There is ample parking at the Buttermilk Falls Trailhead, and the scenic overlook is a short walk across Buttermilk Falls Parkway.

The overlook is a wooded deck providing a view of the geology of North Chagrin Reservation.

The water from Buttermilk Creek travels to the Chagrin River, which flows into Lake Erie.

Nearby attractions include the North Chagrin Nature Center, Squire’s Castle, and North Chagrin Oxbow Lagoon.

Constructed in 1887, the stone dam provided water power for the Harbison Flour Mill, which was just behind it. Cedar Cliff Falls replaced a previous dam that was destroyed in a flood. Work was halted at the flour mill in 1917.

This manmade waterfall usually has plentiful falling water. It rivals the beauty of any natural waterfall! At around 30 feet wide and 40 feet high, the stone wall is 2 to 2½ feet thick. The stone wall’s downstream face is vertical, and the upstream face has a 2:1 slope. The stone wall is curved to absorb the water pressure behind it.

Visitors can park at Cedar Cliff Falls if they don’t wish to hike. Hikers can park near the Log House and take the 2.5-mile out-and-back trail via the Gorge Trail and Rim Trail. This is an easy trail and should take around 50 minutes to complete. Dogs on a leash are welcome here.

About Hocking Hills

Hocking Hills is an area of the Allegheny Plateau in Appalachian Ohio. It is situated primarily in Hocking County and features gorges, cliffs, rock shelters, and waterfalls. The topography of the region is dominated by Blackhand Sandstone that forms high cliffs and narrow, deep gorges.

The region has mild weather, averaging around 40 inches of rain and 175 sunny days per year. Hocking Hills is a stunningly amazing region that is home to parks, caves, nature preserves, a host of retail shops, and plenty of places to eat and stay.

In this article we will be taking a glimpse into many of the places to visit, things to do, activities, shopping, eateries, and places to stay.

State Parks and Preserves in Hocking Hills

The main park in the region is Hocking Hills State Park. Within this park are Ash Cave, Cantwell Cliffs, Cedar Falls, Conkles Hollow, Old Man’s Cave, Rock House, and Hemlock Bridge Trail to Whispering Cave.

Old Man’s Cave

Old Man’s Cave is the most popular of all the Hocking areas. The Upper Falls is the start of the Grandma Gatewood Trail which is a 6-mile trail connecting three popular areas: Old Man’s Cave to Cedar Falls to Ash Cave. This trail is also part of the Buckeye Trail as well as part of two national systems.

Ash Cave

Ash Cave is the most spectacular feature of Hocking Hills State Park. Additionally, it is the largest and most impressive recess cave in Ohio.

Cedar Falls

Cedar Falls is the greatest waterfall in the Hocking Hills region in terms of volume of water. Specifically, it is Queer Creek that falls over the rocks here. The staircase that descends from the parking lot to Cedar Falls, named Democracy Steps, was designed by Japanese artist and architect Akio Hizume.

Conkles Hollow

Conkles Hollow is a rugged, rocky gorge – one of the deepest in Ohio. The valley floor is covered with ferns and wildflowers.

Cantwell Cliffs

Cantwell Cliffs is not such a well-visited part of Hocking Hills as it is quite remote. However, many consider Cantwell Cliffs to be one of the most picturesque areas in the region.

Rock House

Rock House is the only true cave in Hocking Hills State Park. It is situated midway up a 150-foot cliff. As it remains cool during the summer, it is a popular destination.

Rock Bridge

There are three such formations in Ohio, and Rock Bridge is the largest of them. The 100-foot-long Blackhand sandstone bridge formation rises 45 feet above the bottom of the gorge.

Clear Creek Metro Park

Clear Creek Metro Park covers over 5,300 acres of woodlands and cliffs, ravines, and creeks. There are more than 2,200 species of plants and animals. Most of Clear Creek is in the Hocking Hills region; however, a portion of it runs into Lancaster in Fairfield County.

Lake Logan and Lake Logan Marina

Lake Logan covers 400 acres and has a 530-foot beach for sunbathers and swimmers. Activities include canoeing, kayaking, fishing, and boating. The Lake Logan Marina is part of Lake Logan Park.

Lake Hope State Park

Lake Hope is in the Hocking-Vinton area of the state. Here visitors can enjoy camping, swimming, and canoeing.

Tar Hollow State Park

Tar Hollow has a 15-acre lake called Pine Lake. Activities at the lake include fishing, swimming, beach, and paddle boat rentals. In this park are some of the best shelter houses in the region for large family or group outings.

Hocking State Forest

In the Hocking State Forest, plant species that are commonly found further north mix with the typically southern species providing an unusual variety of plant life and associated wildlife.

Wayne National Forest

Wayne National Forest is the only National Forest in Ohio and it covers three areas – Athens, Hocking, and Perry Counties. There are large areas of reforestation here as large parts of the area were strip-mined in the late 1800s. There is a huge variety of plants and wildlife in this forest.

About Devil’s Bathtub

The Devil’s Bathtub is along the Old Man’s Cave hiking trail. It is a natural phenomenon of a series of pools along a narrow stream. The pools are of different depths, but the deepest one is just 2 meters.

This a unique waterfall due to its formation, thanks to the other nearby waterfalls that have been falling for thousands of years, the water has created a bowl in the sandstone. The Devil’s Bathtub is also a level waterfall, and the water not only moves quickly, but it creates a whirlpool as it moves.

It should be noted that it can be dangerous to jump into the Devil’s Bathtub.

Visiting Devil’s Bathtub

Winter – In extreme weather, the water freezes, and all the waterfalls in Hocking Hills turn to stunning, static ice.

Spring – As the winter ice melts, the waterfalls, including Devil’s Bathtub, become very lively. This is when they are at their most awesome, but also their most dangerous!

Summer – Hocking Hills is a joy in the summer with warm temperatures. Often, the waterfalls are either very slow-moving or not falling at all during the summer!

Fall – The beautiful colors of fall and cooler temperatures make this one of the best seasons to visit. It is always best just after a rainfall.

About Glen Helen Nature Preserve

Glen Helen Nature Preserve is adjacent to the main Antioch College campus. Hugh Taylor Birch donated the initial 700-acre area to Antioch College in memory of his daughter, Helen Birch Bartlet, in 1929.

It is the largest private nature preserve in the region, being just over 1,000 acres in area, and it was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1965.

The beautiful Yellow Springs Creek gives the town its name, and the Creek can be viewed from many of the trails.

Hiking at Glen Helen Nature Preserve

With over 20 miles of eastern deciduous forest, Glen Helen is full of rustic trails as well as stone steps and wooden boardwalks that pass by streams and dense forests.

Depending on which trail you choose to tackle, you could expect to pass by the historic Yellow Springs, the Cascades waterfalls, The Grotto, Pine Forest, Covered Bridge, Pompey’s Pillar, and the Hopewell Indian Mound.

The trails are rated in difficulty. Some are suitable for children, and you can also take your dog on a leash on some of them.

Trails

We list some of the more popular trails at Glen Helen here.

Inman Trail at just over a mile long, is a moderately challenging loop trail that takes around 28 minutes to complete. Dogs on leashes are welcome, and it is also kid-friendly, can be muddy, and you will encounter lots of wildlife.

Glen Helen Loop Trail is 2½ miles of moderately challenging loop trail. This one takes just over an hour to complete. You can bring your dog on a leash, although it is probably a bit much for kids. You will pass by a lot of wildlife and nature.

Upper Birch Creek Trail is 1½ miles and winds above the banks of Yellow Springs Creek, as well as crossing several springs. Spring water is available along the trail, although it is untreated, so drink it at your own risk! No dogs on this trail. Of course, you will encounter plenty of nature and wildlife along the way.

Fire Road Trail is 2 miles long and passes by the Pine Forest and Horace Mann Monument. Dogs on a leash are welcome, and of course, there will be the expected nature and wildlife throughout the trail.

Facilities at Glen Helen Nature Preserve

There is a lot to do at Glen Helen, other than hiking. There are some education centers for both kids and adults, and the focus of this preserve is very much on raptors, along with the ecological systems of Ohio.

The Trailside Museum is the weekend welcome center for Glen Helen. The displays and exhibits allow visitors to get an understanding of, as well as a closeness to, nature. Here is where you can also pick up trail maps and gear.

The Glen Helen Raptor Center

The Raptor Center is a rehabilitation center for injured birds. The center has the goal of not only healing them but also releasing them back into the wild. Visitors can view the Ohio native birds of prey species kept in outdoor enclosures.

You can hike to the Raptor Center, following one of the trails, or drive straight there. The center is open in winter from 9 am to 5 pm, in spring and fall from 9 am to 6 pm, and in summer from 9 am to 7 pm. Find more information on the Glen Helen Official Site

Glen Helen Nature Preserve has a lot of programs throughout the year, including, but not limited to, guided trails, bird-watching, etc. Some examples of the programs you may find at any given time are Spring Beauty Saunter: Wildflower Walks. Visit Hayden Falls

Hayden Falls is located within Griggs Nature Preserve. It is near the Scioto River, alongside Hayden Run Road.

Hayden Falls Park is a 2-acre park managed by Columbus Recreation and Parks. There is a small parking lot and a wooden path surrounded by trees that leads to the 35-foot waterfall. There are some steps to get down to the small observation deck.

Hayden Run Falls

Once you take the steps down to the boardwalk, you are instantly transported to a nature wonderland. The walk is about a 0.3-mile trip. It is a short one but is moderately trafficked, so you will see other people. The well-constructed boardwalk makes this a family-friendly walk, however, you do have to take steps to reach the boardwalk.

You can visit Hayden Run Falls any time of the year, but visiting after rainfall will give you the best viewing experience. After a decent rain, Hayden Run Falls crest is about 30 feet. Visitors often describe Hayden Run as a surprisingly wild waterfall.

Tips for Visiting Hayden Run Park

• Please use caution on the steps and the boardwalk if wet. If there has been a recent large rainfall or is currently raining be sure to be mindful of your surroundings as water can rise quickly. 
• Be careful when leaving the small parking lot, it can be hard to pull out or back out onto the busy Hayden Run Road. 
• Come back and visit the Hayden Run Waterfall each season and after a large rain to see how it changes. 
• The “hike” down the steps and the boardwalk to the falls, is relatively easy and short. It would make a great outing for a family if you are limited on time. 
• If there has been no rain, the waterfall often dries up and you might not see a flow over the rocks.
• We have seen leashed dogs at Hayden Falls, so we assume it is dog-friendly. We could not find anything that told us otherwise.

About Hocking Hills Waterfalls

Hocking Hills State Park has some amazing hiking trails, seven of which pass by a waterfall. Some of the falls here are not massive or dramatic, but waterfalls whatever their size can be tranquil or thunderingly stunning! Visiting a waterfall is always a good idea after a good rainfall.

Cedar Falls

Cedar Falls is the largest waterfall in terms of volume in the Hocking region. The water comes from Queer Creek tumbling over the Blackhand stone, and after rainfall, this waterfall displays an amazing force of water power. In the mid-1800s there was a grist mill above the falls to make use of the water for grinding grain.

The Cedar Falls Trail is around ½ mile long and is a fairly difficult hike with steps. It is a one-way trail with bridges and unique rock formations as well as the Falls. As you can see from the photos above, Cedar Falls is amazing in all seasons of the year!

Cantwell Cliffs

Cantwell Cliffs is a trail and waterfall that is remote and out-of-the-way. The trail is a rugged, fairly difficult hike comprised of two loops, each of which is a mile long. You can expect this hike to take between one hour and one hour and fifteen minutes.

Conkle’s Hollow

The Conkle’s Hollow waterfall gently cascades. It is located at the edge of what is believed to be the deepest gorge in Ohio. The waterfall dries up in the summer months, so it is best to visit this waterfall after a period of sustained rain.

Ash Cave

These Falls are best seen in the spring after the snow of winter has melted away. In fact, the best time to visit is around March and April, as this is when the waterfall is at its best. In the wintertime, when the temperatures are sub-zero, the waterfall will freeze over and turn into a large chunk of ice.

This waterfall is one of the nicest in Hocking Hills and it falls at a height of around 90 feet.

Old Man’s Cave

This waterfall is along the Old Man’s Cave trail, and it receives millions of visitors a year. The waterfall is downstream from the upper falls and it slides down a rockface and drops down into the creek below, passing through the Devil’s Bathtub

At between 20-30 feet high, this waterfall is very scenic. It also has the added attraction of not being quite as busy as the upstream.

Rockbridge Falls

This waterfall flows over a natural bridge and this is why it has the name, Rockbridge Falls. Whilst this isn’t the heaviest flowing waterfall in Hocking Hills, it is a wonderful waterfall to visit as it is very photogenic. This is a small waterfall, but due to the stunning area, it is a favorite with many people.

It is advised that to see it at its best, the best time of the year to come is in April, after the snows of winter have melted and there has been some rain.

Waterfalls In Northeast Ohio

Great Falls of Tinker’s Creek

This is one of the widest waterfalls in Ohio, measuring just over 80 feet wide. This waterfall is located in Viaduct Park. The trail is paved and is suitable for people with walking aids and strollers.

The waterfall is great all year round, but a top tip for you is to visit in the winter when this waterfall freezes over and looks spectacular.

Berea Falls

Berea Falls is a double-tiered cascade on the Rocky River. Above the falls are some historic arched bridges, and below the falls is a narrow gorge. Berea Falls is situated in the Rocky River Reservation.

This waterfall can be enjoyed from a distance, or if visitors prefer, they can follow the short trail down to the waterfall for a closer look.

Chagrin Falls Waterfall

This waterfall is in downtown Chagrin Falls, so no hiking is required! It isn’t just the waterfall that is charming, Chagrin Falls itself is a nice town that has plenty of amenities for visitors.

Paine Falls

Paine Falls is part of the Lake Metroparks, and it is stunning with two tiers and a 30-foot drop. There is a short trail to get to the waterfall. This trail is listed as Difficult, although it is less than ¼ mile long.

East Falls

East Falls is in Cascade Park, and access is stroller and wheelchair-friendly. This is a unique waterfall as the water begins on the Black River and slips its way down a manmade spillway. The water then travels further down to a second drop.

There are actually two waterfalls in this park, West Falls is the other waterfall, and they are both worth a visit. To get to West Falls, you need to take a short drive along the road, but it is worth it.

Day’s Dam Waterfall

This stunning waterfall is on the Black River at Black River Reservation. It is around 10 feet wide and over 40 feet tall. Visitors should follow the Waterfall Loop Trail to see this waterfall.

Brandywine Falls

This is the most popular waterfall in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. In fact, it can be argued that it is one of the most popular waterfalls in the entire state of Ohio. This waterfall is very easy to access, and it has a very impressive 60-foot drop. A tip is to visit this waterfall straight after heavy rain, when you hear the crashing of the water before you see it – great for anticipation!

This waterfall has two observation decks for people to take photographs or simply marvel at Mother Nature. The top deck gives a bird’s-eye view of the waterfall, and it is wheelchair friendly. The lower observation deck does have some steps to take before you reach it.

Buttermilk Falls

This is not a designated trail, and it is not maintained by the national park; however, it is hidden away and is definitely worth a visit. It is an easy path to get to the waterfall, and the walk is around 5 miles. The key is hiking to Blue Hen Falls, and there will be a signpost that says that the trail is finished. Carry on past the signpost and follow the path along the river.

You will have to cross the river a couple of times, but there are plenty of rocks to skip across, and the water is quite shallow. As you go further down the path, you will find the canyon and this gorgeous waterfall.

Waterfall at The Gorge Metro Park

This is a manmade waterfall; in fact, it is actually a dam. However, it is a really nice waterfall that is quite steep, and the water flows through here at a rapid speed. It is very easy to get to as it is a quick hike from the parking lot. The view you get from the waterfall is really nice, and longer trails are available in this area as well.

Lanterman’s Falls

This is a great waterfall to visit, as you can combine a visit to the waterfall with a visit to the mill as well. The mill is open from May through October, but please phone ahead to check the opening times. The waterfall is located right next to Lanterman’s Mill in Mill Creek MetroParks and is arguably one of the best waterfalls to photograph and paint in the area.

Waterfalls In Central Ohio

Hayden Run Falls

This waterfall is located in the Griggs Nature Reserve in Dublin. Dublin is a suburb of Columbus, so this is quite an easy place to visit by car. This waterfall is accessible to people of all skill and mobility levels, as it is just a short walk from the parking lot.

The observation platform is an easy walk; however, anyone with limited mobility may find it difficult to get to the waterfall because there are steps. This is a lovely waterfall and is well worth a visit if you’re in the area.

Rock Mill Waterfall

Rock Mill Waterfall is on the Hocking River near Rock Mill, which is more than two centuries old and has been restored. Although not large, the waterfall flows into a scenic gorge. Above the waterfall is the Rock Mill Covered Bridge. This waterfall is in Rock Mill Park in Lancaster.

Indian Run Falls

This is a beautiful hidden gem in Dublin. The site features a gorgeous stream, cascades, and a waterfall.

What makes Indian Run Falls so special is the pristine waterfalls and streams. The area used to be home to the Wyandot Tribe. The city of Dublin provided access to the area by adding trails, observation decks, a shelter house, and a walking bridge.

Waterfalls In Southeast Ohio

Ash Cave

The waterfall at Ash Cave is best in the spring after the snow of winter melts away. In fact, the best time to visit is around March and April, as this is when the waterfall is at its best. In the wintertime, when the temperatures are sub-zero, the waterfall will freeze over and turn into a large chunk of ice. This waterfall is one of the nicest in Hocking Hills, and it falls at a height of around 90 feet. The cave itself is stunning, and the waterfall really does complement it well.

Cedar Falls

This waterfall is in the stunning Hocking Hills State Park. This is the top waterfall in the park, and it is the most photographed waterfall in Ohio. It is over 50 feet tall and is the largest waterfall in Hocking Hills. The hike to the waterfall is breathtaking.

Hikers walk through a stunning forest with an array of flowers and animals that call it home. There are also the remains of an old mill that stood above the falls in the 1830s.

Conkles Hollow Waterfall

Conkles Hollow is a must-visit when you are in the Hocking Hills area. This is one of our favorite places in that area. There are two trails at Conkles Hollow. There is the rim trail and the lower trail.

As you make your way to the end of the lower trail, you will find a 20-foot waterfall.  The size of this waterfall will vary depending on recent rainfall. There is NO swimming or wading allowed near the waterfall. If it has rained recently, you should notice many waterfalls cascading down over the sandstone cliffs.

Twin Falls at Chapel Cave Trail

Chapel Cave Trail in Hocking Hills is a bridle trail, but hiking is allowed here. The trail begins at the Hocking Hills State Forest Rock Climbing and Rappelling area parking lot and follows the Long Hollow stream. After about a mile, the trail heads uphill to a rock outcropping, which is poorly marked. Turn right at the outcropping to the very large cave, also known as 21 Horse Cave.

If there has been recent rain, the twin falls can be seen toward the end of the trail. This trail can be very muddy!

Waterfalls in Southwest Ohio

Ludlow Falls

This waterfall is one of the easiest waterfalls to find as it is located by the side of the road. However, do not let it put you off that it is by the side of the road, as this is arguably one of the best waterfalls in the entire area. The falls are located under a highway bridge, and it is nearly 60 feet wide. You can also get into the creek if you go down some stairs.

Fallsville Falls

Fallsville Falls is located in a town that was actually abandoned back in the day! There is not much of the old town left as it has simply fallen into disrepair. However, whilst the locals decided to abandon the area, the waterfall that is here is stunning.

The trail to get to the waterfall is very easy, and it is only a 10-15 minute walk. It isn’t the highest of waterfalls, but it is beautiful and well worth a visit if you’re in the area.

Cedar Cliff Falls

Cedar Cliff Falls is on the east side of Indian Mound Reserve. This is a man-made dam that was constructed in 1887 for a flour mill that existed there. The dam is around 30 feet wide and 40 feet high. Hikers can enjoy a 2½ mile out-and-back trail consisting of the Gorge Trail and the Rim Trail. Use the parking area near Log House. If you would like to see the falls without the hike, use the Cedar Cliff Falls parking area.

Charleston Falls Preserve

Charleston Falls Preserve is in Tipp City and covers an area of 216 acres of prairie and forests. The waterfall is unusual, originating from underground springs to create a stream that falls 37 feet over rock strata, and towards the Great Miami River.

Englewood MetroPark

By following the green trail at Englewood MetroPark in Vandalia, visitors will pass three waterfalls: Martindale, Patty, and Oaks. If you wish to hike the complete loop, it is 3.8 miles and should take around 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Greenville Falls

Greenville Falls is a wide cascade that falls 20 feet down Greenville Creek in the Greenville Falls State Scenic River Area. In this same park is the site of an old mill, a gorge, and a natural limestone arch.

About Cedar Falls

Cedar Falls is the grandest waterfall by volume in the Hocking Hills area! Queer Creek tumbles over the Blackhand sandstone displaying the awesome force that is water power.

A grist mill was built in the mid-1800s and is situated above the falls. It utilized water power for grinding grain.

Cedar Falls was wrongly named by early white settlers who mistook the stately hemlocks for cedars! A well-maintained picnic area, as well as restrooms are located in the parking area above the falls.

Hiking Around Cedar Falls

Cedar Falls is one of the major hiking trails in Hocking Hills State Park in Southern Ohio. This path is around a half-mile long. This is a strenuous walk with plenty of steps.

It is a one-way trail system with a waterfall, bridges, and interesting rock formations. Halfway along the trail, there is a seasonal waterfall. This can be reached by going down some steps and along a dirt track. When hikers get to this area, they can continue along the one-way system through the rock formations and up a series of stairs. This hike has a moderate incline, steps, and steeper terrain.

Hikers must stay on the marked trail. Pets are welcome on this trail, provided they are on a leash. No wading or swimming is allowed in the waterfall.

PRO TIP: Parking can be difficult. If you love to hike, you can park at Ash Cave and hike 2 miles (one way) to Cedar Falls. We did this on our last visit and loved it. It was well worth the hike! The trail is mostly dirt and rock and has lots of ups and downs, but there are many people.

Democracy Steps at Cedar Falls

The designer of the Democracy Steps, Akio Hizume, wanted the 100 steps not to be a challenging task or chore, but simply to be pleasant and relaxing. Generations of visitors can become one with the natural rhythm of the architecture and the precise disciplines of mathematics.

The Fibonacci sequence and the one-dimensional Penrose lattice heavily influenced the designer concerning the flow and creativity of the Democracy Steps.

About Ash Cave

Ash Cave has a horseshoe-shaped rim that spans 700 feet. There is also a runoff waterfall. Ash Cave is open year-round and offers natural beauty in all seasons.

Located in the Hocking Hills State Park, Ash Cave is named for the large amounts of ash that the early settlers had discovered within the cave system. It is still a mystery where this ash came from. One pile of ash found here was over thirty feet wide and three feet deep. 

The early settlers used this cave as a church. The Pulpit Rock is still there at the opening of the cave.

Hiking

Ash Cave is one of the 7 major hiking trails in Hocking Hills. This trail is around half a mile long, and for the average walker, it will take around 40 minutes to complete.

Hikers have to go one way, and wheelchair users can also go along this route. This is an asphalt trail through a gorge with cliff walls. Halfway along the trail, there is a recess cave and a fantastic seasonal waterfall.

After reaching this area, Hikers (not in wheelchairs) must continue along the one-way system and up a flight of steps to the rim trail. This trail leads back to the parking lot. This path is clearly marked with signs. Dogs on leashes are welcome.

The trail to Ash Cave is paved. This helps people of all abilities who wish to visit this wonderful cave. Wheelchairs and strollers will have no problems with this hike.
