About State Parks in Northeast Ohio

All state parks in Ohio are maintained by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). They are also all free to enter, with no parking fees. Across the state, parks vary greatly in their landscape, facilities, and activities. The state parks in northeast Ohio have a range of landscapes, including heavily forested areas, wetlands, and coastal zones with many trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding.

The Rubber City Jazz & Blues Festival is in early September. Musicians and bands play at 10 venues in Akron for this festival across three evenings.

The Rubber City Jazz & Blues Festival brings these music genres to the community. Although the festival has featured world-renowned artists, a major focus is to platform the talent from the Akron-metro area.

These performances are free, usually with the exception of the headliner’s performance. Tickets for that are available online.

About Ohio

Ohio has a population of nearly 11.8 million. Its capital and largest city is Columbus, with other large cities Cleveland, Cincinnati, Dayton, Akron, and Toledo.

The nickname of Ohio ‘The Buckeye State’ derives from the buckeye trees that grow along the Ohio River Valley. The small nuts the trees produce resemble the eye of a deer. It is considered that carrying a buckeye nut in your pocket is good luck.

The flag of Ohio was officially adopted in 1902 and is the only state flag that is not rectangular.

Northwest Ohio has a coastline along Lake Erie. The largest city in the northwest is Toledo, with other cities such as Sandusky and Put in Bay.

Toledo

Toledo is in the north of the northwest region of Ohio, and it sits on the Maumee River and Maumee Bay area of Lake Erie.

The Downtown Akron Sakura Festival will celebrate spring and cherry blossom trees in early April.

The annual Downtown Akron Sakura Festival is a free event that welcomes spring and celebrates the over 450 cherry blossom trees along the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail. 

The festival features art demonstrations, sushi, sake, traditional Japanese music, a bike ride, a story walk, origami, Ikebana, and kimono and bonsai vendors. 

Events span the Towpath Trail, Mustill Store, Ohio & Erie Canal Park, Locks 1-3, and the Towpath Trailhead at Spaghetti Warehouse.

About the Downtown Sakura Festival

In celebration of spring and the more than 450 cherry blossom trees that bloom along the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail in downtown Akron, the 4th annual Downtown Akron Sakura Festival is a free event that will bring together the city of Akron and Japanese culture.

The cherry blossom trees were planted in 2011 and 2012 by the Japanese Association of Northeast Ohio (JANO) in partnership with the city of Akron. The work it took to plant the trees symbolizes “the hearts of the Japanese people and creates a place of relaxation for people of all regions.” 

Presented by Downtown Akron Partnership (DAP) and JANO, the festival will feature art demonstrations, food and drink like sushi and sake, traditional Japanese music, a bike ride, and a story walk. 

There will also be craft activities like origami and Ikebana, which is Japanese flower arranging. Kimono and bonsai vendors will be there, too!

Events will take place along the Towpath Trail in downtown Akron, Mustill Store, Ohio & Erie Canal Park, Locks 1-3, and the Towpath Trailhead at Spaghetti Warehouse.

Acres Of Fun

When is the Total Eclipse in Ohio?

Ohio will see the total eclipse on April 8, 2024, between the hours of approximately 3:08 pm and 3:15 pm. The duration will usually be around 2 to 4 minutes. The moon will start to cover the sun at around 1:50 pm and the sun will be completely uncovered by about 4:30 pm.

The last total eclipse seen in Ohio was in 1806, and the next one will be in 2099.

Which Ohio Cities are on the Path of Totality?

The Path of Totality is expected to be about 124 miles wide and will stretch across 13 states, including a line through Ohio from the southwest to the northeast regions.

Cities and regions just outside of this path will experience a partial eclipse, which is still an amazing spectacle!

Eye Protection for the Solar Eclipse

This is a quote from the NASA website about watching a solar eclipse:

When watching a partial or annular solar eclipse directly with your eyes, you must look through safe solar viewing glasses (“eclipse glasses”) or a safe handheld solar viewer at all times. Eclipse glasses are NOT regular sunglasses; regular sunglasses, no matter how dark, are not safe for viewing the Sun.

Fun Facts About the 2024 Solar Eclipse

• This will be the first total solar eclipse in the continental U.S. in 7 years.
• A solar eclipse occurs when the Sun, the Moon, and Earth are aligned, or in syzygy.
• A solar eclipse only happens at New Moon, but not at every New Moon.
• Everyone in the continental U.S. will be able to see at least a partial eclipse.
• This eclipse will be the most-viewed ever.
• Totality is safe to look at.

The Next Total Eclipses Worldwide

If you want to chase total eclipses, the next ones that are due in the 2020s are:

• August 12, 2026 – Greenland, Iceland, and Spain
• August 2, 2027 – Spain, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and Somalia.
• July 22, 2028 – Australia and New Zealand.

Spain has the extremely rare bonus of having a total eclipse two years running!

Ride a Christmas Train in Ohio

We all know the story of the Polar Express. If you do not, we need to catch you up! You can buy the classic Christmas movie or the Polar Express book on Amazon.  There is one officially trademarked Polar Express Ohio, but there are also several other Christmas-themed or Holiday-themed train rides in Ohio.

Be sure to grab your favorite pair of Christmas pajamas and your comfy Christmas slippers to make your ride complete! As a bonus, most of these train rides in Ohio provide you with cookies and cocoa! So they have got the snack covered! 

Generally, these Christmas train rides in Ohio sell out quickly and pretty far in advance, so plan accordingly. Some operators open ticket sales months in advance. Start planning your strategy for which Christmas train ride you want to take, starting in August (or before)! Yes, that is correct, you need to think about it that early in the year. Usually, holiday train ride dates are released in August/September, and ticket sales often open up in September/October. However, some are released in June!

The North Pole Adventure

The North Pole Adventure is operated by the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad, will offer families the journey of a lifetime. Participants will be able to hand-deliver their letters to Santa at the North Pole. You can enjoy cocoa, cookies, entertainment such as singing, and activities with Santa’s elves.

Dennison Railroad Depot Museum

When it comes down to it, there is only one official Polar Express Train Ride Ohio.  The officially trademarked experience takes place at the Dennison Railroad Depot Museum. This is the authentic Polar Express train ride, sanctioned by the Warner Brothers and Rail Events.

Santa Christmas Train Ride

Head to the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway to take the Santa Christmas Train Ride! It is the longest-running annual event at the Hocking Hills Railway! Families have been enjoying this Ohio train ride for over 40 years!  Starting at the end of November and running through right before Christmas, the Santa train rides operate on the weekends.

The North Pole Express

The North Pole Express is run by LM&M Railroad. This railroad offers themed rides all year round. Around the holiday season, you can ride in festively decorated rail cars.  The ride takes about 75 minutes, and during the Ohio train ride, you can spend time visiting with Santa and his elves. 

Each passenger on this special holiday-themed train ride will get a pre-packaged cookie, along with a souvenir bell. The Holiday Express Train ride typically starts the weekend before Thanksgiving and runs through Christmas. Just like all of the other themed Christmas train rides, this one sells out quickly. North Pole Express

The North Pole Express by the Northwest Ohio Railroad Preservation Inc. is in Findlay. This popular holiday quarter-scale train ride is a magical trip through a winter wonderland scene of holiday lights and holiday decorations.

Letters to Santa

Head to the Ohio Railway Museum and take a ride on the Ohio Public Service 1925 car. Children can bring their letters to Santa and mail them right in the Railway Post Office Car. This family-friendly event also has other themed holiday activities.

Akron Zoo

Akron Zoo has beautiful gardens for visitors to walk around, containing over 7,200 plants and shrubs. There is also an amphitheater for educational talks and demonstrations.

Lagoon Deer Park

Lagoon Deer Park has a petting zoo where the animals have free range in a large area, so interaction with the animals is encouraged. If you feed the animals, there is a good chance they will follow you around the park!

Fishing without a license is available on the four lagoons in the park. The ponds are stocked with rainbow trout, bullheads, channel cat, white bass, carp, largemouth, rock bass, bluegill, crappies, perch, muskies, and northern pike. There are also weekend night fishing opportunities.

Columbus Zoo and Aquarium

The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is one of the oldest establishments in Ohio. This Zoo is one of the most popular zoos in the entire United States. This is also a huge place that covers over 550 acres of land. There are over 10,000 individual animals that call this zoo their home. The Zookeepers also give talks that guests are encouraged to join.

Cleveland Metroparks Zoo

This is a great zoo that offers other activities such as a train, a 4D theater, and a zip line. It covers over 180 acres of land and is based in Cleveland, Ohio.

This zoo is divided into different zones. For example, in the wilderness zone, you will be able to see bears, wolves, reindeer, and other animals that live in the wilderness. In other areas of the zoo, there are animals like big cats and elephants.

Visitors can walk or drive through the Christmas light show, called ‘Winter Wild Lights‘, starting mid-November until the end of December.

Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens

Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens is one of the top wildlife places to visit in the entire United States. There are over 2,000 animals and over 3,000 plants and shrubs that call this home. Ohio’s most famous zoo resident lives here – Fiona the hippo. Born prematurely, the whole world watched her survive against all odds!

The zoo puts a lot of emphasis on exhibits. Some of the exhibits that run in this Zoo include Cat Canyon, Hippo Cove, Penguin Point, and the African Habitat.

The Reptile House has been granted National Historical Landmark status. After seeing the animals in the zoo, you can also take a walk around the grounds, and there are activities for the kids as well, such as the outdoor train ride and the carousel.

The ‘PNC Festival of Lights‘ runs from mid-November to early January at the Cincinnati Zoo.

Cross-Country Skiing in Northeast Ohio

Cleveland Metroparks

Cleveland Metroparks offers cross-country skiing on hiking, bridle, and all-purpose trails, as well as the fairways and rough areas of six golf courses. Cross-country skiing can take place when there is a four-inch snow base. Ski rentals are available at Big Met Golf Course in Rocky River. Guided instruction is typically available in January and February. There are three programs available: Introduction to Cross-Country Skiing, Try-It, and Learn-It.

Geauga Park District

In Geauga County, skiing is permitted at 23 of the parks that are located in this district. On the website, there are different classes and programs available for visitors to take part in.

Lake Metroparks

In Lake County, Skiing is available at the Chapin Forest Reservation and Girdled Road Reservation. Ski equipment can be rented at the Pine Lodge Ski Center. Lorain County Parks

In Lorain County, skiing is permitted in all of the parks. Skiing is also permitted at Forest Hills Golf Course and Schoepfle Garden provided there is at least 3 inches of snow on the ground. Skiers must bring their own equipment.

Portage Park District

In Portage County, skiing is permitted on 8 of the trails that are within the park district. These trails are varied in length, from 1.9 miles to over 7 miles long. Visitors must bring their own ski equipment.

Quail Hollow Park

Stark Parks offers cross-country skiing at Quail Hollow Park. A condition of this use is that the paths are covered with 3 to 4 inches of snow. In this location, equipment is available for rent. Classes are available in January and February.

Summit MetroParks

In Summit County, skiing is permitted in 8 of the Metroparks. Skiing is also permitted at The Bike and Hike Trail, Freedom Trail, and Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail. For these trails to be open, there must be a minimum of two inches of snow on the ground. There is no equipment hire available.

Toledo Metroparks

Toledo Metroparks tries to keep all trails clear for walkers, runners, and cyclists; however, all the trails are available for cross-country skiing when there is sufficient snow cover. Skiers are asked not to use natural areas such as meadows. There are two maintained cross-country skiing trails, one at Oak Openings Preserve Metropark, and one at Secor Metropark.

Oak Openings Ski Trails

At Oak Openings Preserve Metropark there is a one-way loop cross-country ski trail that is a little over 3 miles long. Skiers can take the full loop or a shorter loop. A trail map is available online. Parking is at the Evergreen Lake area.

Secor Ski Trail
