There are many services available at the Emerald Necklace Marina. The Marina Store and Courtesy Dock has live bait, fishing tackle, boating necessities, bagged ice, cold beverages, gifts, and much more.

There is a dry rack for boats from 18 to 23 feet long. The dry rack includes winter storage.

A gated boatyard for winter and summer storage is available, with access to the boatyard during operating hours. A trailer yard for summer storage is also available.

The Emerald Necklace Marina Café gives visitors the chance to recharge with snacks, including nachos, pretzels, Mozzarella sticks, and buffalo cauliflower. Mains include chicken tenders, summer salad, black bean burger, and cheeseburger. Gluten-free buns are available.

There is a selection of soft drinks, tea, and coffee available too.

The Ice Cream Bar sells a variety of Honey Hut ice cream as well as a good selection of beers, wines, and cocktails.

Kayaks and paddleboards are available for rental at 41 North Coastal Adventures. Reservations are recommended.

About The Trolls at Aullwood Audubon

This exhibition features three giant trolls, Bo (father), Bodil (mother), and Bibbi (daughter), and their huge bird nest.

Thomas Dambo is from Denmark and is the world’s leading recycling artist. He has been building trolls for over 10 years, and there are currently more than 100 featured around the world.

The accompanying story by Thomas Dambo is available online and is in the lobby of the nature center and farm discovery center at Aullwood Audubon.

Trails to the Trolls Exhibition

The walk to visit all three trolls and the bird nest consists of parts of the Cardinal Trail, the Geology Trail, and the Warbler Way Trail.

If you enter at Aullwood Farm, Bodil will be your first troll visit, followed by Bo, Bibbi, and Nest. If you enter at the Aullwood Nature Center the order is reversed.

Visiting the Trolls Guidelines

When visiting this exhibition, there are some guidelines:

• Stay on the trails to protect plants and wildlife
• Do not climb, sit, or stand on the trolls, especially their hands and feet.
• Do not climb on the troll nest or remove any pieces from it.
• Do play in the troll nest – the trolls want visitors to have fun!
• Do hug the trolls – all trolls love to be hugged!

About Aullwood Audubon

Aullwood Audubon is a 200-acre nature sanctuary with a nature center and farm connected by eight miles of walking trails. Dogs on a leash are welcome on the trails, but not on retractable leashes.

There is an Education Center with hands-on exhibits in two discovery rooms, six thematic classrooms, and observation rooms. Meetings, conferences, receptions, and community events can be held at the 120-seat auditorium.

The farm is a working, sustainable farm with an old barn housing pigs, horses, goats, and other livestock. The Farm Discovery Center has interactive exhibits, a farm classroom, an auditorium, and the county’s first Farm Preschool on a working farm.

Visit the herb and vegetable gardens, spring house, pond, sugar house, and croplands.

About Hocking Hills

Hocking Hills is an area of the Allegheny Plateau in Appalachian Ohio. It is situated primarily in Hocking County and features gorges, cliffs, rock shelters, and waterfalls. The topography of the region is dominated by Blackhand Sandstone that forms high cliffs and narrow, deep gorges.

The region has mild weather, averaging around 40 inches of rain and 175 sunny days per year. Hocking Hills is a stunningly amazing region that is home to parks, caves, nature preserves, a host of retail shops, and plenty of places to eat and stay.

In this article we will be taking a glimpse into many of the places to visit, things to do, activities, shopping, eateries, and places to stay.

State Parks and Preserves in Hocking Hills

The main park in the region is Hocking Hills State Park. Within this park are Ash Cave, Cantwell Cliffs, Cedar Falls, Conkles Hollow, Old Man’s Cave, Rock House, and Hemlock Bridge Trail to Whispering Cave.

Old Man’s Cave

Old Man’s Cave is the most popular of all the Hocking areas. The Upper Falls is the start of the Grandma Gatewood Trail which is a 6-mile trail connecting three popular areas: Old Man’s Cave to Cedar Falls to Ash Cave. This trail is also part of the Buckeye Trail as well as part of two national systems.

Ash Cave

Ash Cave is the most spectacular feature of Hocking Hills State Park. Additionally, it is the largest and most impressive recess cave in Ohio.

Cedar Falls

Cedar Falls is the greatest waterfall in the Hocking Hills region in terms of volume of water. Specifically, it is Queer Creek that falls over the rocks here. The staircase that descends from the parking lot to Cedar Falls, named Democracy Steps, was designed by Japanese artist and architect Akio Hizume.

Conkles Hollow

Conkles Hollow is a rugged, rocky gorge – one of the deepest in Ohio. The valley floor is covered with ferns and wildflowers.

Cantwell Cliffs

Cantwell Cliffs is not such a well-visited part of Hocking Hills as it is quite remote. However, many consider Cantwell Cliffs to be one of the most picturesque areas in the region.

Rock House

Rock House is the only true cave in Hocking Hills State Park. It is situated midway up a 150-foot cliff. As it remains cool during the summer, it is a popular destination.

Rock Bridge

There are three such formations in Ohio, and Rock Bridge is the largest of them. The 100-foot-long Blackhand sandstone bridge formation rises 45 feet above the bottom of the gorge.

Clear Creek Metro Park

Clear Creek Metro Park covers over 5,300 acres of woodlands and cliffs, ravines, and creeks. There are more than 2,200 species of plants and animals. Most of Clear Creek is in the Hocking Hills region; however, a portion of it runs into Lancaster in Fairfield County.

Lake Logan and Lake Logan Marina

Lake Logan covers 400 acres and has a 530-foot beach for sunbathers and swimmers. Activities include canoeing, kayaking, fishing, and boating. The Lake Logan Marina is part of Lake Logan Park.

Lake Hope State Park

Lake Hope is in the Hocking-Vinton area of the state. Here visitors can enjoy camping, swimming, and canoeing.

Tar Hollow State Park

Tar Hollow has a 15-acre lake called Pine Lake. Activities at the lake include fishing, swimming, beach, and paddle boat rentals. In this park are some of the best shelter houses in the region for large family or group outings.

Hocking State Forest

In the Hocking State Forest, plant species that are commonly found further north mix with the typically southern species providing an unusual variety of plant life and associated wildlife.

Wayne National Forest

Wayne National Forest is the only National Forest in Ohio and it covers three areas – Athens, Hocking, and Perry Counties. There are large areas of reforestation here as large parts of the area were strip-mined in the late 1800s. There is a huge variety of plants and wildlife in this forest.

About Highbanks Metro Park

Highbanks Metro Park is the most visited Metro Park in the Columbus and Franklin County Metro Parks system, attracting around one million visitors annually.

It is named for its 100-foot-high shale bluff that towers over the Olentangy State Scenic River. At Highbanks, you will find ravines, meadows, dense forests, and Indian burial mounds. The trails will take you to the top of the bluff, where you are treated to the most amazing views.

The bluffs at Highbanks are made up of limestone, Ohio black shale as well as Olentangy shale. The observation deck on top of the high bluff was used by natives to keep lookout.

Highbanks Metro Park contains a nature center, a sledding hill, a natural play area as well as the Edward F Hutchins State Nature Preserve.

Two of the earthworks – Highbanks Metropolitan Park Mounds I and II – and the Highbank Park Works are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Edward F. Hutchins Nature Preserve

This nature preserve within Highbanks Metro Park covers an area of 206 acres. It is situated on the 100-foot-high bluffs, overlooking the Olentangy State Scenic River. The woodland areas contain a mixture of older and younger trees, predominantly oak, maple, and hickory.

This preserve also offers plant lovers a huge variety, with 45 trees, 22 shrubs, and 144 herbaceous species. One of the Highbanks Metro Park’s Indian mounds is to be found here.

Natural Features in Highbanks Metro Park

Highbanks is home to a pair of Bald Eagles that have hatched eaglets since 2010. There are also two large sycamores, reportedly 500 years old, and with a circumference of 23-24 feet.

The deep ravines in Highbanks Metro Parks are thought to be 10,000 years old and have been carved by glacial meltwater.

Concretions

Concretions are one of the unique geological features at Highbanks Metro Park, they are formed by mineral cement in spaces between rocks or soil. They are usually spherical and sometimes have a fossil inside.

Basically, there has to be something inside them. This could be a leaf, a tooth, a piece of shell, etc. Whatever is inside a concretion is what encourages the concretion to form around it.

In the 1980s, an eroding concretion in Highbanks Metro Park split in half. Inside was the jawbone of a Dinichthys – a prehistoric fish. This discovery is on display at the nature center.

Wading and Paddling in the Water

When you visit Highbanks Metro Park, be sure to take your rainboots, as there are opportunities to walk or go creeking in the water. If you are near loose shale stones, you can skim them across the water – this is great fun for kids and adults alike!

Trails

There are nine trails at Highbanks Metro Park, ranging from easy to moderate/difficult. Pets and bikes are welcome on some trails, and a couple of the trails are also wheelchair and stroller-friendly.

Big Meadows Path

• 1 mile | Easy | Hike | Bike | Pets | Paved

This is an easy loop trail that is just over a mile long. It goes through meadows and playfields. Pets and bikes are both welcome on this trail. Expect this walk to take around 30 minutes.

Dripping Rock Trail

• 2½ miles | Moderate to Difficult | Hike | Gravel

The Dripping Rock trail is a loop trail that goes through a forest and passes steep ravines. Along the trail, there are two further loops that you can take – if you do, your hike will be 3.8 miles long. Pets and bikes are not permitted on this trail. You can expect your walk to take nearly two hours if you include the two extra loops.

Multi-Use Trail

• 1¼ miles | Easy | Hike | Bike | Pets | Paved

This is an easy one-way trail that is a little more than a mile long and goes through woods and fields. Pets and bikes are welcome on this trail. Expect this hike to take around 40 minutes.

Overlook Trail

• 2¼ miles | Moderate to Difficult | Hike | Gravel

The Overlook Trail is an out-and-back trail that is 2¼ miles long and goes through the Edward F. Hutchins Nature Preserve and to the observation deck on the 100-foot bluff. Pets and bikes are not permitted on this trail. You can expect this hike to take around one hour.

Sycamore Trail

• 1 mile | Easy | Hike | Jog | Gravel

This is a loop trail that starts from the parking lot at the River Bluff area and winds through a forest of sycamore, buckeye, and cottonwood. There is a stretch of this trail that runs alongside the river. This trail is also wheelchair and stroller-friendly.

Coyote Run

• 3½ miles | Moderate | Hike | Pets | Cross-Country Ski | Grass and Dirt

The Coyote Run is an out-and-back trail that is 3½ miles long and goes through woods and fields. The start point is at the Nature Center. The trail has two main loops and one small loop. Pets are welcome on this trail, but please note that the Coyote Run trail is in use for cross-country skiing in the winter months when conditions are suitable. This hike will take around 1 hour and 45 minutes.

Oak Coves Path

• ½ mile | Easy | Hike | Bike | Pets | Paved

An easy, short hike, this trail passes through meadows and playing fields. Pets and bikes are welcome on this trail. You can expect this hike to take around 15 minutes.

Scenic River Trail

• ½ mile | Easy | Hike | Pets | Gravel

As the name suggests, this short trail runs alongside the river and through some forest. Dogs are welcome, and this trail is also wheelchair and stroller-friendly.

Wetland Spur Trail

• ½ mile | Easy to Moderate | Hike | Grass and Dirt

The Wetland Spur trail is a one-way trail that is just short of half a mile long, and it goes through woodland to a wetland with an observation deck. This walk will take around 15 minutes.

Reservable Shelters

There are three reservable shelters here:

• Mansion holds 100 people and has one grill with an outdoor kitchenette. There is a sink, electricity, a stone fireplace, a drinking fountain, an outdoor firepit and there is also a play area.
• Northern holds 120 people and has two grills, electricity, a stone fireplace, as well as a wood-burning stove. There is a sink as well as a small counter, an outdoor fire pit, and a brick patio. Playground equipment, large playfield, volleyball posts, and net.
• Nature Center Multipurpose Room is a meeting room with a maximum capacity of 99. ADA accessible.

Non-Reservable Shelters

Two areas of the park contain 11 non-reservable shelters.

• Oak Coves Picnic Area has picnic tables, grills, large playfields, and playground equipment. There are two shelters, each seating 64 people. ADA accessible.
• Big Meadows Picnic Area offers seven small shelters seating 16 each and two open shelters seating 64 each. They have grills, large playfields, and playground equipment, and are ADA-accessible.

About Clear Creek Metro Park

Clear Creek Metro Park is a nature preserve and is part of the Columbus and Franklin County Metro Parks system. The 4,729-acre Allen F Beck State Nature Preserve, contained within Clear Creek Metro Park is the largest in Ohio.

In general, the park is extremely rugged and has many steep ravines and cliff faces. There is an overlap of climate zones – the prairies in the west meet the Appalachian forests in the east.

More than 1,200 species of plants have been identified in Clear Creek, and more than 150 species of birds. You should look out for wild turkey, coyote, chipmunks, and maybe even the elusive bobcat!

Some sections of the park are kept closed to the public to preserve rare and endangered species, and although future development will provide more trails, these private sections will remain in place.

This area of Ohio is one of my favorites, year-round, but in the fall it is extremely beautiful.

Trails at Clear Creek Metro Park

There are 12 trails at Clear Creek, ranging from 0.3 miles to 2.5 miles, and categorized as Easy, Easy to Moderate, Moderate, Moderate to Difficult, and Difficult.

As many of these trails intersect each other, you can follow one, or combine two or three to make a longer and/or more varied hike.

Benua Loop Trail

• 1.9-miles | Moderate to Difficult | Hike | Dirt/Gravel

This trail is great for backpacking, birding, and fishing. This hike takes you on wide roads with outstanding scenery and water features, passing Lake Emily. You can expect this trial to take 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete.

Cemetery Ridge Trail

• 2.6-miles | Moderate | Hike | Dirt/Gravel

This trail starts from the Creekside Meadow Trail, crosses Clear Creek Road and then begins a steep climb to the top of the ridge, meeting the Chestnut Trail and finishing when it meets the Fern Trail. The approximate time to complete this trail is 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Chestnut Trail

• 2.2-miles | Difficult | Hike | Dirt/Gravel

A difficult, 2.2-mile one-way trail that passes through valleys, crosses forested ridges, and passes sandstone formations. Expect this trail to take just over an hour to complete.

Fern Trail

• 1.7-miles | Moderate to Difficult | Hike | Dirt

This is a loop trail that goes along a steep ridge and through a forest with a variety of trees and plants. This trail should take around 1 hour to complete.

Creekside Meadows Trail

• 1.7-miles | Easy | Hike | Pets | Grass

This easy one-way 1.7-mile hike follows the banks of Clear Creek through open fields. This trail will take approximately 55 minutes.

Lake Trail

• 0.9-miles | Moderate | Hike | Dirt

This trail does a loop through the woods, leading to an observation deck overlooking Lake Ramona. This hike will take about 35 minutes to complete.

Hemlock Trail

• 1.5-miles | Difficult | Hike | Dirt/Gravel

This is a one-way hike that descends and ascends a steep ravine. It goes through shady hemlock groves and a carpet of ferns. You can expect to complete this trail in around 45 minutes.

Activities at Clear Creek Metro Park

There are not too many activities beyond hiking at Clear Creek Metro Park as this is primarily a nature preserve. Along the trails, you can spot rare wildflowers, a variety of animals, and a host of bird species. Different seasons bring different flowers, animals, and birds to the park.

Fishing

There are access points located along Clear Creek Road, and fishing is available along the 5-acre Lake Ramona and from the dams at Lake Emily. Clear Creek is the only trout stream in southeast Ohio.

Fishing Rules

• There is no minimum length or daily bag limit on bluegill, redear, warmouth, or other sunfish species.
• For rainbow and brown trout and their subspecies, there is no minimum length, but there is a daily bag limit of 5 trout in any combination.
• For white bass, there is a minimum length of 10 inches and a daily bag limit of 25.

Picnicking

Picnic tables and grills are available at the Fern and Creekside Meadows areas. There is a shelter, grills, and restrooms at the Barnebey Hambleton Area.

Leashed dogs and cats are welcome in picnic areas.

About Rockbridge State Nature Preserve

Rockbridge State Nature Preserve is located in the Hocking Hills area of Hocking County. The preserve covers an area of 182 acres. The Rock Bridge originated millions of years ago when Ohio was under a warm, inland sea. The water flow carried fine and coarse-grained sand that settled at the bottom of the sea.

Over the centuries, the sand build-up thickened and compressed. When great pressure from beneath the Earth’s surface caused the land in eastern North America to rise, the Appalachian Mountains were formed. The inland sea drained away and revealed the rock layers.

Weather conditions over more centuries carved a deep recess in the mid-portion of the rock formation and created the natural bridge.

Rockbridge Falls

The Rockbridge Falls are beside the Rock Bridge. There is often not a lot of water flowing, but in the winter there can be some stunning icicles hanging from the rocks.

Trail

There is just one trail at Rockbridge State Nature Preserve, but it can be walked in three parts. Pets are not permitted within the preserve, and the trails are not wheelchair or stroller-friendly. Very young children need to be closely watched at all times on these trails.

• Connector Trail | 0.4-miles | Easy | Wooden Walkway

This is a short hike from the parking lot to access the park’s trail system. Follow a narrow wooden walkway into the Preserve.

• Natural Bridge Trail | 1-mile | Moderate | Dirt

This trail can be very muddy when wet. There are, however, a lot of exposed tree roots across the trail that you can step on to prevent slipping. The trail splits, and you can choose to go left or right – both directions will bring you to the bridge.

If you go left, you will reach the bridge. From there, you can either circle back, taking what would have been the right (or straight) split, or you can take a spur trail down to the Hocking River, which is an access point for kayakers.

By going right (or straight) at the split, you will find the trail splits again. To stay on the Natural Bridge Trail, you need to continue straight. If you want to extend your hike, you can take the right split to the Rockbridge Shelter Loop Trail.

• Rockbridge Shelter Trail | 0.75-miles | Moderate | Dirt

This is a loop trail that takes you through the southern portion of the preserve, passing by rock formations and an overhang cave. When you return to the start point, turn right to complete the Natural Bridge Trail.

About Clifton Gorge

The Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve is the most scenic gorge in western Ohio. The Little Miami River flows through the middle of the gorge and it was designated a scenic river in 1968. Further downstream is John Bryan State Park with extensive trails that give walkers the opportunity to see some stunning views of the Little Miami River.

There are many trees and wildflowers in this area and they look beautiful at all times of the year.

Here, you will also encounter animals such as bats, caterpillars, frogs, owls and ticks.

Clifton Gorge Rules of Use

There are some rules that visitors need to abide by. The rules are in place so that all visitors can enjoy Clifton Gorge:

• Open 1/2 hour before sunrise, closes 1/2 hour after sunset
• Stay on the designated trail at all times
• Pets are not permitted

Clifton Gorge Trails

There are three miles of hiking trails at Clifton Gorge:

• Gorge Trail – 1 mile
• Narrows Trail – 0.5 mile
• Orton Trail – 0.5 mile
• Rim Trail – 1 mile

From the entrance, a short trail leads to the gorge. From there, you can choose which trail to follow.

• The Gorge Trail descends to the banks of the Little Miami River and follows the Gorge Valley down to John Bryan State Park.
• Or you can take the Rim Trail, which follows a parallel route along the rim of the gorge.
• Alternatively, follow the Narrows Trail, which goes upstream where you can view the wildest part of the river as it passes through the narrowest part of the gorge.
• The Orton Trail is a small section of the Orton Memorial Trail, a 5-mile loop trail in John Bryan State Park.

About Glen Helen Nature Preserve

Glen Helen Nature Preserve is adjacent to the main Antioch College campus. Hugh Taylor Birch donated the initial 700-acre area to Antioch College in memory of his daughter, Helen Birch Bartlet, in 1929.

It is the largest private nature preserve in the region, being just over 1,000 acres in area, and it was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1965.

The beautiful Yellow Springs Creek gives the town its name, and the Creek can be viewed from many of the trails.

Hiking at Glen Helen Nature Preserve

With over 20 miles of eastern deciduous forest, Glen Helen is full of rustic trails as well as stone steps and wooden boardwalks that pass by streams and dense forests.

Depending on which trail you choose to tackle, you could expect to pass by the historic Yellow Springs, the Cascades waterfalls, The Grotto, Pine Forest, Covered Bridge, Pompey’s Pillar, and the Hopewell Indian Mound.

The trails are rated in difficulty. Some are suitable for children, and you can also take your dog on a leash on some of them.

Trails

We list some of the more popular trails at Glen Helen here.

Inman Trail at just over a mile long, is a moderately challenging loop trail that takes around 28 minutes to complete. Dogs on leashes are welcome, and it is also kid-friendly, can be muddy, and you will encounter lots of wildlife.

Glen Helen Loop Trail is 2½ miles of moderately challenging loop trail. This one takes just over an hour to complete. You can bring your dog on a leash, although it is probably a bit much for kids. You will pass by a lot of wildlife and nature.

Upper Birch Creek Trail is 1½ miles and winds above the banks of Yellow Springs Creek, as well as crossing several springs. Spring water is available along the trail, although it is untreated, so drink it at your own risk! No dogs on this trail. Of course, you will encounter plenty of nature and wildlife along the way.

Fire Road Trail is 2 miles long and passes by the Pine Forest and Horace Mann Monument. Dogs on a leash are welcome, and of course, there will be the expected nature and wildlife throughout the trail.

Facilities at Glen Helen Nature Preserve

There is a lot to do at Glen Helen, other than hiking. There are some education centers for both kids and adults, and the focus of this preserve is very much on raptors, along with the ecological systems of Ohio.

The Trailside Museum is the weekend welcome center for Glen Helen. The displays and exhibits allow visitors to get an understanding of, as well as a closeness to, nature. Here is where you can also pick up trail maps and gear.

The Glen Helen Raptor Center

The Raptor Center is a rehabilitation center for injured birds. The center has the goal of not only healing them but also releasing them back into the wild. Visitors can view the Ohio native birds of prey species kept in outdoor enclosures.

You can hike to the Raptor Center, following one of the trails, or drive straight there. The center is open in winter from 9 am to 5 pm, in spring and fall from 9 am to 6 pm, and in summer from 9 am to 7 pm. Find more information on the Glen Helen Official Site

Glen Helen Nature Preserve has a lot of programs throughout the year, including, but not limited to, guided trails, bird-watching, etc. Some examples of the programs you may find at any given time are Spring Beauty Saunter: Wildflower Walks. Native Plant Swap: you are invited to offer plants you have to donate or swap! Prairie and River Walk: look out for the native birds! Visit Hayden Falls

Hayden Falls is located within Griggs Nature Preserve. It is near the Scioto River, alongside Hayden Run Road.

Hayden Falls Park is a 2-acre park managed by Columbus Recreation and Parks. There is a small parking lot and a wooden path surrounded by trees that leads to the 35-foot waterfall. There are some steps to get down to the small observation deck.

Hayden Run Falls

Once you take the steps down to the boardwalk, you are instantly transported to a nature wonderland. The walk is about a 0.3-mile trip. It is a short one but is moderately trafficked, so you will see other people. The well-constructed boardwalk makes this a family-friendly walk, however, you do have to take steps to reach the boardwalk.

You can visit Hayden Run Falls any time of the year, but visiting after rainfall will give you the best viewing experience. After a decent rain, Hayden Run Falls crest is about 30 feet. Visitors often describe Hayden Run as a surprisingly wild waterfall.

Tips for Visiting Hayden Run Park

• Please use caution on the steps and the boardwalk if wet. If there has been a recent large rainfall or is currently raining be sure to be mindful of your surroundings as water can rise quickly. 
• Be careful when leaving the small parking lot, it can be hard to pull out or back out onto the busy Hayden Run Road. 
• Come back and visit the Hayden Run Waterfall each season and after a large rain to see how it changes. 
• The “hike” down the steps and the boardwalk to the falls, is relatively easy and short. It would make a great outing for a family if you are limited on time. 
• If there has been no rain, the waterfall often dries up and you might not see a flow over the rocks.
• We have seen leashed dogs at Hayden Falls, so we assume it is dog-friendly. We could not find anything that told us otherwise.

Visit Yellow Springs Hiking Area

Yellow Springs is a town located in Greene County, Ohio. The total population of Yellow Springs is under 5000. Yellow Springs takes its name from a nearby natural spring at Glen Helen Nature Preserve with waters rich in iron which leaves a yellowish coloring on the rocks. 

There are numerous options for hiking at Yellow Springs. In this article we are highlighting five trails at Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve, four at Glen Helen Nature Preserve, and three at John Bryan State Park.

Trails at Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve

Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve is a 268-acre preserve that works to protect the spectacular dolomite and limestone gorge here. This gorge encompasses a 2-mile stretch of the Little Miami State and National Scenic Rivers. 

Pittsburg-Cincinnati Stage Coach and John L. Rich Loop

4.4-mile loop | Moderate | Hike

There are some muddy spots on this trail, and some tree roots hikers should watch out for. The best time to visit this trail is March through October. No dogs. This trail will take approximately 1.5 hours to complete. There are offshoots along the way that can make this trail longer or shorter.

John L. Rich and North Rim Trail Loop

2.6-mile loop | Easy | Hike

This trail has parts that can be very slippery when wet. Beautiful views of the Gorge and the scenic Little Miami River. No dogs. This trail should take around 1 hour to complete.

John L. Rich Trail

5.2-mile out-and-back | Easy | Hike

This trail can be muddy, but there are rocks and logs to help navigate these areas. Running water and beautiful scenery are along this trail. You can expect to complete this in around 1 hour and 45 minutes.

Orton Memorial Trail and North Rim Trail

5-mile out-and-back | Moderate | Hike

This out-and-back trail is very scenic. You can expect it to take around 1 hour and 40 minutes to complete.

Orton Memorial Monument

2.2-mile loop | Easy | Hike

Here you can choose between the upper or lower rim. The upper rim is smooth and can be navigated by those with restrictions. The lower rim runs along the river with rocks, rushing water, and uphill climbs. There are some steps on both options. This trail should take around 45 minutes to complete.

The park opens 30 minutes before sunrise and closes 30 minutes after sunset. Pets are not permitted and remember to stay on the designated trail at all times.

Trails at Glen Helen Nature Preserve

Glen Helen Nature Preserve is over 1125 acres and is accessible by a network of footpaths. This area is perfect if you are heading to the area for Yellow Springs Hiking.

Glen Helen Multi-Loop Trail

2.5-mile loop | Moderate | Hike | Dogs on Leash

The Glen Helen Multi-trail loop features a waterfall. The trail consists of gravel and blazed paths as well as stream crossings and views of cascades. This trail welcomes dogs on a leash. 

Glen Helen, Little Miami and Clifton Gorge

11.6-mile loop | Moderate | Hike | Dogs on Leash

The Glen Helen, Little Miami, and Clifton Gorge features a waterfall and the Gorge is the highlight of this trail. The best time to visit is March through November. You can expect to spend around 4 hours and 30 minutes to complete this trail.

Glen Helen and Pine Forest Loop

3.1-mile loop | Moderate | Hike | Dogs on Leash

The Glen Helen Pine Forest Loop offers well-maintained paths, picturesque waterfalls, and peaceful surroundings. This trail should take around 1 hour and 10 minutes to complete.

Inman Trail

1.2-mile loop | Moderate | Hike | Dogs on Leash

You can expect to see a variety of wildlife and birds along this trail. It should take around 30 minutes to complete.

John Bryan State Park

John Bryan State Park is a must-visit in the area.  It is a 752-acre park. Ten trails provide beautiful options for Yellow Springs Hiking. Some of the hiking trails in this park do have wheelchair accessibility. 

In addition to traditional trails, they also feature a storybook trail at this site. This is great fun for young children! It makes for an interesting walk or “hike”. Besides hiking, there is also rock climbing, rappelling, and fishing in this park. 

Arboretum Trail

1.1-mile loop | Easy | Hike | Bike | Dogs on Leash

The  Arboretum Trail is ideal for hiking beginners or just for a peaceful walk. You can expect to take about 20 minutes to complete this trail. 

Lower Shelter House Loop

1.6-mile loop | Easy | Hike | Dogs on Leash

You will find beautiful views along this narrow trail with slippery areas in wet weather. You can expect this trail to take around 40 minutes to complete.

South Gorge Trail and North Rim Trail

3.1-mile loop | Moderate | Hike | Dogs on Leash

This trail offers a combination of boardwalk, rocky terrain, and bridges and can get muddy in places. This trail should take about 1 hour and 10 minutes to complete.

Greene County Parks and Trails

More hiking is available on the Greene County Trails. This area is a little further out from Yellow Springs and closer to Xenia. There are five main trails:

• Creekside Trail | 11.7 miles
• Wright Brothers-Huffman Prairie Bikeway | 4.6 miles
• Ohio to Erie Trail | 14 miles
• The Little Miami Scenic Trail | 15.9 miles
• Xenia-Jamestown Connector Trail | 15.5 miles

Little Miami Scenic Trail

The Little Miami Scenic Trail is one of the longest multi-use trails in the US. The trail is 78 miles long and runs from Springfield, Ohio to Anderson Township in southwestern Ohio. The part of the trail that runs through Greene County is 15.9 miles. There are various places to park along the trail, and an online trail map is available – you do have to register to view the map – registration is free.
