub

Winter – In extreme weather, the water freezes, and all the waterfalls in Hocking Hills turn to stunning, static ice.

Spring – As the winter ice melts, the waterfalls, including Devil’s Bathtub, become very lively. This is when they are at their most awesome, but also their most dangerous!

Summer – Hocking Hills is a joy in the summer with warm temperatures. Often, the waterfalls are either very slow-moving or not falling at all during the summer!

Fall – The beautiful colors of fall and cooler temperatures make this one of the best seasons to visit. It is always best just after a rainfall.

About Prairie Oaks Metro Park

Prairie Oaks Metro Park is an incredibly scenic Metro Park that has amazing views of the Big Darby State and National Scenic River that flows through the park. The Metro Park is known for fishing and boating, as it has a few lakes. Situated in West Jefferson, and stretching into Hilliard and Plain City, Central Ohio.

The park features 500 acres of flowering prairies, restored using seeds native to the Darby Plains. There are seven hiking trails and one bridle trail, as well as shelterhouses and plenty of activities available here.

There are several lakes within the park, including Beaver Lake and Darby Bend Lakes. Fishing and kayaking are available on a couple of these lakes.

Trails

There are eight trails available at Prairie Oaks Metro Park, most welcome pets on a leash and one allows biking.

Alder Trail

0.5-miles | Easy | Hike | Pets | Grass / Dirt
This is an easy 0.5-mile trail that connects the Darby Bend Lakes area with the Sycamore Plains Trail. Dogs are welcome on this trail. You can expect this hike to take approximately 20 minutes.

Darby Creek Greenway Trail

3.5-miles | Easy | Hike | Bike | Pets | Gravel | ADA
This is an easy 3.5-mile one-way trail that links various trails in the park. Starting at the northern part of the park and finishing at the outskirts of the southern area of the park near I-70. Dogs and bikes are welcome on this trail. You can expect this hike to take around 1 hour 45 minutes.

River Rock Trail

0.6-miles | Easy | Hike | Pets | Grass / Dirt
River Rock Trail is an easy 0.6-mile loop around a lake in the Darby Bend Lakes area. It is not actually a full loop, but it connects to the Darby Creek Greenway Trail which will take you back to the beginning of the River Rock Trail. Dogs are welcome on this trail. This hike will take you around 20 minutes to complete.

Beaver Lake Trail

0.9-miles | Easy | Hike | Pets | Grass / Dirt
At just under a mile long, this easy loop trail runs around Beaver Lake in the natural play area. Dogs are welcome on this trail. You can expect this hike to take around 20 minutes.

Coneflower Trail

2.5-miles | Moderate to Difficult | Hike | Cross-Country Skiing | Dirt
Coneflower Trail is a 2.5-mile out-and-back trail. It crosses two steep hills and runs along Big Darby Creek. When the weather allows, this trail is reserved for cross-country skiing. This hike will take about 1 hour and 20 minutes

Lakeview Trail

0.9-miles | Easy | Hike | Pets | Grass / Dirt and Gravel
This is an easy one-way trail that passes a lake at Darby Bend Lakes and circles an Indian Mound. Dogs are welcome on this trail. You can expect your hike to take around 30 minutes.

Sycamore Plains Trail

1.1-miles | Moderate to Difficult | Hike | Pets | Grass / Dirt
The Sycamore Plains Trail, as the name would suggest, passes large sycamores on its 2.2-mile loop. It goes along Big Darby Creek. You will find the Osage Opening loop trail and the Tallgrass Loop Trail along the way. Taking both of those will bring the distance to 2.2 miles. Dogs are welcome on this trail. If you just do the Sycamore Plains Trail, it will take approximately 30 minutes. If you add the two loop trails, you can expect to be hiking for about 1 hour and 10 minutes.

Bridle Trail

5.7-miles | Easy | Hike | Horseback Ride | Cross-Country Skiing | Dirt
The Bridle Trail is an easy 5.7-mile loop trail that crosses Big Darby Creek. The trail starts at the parking lot, and you can go east or west. There are two more loops along the way, and if you take them both, your hike will be 6.7 miles. Horse riders are welcome on this trail, and when the weather allows, this trail is reserved for cross-country skiing. This trail will take about 3½ hours to complete.

Darby Bend Lakes

• Two shelters are available that each seat 60. At this shelter, there is also a restroom and grills available. This shelter does not supply any drinking water, so please be sure to bring your drinks.

Prairie View Picnic Area

• One shelter is available that seats 60, and there are restrooms and grills available. No drinking water facilities are available at this shelter, but there is drinking water available at the park office.

Whispering Oaks Picnic Area

• One shelter is available that seats 60. Restrooms and grills are available. No drinking water facilities are available at this shelter, but there is drinking water available at the park office.
